I do think this is the worst possible decision WB could have done, because it’s such a big FU to the fan base who supported them over a very long, turbulent period. I saw an interesting YouTube which posited there is something called the “Trust Thermocline” in which consumers can only be strung along so far before they abandon a product they use (this was in relation to Disney Parks declining quality, posted below); I think this will be the breaking point for the DC movie brand, at the very least for a while, until the properties are rebooted again under, presumably, Universal. Doing one more Superman movie under Cavill made sense because it’s inevitable that Universal, once the Warner Bros. acquisition is complete sometime in 2025, will reboot all DC properties with their own creative people presumably chosen by Donna Langley who has her own tastes. It makes absolutely no sense to institute a ten year plan. Warner Brothers doesn’t have ten years. It has exactly one year, four months and ten days. Then it goes away forever.

I also think it will be VERY hard to get a good Superman movie made because everyone in Hollywood knows Warner Brothers is on the auction block and that anybody who signs on for Gunn’s Superman will be in for a one-off. This is going to be a Superman Returns redux.

Also the DC fans will be brutal to anybody who is cast as Superman by Gunn.

Because until about 2 weeks ago Henry was still superman, James Gunn came in and decided he wanted an actor who can actually act.

Even if he should have waited for a signed contract before he did anything they ask him to, the Warner studio comes across as not trustworthy and also taking cruel pleasure into building up fans hopes, only to have them wait and crush them in the end.

They had him release a message about being back, dresse as Superman. It wasn't Cavill's delusion. Then had the fans and the eager actor wait. And wait. When they worried nothing was done about Superman, Gunn stated it was of the Utmost importance for him. And then, they announce Cavill's out. Fans feel trolled and antagonized. A lot of them have a man crush on Henry that borders on irrational. They might be very resentful.

They might discover there is a limit to fans loyalty when they feel disrespected.

I think it's a well-calculated move on Gunn's part. People online may love Henry but they don't seem to care enough to actually do much about it.

James Gunn’s daft style works for some comic book movies. He could never make a serious, face value superhero movie. This is the equivalent of Richard Lester taking over Reeve’s Superman films, or Joel Schumacher replacing Tim Burton.

I hope they get Brad Bird to direct it, I think he would be able to balance out the silly with the serious as well as creating an earnest version of Clark/Superman that's needed. He also knows how to direct action scenes in a way that you can tell what's going.

If Momoa is really shifting to Lobo I think it's just an indication of where DC is going. I think Gunn is finished with the big name heroes coming together Justice League style. Lobo is a more unknown character with anti-villain tendencies and, along with Suicide Squad, might indicate they're looking to focus on smaller, quirkier characters.

Superman might get the same treatment as Pattinson's Batman - but in the other direction tonally. So spun off into a separate (?) universe with a younger, more grounded Superman. Probably as optimistic and virtuous as his comic book namesake, and with a more self-contained and interesting story to tell. Who knows if the same will happen with the other big name heroes (WW and Aquaman), but I wouldn't bet against that.

Gunn needs to scrub Snyder's influence over the franchise. Not only because he needs to make his own impression and it's too much baggage, but because Snyder warped the characters quite significantly to tell the story he wanted to tell. His dour, overly-stylized and frankly superficial style of storytelling isn't a good fit for the direction DC needs to go.

It was obvious Cavill was extremely unhappy with Witcher because of the direction it went in Season 2. Witcher basically started out as a supernatural Western with Cavill as the mysterious cowboy but by Season 2 Hissrich decided she wanted to do World Building and spin-offs and shift the focus to the politics in an attempt to mimic Game of Thrones. I have no idea what happened in Witcher season 2. Who are these people? What’s happening now? It was embarrassing and reminiscent of Westworld’s painful decline. I have a feeling Witcher would have had a vastly diminished season 3 audience even if the fiasco had never taken place. Netflix wanted Witcher to take the ball from the absence of Game of Thrones. Guess what? We have House of the Dragon now, and it’s a huge hit. We don’t need a Game of Thrones imitation. Witcher rather than try to become its own thing, is now a bad imitation of something people already have. It probably would have been cancelled after season 4 if Cavill stayed on because of high costs and diminishing returns, just like Westworld. Especially since Netflix is tightening their belts now after years of reckless spending.

And of course Grace is like, he wants to be a movie star now and then two hours later Cavill announces a Warhammer series for Amazon.

I do like The Witcher but I must admit I find all the political stuff takes up WAY too much time, I would be fine with it in limited amounts as a bit of backdrop and context but what I really wanted from the show was to see Geralt roaming from town to town slaying monsters and investigating supernatural crimes. It should have started like that and built over time, it was sprawling right from the start and with way too many characters to keep track of.

The spin-off releasing at Christmas looks awesome though!

The 2023 releases will go on as planned and I think they will continue with Pattinson’s Batman and its universe.

They will be unable to start a new extended universe because of the widely expected acquisition. When Disney acquired Fox, the old regime films got sidelined. It’s going to be assumed that the same will happen here. Therefore, they will be unable to recruit top talent because everyone assumes the film will be buried by Universal who will want a fresh start. WB launched Man of Steel with a huge and impressive cast (I remember career-peak Amy Adams was a huge get). So while Gunn’s new Superman origin story may get made, it’s going to be made with names from the B list. Like I said, this will be a Superman Returns redux. Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. Kevin Spacey. Some poor sap to be the new Brandon Routh.

So obviously recasting them with new actors who would only be paid under a million for the first film makes enormous sense for a cash strapped company. FTC is very anti merger these days. They’ve made several moves in the past few weeks that have or will shut down huge corporations from buying other companies, Microsoft trying to buy Activision, for example.

I’m not at all convinced the FTC will let NBC Universal take WB, nor should they. There’s been entirely too many mergers for the past couple of decades, really. No one is reigning in these companies. I doubt that given the political atmosphere and what an absolute embarrassing public shitshow WB has become that NBCUni will bother.

FTC allowed Disney to buy Fox’s assets. They can’t backtrack now.

Comcast will not buy all WBD assets, the only ones worth anything to them are Warner Bros and HBO. They don’t need CNN or a dozen reality garbage linear channels.
