My feed’s now proliferating more right wing spam than my email does unsolicited junk mail. There aren’t enough hours in the day to block and delete it all. It’s unreadable. Was it for this purpose that Musk got foreign funding?
Twitter has become complete trash

I've noticed that all sort of shit is popping up that is from people I expressly do not follow and have no interest in. The language and abusive content is off the charts.
It's going full-bore Nazi.

Deplete that crap they are probably following your every move.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 10, 2022 7:20 AM |
I don’t notice any of that. OP just doesn’t know how to work an app. Stop following people you don’t like and use the muted words feature. You’ll never see anything about Trump again.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 10, 2022 7:31 AM |
I’m getting crap (loads of it) from people I’ve never followed.
Why work to fix Elon’s mess.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 10, 2022 8:14 AM |
Then leave the app.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 10, 2022 8:16 AM |
I agree, I have never so much inflammatory tweets, but I find it's going to help my purpose, which is to leave the dump fire that Twitter has become.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 10, 2022 8:19 AM |
I don't have OP's problem at all. My twitter is fine. I see who I follow and don't see who I don't follow unless someone I follow retweets them. I mainly use my laptop, though. Maybe it's people who use their phones who are having this issue?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 10, 2022 8:27 AM |
So it has already become the “hellscape” that Musky expressly said it wouldn’t? Colour me shocked.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 10, 2022 9:29 AM |
OP is lying or doesn't know how retweets work.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 10, 2022 9:33 AM |
They removed all the blocks I had of every blue check verified account I'd previously blocked. I thought it was just political accounts like Meghan McCain, but today Donnie Osmond showed up on my timeline, and that creep got blocked by me years ago.
It doesn't just show up in RTs like r10 implies, there are also "you may be interested in" kinds of tweets that Twitter puts into your feed, whether you want it or not.
And now there's "Related Tweets" that show up in the middle of comments in Twitter threads.
AAAAND on top of all that, when you tap on a trending topic, the first 10-15 tweets I get are random popular tweets that have NOTHING to do with the topic I just tapped on.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 10, 2022 9:48 AM |
R11 is correct. Until Musk's takeover my feed was limited to my professional dialogue (interior design/architecture/urban planning), a few friends and a handful of cultural figures, editors and authors who interest me. As of now Elon Musk keep making announcements and I keep getting tweets from smears of shit like Laura Loomer and Roger Stone. I "might also be interested in" tweets from lowlife jackals I have actually no interest in, and since I don't think Jeff VanderMeer, Caroline McCarthy, Emma Straub or Paul Rudd are following white supremist accounts I fail to see organic crossover.
I've stopped posting professional content and simply am checking in from to time on what I assume is a terminal case.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 10, 2022 11:51 PM |
Elon made his initial bid for Twitter during a grandiose/manic episode, tried to back out after he came down to earth, then when he realized he couldn’t, panicked and took money from the high finance equivalents of loan sharks. Then when the sale went through he went manic again, fired half the employees and mounted his infamous “hardcore” intimidation campaign against the rest. So really at this point the fact that Twitter is still up and running is a testament to the soundness of its existing infrastructure and the honesty and dedication of its remaining staff.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 11, 2022 12:10 AM |
I tweet Elon a picture of my morning shit every morning. No context just a daily shot of crap in a toilet.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 11, 2022 12:12 AM |
I don't use my account for porn, but all of a sudden my inbox is filled with tweets from scantily clad women in suggestive poses.
Anyone else experiencing this?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 11, 2022 12:14 AM |
OP using the mute functions works best for me
In addition you can use a drop down menu on a RW tweet and say "I'm not interested in this tweet" and you will see LESS of those types of tweets from RWers
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 11, 2022 12:15 AM |
I deleted my nsfw Twitter. Since Elon bought it, the whole vibe of the platform has gone downhill. I'm also just kind of over everyone being able to be like 'here's my dick! wanna suck it?'. I like a little mystery these days. The primary reason is also I have a really amazing boyfriend and no need to look at that garbage.

