Supermodel of the World
Every model is referred to as a supermodel now, but there's only a few who are worthy of the title
Christie Brinkley doesn't get enough credit for being the first supermodel, according to Cindy Crawford, which was also a takedown of Janice Dickinson for claiming herself
Who is your favorite supermodel?

Suzy Parker and Twiggy, noted above, would definitely qualify as "supermodels" under today's definition, so if you're applying it in retrospect, Suzy Parker wins as she was the first (in the 50's). However, the first time the "supermodel" term was actually used was with Cheryl Tiegs in the 70's.
Google her name you'll see she is called "the first supermodel".

There's no male supermodel because fashion is mainly targeted to women and women care far more about it than men do. Supermodels simply exist to market fashion. If more men spent money on fashion on par with women then there would be male supermodels. But most men need to prioritize their income and status rather than looks in order to attract a mate. Women rely more on their appearance.

Forgive me if I’ve told this before but in the early nineties I was minding my own business on South Bondi beach in Sydney when two people arrived and parked themselves along side me. I’m pretty territorial about personal space at the beach but I relaxed that rule when I realised that it was Helena Christensen and Michael Hutchence. There are few words to describe how beautiful she was - topless and golden with messy hair.

R48: I’m annoyed by Cindy now, but she was the most diversified of supermodels. She didn’t need Cover Girl, as she was the main spokesmodel for Revlon for several years. She made millions each year for a few months of work with them. Besides magazine covers and runway shows, she had exercise videos, an MTV show, commercials for Pepsi, Blockbuster Video, Pizza Hut, and Cadillac. She also got away with posing for Playboy during a time when the fashion industry frowned on those type of photos. Niki wishes she had a career that big.

Boring Brinkley most certainly WASN'T the first supermodel by a long mile Frau OP.
Dovima and Dorian Leigh in the 50s were very well known by their faces in the US, but their names.
However the first genuine global well known supermodels were Twiggy and Veruschka.
Twiggy was a global household name.
And Veruschka. as an artist, who was also photographed by artists, was 1,000,000,000 more interesting than frau-fave Brinkley
Life magazine featured her in a cover story back in 1967, which was the equivalent then of winning the Oscars.

Kate Moss has 8 US Vogue covers but 39 UK ones. 39! That's kind of ridiculous. Poor Helena has only 2 US Vogue covers and she was part of a collage of runway shots for one, and in a group of five supermodels for the other. I guess Wintour didn't like her all that much? I thought she was stunning.

Supermodel means million dollar contracts , runway work and numerous major covers. Naomi Campbell is the ultimate super model. She changed the way models were seen on the runway for her walk. The model became a bigger star than the designer and designers sought Naomi out to fill seats. People wanted to see her more than the clothes. Even still she made the clothes look amazing. Pretty soon everyone was trying to keep up with her. And she is still working and walking today. She doesn't need to, but she is still in demand after 30 years - as a model, which is unheard of.
Btw, I have seen her in person. She is one of those people that you look at and think you couldn't have been anything else but a model. She doesn't make sense in any other form. And I have seen her walk and it's effortless and perfect but never supersedes what she is wearing - it illuminates it.

Tyson Beckford. He had several million dollar contracts and was the face of Ralph Lauren for years. His face, the proportions and balance are just insane. He was the first non-asian model with asiatic eyes which seemed to become a requirement for all male models for the next 20 years. He is probably the most recognized male model around the world.

W Magazine on Naomi's Walk:
Naomi’s walk is quite clearly the best in the business, a combination of swagger and grace that no other model has ever truly replicated (not even by those to whom she has given lessons, like Gigi Hadid). Her hips and shoulders sway while her back stays ramrod straight. Occasionally she’ll twirl, like models are supposed to in the movies. And she slowly smiles at the cameras, like she is very, very pleased with herself. She should be.

