That scene had me rolling on the floor, r1. I was shocked that movie got such bad reviews when it came out. It was one of my favorites that year

by Anonymousreply 2December 11, 2022 6:08 PM

R2 Mine too! I think critics did not get it.

Denise Richards is a great comic actress! She is such a good sport

by Anonymousreply 3December 11, 2022 6:15 PM

The Guardian has a great article about it!

I saw this on release and did not appreciate the humor, I can now appreciate all the jokes.

by Anonymousreply 5December 11, 2022 6:19 PM

One of my faves I can watch over and over. A lot of my family did not get it when we watched one night during a visit. Too subversive?

by Anonymousreply 6December 11, 2022 6:21 PM

R6 They are not smart then lol

by Anonymousreply 7December 11, 2022 6:25 PM

Possibly the gayest movie ever made, behind Mommie Dearest.

by Anonymousreply 8December 11, 2022 6:30 PM

It’s definitely one of my top 10. People either get it and love it, or hate it. Or so it seems.

by Anonymousreply 9December 11, 2022 8:36 PM

Lona Williams based the story on her experience as Minnesota's Junior Miss in 1985 (she finished as first runner-up at nationals).

Loretta is my absolute favorite of Allison Janney's movie roles. Somebody here claimed to have run into her at the airport while quoting her lines with a friend.

by Anonymousreply 11December 11, 2022 8:45 PM

I really think Ellen Barkin played herself in this movie.

by Anonymousreply 12December 11, 2022 8:50 PM

That video at r10 is priceless.

Those eyebrows on femmy-voiced Bruce are a dead giveaway now. How did we not know?

by Anonymousreply 13December 11, 2022 9:03 PM

Everyone in this movie is so funny from the "goddam lazy bastards" mayor to the silent, scared looking female judge.

by Anonymousreply 14December 11, 2022 9:15 PM

^ Jean Kangas, the long-suffering judge who worked for Becky Leeman's dad, was played by Lona Williams.

by Anonymousreply 15December 11, 2022 9:17 PM

“Smile” was much better satire and not over-the-top silly. And a stronger cast.

That's nice R16 but I've never seen it being aired.

DDG has some classic dialog.

I got some!

by Anonymousreply 20December 11, 2022 10:30 PM

Let's not forget Nora Dunn as the state level coordinator who hated kids and the pageant

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2022 3:12 AM

I remember clearly watching this at Universal City Walk AMC the weekend it opened. There may have been 10-15 people in the theater, all of whom were gay men. We laughed SO HARD.

It played on one of the subscription movie channels off and on, but has not streamed in many years now. I check reelgood frequently and it is never playing. Boo.

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen. They don't make them like that anymore.

by Anonymousreply 24December 12, 2022 4:14 AM

I can't believe I've never seen this. I am usually the person that likes and finds movies hilarious and re-watchable that others may not get or find funny.

by Anonymousreply 25December 12, 2022 4:17 AM

R25 watch it immediately.

by Anonymousreply 26December 12, 2022 4:51 AM

I can forgive Kirstie Alley for her scientology crazy shit due to this one performance.

by Anonymousreply 27December 12, 2022 4:54 AM

Also saw this when it came out in a mostly empty theater, and could never figure out why it flopped when crap like The Hangover makes millions. I dunno, maybe it is too gay for general appreciation, but pretty much everyone in it (Dunst, Barkin, Janney, Alley, Richards, Adams, Murphy) is perfect and I never get tired of watching it.

I like Smile too, but sometimes there's something to be said for going straight for the bad taste jugular.

Incredible cast

by Anonymousreply 29December 12, 2022 5:05 AM

Brittany Murphy was fantastic as usual. Denise Richards was at her most beautiful in this film.

by Anonymousreply 30December 12, 2022 5:05 AM

They're never gonna let you perform naked, i asked.

by Anonymousreply 34December 12, 2022 7:03 PM

"Tammy only smoked after a good tractor ride"

by Anonymousreply 36December 12, 2022 8:40 PM

Criminally underrated and fairy hard to find. There wasn't even a torrent of it available until the past year, when I assume a Blu-Ray was finally released.

by Anonymousreply 37December 12, 2022 8:46 PM

She had a big fat ass then and she's got a big fat ass now!

[quote] Loretta is my absolute favorite of Allison Janney's movie roles. Somebody here claimed to have run into her at the airport while quoting her lines with a friend.

When the IMDB boards were around, there was poster who said they met Janney in NYC when she was Broadway. She said that she told Janney that she loved Drop Dead Gorgeous and Janney did a few lines from the movie. I have a lot of respect for Janney because she's a late in life success story who is appreciative of her success compared to whiner Viola Davis.

by Anonymousreply 40December 12, 2022 9:30 PM

She’s skinny Amber, not deaf!

by Anonymousreply 41December 12, 2022 11:07 PM

The scene of the nurse wheeling Mary around in her farewell performance always makes crack up.

by Anonymousreply 42December 12, 2022 11:09 PM

Sam McMurray as Kirstie Alley's husband and Denise Richards mom was funny. He's an underrated actor

To pull off that dual role, he'd have to be.

by Anonymousreply 46December 13, 2022 2:11 AM

R146 What do you mean? He's a total ass in this movie.

by Anonymousreply 47December 13, 2022 3:09 AM

I'm confused.

by Anonymousreply 48December 13, 2022 3:18 AM

A favorite in this household. A swan ate my baby is used often here. Shockingly appropriate for so many things.

by Anonymousreply 49December 13, 2022 3:50 AM

R48 what are you confused about?

by Anonymousreply 50December 13, 2022 3:59 AM

Quit trying to convince us that "we can love Kirstie Allie now because she's dead."

