[quote] Why didn't they stay around longer?

[quote] Why did the duo break up so soon?

According to wikipedia:

[quote] Reflecting in 2008 on the group's split, both Moyet and Clarke agreed that a lack of communication between the pair had been a major reason for the breakdown of the partnership. Moyet recalled that Clarke "was creatively very encouraging, very open to hearing my ideas for songs. The thing I found difficult was the lack of warmth. I wanted to feel more likeable, and you can't feel likeable if someone doesn't want to interact with you." Clarke admitted that "I lacked the life-skills of communication in a relationship. I felt confident in the studio, but starting a chat with somebody ..."[6] He put it down to the fact that because the duo became popular so rapidly, there had never been any time to build up a personal relationship between them:

[quote] "It all happened very fast and because we hadn't been in a band for years, playing in clubs, it was very much just a working relationship—we never had the chance to bond. We never really knew each other. Not really ... The fact that we never talked, never socialised together, meant that when problems came up we didn't know how to communicate and sort things out."

[quote] Moyet added that their differing personalities had not helped matters, saying, "He was, I think, sad at the time after leaving Depeche and remote, a bit angry, but it was all internalised. Whereas I was this disaffected, slightly aggressive ex-punk rocker where nothing was internalised. I was probably quite difficult to be around."[8]

R8 called it.

by Anonymousreply 14November 26, 2022 8:49 PM

R7 covered it well. I've read some pieces since and they've mended fences and had a great experience on the reunion tour - Vince still wanted/wants to focus on Erasure, but they both had a great tour.

They were really thrown in the deep end when they barely knew each other, but the music was perfection.

People have suggested a reunion but I feel like I do with the Sundays. Both bands released a few perfect albums and it's best to leave it where it is.

"Nobody's Diary" is the song I love the most. It was what their reunion tour shows started with and I stood, clapping, jumping, with tears pouring down my face. I'll remember that for the rest of my days.

by Anonymousreply 15November 26, 2022 8:53 PM

That chick is a man.

by Anonymousreply 16November 26, 2022 8:55 PM

Alison had some good solo singles, too.

by Anonymousreply 17November 26, 2022 9:57 PM

I still think synthpop with a soulful, multi-octave voice is the best music.

by Anonymousreply 18November 26, 2022 10:59 PM

"Vince still wanted/wants to focus on Erasure"

Why? They were done over 20 years ago. He should have gone back to a female collaborator.

Why did Vince Clarke leave Depeche Mode?

by Anonymousreply 21November 27, 2022 1:49 AM

The band at last struck gold with their third single 'Just Can't Get Enough' and were soon playing on Top of the Pops (1981). At this point Vince had decided to part ways with Depeche Mode as he felt that they were in favor of taking a different musical direction than the one he wanted to pursue.

by Anonymousreply 22November 27, 2022 2:03 AM

I remember reading or hearing that Alison Moyet's was averse to performing live. (I also remember the prickly relationship with Vince Clarke, but thought that her not wanting to tour was the main problem.)

That said, some iconic songs they put out!

Why didn't Alison Moyet ever become successful in the USA?

by Anonymousreply 25November 27, 2022 4:10 AM

She was a big girl. She didn't fit the aesthetic criteria of the American MTV in the mid-to-late 80s.

by Anonymousreply 26November 27, 2022 4:13 AM

R26 is right. And frankly the record company didn't have the slightest clue what to do with her.

by Anonymousreply 27November 27, 2022 4:19 AM

She was Adele, before anyone thought about there being a market for someone like Adele.

by Anonymousreply 28November 27, 2022 6:27 AM

Adele should do a cover album of Yazoo/Alf songs.

by Anonymousreply 29November 27, 2022 7:02 AM

The ONLY comparison between Alison and Adele is that they were both fat. But it's the thing everyone remembers and notices, because every single fucking comment on any of Alison's videos is "Adele this" and "Adele that." Fuck that bitch.