Yasmeen Ghauri ruled the runway with Naomi and had one of the best walks of all time. A Pakistani/German beauty from Canada, she was at the very top in the 1990s, in-demand by all the big designers. She was hired for haute couture as well as for commercial work like Victoria’s Secret.
Yasmeen could’ve been a supermodel with a household name alongside Cindy and Linda, but she was a private person. Unlike many of her peers, she did her job and went home. She didn’t court fame. She didn’t date celebrities. She wasn’t caught up in the hype. No one could call her thirsty. I think she was classy and grounded like Christy Turlington. That ages better.

Tyson Beckford is a good one. I don’t think there has been any male model since that has had the same level of recognition.
When I think of the word supermodel it means: beauty that made their careers (not clever marketing like Twiggy), earned a lot of money, had a degree of longevity (that leaves out Janice), is recognizable to the general public even to those that don’t have an interest in fashion, recognized by their peers in the industry as being one of the greats.

R97 By fucking lots of powerful guys since she was a teen in Brasil. And for some weird reason, the gays who run the fashion industry were attracted to her masculine features and turned her into a standard of beauty. R124 And it was her relationship with DiCaprio that really skyrocketed her career at a time that people still cared about models. She was ugly as fuck before all the plastic surgery (that didn't help her get rid of her horse face and masculine features) and has aged badly. And I will never get why Americans deemed her as "curvy" and "healthy" when her body was as curvy as a ruler without the breast implants and photoshop, while in her own country she was considered almost anorexic. Fake tits and fake tan were enough to consider skinny and druggie models "curvy" and "healthy" in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Wow, I had no idea r132. Her clothes were in Kmart 20+ years ago. I guess her Sports Illustrated covers gave her a broader appeal and greater recognition, especially among men. It's interesting; it seems most of her products are not fashion related so the consumer base is much larger than it would be if she limited herself to beauty and fashion.
But still, based on her modeling work, she was never in the "supermodel" category.
[QUOTE]Kathy Ireland Worldwide, the former supermodel's company, sells many things which aren't associated with most models - who tend to put their name to clothing and cosmetics - including ceiling fans, flooring, mattresses, desks, end tables, media centres, beds, ottomans, bookcases, rugs, carpets, headboards and windows. Her namesake vinyl and plastic replacement windows sell more than $400 million-worth a year through one retailer alone, but that doesn't mean she's achieved all her ambitions.

I assume it's because she and her husband are very litigious.

I never thought Stephanie Seymour was that great at actual posing. She was a tad awkward. I mean, she got the rudiments of it okay, but lacked that sort of liquid flair that makes a great model.

"Gisele is like Elle Macpherson where she became well known to straight guys for showing her tits in Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and then shoe-horned their basic boring looks into the "supermodel" category undeservedly"
That's not true, Gisele was in high fashion magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue all the time. You couldn't pick up an issue of Vogue circa 2000 without seeing 10000 pictures of her in it. I don't really like Gisele that much but she wasn't just a swimsuit model.

If you get all your history lessons from TV, there’s going to be some gaps. Dickinson was a very well regarded model in her era, and fellow model Tara Shannon said in an interview Dickinson was the best of their generation (1970s and early 80s)

Stephanie Seymour was pure Florida trash. She had a good career, but it could’ve been great if she had laid off the drugs. Her fellow piece of Florida trash, Carolyn Murphy, shows what a difference not being an unreliable druggie makes (unlike Stephanie, she was one of the top girls in her cohort of supermodels—mid-to-late 90’s).

Since reading this thread I recall about mid /late 80’s a blonde model, possibly European or Scandinavian who was around and photographed in campaigns with Renee Simonsen and some of the other rising supermodels when in group shots. She had a wavy or at least full bodied head of blonde hair maybe just past the shoulders and went only by a first name. I feel like she had a magazine campaign maybe of some sort too. She seemed like she would have become big but then just disappeared and I’m not sure if it was because Claudia Schiffer and Karen mulder and other blondes came on the scene and swallowed her career up or if she just aged out/met a rich husband or what as the supermodel stuff was just starting to ramp up. I was just starting to take notice of the model g world at the time so was barely a teenager but I just can’t place her or find her online. Hard without recalling her name. Again, went by first name only and I think it might have sounded Scandinavian. Definitely not North American sounding name. Does this ring a bell at all?

