by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 6, 2022 1:32 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 6, 2022 1:35 AM |
“Moffitt Cancer Center”… so Scientologists are allowed to seek treatment? I thought that went against everything.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 6, 2022 1:35 AM |
R34 Pancreatic, glioblastoma, or she ignored the signs of another cancer for too long.

[quote]71 is not a bad age to die frankly.
Considering how overweight she became she's pretty lucky she made it that long. Her quality of life would've been miserable for the rest of her 70s, failing joints, heart issues, potential for strokes, diabetes if she didn't already have it
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 6, 2022 1:36 AM |

I thought she was gorgeous when she was younger with long hair. As she got older not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 6, 2022 1:41 AM |
I liked her back before she went nuts and mean. She seemed to have sense of humor back then. I particularly liked her in Look Who's Talking and Madhouse,
by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 6, 2022 1:41 AM |
Why are so many people shocked? She was elderly and she was grossly obese and had been in poor health for decades.

Why, R59… she can’t hear us, now.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 6, 2022 1:43 AM |

I'm going to turn my flameless candle on for her tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 6, 2022 1:44 AM |
r57 I guess people don't realize how old they've gotten are and how old these celebrities are. No one is living forever, make the best of everyday! Cheers is itself is 40 years old.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 6, 2022 1:45 AM |
[quote]she was grossly obese
Oh for fucks sake. She was overweight. She wasn't 500 pounds.
I got news for you. 90 lbs is not an average weight. You bitches would think Audrey Hepburn was plump.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 6, 2022 1:45 AM |
Fat Actress should be a DL classic if it isn’t already.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | December 6, 2022 1:46 AM |
She was great on Cheers, she certainly understood comedy. And had an exotic beauty, with that amazing, Betty Bacall deep voice. She should have been a bigger star. Unfortunately, coke and crazy got a hold of her. RIP you crazy bitch. What a horrible fall.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 6, 2022 1:48 AM |
I always thought she looked much younger than her age without plastic surgery (or obvious PS). Everyone else from Cheers is still alive, except obviously Coach. I never expected KA to be the first to die from its cast.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 6, 2022 1:48 AM |
She must've thought it could never happen to her, but unfortunately anyone can get cancer at any time. It's like a shitty Wheel of Misfortune.

by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 6, 2022 1:50 AM |
I thought she was so pretty in her Match Game appearance in 1979 (as did Gene Rayburn). Her hair and eyes were beautiful.
Chris pine’s dad Robert is featured in this clip, too.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 6, 2022 1:51 AM |
She was gorgeous when young, and an unhinged psycho on Twitter. When she won an Emmy, she thanked then-husband Frank Hardy, er I mean Parker Stevenson, for giving her "the big one." Travolta brought her into the Scientology fold, and apparently it agreed with her. Probably loved bossing around Sea Org.
She gained a ton of weight, then lost it, then gained it all back with more to spare. After Cheers, she starred on a sitcom that was successful enough to last four seasons, but is virtually forgotten today. I would tell you which one, but I've forgotten it.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | December 6, 2022 1:51 AM |
She was cray-zee.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | December 6, 2022 1:52 AM |
71 is actually young to die these days. This isn’t 1950. People live much longer now.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | December 6, 2022 1:52 AM |
My sister and watched the Look Who's Talking films obsessively as a child (looking back, they were NOT appropriate for our age group.. I think our mum just thought, "Oh, they're watching cute films about talking babies" and left us to it). Kirstie was fantastic in those films. I'm surprised she wasn't a bigger star.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | December 6, 2022 1:53 AM |

R77 Veronica’s Closet? It was a big hit then fizzled by season 3.
She made millions off of that shown
by Anonymous | reply 82 | December 6, 2022 1:54 AM |

I disliked her as a person because of the Scieno crap. But, she was very good comedic performer and Drop Dead Gorgeous is one of my favorite black comedy movies.

Nice try at reducing supporting fascism to "voting history." She was a Trump supporter and a Scientologist. So, twice the crazy. That doesn't mean I was wishing her dead.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | December 6, 2022 2:21 AM |
I remember when she first came onto the scene. Memory serving, she played Virgilia in the 1983/84? mini series North and South as a northern abolitionist who marries a character being played by George Stanford Brown, maybe? Patrick Swayze as Orry Main??? Liz Taylor played a ho house Madam. It's streaming free somewhere. Tubi, maybe.
Anyway, I liked her work. She's transitioned over now.

