For me, while Thailand has some of the hottest young guys in Asia and they recently finally relaxed mask mandates, there is still way too much mask wearing. Japan is also a big offender.
Asian country you are least likely to visit

North Korea (obviously), but also China. Both have oppressive governments. I’d opt to visit Japan or South Korea, both of which are very civilized and not dangerous.

I'd like to visit Vietnam, Japan and Taiwan. Obviously North Korea and Myanmar are hard passes. Indonesia and Malaysia are too Islamic. Does Bangladesh have any tourists? My cousin says you automatically get diarrhea if you visit India - so no. Nepal, Laos, Camobdia, Bhutan seem too remote.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 11, 2022 8:53 AM |
North Korea (because old Korea hands swear the kimchi's much better in the South)
Eastern China (prefer to see the south and western parts)
Japan (great cinema, lousy cuisine, way too regimented/polite. But I would like to visit Okinawa.)
Bangladesh (overcrowded, dirt-poor)

by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 11, 2022 8:59 AM |
R27 Taiwan is boring. Malaysian cities like KL and Penang are predominantly Chinese and Indian, not Malay. And Bali is predominantly Hindu. Angkor Wat in Cambodia belongs on any bucket list.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 11, 2022 9:27 AM |
NK, Indonesia (don't like oppressive Muslim cultures and Bali is overrun with douchebags), Philippines (food not great, culturally uninteresting), Myanmar
I have been to Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia. Not a fan of the heat and humidity, but I would probably visit the latter two again. Yes Malaysia is majority Muslim, but it feels more diverse in most of the areas worth visiting. Nobody will bother you in KL or Penang. Cambodia was a culture shock, but Siem Reap was one of the most interesting places I have ever been.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 11, 2022 9:31 AM |
Cambodia was one of my favorite places to visit. The people are kind and welcoming.

Not into North Korea, obviously, but also none of the more strict fanatically religious arabic countries like Irak, Iran, Saudia Arabia, Kuwait, Afghanistan etc. Also never all that interested in South east Asia (I'd only go for free). Beautiful beaches but culturally not particularly appealing.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 11, 2022 12:27 PM |
R33 here, an exception to the South East Asia rule would be Vietnam, my mother and sister went and they still consider it their favorite trip they ever made. And the pictures were stunning. That said, there are many other countries from Asia I would go first.

Of the countries I haven't visited the only one that holds any interest for me is Oman.
I'd happily go back to all of the ones i have visited but in some cases it would only be to visit specific places/sites that i haven't yet been to: the Great Wall in China, Borobudur in Indonesia, and the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan, Varanasi and Jaipur in India. The difference being that I’ve been to Vegas - I’ll bet you’ve never been anywhere near Indonesia. Or anywhere outside the USA for that matter.
Funny how these threads devolve into opportunities for Americans to display their parochialism. And you all join in, blissfully unaware of it.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 12, 2022 9:40 AM |
[quote]Fancy rejecting entire continents because your vacation revolves entirely around sex.
Exactly. And conversely, I find gay men too keen on travel to the opposite side of the world because "Thailand has some of the hottest young guys" creepy as fuck. Inevitably they never mention any aspect of culture or geography, just straight the the exchange rate on whores.
Taiwan is low on my list for that very reason.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 12, 2022 10:30 AM |
R97 That's rather harsh. America itself is big enough to satisfy most Americans' dreams of wanderlust. And the usual two weeks' vacation doesn't leave much time for far-flung exotic travel. Not to mention $$.
So don't criticize what seems a parochial attitude. Express instead some sympathy that for so many Americans the opportunity to see Asia first-hand is very limited by circumstance.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 12, 2022 10:31 AM |
R90 Rewatch that video you linked. The over-water bungalow was 100 feet offshore, not 100 feet high on poles.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | December 12, 2022 10:34 AM |
[R72] and [R81] are both correct.
I get the impression that the Americans/Europeans who love going to those places, don't live around many of those people.
Which is why you find them so interesting and "exotic."
Try growing up in areas on the coasts which are heavily populated with them.
I guarantee you won't find them so interesting or exotic any more.

Brunei, North Korea & China, for reasons stated above (although I've always had a fascination with Hong Kong for some reason). With as beautiful as it is, and while I have no plans to commit crimes...Indonesia seems sketchy as fuck. Malaysia, Singapore...meh.
Japan is first on my list of places I want to see in Asia. I'd need a month there, at least. But living there for a year would be incredible. Rounding out my top three are Nepal & Bhutan. Mongolia would be interesting, too. Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar would be fascinating, but I'm not sure how safe they currently are. I know a number of Thai people from college, so it would be great to visit them, and I think I would have a better time that way...even if Thailand is overrated.

I was in Indonesia in the mid-90s. Stayed at a villa in Ubud on Bali. Loved it and the people and it was removed from the more annoying beach tourists near Jimbaron. Jakarta was filthy and had a whole different vibe than Ubud and Yogyakarta. I never had an overwhelming sense of oppressive Muslimness anywhere though. Lots of girls in short skirts and heels in Jakarta and bars everywhere. I'm sure things have changed though.
Side note-some of our group wanted to play at the famous Nirwanna golf course. They loved it and raved about the beauty and the pretty female caddies, etc. Apparently, Trump bought it at some point to rebrand and it's now full of potholes, rundown and deserted.

[quote]you haven't traveled much then. Completely ignorant statement to make.
No, R74, but you've made an arrogantly ignorant statement. I literally HATE crowds. Too many damn people there. And literally nothing I feel compelled to go see. Probably my least favorite cuisines. I've been all over North America & the Carribean, and would love to see parts South America, and would absolutely love to travel all of Europe. But I have zero desire to travel to Asia, The Middle East, or Africa. That's my personal opinion and choice. My taste. It's not ignorant. It's actually pretty well informed. What few things that interest me in those regions I've seen via documentaries. That's good enough. No need to go there.
Like, literally, the thought of visiting Tokyo is the stuff of my nightmares. I don't understand what anyone finds appealing about it, but I acknowledge that people do (and I have a very good friend who LOVES visiting there... he LOVES big dense cities, and HATES visiting small towns and countryside and beaches, which I love).
Different strokes for different folks, asshole. I'm perfectly fine with dying never having been there. And you'd have to pay me literally MILLIONS up front to get me to even consider visiting there. (and I would refuse to step food in China, thanks... or Russia... yes, that's a political thing).

R110 we don’t say “The Orient” any more, nor do we say “The Far East” for the same reason. But if we did, nobody would consider Samoa (either Western or American) - two separate entities - part of the region.
You need to invest in a map.

Who's "we" and what is "the same reason"?

“We” is anybody with some cultural sensitivity and “why” is because it’s Eurocentric.

R129 So, old woke one, you've eliminated "Mid-east" from your personal vocabulary as well?

none of them. I always felt that I was tortured in an Asian country in another lifetime as I have such an aversion to these counties, but not the people.

I feel an obligation to to go Asia for educational purposes - but have no desire to go like with Europe or South America. Combined with the expense, hassle and flight time, I’ve put it off for years. I was going to go to Japan in 2020 - then Covid. Now I’m trying to motivate myself to start booking again - but I really have zero desire. But I feel like I am missing a crucial element of learning about life by not going to Asia.

This idiot probably won't want to travel anywhere in Asia after this remark at commencement.

The Philippines look miserable. And the food isn’t good unless it’s someone’s home cooking. And even then!
