A clip of Dusty Springfield giving advice to an aspiring pop singer, Sheena Easton, in 1980. From the BBC documentary series The Big Time. The episode made the unknown Scottish singer a sensation in the UK overnight.
Dusty Springfield giving advice to Sheena Easton

I wish Dusty had left her nose alone. The repeated rhinoplasties affected her tone.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 24, 2022 1:56 PM |
Sheena's singles had flopped before transmission of the show. She was very lucky to get that plaform.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 24, 2022 1:58 PM |
I loved Dusty once I found out who she was and her stardom. Great singer with a great catalog of albums and songs.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 24, 2022 5:17 PM |
Sheena looked like a little girl there!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 24, 2022 5:21 PM |
Sheena auditioned for ANNIE not long prior. Too old, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 24, 2022 5:22 PM |
She was 19 or 20
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 24, 2022 5:23 PM |
Dusty Springfield’s 1982 album White Heat has some great synth/new wave tracks. My fave is Donnez Moi.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 28, 2024 4:55 PM |
Dusty Springfield sharing her wisdom with aspiring pop singer Sheena Easton. The star emphasised the perils of drink and drug abuse, while discussing her own issues. After appearing on The Big Time, Sheena Easton went on to become an international star.⭐️
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 28, 2024 4:59 PM |
R1 Dusty 's face was bashed in with a frying pan by a violent lover. She had ni choice.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 28, 2024 5:00 PM |
R2 Her SINGLE “Modern Girl” was the only single EMI Records UK released prior to the episode airing. Sheena’s second single, “Morning Train (9 to 5)” was released the same week the BBC episode was broadcast. It, along with “Modern Girl” ascended into the UK top 10 simultaneously.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 28, 2024 5:05 PM |
Lesbian, apprently. Which makes r9 even worse.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 28, 2024 5:05 PM |
R9 oh really? I didn’t know…
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 28, 2024 5:06 PM |
R11 omg. Can you imagine Dusty Springfield eating Anne Murray’s pussy while they listen to Sheena Easton’s song “Sugar Walls” in the background?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 28, 2024 5:08 PM |
Is Anne Murray a lesbian?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 28, 2024 5:20 PM |
R14 surely you jest.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 28, 2024 5:50 PM |
I just ordered the newly-released expanded edition of Sheena's Do You album!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 28, 2024 5:56 PM |
R16 I have it. I love the Nile Rodgers unedited mixes of the Do You album. I bought it on CD and orange vinyl.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 28, 2024 5:59 PM |
R16 we could be twins! I’m also a bored Sheena Easton homosexual completist.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 28, 2024 6:04 PM |
Dusty's long time girlfriend was Roller Derby queen Julie Patrick.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 28, 2024 6:10 PM |
R19 Wasn't she also scissoring Nona Hendryx and tennis player Rosie Casals?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 28, 2024 6:12 PM |
No idea but she was always at the T-Bird games in LA with Julie. Most of the skaters, male and female were gay so it was a very nice place for them to be open.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 28, 2024 6:14 PM |
What have I done to deserve this?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 28, 2024 7:15 PM |
R15 no…I always thought it was a rumor…Whitney Houston didn’t teach me 💩 I guess…
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 28, 2024 7:17 PM |
It was sensible advice, and Dusty came off as very supportive of Sheena.
Contrast that with Lulu and her manager who told Sheena she had no business being in music and should have gone into movies.
I wonder if they met again at the 1982 grammy awards? Sheena won Best New Artist (at 7:45) and Lulu (who was also there) lost Best Rock Female Vocal to Pat Benatar.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 28, 2024 7:22 PM |
there was one image consultant that was fucking brutal to Sheena on that show. She took it on the chin though. I would have run from the room crying.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 28, 2024 7:24 PM |
Her speaking voice is as lovely as her singing voice. Unfortunately, Sheena didn't exactly listen to all this advice.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 28, 2024 7:37 PM |
Yeah but she had a career that 99.99% of all singers would love to have. I think her mistake was to pivot into ballads. She should have stayed funking yet steered away from the clunky synth she liked.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 28, 2024 7:40 PM |
R24 Lulu and her manager Marion Massey or whatever her changeable last name was, were not wanting new competition. Imagine being Lulu, a singer who was an established singing star for nearly 20 years at that point. Lulu was respected in the UK though she needed publicity whenever she could get it - especially going into a brand new decade, where lots of new studio technology was changing the sound of pop music. Older established artists were fearful of being left behind. Then Sheena Easton walks in - an attractive, talented young girl from Scotland who’s being filmed for nine months by BBC and supported by EMI records. She’s being sold as a fresh new pop singer for 1980s. Initially described as a new wave cross between Marie Osmond and Olivia Newton-John in the rag mags. Lulu and Marion were on edge.