They otherwise sound nothing alike - though Adele wishes she had the richness of Alison's voice.

by Anonymousreply 30November 27, 2022 5:24 PM

Is Alison homophobic?

by Anonymousreply 38November 30, 2022 6:14 PM

Nobody has mentioned Only You? What’s wrong with this place? It’s one of the most beautiful songs of all time.

by Anonymousreply 39November 30, 2022 11:24 PM

What was their best song?

by Anonymousreply 40December 1, 2022 1:19 PM

Used to great effect in The Americans…poor Kimmy.

by Anonymousreply 41December 1, 2022 1:23 PM

Only You is their best song - a classic for the ages.

by Anonymousreply 42December 1, 2022 3:43 PM

How many official music videos did they have?

by Anonymousreply 43December 1, 2022 6:07 PM

I love Only You, but I also feel like it the song that is most likely to be chosen by a Frau as their best song.

Aside from the usual suspects (Situation, Don't Go, Only You) my favorites on Upstairs are Goodbye Seventies and Winter Kills - Bad Connection is fun, I Before E Except After C is a good listen, but only once in a while (though I love that Alison was stoned (supposedly) and reading from a manual for studio equipment while trying not to laugh. Alison has a great laugh - her laugh from Situation has been used in over 400 songs.) I love In My Room, but the ending trails on WAY too long - 1 minute 11 seconds of "But deliver us from evil over and over and over.

I didn't like You and Me both nearly as well, but love Ode to Boy and State Farm.

by Anonymousreply 44December 1, 2022 6:42 PM

Do they have any unreleased material?

by Anonymousreply 45December 2, 2022 1:37 AM

"Only You" is a great song but, in my mind, it was ruined by the fact that this was the inferior version that topped the UK charts for Christmas 1983.

by Anonymousreply 49December 2, 2022 7:11 PM

I saw Alison Moyet live in Philadelphia in the late ‘80’s after she had gone off in her own. All I remember was her “Thank YOOOOOUUUUUU!!!!!” when the crowd cheered after each of her songs.

I think she was on tour for Raindancing, which is a great album.

by Anonymousreply 54December 3, 2022 7:16 PM

R20, I love "Midnight." Robin S. did a great cover of it in the 90s. I wish they'd remix "Upstairs at Eric" to give it more musical variation and heft. Alf is held back by some of those dinky arrangements.

by Anonymousreply 56December 3, 2022 8:31 PM

Ugh, that Robin S version sounds hideous! Remixing it = pouring a thumpy club beat all over it that will make it sound like every other club song ever made.

by Anonymousreply 57December 3, 2022 8:34 PM

There’s a Robin S version? Maybe Beyoncé can steal it.

by Anonymousreply 58December 3, 2022 9:13 PM

Upstairs at Eric's had all the tracks that went on to be legendary, but to me, You and Me Both is a better album overall (Eric's has a few bits of obvious filler).

Alison's early solo career had her in the hands of producers who were trying to make her sound like others - both mismatches, especially Raindancing. It wasn't until Hoodoo where her sound really started to emerge. Hometime is a flawless solo record for Alison, as is The Minutes. Everything you might want from the same singer who fronted Yaz all those years ago.

by Anonymousreply 61December 4, 2022 3:30 AM

Who gives a fuck, R61?

by Anonymousreply 62December 4, 2022 3:34 AM

They were an interesting pairing considering they didn't really know each other. They never bonded, and the way she describes their dynamic sounds like Vince was possibly on the Aspergers spectrum. He was very anti-social and only interacted with Allison in the studio and had no interest in "grabbing a drink" at the local pub after work, which is paramount when you're collaborating creatively with someone.

Clearly, he was the mastermind, based on his resume and his impressive collaborations throughout his career. She floundered.

by Anonymousreply 63December 4, 2022 3:47 AM

I really don't care for Erasure much. I've liked a few of their songs, but I just don't like them as much as I like/liked Depeche Mode or Yaz.

It makes me laugh every time I hear Who Needs Love Like That? because the phrasing is so obviously Alison's. I don't know if that song was left over, or if it was written post Yaz, but it sounds as if either Alison sang the demo, or Andy was really trying to sound just like her.

by Anonymousreply 64December 4, 2022 3:50 AM

What are Yazoo must haves as far as music goes?

Is there something that has ALL of their songs on it?

Also, is there an online discography that has all of their work on it?

by Anonymousreply 70December 4, 2022 4:12 PM

She really did look like Adele.

by Anonymousreply 71December 4, 2022 4:20 PM

Why did the b-sides not end up on the 2 studio albums?