She demonized democrats on her Twitter. It would be very hypocritical and disingenuous of me to say I liked her and thought she was a good person. I didn't like her because I think people like her are destroying our country by voting in fascist people who tried to overthrow our democracy and they are still trying. I did not wish her dead, however.

138 lbs for a 5'7" woman is not huge at all.
118.1 lbs - 159.6 lbs is considered normal weight for 5'7".
So many Hollywood actresses were/are put through the ringer about their weight. That's why we have the Anya Taylor-Joys who go to the other extreme.

Is Scientology a religion? They somehow hit the jackpot and scored tax status as a church. That's why they lie low on lawsuits. They don't want their tax-exempt status fucked with.

[quote]She seemed to be a very gullible women and I suspect it was easy for the cult to gaslight her.
She left her home town in Kansas very specifically to join Scientology. This was in the 1970s, when they were recruiting a lot of disaffected teens and young people. She may have been easy to convince, but this was a woman who had exposure to a lot of non-Scientology opinions, facts, and news over the years, and chose to ignore it.
Scientology got her the game show gigs and some of her first acting jobs, and she always seemed grateful.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | December 6, 2022 4:09 AM |
R200 them calling it a church doesn’t make it a religion. It’s never been classified as anything more than a “belief”. It isn’t recognized as a religion anywhere in the world.

[quote]I'll never forgive her for joining Scientology. She said it stopped her coke addiction.
Well, if she was saying she joined the Clams after she became an actress, she was lying. She was a member of one of the small regional Scieno outposts in Wichita back in the very early 1970s when she was in college. They made enough money in Wichita that in the mid 1990s they opened a huge temple (or whatever they call it) and Kirstie came out to celebrate the opening.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | December 6, 2022 4:20 AM |
r207, only certain specific entities within the church are tax exempt. It gives the Clams overall tax exemption, for the most part, but technically it's only smaller sub-entities within the church that have individual tax exemptions. I think it's something like 150 entities.
What happened is that they lost their original tax-exempt status from the IRS, then sued for decades. For some reason the Bush I administration started negotiations with them, which lasted until the Clinton administration, where they ended up paying some back taxes and the IRS in return gave these smaller entities within the church tax-exempt status. Everything was sealed by the IRS until someone leaked it all in the late 1990s.
Those little entities are the "churches" in the eyes of the IRS, while the overall Clam org is not. It's a loophole in their favor.

Weren't they harassing, terrorizing, and possibly blackmailing specific personnel within the IRS to get the outcome they desired? That's the version I've read or heard in various Scientology exposés. They went as far as killing people's pets.
As far as Alley goes, I realize that when someone dies, no matter how awful they were for decades, we're supposed to say something like "I may not have agreed with (blah, blah), but (something good). Rest in peace." Alley's acting career long ago became a precursor to her bullying on behalf of the abusive cult to which she had yoked herself, and then her MAGA/antivax trolling. Having never even enjoyed her displays of manic, sloppy desperation on Cheers, where I preferred Shelley Long, I don't even have many happy memories of her acting to provide balanc. So I can't squeeze out a single perfect tear.

My parents' friend actually owned the house that was used as the residence for the Leeman house in DDG and met all the actors on set, including KA. My parents, at the time big fans, were excited to hear stories about her but were told that she was very crabby on the day of filming (the rumor is that Alley was a real shrew and generally uncooperative on the entire production of DDG, so it's not entirely surprising) and would only make the smallest of chit chat to come across as polite. She apparently stained their carpeting too. I don't know if the guy still lives in the house but I remember he had a framed photo on the wall of the stain. He did say the gal playing Rebecca, Alley's on-screen daughter (I can't remember her name now) was beautiful and extremely charming and kind. Regardless, she really was a gorgeous woman in her day (those old photos above!), but she definitely had a screw loose that was well-loosened back in the 90s. Alley said that unlike several other Cheers stars, she would never guest-star on Frasier because it had two psychiatrists as the main characters, and Scientologists consider psychiatrists to be akin to the architects of the Holocaust. She was willing to do Cheers, because Frasier was just a supporting character there (and, I suspect, because her career needed the boost in 1987), but she would never do Frasier.

