Why was she a miserable bitch? She was famous, talented, wealthy and had three children who loved her. That bitch even had a Dakota apartment! She treatment of those "beneath" her, was despicable. There was no justification for it.
Of course, she was all hearts and flowers with Gregory Peck and her other famous friends. She was on her best behavior. Frank Sinatra dodged a bullet; he almost married her

Kind of gruff, demanding but open to suggestions. The hairstylist worked with Bacall many times. Bacall "was mean to everyone except her hair and makeup people".
No dirt here.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 8, 2022 1:53 AM |
The worst story I read about Bacall was of her calling Shelly Winters to demand to speak to Winters' husband, Anthony Franciosa. Bacall was having an affair with Anthony Franciosa.

One evening in the late 70'sI was walking past the MOMA and there was a limousine idling at the entrance. I was about 4 feet from the car when I was motioned to stop in my tracks as Ms. Bacall swanned out of the building entrance and literally strode, head held high without even a sidewards glance to check for other pedestrian traffic, directly to the waiting car. At the time I didn't know who it was and really didn't care either actually, because I wasn't into caring about celebrities and stars or hollywood in my late teenage years. Eventually though, after seeing pictures of her I realized who that statuesque woman with the sharp facial features was.
I don't even really know why I just wrote about this silly little recollection. Another time I'll tell you about an equally anodyne run-in with Chuck Barris. Yes, that Chuck Barris, of The Gong Show fame...

The character of demanding diva Mary Ford in the novel “Piece of Work” is based on Bacall. Written by a former publicity person who had to tour with her.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 8, 2022 5:05 AM |
She was, by most accounts, not nice in general. I appreciate a no-nonsense attitude and have a bit of that in me myself, but Bacall was beyond that—she really seemed to be a self-important bitch, especially in her later years. I think her bitterness really ramped up after Bogart died. There really isn’t an excuse for it, though. I have mixed feelings about her. The anecdotes that cast and crew of “The Fan” have told about her are kind of appalling.
At the end of the day, I suspect her nasty attitude came from deep-seated insecurity, which is usually the case when people conduct themselves like this.
Chloe Sevigny has always sort of reminded me of Bacall a little, but I don’t think she remotely has the same kind of mean streak. Sevigny is just a bit pretentious (and also seems insecure to me underneath it all), but I don’t think she’s an outright raging cunt.

I just read a memoir by Lee Marvin's first wife, whose best friend at college was Bacall's cousin. They spent a Christmas with Bacall and Bogart in the late 40s, and she said Bogart was nice and Bacall .... wasn't. I guess she never changed.

The irony. Becall talked about how she would drop by Katherine Hepburn's estate on the East Coast for a visit, and Hepburn would be an absolute cunt to her! Seems Betty Becall wasn't as "well liked" as she thought!

[quote]r28 she really seemed to be a self-important bitch, especially in her later years… I suspect her nasty attitude came from deep-seated insecurity
I wonder if she was bitter that she never became a hugely in-demand star. Her fame was built on her two, early, Howard Hawks films and her marriage to Bogart. Probably she felt she deserved to be A List, all the time. Even after her Broadway comeback Hollywood wasn’t breaking down her door with a string of important roles.
I think her real talent was as a model, when she was a teen.

I was reading Colleen Dewhurst biography and it was between her and Lauren Bacall for the role of Murphy's mother in Murphy Brown
They went withe Dewhurst, because Bacall reputation was so toxic, they didn't want to deal with her

One of the reasons why Lauren Bacall lost the Oscar
The ENTIRE Academy votes for the acting categories - Bacall pissed off to many people who work behind the scenes, they would never vote for her.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 8, 2022 3:26 PM |
Bacall's abruptness and harshness was renowned. She didn't seem a very happy person. I think her biggest problem was that she didn't have a powerful man in her life after Robards divorced her in '69, to keep her in line. She always seemed to be mad at the world.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 8, 2022 3:28 PM |
R16- Didn't she write a scathing story about Ava Gardner in one of her books? Something about a birthday cake? I can't remember.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 8, 2022 5:47 PM |
She also accidentally forgot to call out her Robards son on whatever awards show, but called out the other children of Bogart's. She said the award was tainted because she felt so awful getting caught up in the Bogie aspect or something.
She also let her dog hump a little teddy bear.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 8, 2022 6:28 PM |
Bacall is a very typical type of old school “high class” (she willed herself into it, Miss Betty from the Bronx) aged Jewish NYC woman that died out with the city after 9/11.

(Kathleen's gargantuan ego deserves a comeuppance.)

R46, her son, Sam Robards, was her favorite child. She just gushed on and on about him in her first autobiography. (Of course, he was her baby, her youngest child.)

An old coworker of mine was in a play with Robarts during that marriage and said he’d never met as foul mouthed a woman as Bacall.
And this guy was an alcoholic, so you know he’d heard it ALL.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 9, 2022 12:11 AM |
A classic kiss up, punch down termagant. Kander & Ebb in their joint biography Colored Lights talk about her being fine with them, but mean to underlings. Stories of her mistreating assistants and constantly hiring new ones, wait staff (the "bad potato" story), etc. were always in circulation when she was alive and on the NYC scene. Like many stars, she could be the most beguiling, delightful person if she thought you were her equal or her better or she needed something from you that it didn't debase her to ask for.
When she was on stage, she was able to discard or mask it, or somehow seem to be untroubled, vital and alive, smart and hip. Except for her last Broadway outing, Waiting in the Wings, where she seemed old and tired. Plenty of stories there too, from Alvin Colt saying "everyone was nice...with one exception" to Bacall going on about her friendship with Coward until Rosemary Harris in her ladylike way reminded the company that she had known Noel Coward too.
She was tough throughout her Broadway career, going back to all the out of town firings and quitting during Goodbye Charlie.

The Dakota apartment, when her kids put it up for sale.
She bought it in 1961 for just $48,000, if you can believe it. Granted I'm no real estate expert, but even for 1961 that seemed awfully cheap for an apartment like that.

R42, Colleen Dewhurst was the best choice for Murphy Brown's mother. She was an incredibly gifted and classically trained stage actress. She performed in Shakespeare, Eugene O'Neill, Edward Albee, and Arthur Miller plays. She would've made mincemeat out of Bacall.