They were worthy of being on there.

by Anonymousreply 72December 4, 2022 7:11 PM

They had two albums, bitch. It's not hard to see their discography.

by Anonymousreply 73December 4, 2022 8:53 PM

What all songs did not make either studio album?

by Anonymousreply 74December 4, 2022 11:53 PM

Alison Moyet's solo stuff is well worth seeking out. In particular "The Minutes", her album from 2013, which was the return her electronic music roots.

by Anonymousreply 75December 4, 2022 11:56 PM

Situation, for one, R74. It was not on the original UK release, but was a B side on the Only You single. It received a 12 inch remix by François Kevorkian on the Only You 12 inch single, which was what was included on the US release of Upstairs at Eric.

It peaked at 73 on the US Singles Charts, and topped the US Dance Chart. Interestingly, it also hit number 31 on the Black singles chart in the US.

Here is the unremixed 7 inch version. It is very short

by Anonymousreply 76December 5, 2022 2:57 AM

BTW, here is Tuesday, the song that was left off the US release of Upstairs in favor of Situation.

It is a good song, and Alison's voice is powerful on it, but I think it would have made more sense as a B side with Situation on the album.

by Anonymousreply 77December 5, 2022 3:02 AM

State Farm should have been on a studio album too.

by Anonymousreply 78December 5, 2022 5:34 AM

In the US, "Situation" is the band's most well-known song, so I was surprised when I learned that in the UK it was a b-side and not included on the original LP. Similarly, Sire put "State Farm" on the 2nd LP in place of "Happy People" (the only song Clarke sang instead of Moyet, who refused it).

There was a box set called In Your Room that included both albums and all of the singles/b-sides/remixes, as well as a DVD with videos and TV appearances, but it's probably long out of print at this point.

by Anonymousreply 79December 5, 2022 6:30 AM

I saw Yaz in NYC in the 90s when they reformed. Her voice is stunning. She looks better now then in the best decade (80s, duh!) Her solo songs were gorgeous as well INVINCIBLE is so good even now.

by Anonymousreply 80December 5, 2022 6:51 AM

R80 it wasn't the 90s. When they split they were apart for decades. They reunited in 2008.

by Anonymousreply 81December 5, 2022 1:43 PM

Weird that so many differences happened between US and UK releases.

I loved British music of the 80s and 90s so much and it drove me MAD when they'd release a single in the UK but not here in the US. (It's still an utter shame that "Victims" by Culture Club was never released in the US.)

by Anonymousreply 82December 5, 2022 1:44 PM

R44 - that's Eric Radcliffe's mother reading from the manual on I Before E Except After C - she's credited with 'extra chit chat' on the album. But she does sound very similar to Alison's speaking voice.

R45 - the only non available song I'm aware of is Data Run. They did two theme songs for children's programmes, that was one and the other was Get Set For Summer. Get Set appeared on the download version of the live reunion album but Data Run has never been commercially released.

I wish they'd done a hell of a lot more, not least because it would have spared the world Erasure. Everything Vince Clarke did up until meeting Andy Bell was great. Andy must have sucked all the talent out of him. He's also one of the most pathetic lyricists to ever make a career in pop.

by Anonymousreply 83December 5, 2022 1:52 PM

Because their discography is so small they didn’t make many duff tracks. The non-album single The Other Side Of Love isn’t particularly good, but it is a rare co-write by both of them. I think the only other co-written tracks are Situation and State Farm.

by Anonymousreply 84December 5, 2022 1:55 PM

Alison has done a few Listening Party events for her own albums and for Upstairs at Erics, where she commented on each song. Fun.

by Anonymousreply 85December 5, 2022 1:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 86December 5, 2022 6:24 PM

I still listen to Upstairs At Eric's and You And Me Both, incredible albums. I wish they'd done more music together.

by Anonymousreply 87December 5, 2022 6:36 PM

Alison’s last two albums are brilliant. They’re both electronic. Arguably the best of her career.

by Anonymousreply 88December 5, 2022 7:54 PM

The Minutes is truly classic. Other is very good (though doesn't quite reach the heights of The Minutes).