R204. IIRC Monika Schnarre was only about 14 when when she won that contest. I believe Eileen Ford got a bit fed up with her as she wasn’t perusing the opportunities given to her as hard as she wanted. But she was pretty young. I do t think she loved modelling in her younger years. She still looks great. I think she avoided the fast living the supermodels got into so that is part of the reason. R234: “Oh, please” yourself. You think all it takes to model is just stand around and look pretty? Clearly, you haven’t seen much of America’s Next Top Model and its many iterations in other countries.
There were plenty of contestants who had the looks, height, and weight that the fashion industry requires, but these young women (and men) sucked at being photographed. They didn’t know how to pose or walk with assurance. They looked clumsy.
Working models have a skill set. They are good at convincingly showing different expressions in photos. It’s like a form of acting, but without speaking. They can play a character for a photo shoot. They can convey confidence or some intensity of emotion. If you’re nervous or feeling awkward, the camera easily captures it. You’re not getting hired for the job.
Models know how to move fluidly on the runway and how to pose to show off the clothes and accessories in the best possible way. At least, those were the standard requirements before 2010. Now we have nepo models who are stiff and walk like robots. We have dead-eyed zombies in photos (looking at you, Kendall Jenner).
Gisele is a great example of a top model who is successful despite having an unexceptional face. No great beauty, but she smolders in photos. She knows how to show her best angles. She poses without looking like a dork. There are beautiful women who don’t have these skills. Next Top Model showed that some contestants had a natural ability (a talent) to model, while others could never get it right no matter how much help they got from the pros.

Also, not everyone could deal with the rejection. It occurs at all levels. One of Helena's first jobs was a Chanel ad shot by KL himself. But she never got a US Vogue cover of her own and she wasn't included amongst the ten models on the 100th anniversary cover in 1991. Despite having featured her several times on the cover of UK Vogue, Tilberis never gave her a US Bazaar cover either, she only got one before Tilberis took over.
Then there's the travelling, the competing for jobs.

Let's split hairs.
Heidi Klum was never a long-term successful model and when she was a young model she was very far from a top model let alone a supermodel.
Heidi Klum made her fame by cosplaying as a "top model" or "supermodel" on entertainment vehicles.
I like her and respect the fortune she has made as an entertainer. Everyone seems to like her or she wouldn't have been around this long, raking it in.

R262: Those “plenty of models” aren’t known to people who don’t follow fashion. They’re not interesting enough for the general public to care about and designers like it that way.
In other words, they are not mainstream famous, unlike the ‘90s supermodels who were widely known. People who didn’t give a crap about fashion or modeling recognized Cindy and Linda and Naomi as easily as they recognized movie stars.
That’s the point. Nepo models like Kendall, Bella, and Kaia are recognized now because of their famous connections, not because they possess great beauty or have skill in their profession or have any charisma. They are not supermodels because the attention they get is based on empty hype and planted gossip.
These unsung models that you mention are not supermodels, either. They wouldn’t be because the fashion industry killed the supermodel phenomenon. Designers don’t want a repeat of a time when models got more attention than their clothes. It was a time when models had more bargaining power and got the salaries they demanded. They generated a lot of interest and marketing, so designers paid up but eventually resented it. This is why designers promoted the waifs and heroin chic by the mid-90s. It’s why they hired many bland girls. A girl with the beauty and abilities of a young Naomi would not be hired today because she would pull focus with her looks and personality. Yet, many comments from younger people on social media ask why we don’t have fashion models on the same level as ‘90s supermodels.