Lots of shits are dead who we don't care to celebrate.

by Anonymousreply 51December 13, 2022 4:22 AM

R51 I'm not. It is a funny movie.

Yeah this movie could not get made today. The outrage!

by Anonymousreply 56December 14, 2022 1:14 AM

I can still remember when it came out and how it didn't play for very long at all and seemed to be forgotten. I couldn't understand it. The cast was fantastic and it's still one of the funniest movies I've ever seen in my entire life. Just about every person I've shown it to or recommended it to since has ended up enjoying it.

by Anonymousreply 59December 14, 2022 1:33 AM

Sarah Rose was based on Mary Kay right?

by Anonymousreply 60December 14, 2022 1:43 AM

R3 Have you seen her episodes of 30 Rock? She's hilarious and one of the best of that show's (many) guest stars.

by Anonymousreply 61December 14, 2022 1:46 AM

guess im one of the few who got to see it in a small but sold out theater in LA opening weekend. Audience went nuts. Rare to have that much laughter in a movie theater. Probably over 50 jokes landed big

The foreign rights had been sold off prior to release and New Line was still a junior studio without big $$ so it didn't make sense for them to put money into advertising---they wouldn't have recouped.....unlike a major studio that might have taken a swing with it.

by Anonymousreply 62December 14, 2022 8:26 AM

This movie would NEVER get made today. It does everything un-PC by 2023 standards.

Let's give special mention to Brittany Murphy, who can make a brilliant, heartbreaking moment in a subversive comedy when she gives Dunst her costume so she can still compete.

by Anonymousreply 63February 7, 2023 4:19 AM

My sister drug me to the theater to see this when it came out, and I'm glad she did. We were the only people in the theater and laughed our asses off.

by Anonymousreply 64February 7, 2023 4:32 AM

Initial movie ticket success depends on a studio and producers promoting the hell out of the release. Good word of mouth takes a great deal longer and usually starts with the rental release. Hocus Pocus and Showgirls became cult classics the same way, good word-of-mouth (in Showgirls' case "so bad, it's good" word of mouth).

by Anonymousreply 65February 7, 2023 4:55 AM

I was 14 when this movie was released in theaters and I remember seeing the TV spots. But, I don't think any of the theaters in my small hometown or nearby towns screened it. I saw it on cable around 2000 and it became one of my favorite comedy movies.

by Anonymousreply 66February 7, 2023 5:09 AM

Thank you, R23 for posting the link. This was even better than I remembered and I loved it when I initially saw it. I laughed out loud. I loved the entire cast including Kirstie Alley and I agree, this is one of my favorite Allison Janney performances among many. Miss Brittany Murphy and her laugh.

by Anonymousreply 67February 12, 2023 8:05 AM

Link at [R23] doesn’t work for me on an iPad. I just get a ton of pop ups when I click on the movie.

by Anonymousreply 68February 12, 2023 11:57 AM

I still have it on VHS.

My kingdom for a VCR!

by Anonymousreply 69February 12, 2023 10:43 PM

Was oh-so-stoned when I saw it the first time. Fell off the couch several times I was laughing so hard.

by Anonymousreply 70February 12, 2023 10:58 PM

Hysterically funny movie, so inappropriate and mean. I doubt this movie could ever get made today.

by Anonymousreply 71February 13, 2023 12:05 AM

It's on HBO Max and it's free for streaming on youtube.

by Anonymousreply 72May 7, 2023 12:30 AM

Really? It was almost like it was banned from all streaming and distribution for a while.

by Anonymousreply 73May 7, 2023 2:40 AM

I live this movie..btw , Amy Adams first screen credit in this film.

by Anonymousreply 74May 7, 2023 3:18 AM

I told you I'd move the car if a cripple came.

by Anonymousreply 75November 25, 2024 9:04 PM

[quote] Really? It was almost like it was banned from all streaming and distribution for a while.

It's one of those movies that occasionally pops up on a streaming service for several months and then it gets removed. I remember pre-covid, it showed up on Hulu for awhile. I don't think the movie has ever been made available for digital video purchase on Amazon, Apple, or on Google Play. The only upside is that it's available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

by Anonymousreply 76November 25, 2024 9:39 PM

Add me to the list of gays who somehow never saw this film. Going to need to watch over holidays.

by Anonymousreply 77November 25, 2024 10:00 PM

Fun fact: Shannon Nelson, the woman who played the dog loving contestant, has two kids with and is engaged to Coach Beard / Brendan Hunt from Ted Lasso.

by Anonymousreply 78November 26, 2024 5:06 PM

[quote] I can forgive Kirstie Alley for her scientology crazy shit due to this one performance.

Kirstie was a Scieno nutso as a person. But, she was a decent actress and had some good performances.

by Anonymousreply 79November 26, 2024 5:36 PM

R78 I looked up pics of them together. They look like cute quirky couple.

by Anonymousreply 80November 27, 2024 4:59 AM

According to IMDB trivia, Goldie Hawn and Sigourney Weaver were originally sought out for the roles of Annette and Gladys, respectively.

Melissa Joan Hart and Sarah Michelle Gellar auditioned for roles, apparently.

I haven’t seen the film in years, but it seemed like the cast was perfect.
