Restaurant refuses service to Conservative Christian group
by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 11, 2022 1:53 AM |
Well well well. Religious nuts Stung by the same logic they use on others.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 7, 2022 1:21 PM |
But, but.. discrimination is only OK when WE get to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 7, 2022 1:23 PM |
Baaahahahahaha
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 7, 2022 1:34 PM |
Wonder what SCOTUS will say about this.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 7, 2022 1:42 PM |
This is the future. These people will have to eat at their own shitty restaurants and use GeoCities templates for their websites.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 7, 2022 1:49 PM |
Of course, they will use this to bolster their claim that Christians are persecuted in the US...
What they should be is prosecuted!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 7, 2022 1:50 PM |
Now they know how it feels.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 7, 2022 2:29 PM |
Discrimination against gays is explained by claims of religious freedom. What religious beliefs could the restaurant owners cite which would stand up in court?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 7, 2022 2:30 PM |
Those Christian types don't tip for shit, so good for the restaurant. Ask any server stuck working Sundays.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 7, 2022 2:30 PM |
Yeah, so right, R6.
To All US Pigfucker Religious Leaders:
When I can have all my and my employees' salaries tax free, along with all my church properties AND side hustles, you can come after me for not accommodating your fat greasy asses in MY business.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 7, 2022 2:32 PM |
Justice for Merrymount, if a couple of centuries too late.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 7, 2022 2:57 PM |
This will continue - Conservative Christians - or at least people claiming to be - will continue to discriminate. Around the fringes - other groups will discriminate as in this story. But given America's work slave, money-loving culture (and money-NEEDING reality), I'd imagine that the vast, vast majority of businesses go about with business as usual and serve anyone - no matter their beliefs - and if they have a problem they'll spit on a sandwich or talk shit about the customers in the kitchen. That said, if the Supreme Court decision is decided so that you can discriminate due to your religious beliefs - the number of businesses discriminating will increase, though it will still be an overall tiny percentage of businesses.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 7, 2022 2:58 PM |
In all the threads about bakeries refusing to serve gay couples, we're inundated with rightwing trolls saying "The real problem is that gays go to bakeries owned by fundies, they should just go to a bakery that will serve them and not force people into supporting their lifestyle," yet somehow not a single one of those trolls has said the same thing here. How odd.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 7, 2022 3:09 PM |
The real problem is that conservative Xtians go to bakeries owned by bigots. They should just go to a bakery that will serve them and not fund bigots and their bigotry.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 7, 2022 3:15 PM |
EVERYONE should discriminate against conservative Christians, everywhere, all the time. Give them a taste of their medicine. When they complain, simply explain they're only receiving exactly what they're giving. If they don't like being discriminated against like this, then they should stop discriminating against everyone else.
Until then, fuck 'em.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 7, 2022 6:08 PM |
R8, a good religion-based defense is that conservative "Christians" do not adhere to the actual teachings of Jesus Christ: charity, love, all the Beatitudes. For example, see below.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 7, 2022 6:13 PM |
R4 6, or at least 5 of them, would say that it is unlawful discrimination on the basis of religion, just like not allowing religious people to discriminate according to their faith is ALSO unlawful discrimination on the basis of religion.
And if you don't think they'd pull such a shameless stunt, you haven't been paying attention.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 7, 2022 6:17 PM |

[quote]Discrimination against gays is explained by claims of religious freedom. What religious beliefs could the restaurant owners cite which would stand up in court?
Christianity. They don't let in groups that dont love their neighbors
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 7, 2022 7:43 PM |
The absolute BEST part about this is that you can even still claim to be a Christian and deny service to fundie nutbags due to "religious beliefs."
I can't wait until the diehard catholics turn on protestants and evangelicals. I mean, they do remember, you know, the past 400 years, don't they.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 7, 2022 8:38 PM |
Hoist on your own petard
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 7, 2022 8:46 PM |
Don't they have a Cracker Barrel around?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 7, 2022 9:12 PM |
The Family Foundation will just scream "INCIVILITY!" and encourage MAGA freaks to picket and threaten them, like Sarah Sanders did after she got kicked out of the Red Hen.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 7, 2022 9:16 PM |
Omg! What if the Dress Barn refuses to serve them next?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 7, 2022 9:19 PM |
R20 The Catholic church in the USA has been evangelized over the past century. Depending on your Parish, they are almost indistinguishable from fundies. There is, however, a particular strain of young "trad Caths" that eschew fundamentalism, but they also hate the current Pope. It is a lose-lose situation.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 7, 2022 9:22 PM |
R25- Religion should be have to be practiced in the privacy of ones home. It should be publicly banned.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 7, 2022 9:55 PM |
Bravo! How do you like it, fundie freaks?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 7, 2022 9:57 PM |
No soup for you!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 7, 2022 10:41 PM |
[quote]it is unlawful discrimination on the basis of religion
The discrimination described is not on the basis of religion but of their stance on issues such as LGBT rights and abortion. The test is whether or not the restaurant serves Christians in general (which they obviously do). There are no protections in the Constitution for discrimination based on political stances, even those espoused by the Family Foundation.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 8, 2022 12:28 AM |
R8---The religion of "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone."
No need to explain or give a reason, just say, "We decline to serve you. Please leave and eat elsewhere."
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 8, 2022 11:59 AM |
[quote]Discrimination against gays is explained by claims of religious freedom. What religious beliefs could the restaurant owners cite which would stand up in court?
The Supreme Court defines it as a “strongly held belief.” We strongly believe these people are a bunch of hypocrites and, therefore, refuse to serve them.
NEXT!

