Inspired by the recent “Holiday Affair” thread. I recently completed my annual Christmastime viewing of 1940’s “Remember the Night” with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray. This is such a wonderful holiday film that unfortunately is not as widely seen and well known as it should be. Stanwyck is just excellent here.
The demeaning way Fred MacMurray's character treats his valet really ruins it for me.

I’m a cynical bitch and the Christmas Eve-New Years stretch where hardened Stanwyck is the recipient of love from MacMurray’s family makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The Motels cover of the title song charted in 1984.

It was Stanwyck’s first collaboration with Edith Head.
It really is a good film, although I agree with R1. The valet character was the low point of the movie. Not unlike Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But black actors had to take what they could if they wanted steady work in Hollywood.
