Jamie Lee Curtis is OVER people having something to say about the Hollywood “Nepo Babies”
“I have been a professional actress since I was 19 years old so that makes me an OG Nepo Baby,” Curtis wrote on Instagram. “I’ve never understood, nor will I, what qualities got me hired that day, but since my first two lines on Quincy as a contract player at Universal Studios to this last spectacular creative year some 44 years later, there’s not a day in my professional life that goes by without my being reminded that I am the daughter of movie stars. The current conversation about nepo babies is just designed to try to diminish and denigrate and hurt.”
“For the record, I have navigated 44 years with the advantages my associated and reflected fame brought me, I don’t pretend there aren’t any, that try to tell me that I have no value on my own,” Curtis continued. “It’s curious how we immediately make assumptions and snide remarks that someone related to someone else who is famous in their field for their art, would somehow have no talent whatsoever. I have come to learn that is simply not true. I have suited up and shown up for all different kinds of work with thousands of thousands of people and every day I’ve tried to bring integrity and professionalism and love and community and art to my work.”
“I am not alone,” Curtis concluded. “There are many of us. Dedicated to our craft. Proud of our lineage. Strong in our belief in our right to exist.”
Curtis is one of several actors who have spoken out about the “Nepo baby” backlash following the New York Magazine cover. Lily Allen wrote on Twitter that such views can lead to “childhood trauma,” while Ice Cube’s son, the actor O’Shea Jackson Jr., also railed against the term.
“I had to get my ass up and make it work,” Jackson Jr. tweeted. “From the roles I chose. The work ethic I put into them. My professionalism on sets and promo tours. Even leaving HIS agency and goin to find a team of my own. Once the door was opened it was up to me to walk through it and thrive.”

Marlo Thomas said that growing up immersed in showbiz made her comfortable with all aspects of the industry from a very early age. She wasn’t blinded by glamour- she understood the money. She said that she had zero nerves during her earliest auditions because she’d seen hundreds of auditions and knew exactly what to expect, exactly what to do.
Yes, her father was a big star but she just followed him into the family business which happened to be TV acting. And she was good at it.

Shes taking it too personally. There are nepo Babies WHO ACTUALLY HAVE TALENT, then theres the wastes of space whose discernable talent is beig able to stand up. Its one thing to grow up with the business in your daily life, and using what you learn to build a career...connections or not, and the kids who get these jobs because of who their parents are...and they expect it with no effort of theirs. It's like an episode of unsolved mysteries how you got hired or cast on Quincy in the 1970s at time when your father was still a relatively big name in Hollywood, albeit nowhere near it's peak. Out all the thousands of other desperate young people looking for a break in Hollywood, you can't figure out why you were plucked from the crowd of people?

If she were confident in her own talent, she wouldn't be so defensive. Yes, she has talent, but she also received an enormous help from her famous parents, with their connections. The nepotism in Hollywood is rampant. Take the Jenners, Hadids, Beibers, Hamlins, Depps. Most of these fools would never be famous, in their own right. Garry Marshall was famously known for employing his family members -- both sisters (his "other" sister, Ronny, was an associate/coordinating producer on nearly all his projects), as well as his kids. But nobody was screaming "Neoptism!" back then. He was merely considered a very loyal guy, looking out for his family & friends, first. (he worked with the same people over & over).
And he also had a sense of humor about it. His younger daughter, Kathi, had bit parts in every one of his movies (and a couple of Penny's) -- most notably as the nearly-silent secretary in the Princess Diaries films. Her character was named Charlotte "Kutaway"....which is fricken hilarious! He certainly could have stuck her in larger roles, if he'd wanted to, but he didn't.

R32 Kelly has had a career for no reason. Yes, having parents in the business kept her busy and working in the industry, whether it’s hosting etc.
Her having parents in the business is what allowed her to have a music career in the first place. The public not buying her music doesn’t change that she had connections because of her parents to even get a record deal.

You probably can't even blame those kids for not getting it. They live in a parallel universe, are sent to expensive private schools, grow up surrounded by other industry folks. They probably have minimal contact with the type of aspiring young actor who came to LA from Bumfucke, Flyoverstan, and has to wait tables to make ends meet. I bet they don't have the faintest idea how hard it is for a non-nepotistically privileged person to land even a tiny role on some shitty sitcom, let alone a good part in an interesting project. Even if they're told how many people auditioned for parts they ended up getting, they have no idea what it actually feels like to be rejected not a few times, but over and over and over again.... let alone what it feels like having to go through that WITHOUT rich parents who pay your rent and acting lessons ...