Tough to get around her political views and religion. On the plus side, Kirstie was for gay marriage and gave us many great hours of entertainment. She was a talented, comedic actress. Her kids seem to have loved her. That says something about her.
Anyone remember how pretty she was in Star Trek? She had unique looks. Sadly, lost both parents in an automobile accident after she started her acting career.

But she had the ULTIMATE training to evade cancer! As Scientology told her and probably kept her from getting life-saving treatments. Scientology kills and we're upon a near three decade death of the innocent, Lisa McPherson, caught up in the cult and paid with her life.
[QUOTE]In 2018, we reported that one of Scientology’s own publications had revealed that Alley had reached the ultimate auditing level on the “Bridge to Total Freedom,” which is known as Operating Thetan Level Eight, or “OT 8.” The magazine included this quote from the actress about attaining a level that gave her power over “matter, energy, space, and time.”
[QUOTE]Now here I stand a New OT VIII shiny, fresh and calm… well, as calm as a thetan like me can be. I am more confident than ever before. And here’s the big news. I now fully have the confront that puts me right up that damn confront scale with other Scientology Freedom Fighters!

That's very likely, r236. Back in the days of Usenet in the mid 1990s, I was on a Scientology expose newsgroup and two people had their pets killed for what they had publicly revealed.
Also, the Clams had a bunch of members infiltrate US government jobs in the 1970s via Operation Snow White and Operation Cat, and probably others. They planted false documents and also purged documents about the Scienos being a scam.

Hopefully Kirstie didn't die in blackface like her mother. (That comment has probably already been made, but she mentions it and laughs in the Baba Wawa interview below.) She also had a framed B&W pic of another woman on her bedroom dresser...Baba asked if it was her mum, and Kirstie--who demanded to do the interview with Baba in her bedroom--said it was the pic that came with the frame and the woman looked sweet." RIP, Cray-Cray Kirstie.

[quote]Would we even know the names Tom Cruise or Elizabeth Moss, if it weren't for the cult's involvement in their careers.
Cruise's, for sure. He was brought into the fold by his first wife, second-generation Scientologist Mimi Rogers (who has since severed ties with the cult; Miscavige reportedly always disliked her). Cruise and Rogers didn't begin dating until 1985. By then, he already had had supporting parts in films directed by Zeffirelli, Coppola, and Ridley Scott, besides his star-making film Risky Business. I don't know whether he had signed for Top Gun (released in 1986) yet, but he was already one of the young Hollywood stars.

R283, do you remember when their lawyer tried to literally erase the Scientology newsgroup with a cancel (rmgroup) Unix command? Back then pulling that kind of shit was grounds for getting booted from your internet provider.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | December 6, 2022 9:16 AM |
I do, r291! It was up to individual Usenet providers as to whether they accepted commands like that or not, but they usually didn't because bad actors were forever trying rmgroup commands, or to cancel comments they didn't like.
What was funny about that was the Scienos were saying they hadn't been trying to take the group down at all, then an attorney does that and they weren't able to deny it any longer.

It was another one of those situations where they took great writing and the performer more than brought it to life. The Rebecca pivot was probably one of the most successful - and original - character replacements in TV. She was a stark contrast when the character first arrived, but when they realized how well Alley could play calamitous loser, the part really took off and I think it re-energized the show and gave it an even longer run than it might have enjoyed otherwise. At a minimum it wasn't "the show never really recovered from the loss of Shelley Long."

I was 10 when that movie came out and I saw it in the theaters. I remember some reviews of it years later when I was a teenager or college student where it was called a Parent Trap rip off, but I thought it was more The Parent Trap meets Prince and the Pauper type scenario. The FACT of things is that when $cientology's religious status was under review/scrutiny by the Feds and IRS, the cult blasted the government with so many lawsuits that the IRS et al. finally had to let the matter go. They didn't have the resources or will to combat what was the equivalent of a litigational drone attack so massive it was choking the court system.
THAT'S the kind of religion the $cios are. And that's the kind of rotten cult that Kirstie Allie plugged herself into, as she nastily "defended" "her church" as if it wasn't the pyramid scheme and demented, corrupt, inhuman and false construct of lazy babble that it is.
Of COURSE all religions are based on the irrational, unhistorical, unprovable and false. Resurrections, deities, divine intervention, miracles and the rest. All of them. This is not debatable. One has to ask what else do they have, to deserve believers.
$cientology has nothing. Neither does Mormonism. I have never met a member of either who was thoroughly, even irrevocably damaged by their cults. THAT'S WHAT CULTS DO - control, control, control, and using people to serve a few at the top.