R265 You make solid points. Cindy, Naomi, Claudia and etc were classically beautiful women that the fashion and commercial world and straight men and women adored. They stood out and crossed over into different mediums. Many people didn't care about fashion or models back then but knew who they were. The 80s and 90s seemed to be the only time when that was a thing. Most models today are clearly hired to be walking clothes hangers and have no sex appeal or charisma like Gigi and Kaia.
by Anonymous | reply 266 | December 19, 2022 7:55 PM

The reason models aren't as famous as they were in the 90s is because fashion magazines, and the magazine industry in general, are dying. There are plenty of models as attractive as Naomi, and unlike Naomi, aren't complete cunts, but no one pays attention to fashion magazines like Vogue anymore so no one cares

Over 250 posts and no mention of former Ford model, Pam Dawber! Not only could she model, she could act, check out her made-for-tv triumph, American Geisha! Pam was a supermodel before Angie Dickinson came up with the concept!

Vogue, GQ and other magazines cheapened their brands by putting every celebrity on the cover though they are grasping at straws to save their dying sales. But the entire mentality changed as well. Nobody is spending money on luxury fashion except foreigners from Asia and India. Thrifting and fast fashion is what is in.

Was Elaine Irwin considered a supermodel? She appeared on the cover of the famous 100-year anniversary issue of Vogue, along with all of the top 90’s supermodels (excluding Stephanie Seymour)…she also had exclusive contracts (Pantene, Ralph Lauren), and was married to a rock star (John Cougar Mellancamp).
At the same time, if someone merely referred to “Elaine,” nobody would know what they were talking about. I personally think she was gorgeous, but I would struggle to identify her in most pictures.

It’s interesting to me how Gisele is treated like the last supermodel, when she was technically part of a group of models who marked the end of an era.
Just like Kate Moss was kind of the group leader for the mid-to-late 90’s supermodels, which included Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow, Carolyn Murphy, Trish Goff, Liya Kebede and others…Gisele was the group leader for the early 00’s supermodels, which included Maggie Rizer, Angela Lindvall, Frankie and Missy Rayder, Carmen Kass, and Karolina Kurkova. She broke out as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, but those other models tended to walk the same shows and alternate covers with Gisele.

R277 Hall had a weird career. She was hyped up twice (once when she was in her teens and again in her early-20s), but never really got to that next level. There was some gossip years ago that the Ralph Lauren people regretted signing her to that long-term contract when her career never really took off and it was too expensive to buy out.
I thought she was gorgeous though.

Bridget Hall appeared on the cover of one of the best September issues (of Vogue) of all time. It had a vintage 30’s or 40’s vibe.
She came at a weird time I guess. She had the covers and contracts, but she seemed to only have high fashion appeal at a time it became increasingly important to be a VS Angel, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, or at least a Tom Ford/John Galliano/Karl Lagerfeld/Donatella Versace muse.

She came from a middle class home, so her parents emphasized on her to have alternative route early on. In addition to being #5 on the list of models with the most American Vogue covers (behind Lauren Hutton, Karen Graham, Jean Shrimpton, and Cindy Crawford…tied with Claudia Schiffer and Jean Patchett), Amber Valletta appeared on an iconic cover of Time…shot by Herb Ritts. She was also a Versace muse who originally debuted J-Lo’s infamous Grammys dress on the runway.

I know she's not a supermodel, but I have always thought Diane Lane was beautiful. She was captivating in the outsiders, way back in the day. If I have to pick a bona fide supermodel, though, I'd say Stephanie Seymore.

What's the point of that comment in a thread about Supermodels.

If this is Kristen I certainly don't recognize her. I figured it was a transed Nadège du Bospertus

Apparently, it’s not Kristen or Nadège—it’s Omahyra. I vaguely remember her as one of the early 00’s group of models (she was to Gisele, Maggie Rizer, and Angela Lindvall, what Nadège was to Cindy, Linda, and Naomi…JV as opposed to Varsity).
