Mama's family
I did a search and nothing came up... I have been watching eps of Mama's family on Logo and it brings back some good memories
1. Buzz and Bubba both made my teenage gay loins tingly
2. The NBC eps with Eunice and Ellen are the best of the broadcast ones(with Rashomama being excellent)
3. Vint got so dumb in syndication and got a face lift?
4. Aunt Fran was useless
your thoughts?

Rue McClannahan said that she was originally signed to play Naomi
However Carol Burnett used her influence to get Dorothy Lyman cast as Naomi. Since they had Rue under contract (and to avoid a lawsuit) - they created the dowdy part of Aunt Fran just for her
Naturally Rue was pissed, and glad when the show got cancelled

Network Naomi is far better than syndicated Naomi. NN is sly, sexy and in control. SN is horribly wigged, maybe 4 iq points higher than Vint and I don't know what the fuck.was.with those shrill voice maneuvers.

According to Rue, she was always going to play Aunt Fran, but Aunt Fran was supposed to be more of a Naomi character. There was no Naomi in the original script.
The producers created the Naomi character for Dorothy Lyman after Rue had already signed on to play Fran. So Fran became kind of a pointless nonentity and Rue hated playing her.

My background is way different from Mama's Family and Raytown, but I enjoyed this series. I liked the Bubba seasons more than the earlier seasons. It's just silly humor and cheered me up through some depressing times.
I liked Iola a lot.

The people who don't like Mama's Family are the same types who think Tig Notaro is funny and love to brag that they don't own a TV. Mama's Family is just mindless fun. They weren't trying to reinvent the wheel, they just did funny stuff for a broad audience.

It was enjoyable in much the same way Keeping Up Appearances was entertaining: the show followed a formula and had strong comedic acting. It would have been great if there had been a Keeping Up/Mama's Family crossover... maybe they could have crossed paths on a Caribbean cruise?

I consider the Eunice/Family sketches from the Carol Burnett Show, the NBC version of Mama's Family and the syndicated Mama's Family as three different shows. The sketches on the CBS show were just sketches, they were dark and sad, but really funny because they struck a chord. For the weekly sitcom on NBC, the characters couldn't be so harsh and dark, so everything was toned down. For the syndicated version they just went full on broad comedy.
Personally, I prefer the CBS sketches and the syndicated version.

The only thing better about the Network version than the syndicated one was Naomi. She was a much better foil to Mama in her original form.
But the network version just seems so drab and dark. Sonia seemed like she was always covered with a thin layer of dirt and hair and needed a waxing. Buzz was ugly. Fran was boring.
The syndicated version was more light, colorful and campy. A better watch. Iola is fun. Bubba is hot.

Some of the best episodes (in addition to those already mentioned):
-- The chili contest
-- The flashback Mother's Day episode (DUKE REEVES!)
-- The film noir takeoff where everyone gets to play 40s archetypes
-- The one where Naomi has amnesia and Thelma turns her into a Stepford wife
-- The one where they fantasize about "what could have been" and Iola and Vint are married and Naomi is the goody two-shoes neighbor

There was also a good episode involving a Mama/ Eunice (Carol Burnett character) flashback.
A young Eunice (perfect casting for a yiung Eunice) showed up drunk for some school performance.
This was the dark back story of why Mama didn’t want her kids to drink, yet it was OK for her to crack open beers.
That was a dark episode, for MF.

I think Iola got her cherry popped by the Norwegian sailor who a male version of her.
Beverly archer said when she was auditioning the other actresses were taking it very seriously and she auditioned like she was doing sketch comedy.
After the Rashomama episode, Burnett appeared only once more by phone for the mamas birthday episode where she calls mama on her birthday. The scribes that played young Eunice on that episode was perfect. Burnett and her husband Joe Hamilton were going by thru a contentions divorce and he was an executive producer on the show.
Burnett called Vicki Lawrence and a proposed a syndicated show where they played mama and Eunice again. Lawrence told Burnett that she had just agreed to do mamas family with Joe Hamilton for syndication. Burnett was furious and didn’t speak to Vicki for a few years.

The more I watch the Iola episodes, I am struck by how good Beverly Archer is as Iola. She is that character through and through. She was the same way in all of the sitcoms I have seen her in, in the past. She did a great job in "Major Dad" too.
The only time I can think of when she almost broke Iola's character was when Mama was fucking around with some balloon animals and one broke and the remnants landed on Vicki's face and Vicki started to laugh and looked into the camera. Beverly reacts to it but really doesn't break character and the scene goes on.

I thought it was really interesting they decided to make Bubba hot. on the Carol Burnett show he was never shown but he would get referred to (he was Eunice and Ed's son), and they implied vaguely he was repulsive, like one of the no-neck monsters. Then when he appeared on Mama's Family he was sexy and sweet-natured, if dim-witted. I thought that was smart because if he had also been repulsive looking like Vint (who was not repulsive in real life but styled to be such a geek), it would have been a hard show to watch.

I met Allan Kayser at a horror convention several years ago and occasionally still communicate with him on social media. He’s totally down to earth and a sweetheart. We had briefly communicated via social media before I met him, so when I walked up to his table and we made eye contact he automatically knew who I was. We chatted at his table for about a half hour and I eventually got up the nerve to ask him how in the hell he was able to wear jeans so tight. He acknowledged that he has a big gay following because of them and said that they were actually comfortable and that he could still fit in them.