[quote]I don't think disagreeing with people politically is terrifying.
If a person's "political beliefs" include equating homosexuality with pedophilia and continuing to support a President who tried to overthrow the U.S. government, then I think it's truly terrifying -- to say the least -- when that person's "political beliefs" are downplayed or forgotten in the wake of their death.
[quote]I don't think Scientology is any worse than Christianity or any other religion or cult or whatever you want to call it.
I'm strongly against all organized religion, but Scientology is demonstrably far worse than any other religion I know of in several horrible ways, including (1) the way that it keeps the basic tenets of its beliefs (something about how human beings are contaminated by the souls of dead aliens) secret to most of its adherents, and only gradually reveals those tenets to people who give them more and more money; and (2) the way in which it strong-arms its adherents to remove from their lives any friends, family members, or other loved ones who are not adherents.
I can't believe you or anyone else doesn't understand this -- and that, too, is terrifying in my opinion.

As a Scientologist, she most likely didn't go for colonoscopies every few years, which could have early-detected the problem. Such a ridiculous way of living life (IMO).
In 1995, Liz Montgomery also died of colon cancer weeks after getting the diagnosis at age 62. She was not a Sciento , she had an irrational fear of doctors and doctor's offices - which is why she had never gone for colonoscopies, even though she had 'beaten' cancer in her mid-50s.

He "only" got a lump sum payment of 6 mil. HA-HA!
Alley's 1997 divorce from ex-husband Parker Stevenson became fodder for the tabloids when Stevenson sued for spousal support.
Alley was at the height of her career playing Ted Danson's love interest on "Cheers," when she split from her husband of 14 years, Stevenson of "Hardy Boys" and "Baywatch" fame.
In documents that leaked to the press, Stevenson detailed their lavish lifestyle, which included multiple residences with full-time staffs of housekeepers, chefs and nannies; exotic animals for pets, children's birthday parties with marching bands and lavish gifts of Ferraris and sailboats.
In one filing, Stevenson asked for "sufficient support" to "maintain a lifestyle commensurate to that which Kirstie and I had enjoyed during our marriage," including $18,000 a month to pay rent on a home in Bel Air.
Though Stevenson had once enjoyed the spotlight, he claimed that his earnings were only a fraction of what Alley earned and he did not expect to ever approach her income.
Ultimately, he settled for a one-time payout of $6 million, according to Forbes.com.

At R448, that's a very interesting document. I don't blame Parker Stevenson for wanting his share in the divorce. I envy the money, but not the lifestyle; it sounded exhausting. Looks like she really spoiled her children with gifts (miniature car & miniature replica boat).
Somebody upthread said the son looked trashy and I'm sorry but he does. All that money to look like this?
I didn't realize that KA made that much money, but it looks like she was also hemorrhaging money with her lifestyle. (Multiple residences with staff, exotic animals, etc.) I'm not surprised she ended up in ... Florida.

She had bought two acres of waterfront property and was developing her "dream house," she already owned another home in Clearwater, and she had unloaded the Los Angeles place for nearly 8 million. I don't think she chose Florida because she was in straitened financial conditions. I think she chose it because, having whined herself out about not getting acting roles anymore (for whatever reasons: too old, too fat, too MAGA, too antivax), she accepted there was no need for her to be in Los Angeles anymore. Proximity to studios and friends within the entertainment business wasn't exactly a factor. No one was casting her, and she had burned a lot of bridges.
She concluded it was better to be spend the rest of her days among own kind, and there was nowhere better for that than the town Miscavige and Co. have thoroughly taken over.