Dusty Springfield is a class act. So is Sheena Easton.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 28, 2024 8:08 PM |
I was reading Easton's wiki bio. She's been married and divorced four times and the longest lasting marriage was 18 months. What's up with that?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 29, 2024 2:08 AM |
R30 Easton has always had a reputation in the industry for being a cunt. I don't doubt she's worse in relationships.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 29, 2024 2:11 AM |
Cunts. And I should know!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 29, 2024 3:08 AM |
Sheena's video for Morning Train has to be the one of the worst videos ever made. Even when you consider the time it was made. They dressed her like a psychopath who works at Wendy's.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 29, 2024 3:12 AM |
Bitch could sing though. What you got on a recording was what you got live.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 29, 2024 3:14 AM |
She had Prince's seal of approval years before he collaborated with Madonna. Ridiculous that she was left out of the tributes for him given the number of times they worked together.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 29, 2024 3:33 AM |
Prince was unabashedly and apologetically in love and in awe of Sheena. That does say a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 29, 2024 3:43 AM |
R28 throughout the whole of the 70’s and 80’s Lulu only had two hit singles in the UK, and one of those was a re-release of her first hit Shout. Lulu was 100% light entertainment, doing guest spots on shows and modelling for Freemans catalogue.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 29, 2024 6:07 AM |
[quote] I just ordered the newly-released expanded edition of Sheena's Do You album!
"Do You" is Sheena's best album -- "When The Lightning Strikes" is pure gold.
Also, Casablanca sent a promo copy of Dusty's "White Heat" LP to the student-run newspaper I worked for in high school. None of us knew Dusty Springfield. I took it home and fell in love.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 29, 2024 7:04 AM |
Great voice but had a tendency to be too shrill at times.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 29, 2024 4:20 PM |
R40 we would all have been suicidal if you hadn’t chimed in.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 29, 2024 4:39 PM |
Sheena? She had the look.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 29, 2024 4:58 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 29, 2024 6:02 PM |
I *adore* Dusty, but she's probably the last person who should've dispensed life advice to anyone. An acquaintance here, in Toronto, lived on the same street as Dusty and her partner Carole Pope in the early 00's and used to tell me stories of how dysfunctional that relationship was. There were times when the police had to come over for domestic disturbance since they were going at each other with frying pans.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 29, 2024 6:24 PM |
Sometimes, I think most of the times, those that have been through it are the best ones to give advice.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 29, 2024 6:47 PM |
R44 I remember Carole Pope from Rough Trade. I wonder who started the violence?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 29, 2024 7:17 PM |
R44 That’s impossible, Dusty died in1999, and by that time had been living on Henley-On-Thames in Oxfordshire for years. Your friend must have their dates wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 29, 2024 8:36 PM |
It was probably earlier then, R47. I got to know the guy in the early 00's.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 29, 2024 10:16 PM |
I bet Carole abused Dusty. Carole wrote an ode to fisting song earlier this year. I bet she tried to sexually abuse poor Dusty too. I’m just speculating.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 29, 2024 10:35 PM |
Here is “Play Fisty For Me” by Carole Pope