Very likely OP. Very likely Mush purchased it to destroy it and ultimately shut it down. As of right now - there is no viable, reputable alternative.
The fired ex-employees of Twitter should band together and invent a new platform. They have the knowhow. There would be a lot of goodwill towards them and for a new platform to succeed.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 11, 2022 12:50 AM |
I started seeing tweets by some UK high profile COVID denier. Also, some random porn whores. To the best of my knowledge I never read or followed something along those lines. I'm on the brink of deactivating it since pretty much everything I'm interested in (news, arts, sports, professionally related stuff, etc, and cute videos of animals - don't judge!) I can get elsewhere including notifications from various apps. Twitter has kind of outlived its purpose for me; I'm not there to be the audience for the shit that rejects from the normal society have to spew.

I had the misfortune of being drawn into conversation with a 70 year old, full-on Musk fanboy yesterday. He was raving about colonizing space, brain chips, "restoring our free speech," exposing the corrupt government, etc.
The kicker was, until the conversation turned, he'd been expressing fairly sane, progressive views and seemed like your usual old, working-class, urban Dem. It was surreal and disturbing but unfortunately, these sorts of interactions have become a common experience over the past several years. Not all Musk related, of course, but hearing warped, incongruent, unsound, and strongly-held views from otherwise relatively sane friends, family, and strangers has become my norm. Rich sociopaths and internet have destroyed shared reality and I am fucking sick of this.

In an effort to enrich themselves and/or destroy the U.S., numerous people (including oligarchs, authoritarian monarchs and other wealthy lowlifes) got what they wanted from Trump by appealing to his vanity.
Similar people, uncomfortable with the reach of certain media and the dissemination of truth likely encouraged Musk to buy Twitter and remake it in his image: a guaranteed dick wilter.

I signed up for an alternative to Twitter but there is no alternative to Twitter. This is precisely why Twitter is being removed as a platform.
Within the first month of use on a Twitter alternative, an account using a racial slur as a username showed up in my feed.
In the decade of using Twitter, I never had that experience. I never saw porn on Twitter either unless I clicked on a link posted here on Datalounge.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 22, 2023 5:28 PM |
Something I don't think has been mentioned yet is that there are now two categories of feeds.
--Following: people you actually follow
--For You: people Twitter curates based on some algorithm designed for (rage inducing) engagement.
It's an easy toggle back to "Following"--the accounts one really wants to see-- but many people don't/forget to do it because they never asked to be switched to "For You" in the first place.
Ironically, because I have a couple of different lists of accounts which I am curious in but never have or want to engage with, separate from my main follows, my For You recommendations are almost always those people. This creates a odd mix of emotionally charged tweets that I largely actually agree with from Bernie Bros, Libertarians, moderate Republicans/unicorns and self-important celebrities. Unlike most people here complaining that their feed is infested with tweets from the opposite side, when I find myself unintentionally switched over that feed seems to be stuff designed expressly to make me lash out in righteous agreement.
(I don't)

R59- I set my account as you described and I did see some right wing posts, but very few. Idk what it is like now because I deleted my my account the minute it was announced that EM bought it. The right wing fascist crave attention and an audience. They do not get satisfaction from posting with like minded people. They live to offend others.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 22, 2023 5:37 PM |
R60 Before I closed the account, I started arguing with a right wing account who fell in my feed. The account holder liked a comment I posted then began arguing with me about everything else. I asked the account holder what they are doing on Twitter when other platforms that cater to right wing perspectives are available. The account holder actually answered! She said those other platforms are vacuums filled with people who are trying to sell you stuff, MLM schemes?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 22, 2023 5:39 PM |
R48 same here.
Even in my Following stream I’m getting “promoted” posts from RWNJs at the expense of long-followed accounts. I haven’t seen Jill Wine-Banks and Joyce Vance White in my feed for months—I have to seek them out.
Musk wants the chaos and anger over every square inch of the platform, I guess. It has turned into a sewer.

[quote]Now right-wing creeps on Twitter are complaining to Elon that their viewer numbers are going down and Elon is groveling and saying he'll look into it.
That's because, like I said back in December earlier in the thread, they took away all the blocks we had on blue checks and rightwing accounts. Those accounts got a burst of views because of that, but slowly, as people started re-blocking them, they've dropped back down to the normal view count they had before.
Remember that the conspiracy at the time was that Twitter was "shadowbanning" rightwingers. They weren't, but Elon said they were, and to fake that convincingly, he just had all the blocks of key rightwing accounts removed, knowing that it would artificially lift their view count. He isn't very smart though and didn't think about what would happen a few months later when the count went back to what it had been before he bought the site.