Ashamedly, I watched the entire season of 'Celebrity Big Brother' that she was on in the UK (maybe in 2019?). She was a last-minute replacement for Stormie Daniel's, and they had done up the poolhouse in a White House theme specifically for Stormie. So the correlation was supposed to be that Trumpster Kirstie took her place...a far stretch, but Kirstie was actually a lot of fun on the show and never talked politics unless one of the other housemates asked her. (And even then, she kept it brief with no rants.) Makes me wonder if she just enjoyed sitting behind the keyboard or phone and ranting. She couldn't do that in the CBB house, obviously.

Radar Online has an article up that makes it sound like she alienated just about everyone in the last few years and was really communicating with a few hired staff.
"Kirstie Alley was a shell of her former self in the final years before she died at the age of 71, RadarOnline.com has learned.
In 2020, sources revealed the former Cheers star’s behavior had gotten “goofier” with Alley picking fights and bickering about everything from world events to who ate the last cupcake.
“She’s constantly bent out of shape, letting everything upset her, and making calls at all hours to complain about the people who’ve wronged her, real or imagined,” said a source.
The actress became more of a reclusive, sources spilled. “She has a housekeeper and a gardener who she communicates with — but other than that she doesn’t see much of anyone anymore,” said the source.
“The fear is she’s having a midlife meltdown brought on by loneliness and seclusion,” an insider revealed. The source added Kirstie “had a group of young hangers-on who would visit her, but even they’ve drifted away because of her” behavior changes."

I think it's very interesting to find out that David Miscabbage hated Alley's guts. I wonder if it's because she had a rep for being a ballsy bitch. I picture her as not being in such awe of him as so many others are/were. She seemed the type to tell him "I want to be a part of your religion, but I'm not going to be anyone's bitch".
by Anonymous | reply 470 | December 7, 2022 3:17 PM |
Kirstie stated on Twitter in the past that her family has no history of cancer whatsoever and she also ate organic because she didn't trust the chemicals and additives put in our food. Combine that with all the Scientology shit and she probably thought she was safe from cancer and there was no need to get a colonoscopy. Sadly she was wrong.
I hear colon cancer rates are rising significantly lately and people are getting it younger and younger. So you cannot afford to be complacent.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | December 7, 2022 4:14 PM |
[430] Nothing has ever been mentioned about Chadwick's illness, how long he was battling colon cancer, if he was screened, etc. So I really couldn't answer that. One thing I do know is that when he died, he was in his mid-40s, and at that time the health department was still saying screening should start when you're 50 (only recently - this summer - have they changed that to 45). So it very well could be he was following the guidelines and never got screened, thinking he was 'too young' still. Just my thought.
[R433] I'm not certain what cancer she had in the 80s, but her husband Robert Foxworth mentioned it in an iterview he gave about his career, maybe ten years ago. He said that he left FALCON CREST in the spring of 1987, when Montgomery was diagnosed with cancer - and he wanted to stay home and take care of her. (At the time he left, he said he was leaving to take a break for 'personal reasons' but never elabortated).
As a matter of fact, there was talk of Montgomery joining the night time soap at the end of the sixth season, and become a regular in the seventh season (Fall 1987). Those plans fell through because of her diagnosis, and then Foxworth left the show at the end of the sixth. Montgomery finally returned to work around 1989-90 making television movies, once again. Whatever cancer she beat in 1987-89 seemed to have returned and metastasized in her colon. Very sad.

Does anyone who follows Scientology celebrity news remember a story within the last decade about Alley having a relapse on alcohol and being forced to apologize to other Scientologists in a humiliating ritual? I can't seem to find it now with keyword searches. She had to get 100 forgiveness signatures (or something ridiculous like that) to remain in good standing, and she was in some public place where members socialize, groveling to one and then the next.
If that's accurate, I don't think ballsiness was at the root of Miscavige's dislike for her. He doesn't seem to like women generally, even those in Scientology: Mrs. Hubbard, Mimi Rogers, Kirstie Alley, his own wife. But I'm not altogether sure he likes many men either. Being in his good graces seems to be a fleeting state.

How exactly Scientology gained IRS religious exemption is a long and convoluted matter.
Suffice to say part of it doesn't make sense, that is why IRS suddenly reversed course and in end granted Scientology benefits above and beyond any other "religion". So much time has passed since this all went down most agree it is far too late now for any legal challenges or otherwise try to reverse.

