You can't judge 19th century men by today's standards. That was legal and acceptable back then.

Virginia claimed to be 21 on the marriage certificate.

No, OP, being a MAP is the cool new thing to do, not agreeing with it is what will get you canceled.

Watched it this weekend; I wanted to like it - kind of an old school costume drama/mystery, it was shot outside of Pittsburg & John Fetterman has a cameo (though I honestly didn't see him) & the guy playing Edgar Allan Poe was very good, but the plot of the movie just turns so absurd. The movie stayed with me afterwards, because it had plot holes big enough to drive a truck through. It's not bad mindless entertainment on a Sunday afternoon, but it was kind of a let down.

I started another recent Poe-adjacent show, the supernatural “Raven’s Hollow”, mostly because it starred the hot blond twink from the Narnia films and other eye-candy. But his American accent is poor and the show is overall pretty bad. Hopefully “The Pale Blue Eye” is a little bit better.

The obvious crime is that the "West Point Cadet" Poe is played by a fugly 33 yo actor. Missed hot tension, galore.

You bring up an interesting point about Gen Z. A decade from now I think the term Gen Z will have been replaced. In the not too distant future they will be known as "The Scolds".

I'm Gen X and don't have strong opinions about any other generation. But these little censorious fucks are obsessed with ruining every piece of art from the past.

They're pissed and it comes across in their supposed comedy. What they find funny are memes with no apparent punchline. It's all self-referential and not designed to make one laugh. It's purpose is to say: Oh yeah, I recognize those three memes smashed together. haha, next.

They've gone after Dave Chappelle, Bette Midler, Patton Oswalt, JK Rowling, Macy Gray, and so many others. They seemingly lack any sort of original creativity so they're going after art from the past because they're mad that their frontal cortex is underdeveloped and they're also very upset that they were born with a great big stick up their ass.

Yes, but the rest of the cadets were hot. It's like that's how Poe got in - he was the token ugly guy. But I did notice the porn addicted son from season 1 of The White Lotus in the cast

Have you seen this, R8? The trailer is terrible. It pushes forward all the art direction and shtick of The Alienist with a scoop of Sleepy Hollow but the impact is overwrought ridiculousness. Is it any good?

by Anonymousreply 9January 8, 2023 10:24 AM

Gen Z goes after a lot of people who need going after.

by Anonymousreply 10January 8, 2023 10:38 AM

I watched it this weekend. It wasn't terrible - mindless entertainment - but I tended to get distracted by other things (where's Fetterman? ooh, that's Robert Duvall! there's the creepy kid from Season 1 of White Lotus! who is the hot cadet that looks like a Calvin Klein model?) so the story is not exactly engaging. But I've seen worse on Netflix

Sit the fuck down R10.

As if your generation are the moral arbiters of the world. You remind me of the modesty police in Iran.

Face facts kiddo, nobody likes your generation and that makes you seethe.

by Anonymousreply 12January 8, 2023 10:59 AM

Pity. Could have been mesmerizing if they concentrated on story first, then style.

by Anonymousreply 13January 8, 2023 11:06 AM

Poe was supposedly considered handsome in his day. I find this hard to believe.

by Anonymousreply 14January 8, 2023 11:14 AM

Very atmospheric. THey relied on that. I was disappointed. I love Christian Bale, but the moment I saw what's her name from X Files Gillian Anderson, I knew the show would sink into absurdity. And the girl who played her daughter who got headaches? Awful. The pacing the energy, was off. No tension, IMO. And honestly I didn't like the way they handled the storyline about Bale's daughter.

"How long before Gen Z discovers Poe married his 13 year old cousin and they demand he be cancelled?"

What's wrong with that?

by Anonymousreply 16January 8, 2023 12:45 PM

Agreed, R15. A disappointing, lifeless slog. Does anyone know if the book is better?

by Anonymousreply 17January 8, 2023 1:49 PM

It's so funny listening to old people displace their panic at aging onto younger people.

Omg no!! Not all the giants of American culture from the past half-century!!! NOT MACY GRAY!!!

by Anonymousreply 18January 8, 2023 2:17 PM

The thing in r3's article link should be set on fire.

by Anonymousreply 19January 8, 2023 3:02 PM

Instead of this silly cadet murder they should have gone with the real life mystery of Mary Rogers. The case inspired Poe to write The Mystery of Marie Roget.

OP doesn't understand how cancelling works.

by Anonymousreply 21January 8, 2023 5:22 PM

I thought that was Glenn Close.

by Anonymousreply 22January 8, 2023 5:23 PM

I enjoyed it. It was a lot better than Amsterdam.

by Anonymousreply 23January 8, 2023 10:12 PM

I’m having a hard time getting into this.

by Anonymousreply 24January 9, 2023 5:13 AM

Tedious, boring schleck. We had to give up halfway through. Christian Bale is boring, wooden and totally lacking in charisma or any interest whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 25January 22, 2023 9:20 PM

Was cadet Marquis (actor who plays Rob from Industry) sleeping with the first victim cadet Fry? It seemed like aggressive cadet Ballinger implied it when they were drinking, but then Marquis just laughed it off. Maybe I misunderstood it. The first cadet they questioned (the twinky Loughborough) also needed a hookup scene.

Anyway, Poe was certainly charismatic, but not likable at all. Anderson was campy and terrible. But I enjoyed the film somewhat.

by Anonymousreply 26January 23, 2023 12:55 PM

[quote]Anderson was campy and terrible.

Whatever that accent she was going for made her sound like Porky Pig's grandma
