Young adult was good but one mistake I think the writers made was setting it in Minneapolis. I feel like her character would have high tailed it to L.A. or NYC by 19. She just seemed to shallow to stay in a Midwestern city.

Charlize has always been overrated as an actress because she’s “beautiful” (never saw it, she always looked vaguely trans, which is why I suspect DLers like her looks). Good looking women have much lower bars for what constitutes good acting, which is why you see such overpraise of Michelle Pfeiffer (who I think is overall much better than Charlize!) and more recently Margot Robbie. Mediocrity of lowered expectations.

Many European actresses are stunning and can really act, but in American films (which greatly prefer girl next door types) they would never succeed. Eva Green should have Charlize’s acclaim and profile, but is too legitimately beautiful and intelligent to achieve it in the States.

Vivien Leigh was a beautiful woman who was an excellent actress. Faye Dunaway, when her head was still somewhat screwed on, was excellent. Two older examples, but there were many more.

Of recent years…cannot think of any primarily English speaking actresses that are both gorgeous and great actresses. Julianne Moore maybe? Diane Lane?