Don't know if it has to do with that crack pot religion or what; but it is common nowadays for cremation to occur same day or next after death.
Increasingly people or their surviving families/friends are skipping whole wake, funeral, then interment or cremation. Just cremation (or interment) ASAP, with some sort of celebration of life memorial later on.
Leslie Jordan's remains were cremated not long after being released to family from ME's office IIRC. Ashes were then subsequently scattered at sea.

by Anonymous | reply 493 | December 7, 2022 5:57 PM |
A quite sensible and reasonable law. Cremation essentially would destroy any evidence of a death that occurred via foul play. Waiting at least 48 hours does give ME's office or anyone else a chance to examine a body before it is destroyed.
Autopsies are not performed as much nowadays, especially when there is no reason to suspect death was due to foul play.

Leah Remini says Scientologists are taught not to go to doctors.
Actress and former Scientologist Leah Remini, who had a very public fallout with Alley after railing against the church, told Rolling Stone Tuesday: “While it has been reported that Kirstie sought conventional cancer treatment, which gave her a fighting chance, the majority of Scientologists do not seek treatment until it’s too late.
“Scientologists are convinced they can cure themselves of diseases like cancer. It’s one of the more sinister things they promise. And because Scientology claims to be an exact science, not a faith, its members are brainwashed into believing these false claims as guarantees.”

My thoughts on Kirsty Alley? She was a good actress. She was at one time bery beautiful. But she got fat and crazy, a crazy Scientologist. Then she became just another nutty celebrity.

I really don't think she had as much money as people think. I don't think she saved, she didn't invest. She was living like a frau version of a rock star (read Parker Stevenson's divorce declaration, upthread).
She did the Jenny Craig thing, was on a reality show. Who does that just for fun? She needed the damn money.
Someone upthread said that Clearwater Florida is Scientology Central, but who really wants to live there, out of everywhere in the US? Her money was stretching far in Florida.

[quote]Agnes Moorehead was one of several cast members of "The Conquerer," along with John Wayne and Susan Hayward, to die of cancer. The movie's locations included nuclear fallout testing sites. Of the 220 film crew members, 91 (comprising 41 percent of the crew) developed cancer during their lifetime, and 46 (or 21 percent) died from it.
I had family members who lived in Eastern Nevada who were affected by this and ended up receiving cash settlements from the government. One of my aunts (by marriage) died of cancer in her 30s leaving my uncle with three young boys.

Even if she would have lived to be 100, she was probably sitting on $15-20 million as life savings which would have gotten her though. I think what some people tend to forget is that entertainers like to entertain and even if they are sitting on a nice nest egg, no one wants to turn down a possible secondary revenue stream for, as my grandma used to say, pin money. She probably developed a whole new fanbase with Trumpers and just decided to cash in with Cameo. It's easy money. Is Jennifer Aniston doing cameos? Probably not. But will Jennifer Aniston do cameos one day? Maybe. Cameo is just another way to engage with fans and monetize it.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, here, but $15-20 million doesn't sound like that much if you compare it to how she was living.
We had a thread on DL about KA showing up at her daughter's afternoon tea party. It was on either Instagram or Twitter and the party looked super basic, IMO. I'm not saying that KA needed to fund her daughter's lifestyle, but she did lavish them with gifts as children.

She was great in so many things but too bad she didn’t believe in traditional medicine. Also, WOW, they really lived large and bordering on tacky.

How could you possibly know that? What the hell information do you have about her savings, her investments, her lifestyle, etc. to say she was "probably" sitting on that Much? MAYBE she was, but it's also highly possible that she was worth far less.

No, I can't possibly know her exactly worth, but you can make some guestimates based on her real estate alone. The only point I was trying to make is that some people think doing Cameo is like one level away from hooking. It's just another way to make some extra cash. Entertainers don't want to stop entertaining and just because people have money, doesn't mean they don't want more of it.

What the document at R448 describes is truly insane. I get that she was doing well at the time but, holy smokes, she was hemorrhaging money. Assuming she kept up that lifestyle at even half the speed she was going in the 90s, I find it hard to believe she had a healthy estate at her death. Equally ridiculous is her husband's plea to continue living that lifestyle.