I always had a strong dislike for the format of Twitter and the harried "right now" urgency of it. I don't use social media for general news and opinion but for professional and allied interests such as R12 describes. Twitter always seemed the not a good match at all. I did maintain a throwaway anonymous account that I opened initially because of a couple research project links not available elsewhere.
I had this for less than a year straddling the Musk changes and after some initial throttling to keep a very narrow view it worked well enough: I got just a small trickle of suggested feed, some somewhat close to a targeted topic, other suggestions not even remotely related but just stupid, broad interest content. Taking care to specify "no more like this" to the worst suggestions it stayed mostly to a narrow focus and a very slow stream.
As Musk changes took effect, there was a definite uptick in suggestions and they were not crudely mismatches of search terms but a push to steer me to political opinion and current events topics (with a strong Right bias.)
In the earlier crude matches, you could at least see the logic of trying, like an old auntie hopelessly bad at birthday presents: '"because you like Architecture, we thought you would like these new Frank Lloyd Wright coloring books" or "here are the 6 new colors you and your walls need to know for 2023." Post Musk, I got Suggestions for Laura Ingrahm, Trump announcements of upcoming rallies as news and pundits and conservative news outlets, things that had fuck all to do with architecture.
I closed the account that I had keep just to see if a narrowly defined subject interest would yield anything that I might otherwise miss. Except for the initial links to research papers that brought me there, there was no reason for.mw to stay.
Of course if your interests are broader and more political/general news, Twitter is a different animal. But for me, social media was never a first source for general and political news and analysis, and Twitter with its immediacy/urgency was never going to be a good match, even if it incidentally turned out to be a good source for highly defined interests, which it didn't.
For all my throttling of topics, I could see Musk's interference easily enough. Yes, I could reduce the number if intrusions and seriously mismatched interests, but there was no no reason, no reward for.me to fight against it.

I have certain journalists and such on a "list" and I find the people on it dwindling - just now it was mostly Guardian article links, AP, BBC News, CNN, MSNBC, and oddly, Sky News. I don't think all the journos have quit - they are just giving me the commercial news outlet tweet. Weird. It was this thread that prompted me to check. Might be the time of day. Anyway, no rightwing spamming at the moment but just all news outlet articles.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | January 23, 2023 8:52 AM |
News sources haven't shown up in Twitter searches for me since about two days after Musk took over. Briefly, right after Tim Cook scared Musk for a couple of days, they showed back up, then they disappeared again.
A lot of the complaints about the media "ignoring" the mass shooting in Monterey Park were really just the aftereffects of Musk fucking with the algorithms. News outlets were reporting on it but you couldn't see any of them in a search. Instead, I was getting search results that were mostly groypers responding to photos of dead bodies saying "no blood, that's curious" and then tagging the FBI.

The "knots" some of you have to twist in order to have a feed of information that satisfies your personal taste. Honestly, you're all slaves to the feed of insta-news. I like the description of Twitter having a "harried" quality na sorry you've joined that very small mass of people in it.
Twitter has always been beloved by the news media (journalists who think their every tweet is a must-read and earth-shattering for the salvation of the republic - here's news, THEY AREN'T) and politicians who have been convinced that it is the best platform to a) reach younger voters and to b) get their personal message out on different issues without being manipulated by the media. It's closed-loop world and it's dangerous.
It's been infiltrated by right-wing characters who are awful? Oh my gosh, I'm shocked, shocked I say! I mean the previous president had years to use the platform to type out his latest "thought" and share with the world... and his believers flocked to Twitter to masterbate over every foul-smelling tweet, which they forwarded and shared and the new owner encourages bad behavior.
So sad that Twitter just isn't what it once was - boo fucking hoo. CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT, Deprive the platform of oxygen, let it die a slow painful death of irrelevance, Man I'm glad I never dove into this particular swamp.

OP just put them on a public list entitled "Lobotomized Shitheads". Make sure they can see. That'll do the trick.