But, but, only them there homersexshuls shouldn’t be allowed in. Not us, silly. We’s the good folk, darlin’.
This ain’t no sort of right.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 8, 2022 12:08 PM |
R4, Unfortunately Scotus might rule against this because the restaurant doesn't have a religious standing. I wish we would just be like England and completely remove church from state, and stop giving religion special rights. This whole debacle has a slippery slope of establishments discriminating against types of people or ethnic groups, especially if they over turn the Civil rights act.

From R35's article:
[quote]After the cancellation, Cobb said the group was able to find another restaurant "who provided their service to us and whose waiter probably didn't mind getting a nice tip from us."
Riiiight. People like this are very well known as great tippers. Amirite, DL waitstaff veterans?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 8, 2022 5:37 PM |
"Nice tip" = three pennies and a card advertising a fake "pregnancy crisis center."
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 8, 2022 5:38 PM |
So everyone MUST serve Christians but Christians don't have to serve those it doesn't want to.
Ok
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 8, 2022 5:47 PM |
This group was not served because it's a hate-filled lobbying group that works to stop rights for LGBT. There's nothing Christian about this group at all.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 8, 2022 5:48 PM |
The Supreme Court is basing its decisions on freedom of expression not freedom of religion. It is arguing that no one can be compelled to produce artistic expressions. Regardless of what your opinion is of that the court has not allowed discrimination in public accommodations. This is very unlikely to occur given the segregation issues and the roles discrimination in restaurants, stores etc played out. One cannot for instance say I have religious objections to serving Black people. This case is clearly unconstitutional and illegal in a way the bakery cases are not. Sorry bitchez. And you don’t want this behavior permitted because it will be used against you.

[quote] The Supreme Court is basing its decisions on freedom of expression not freedom of religion. It is arguing that no one can be compelled to produce artistic expressions.
NO one preventing her from producing her "artistic expressions" (a.k.a, a website). It's when she wants to sell them, she has to follow the marketplace rules.

In Colorado law, it is forbidden to discriminate against LGBT. So SCOTUS will basically say that state laws on discrimination hold no water.

R44, what part of the quoted statement is remotely incorrect?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 8, 2022 7:49 PM |
If the restaurant serves other Christian groups but not this one, it's not being discriminated against because of its Christianity.

Cracker Barrel cut that shit out years ago when a NY retirement fund became a major shareholder. Looks like they'll have to settle for Chick-fil-A or the concessions stand at a Regal Theater!

“Business owners should be allowed to operate their business according to their conscience. Employees shouldn’t fear losing their job for not denying their conscience.”
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 8, 2022 10:23 PM |
[Italic]The article describes the Family Foundation as "a Christian group" being denied service - as if the restaurant turned away a bunch of church grandmas.
This a powerful, well-funded conservative org that WRITES LEGISLATION to allow business to refuse service to LGBTQ people
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 9, 2022 12:31 AM |

R43 no they are saying specific elements of state laws which compel artistic creation are unconstitutional under the First Amendment's freedom of speech clause. Freedom of speech means also freedom not to speak (or express oneself in other ways.)
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 9, 2022 12:51 AM |
Oh, dear goodness, r16! I've quoted Christ's Beatitudes and His Sermon on the Mount only to be told I'm a Jesuit Cultists by Dr.Phil, as he calls "himself." He believes himself to be a "truth arbirter" despite being an abject moron.

Foodways are an artistic expression and depending on how well it's cooked it may be a religious experience.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 10, 2022 7:01 PM |

R29 Gets it why this is a nothingburger. The restaurant serves Christians; they reserve the right to deny service to people who may affect their patrons, or especially employees.