" Equally ridiculous is her husband's plea to continue living that lifestyle."
In many if not most states soon to be divorced spouse is entitled to continue living in manner to which they have become accustomed. In past alimony (now often called maintenance) was awarded to wives in aid of that goal. Nowadays with equality and all divorced husbands have same sort of expectations.
In fact latter isn't exactly new. Barbara Hutton's divorced husbands all received generous settlements. Only one not to take a dime from her was Cary Grant.

Many, many wealthy people live rather simple and ordinary lives. You'd never know how wealthy they really are (I know a number of people like this). I think KA lived like this.
On the flip side, there are many 'poorer' and 'less wealthy' people who are living paycheck to paycheck, living rather luxurious, ostentatious lives trying to impress others. I think we all know people like this.

That document at R448 was, largely, legal posturing and negotiation. There was no way Parker Stevenson was going to live the same lifestyle after the divorce and I think he knew it. One thing missing from that document was all the things he did to support KA's career while they were married. E.g., I took care of the kids' day-to-day needs; I turned down roles so that KA could work (while I took care of kids).

[quote]Interesting that Alley is playing a therapist in "Deconstructing Harry" and Scientologists are so against therapists/psychiatry.
Some detail on that from a 1997 USA Today article: "Alley had a more emotional motive for appearing as Woody Allen’s jilted psychiatrist wife in Deconstructing Harry. ‘I don’t like psychiatry,’ Alley says. ‘And I don’t believe it works. And I believe psychiatrists are neurotic or psychotic, for the most part. I wanted to play her that way, and Woody just totally let me do it. I said, ‘I want to be taking Prozac or drugs during the session with her patient.’ I wanted to show that this woman is so twerked out that she has to take drugs, too. She takes her own medicine."
I remember reading that at the time and thinking Alley didn't have a good grasp of how Prozac works. It's not something you take and feel an immediate effect from, like Alley's recreational drugs of choice. No surprise that that idea came from her rather than Allen. It's possible that "Prozac" was entirely her assumption, and Allen had Xanax or similar in mind.
Her "emotional motive" was a load. I'm sure she appeared in the film because Allen was at that time Oscar bait for women. In the previous five years, he had directed Mira Sorvino and Dianne Wiest (for the second time) to Supporting Actress wins, Judy Davis and Meg Tilly to nominations, and Samantha Morton would follow shortly. Indeed, Alley was buzzed about in 1997-98 as Deconstructing Harry's likeliest candidate for an acting nomination, but the film ended up being recognized only for the screenplay.
I know the Oscars are no more than what they are, but I'm glad I never had to see Alley described as "Academy Award nominee"...or even worse, "winner." But Allen is usually a good director of actors, in the sense that he knows when to stay out of the way and when to tell someone to give more or less, so it's one of her better performances.

I don't think KA's acting is so great in that Deconstructing Harry scene. She's so much larger than him and she's not playing "small." It looks like she was holding back on getting crazy and dramatic. She just found out that Woody fucked one of her patients - a 26-year-old woman. I think KA underplayed the role, actually, and not in a good way. You know she's capable of going truly nuts.
Then, when she tries to choke him (Woody), she's still holding back. Her character looks like she could kick Woody's ass, no problem.
Woody Allen just takes me out of a movie, anyway. How he's always supposed to be getting young pussy all over the place.

R554 no no no that scene is too good and I’m not any kind of major Kirstie Alley fan but she was so fucking good in that. And so is Woody, btw - it was his last great movie.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | December 9, 2022 6:06 AM |
Alley would sacrifice her "principles" for self-interest. She was in Scientology and anti-psychiatry from 1979. but she was willing to be on Cheers despite the presence of psychiatrist characters. She could rationalize it by saying Frasier and Lilith were just supporting characters. If they had told her her first storyline would be going to see Frasier as a psychiatrist and benefiting from it and falling in love with him, she still would have done it, I'm sure. She wasn't going to turn down being the female lead on one of the top-rated shows.
Then she was willing to play a psychiatrist in Deconstructing Harry, according to her because it was a negative portrayal. But it surely didn't hurt that it was a Woody Allen film with a star-filled cast, at a time Allen's films were likely to win movie awards.
She preemptively nixed Frasier because at that time, what did it offer her that she didn't already have? Her career was going well, and her own lousy sitcom was either in development or already airing. So she could look as though she was taking a stand on her deeply held beliefs.