Dusty was into butch women and liked to be dominated. As mentioned above she used to hang out as those roller derby places, the women there were very butch.
Vicky Wickham the long term partner of Nona Hendryx since the 70’s has mentioned this. Vicky was a producer of the UK TV show Ready Steady Go in the 60’s. Dusty was the first artist to ever perform on the show and made numerous appearance. Dusty and Vicky remained friends until Dusty’s death and Vicky actually became Dusty’s manager from the time that she worked with Pet Shop Boys.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 30, 2024 10:42 AM |
[quote] Vicky Wickham the long term partner of Nona Hendryx since the 70’s has mentioned this.
Vicki Wickham became manager for Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles and facilitated there transition for them to become "Labelle." Vicki encouraged Nona Hendryx to write and fought the record labels to allow the group to record her compositions. Labelle's recordings and shows from that era are legendary.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 30, 2024 3:28 PM |
R51, I was in the Roller Derby world and all the lesbian women were not all butch. Her girlfriend Julie Patrick was not only not butch, she owned a hair salon and was fastidious about her hair, clothing and makeup. One of the butchest women on the track was Shirley Hardman but was known to be the femme in the relationships.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 30, 2024 4:41 PM |
R53 I take it that Shirley Hardman was the dom in their relationship?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 30, 2024 5:28 PM |
I got to meet Sheena at a Meet and Greet a few years ago, after a gig at a jazz club in Napa.
She was sweet and charming to me and my husband, and we got a photo of us together. At 5'10", we were towering over her. She is a tiny little thing.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 30, 2024 6:04 PM |
R54, Julie was with Shirley before Dusty so I assume she was the Dom in both. And just some info, Julie was one of the most beloved women in the community. Wonderful lady. Dusty was very fortunate to be in a relationship with her.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 30, 2024 7:06 PM |
R56 thx
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 30, 2024 7:09 PM |
She apparently invested her 80s money in real estate and did very well financially. She doesn't need to do concerts for the money, she just enjoys it.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 30, 2024 7:49 PM |
I've met Sheena too. I never knew a person could be so tiny and still have functioning internal organs.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 30, 2024 8:05 PM |
She’s 5’1” r55 r59
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 30, 2024 8:09 PM |
R59 when you’re 6’2” and push the scale at 350 lbs you pretty much dwarf everybody.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 30, 2024 8:14 PM |
You'd probably faint if you met Peter Dinklage R59.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 30, 2024 10:44 PM |
There seems to be a link between shorter singers and strong vocal abilities. I wonder why.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 30, 2024 11:13 PM |
r26 "Sheena didn't exactly listen to all this advice. "
Which aspects?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 30, 2024 11:21 PM |
I loved Dusty's music but I think by the mid 70s what was originally a bit of neurosis and a lack of self confidence turned into mental illness. That, or she always had bipolar tendencies.
She seemed to be attracted to strong women and probably thrived a bit on (for lack of a better term) dyke drama, so I believe the dysfunction as mentioned above.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 30, 2024 11:32 PM |
PS a lot of the dysfunctions are laid out in Dancing With Demons, a book co-written by Vicki Wyndham (the music manager, not the American soap actress).
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 30, 2024 11:34 PM |
Stay healthy, don't drink excessively or take recorded, cum showers with hip hop cons.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | October 1, 2024 12:38 AM |
Dusty had severe mentall illness and drug and alcohol issues. She was a hot mess for years before she finally got help and got sober.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | October 1, 2024 1:17 AM |
She had a terrible run of it in the 70s and late 80s - the rapid changes in the music scene made her seem like a relic overnight.
She did still have fabulous material here and there, though. WHITE HEAT should have been her comeback. I loved this song too....
by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 1, 2024 1:43 AM |
From White Heat here is I'm Curious written by her reported lesbian lover, Carole Pope of the band Rough Trade.
I guess she's curious about lesbianism?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | October 1, 2024 1:24 PM |
Sheena Easton looked up to Dusty Springfield as a singer. I recall Sheena singing "Son of a Preacher Man" during her The Lover In Me concert tour.

r44 I find this morbidly fascinating and funny. Just the thought of Carole Pope and Dusty Springfield beating each other with frying pans.

[Quote] Easton has always had a reputation in the industry for being a cunt
Sheena Easton stood up for herself. She and her manager Harriett Wasserman were shrewd with business deals. A man is labeled business savvy. A woman is labeled a cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 2, 2024 1:17 PM |
Springfield and her brother were both prone to food-throwing as adults
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 2, 2024 1:26 PM |
Sheena covered one of Dusty’s ballads, Just One Smile, on her Best Kept Secret album.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | October 2, 2024 3:18 PM |
Sheena was considered a cunt because she was rude, unprofessional and just outright nasty to the crews. She tried for a Vegas career (I think she lives there or did) and it went nowhere because no one would work with her. She's Patti Lupone only with even less fashion sense.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | October 2, 2024 4:48 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 82 | October 2, 2024 4:54 PM |
R81 you’re a liar. Sheena is the epitome of professional. To her fault, she takes it a bit far with requiring those who work for her to always be 100%.. but she is and was ALWAYS professional.
