I think he's banged up a little bit for that particular role, but it's rare when someone that beautiful in youth is able to sustain it without constant acting work. After Smallville, he didn't really do much, so there was no reason to maintain his appearance.

A lot of people with wide babyfaces with pouty lips and well endowed physiques have some extra fat cushion I believe. A lot of them gain weight with age as the metabolism slows. People who are always skinny with long features age even worse. I don't think Tom looks bad, the extra fat softens your aging. He just needs to go to gym to burn a bit off.

He went from looking about 8-10 years younger than his real age to looking age appropriate in his forties. The same thing happened to be in my mid forties, a combination of time catching up with me + weight gain and I went from looking like age 32 at age 40 to looking like my real age by 45.

Even though he was 34 when Smallville ended that was still young enough to try to get into Hollywood and he just left a big show that was on for ten years. He could have done better. He's not hungry for fame and his whole career is even the definition of the "right place, right time." He was working some blue-collar job and got discovered for modeling (which he didn't enjoy) and then just went on a few auditions and got the role of Clark with little to no experience. That said, he remained humble and down-to-earth and never heard any diva stories.

Is Superman the only superhero they properly cast? Most of his actors including the TV ones actually resemble the source. While miscasting or deviations seems so common in other comic book adaptations. Wonder Woman is another that maintained good casting but there weren't many adaptations.