Wondering if she'll ever record anything else. She's 61 now. She's said maybe not, but who knows. I'm still in shock that Everything But The Girl has something new coming.

by Anonymousreply 104December 6, 2022 9:53 PM

Madonna and “singer” do not belong in the same sentence. I love many Madonna songs, and memorized her entire debut album, but Alison Moyet could sing M off the stage. Madonna’s voice is weak, and comparable to Billie Eyelash’s whispering. There is absolutely zero comparison.

by Anonymousreply 105December 6, 2022 9:58 PM

The Minutes is an incredible album, and I think it is the best of her career. I don't think there are any bad songs on it, but really love the album closer, Rung By the Tide. Which is a song sung from the perspective of a church (monastery) bell at the bottom of the ocean.

Slip me into a simmering sea

I saw Yaz in NYC in maybe 2009 or so. The music was of course magnificent but they didn’t interact much on stage. Vince played, Alison sang, the audience had a great time, but it seemed like they barely even looked at each other. Could just be their performing style but I saw Alison at Irving Plaza about four years ago and she was fucking fabulous - she was having a lot of fun and she sang a mix of both Yaz and solo stuff. Her final song was Love Resurrection, which is one of my all-time favorites.

by Anonymousreply 108December 6, 2022 10:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 110December 7, 2022 7:14 AM

R109 - that's similar to Yazoo or in general?

Similar to Yazoo:

Early Eurythmics, Soft Cell, Blancmange, The Human League, Heaven 17, early Depeche Mode (obviously), Fad Gadget (some of his songs feature Alison on backing vocals on the Under The Flag album), Client, Goldfrapp, Mirrors, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Our Daughter's Wedding, Parralox (their first album Electricity has a song about Yazoo on it).

by Anonymousreply 111December 7, 2022 7:21 AM

Erasure - a few of their early songs really sound as if they were sung in Alison's phrasing

A little heard, unknown band called "Pet Shop Boys"

Moloko

My personal favorite was a band from the mid 2010s called The Diogenes Club. They had a very retro sound in some ways but were very fresh in others.

Why did the duo change their name by just two letters? Was it forced or did they want to?

by Anonymousreply 119December 8, 2022 11:52 PM

From Wikipedia:

According to Moyet, the name Yazoo was taken from the specialist blues record label Yazoo Records.[17] This decision led to a £3.5 million lawsuit threat by the label over the band's name[17] and, coupled with the fact that the name Yazoo was already in use by a lesser known American rock band, the group was renamed Yaz for the North American market.[4]

What day and time did they lay down the classic synth line in Situation. I know they recorded at night. Was it 11:30? 9:15? Surely someone on this site must know the exact date and time?

Also, what was Alison wearing when she sang Goodbye 70s?

And, what did Vince have for dinner before recording I Before I Except After C?

In addition, what was the weather like on the day they recorded In My Room.

Also, name every synth band active in the UK in 1981

I love Alison, but she really made some SHITTY videos for her solo songs.

R130 The record company made some very shitty videos.

And record companies did weird shit when they had a full figured singer, as if we'd all die if we saw them or something.

They covered Alf with a burka for Love Resurrection and had her in shadows on a few of her videos.

Same for Debora Iyall from Romeo Void. Look at "A Girl In Trouble" and watch the many ways they try to hide the fact that Debora is a big girl (including having some skinny bitch on screen more than Iyall is).

They also did that with Ann Wilson in videos the 80s. She was in shadows a lot, and you only saw her from the neck up. Nancy Wilson got all the attention in the videos.

I know no one can pass up an opportunity to be a cunt about Lizzo, but.....

I will say things have changed at least enough that they aren't trying to do that shit any more to her or others. The About Damn Time video was great. They presented her in the most flattering was possible without doing a whole dance of the seven veils to mask her size.

Who is Alison's favorite music artist?

This thread inspired me to relisten to Yazoo and Erasure’s catalog. Seems like Vince didn’t get on with Alison. Would have been interesting to hear some of Erasure’s hits sung by her. Erasure really did seem very Yazoo like, especially the first two albums.

Love this song by Alison. It was the first track of hers I really enjoyed since the 80s.
