Sissy Spacek had one of the worst nose jobs I"ve ever seen. Her original nose was wide and flat; after the surgery it was so chopped up it lnow looks like a tiny ski jump.

Sissy Spacek’s original nose (linked above) was distractingly big. She needed a nose job for the movies, she just needed a better one than what she got. She also has those obvious straight lines down each side when she smiles. That’s always a sign of an untalented surgeon. Nose jobs are apparently one of the hardest surgeries to do and get right from what I have heard. It’s important to work with an experienced specialist. It’s the most common form of surgery but not many people know how selective one should be in choosing a surgeon.

Most of these people looked fine. My mother got a nose job and regretted it. Despite her professed hate for her "old" nose. which was a smaller Streisand type nose, once she got her nose shaved down she felt that she lost something that was unique to her and made her stand out.

When my parents visited San Francisco back in the early 70's my mom was often stopped in the street by people who thought she was Streisand. She rocked a swing cut back then and wore mini skirts and thigh high boots.

In fairness, you have to beware of comparing candid shots vs. photoshoots with lots of makeup/airbrushing. You also have to be wary of differing angles and facial expressions (your nose can look different with a wide smile vs. a neutral expression. And there's also the loss of baby fat and the often drastic weight loss that comes with fame.

Having said that, there are way more nose jobs and other surgeries than we realize. The real tell is the profile shot--you can see the changes to the structure of the nose and (and chin) that can't be explained by weight loss or makeup.

Shari Belafonte said in an interview that people used to always ask her who did her nose, but she'd never had a nose job. Don't know if she counts as any kind of star or not.

I'd believe that Vivien didn't have one. Her nose was fine but not sculpted and it actually fit her face, which isn't true of many people's post plastic-surgery.

Most beauties of classic Hollywood did not have nose jobs. Marilyn is the only major name who did, plus a chin implant. She's the most modern sex symbol because she has the most invasive surgical alternation beyond tasteful face lifts in old age.

IMO, the profile shot isn't always the easiest way to see a nose job.

People (who've had plastic surgery) tend to thin down the sides of their noses, which is more visible from the front.

There's also the change to the tip. All women seem to want that slightly upturned, small tip, and it's ridiculous.

In earlier eras plastic surgery was not routinely done on celebrities. It was relatively uncommon. Of course these days celebrities get everything done, sometimes serveral times. Cher has had her breasts lifted at least three times. Many years ago she said she's had three boob jobs: "one after each child, and once after that." She's probably had them done at least a half a dozen times by now.

No, they didn't.. Plastic surgery was in its early stages; ;it was not done routinely, "Just like they do now." As for MM I heard a staroy that she became hysterical when a makeup artist said she had a "bump" on her nose, so her lover/agent Johnny Hyde paid the expensive plastic surgery to correct it. The plastic surgeon also suggested a jaw implant, so that was done too. But plastic surgery definitely wasn't what it's like now.