I think people are confusing nepotism with networking.
Nepotism is the practice of bestowing FAVORITISM on somebody due to a family relationship. Think Aaron Spelling casting Tori Spelling in 90210.
I don’t consider industry people helping their kids navigate the channels, referring to agents/managers to be “nepotism,” I consider that just plain networking.
Jamie Lee Curtis may have had access to the entertainment industry through her parents (although I don’t believe the producers of Halloween were aware who her parents were when they cast her), but I don’t consider her career to be the result of “nepotism.” It’s kind of analogous to a lawyer who pays for his kid to go to college, law school, and the kid ends up working at another law firm. That’s not nepotism.

Curtis is a smug idiot.
Her comment about Ana de Armas was beyond stupid.
I can understand not knowing who de Armas was, but Curtis' assumption - that because de Armas is Cuban that she would have come straight off the boat - speaks to very shallow thinking.
And I still think it's pretty tacky that Curtis is marketing herself so hard for that Oscar nomination. I didn't even like EEAAO, but it's crazy that Hsu is getting ignored.
However you judge a performance, there is no metric by which you could possibly say that Curtis' work was more worthy of recognition yet she is trying to muscle her way to the nomination over the better performance/actress.
And not only did Hsu give the better performance, but she has a better "narrative": born to a single mother, Hsu earned her way to big roles on Broadway musicals before landing a role that mirrors her experience as the daughter of a migrant.
Of course, a Nepo Baby wouldn't see anything wrong with robbing Hsu of this opportunity.

Many children of actors have talent on their own to have successful careers in movies and entertainment. Jamie Lee Curtis has done some great movies...Jane Fonda is another one, off the top of my head. They wouldn't have lasted long in movies, if they were terrible. Even the most famous parents can't ensure lasting power for their kids if nothing is there...oh, maybe a cameo or two somewhere. I'm being the daughter of stars have helped a bit, at least to get her foot in the door. ...but again, it's no guarantee. Nepotism exists in all aspects of life...not just the famous.

I am finding it odd how many have bought ‘Jamie Lee Curtis, Great Thespian’. She is as serviceable as she is replaceable. Sure, her role in Halloween became iconic, but was really due to her? Itis only in hindsight that we cannot now phantom another actress in the role (a screaming queen at that).
That she does not realize this herself is shameful.

R144 I agree. I love Halloween, Trading Places, A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies, and much more. But I find her more irritating every year.
Also: Jamie Lee Curtis is not “OG nepo,” not by a long shot. She is simply attempting to combine two vapidly trendy terms into more than the sum of their parts. Lon Chaney Diana Barrymore 1940s. Ricky Nelson, Venetia Stevenson 1950s. Jody McCrea, James MacArthur 1960s. I’m not even thinking very hard. There are many hundreds more of that pre-1970s era.
The only reason there seem to be more of them today is because there are more of them: the definition of entertainer has spread wide and shallow over the last 25 years and yes, they continue to procreate wide and shallow. Meanwhile…of course they have opportunities non-nepo babies do not have: they grew up in the industry and have built in industry contacts.

Better at what R159? Janet Leigh had one iconic role and then spent the rest of her career being known for just that. A few thoughts - she's probably comparing her against all the other children of stars who either don't become successful or who have limited success - like her sister, for example.
She's got a point there. HOWEVER - how and why did she get her first role, a leading role, in Halloween? I have to think it was because she was the daughter of the first blockbuster horror film's main actress. Janet Leigh in Psycho - and it was a marketing ploy to have her be the star of Halloween.
Next let's add in all of the connections her parents had - which meant that people also didn't fuck her over or mess with her because of the blow-back within the industry from Tony Curtis's connections. Tony Curtis knew EVERYBODY and had slept with half of them, male and female.
Also she brought all of these connections and know-how to every role. If you can help producers through your connections, it gives you an edge over any other struggling actress who doesn't know anyone.
Then there's the obvious - coming from enough money and living comfortably in LA and not having to take shitty or degrading work to advance your career.
Yes - she is correct that being the daughter of famous people is no guarantee for success short or long term. However, she really needs to shut the fuck up. It's not a level playing field and she should know that.

I liked her in A Fish Called Wanda. I forget she was even a bepo baby until she brought it up.
Fortunately Liza hasn't said anything. Classy.

r155 Absolutely. There was a lot of publicity about this at the time. It was part of the marketing & press plan. Realizing her lineage was not some amazing discovery made during production. That she was “Janet Leigh’s daughter” —(Leigh was mentioned more than Tony Curtis due to Psycho) was constantly mentioned by all print and broadcast press at the time.

Not a good look, Jamie. A little humility goes a long way. Just admit you had privilege and move on. smh

I used to like her. Her social media presence killed that.

Jamie just ate up all the "cool and edgy" crap some of her fans felt the need to appoint onto her.
I can't think anything other than TRY-HARD to the most try-hard degree after she joined this posing jester and queen of try-hards for this actors on actors try-hard debacle.
Try-hard x infinity

She needs to get rid of those Ed McMahon glasses. So ugly and unflattering. Brooke Shields is another who needs different eyewear
