I've always figured it must be hard to be married to a celebrity. The nature of their work means they're almost certainly self-absorbed and narcissistic. So they must be very high maintenance spouses, requireing lots of attention and support. And at the same time, being narcissists, they will be prone to discarding their supportive spouses as soon as they've sucked them dry in terms of support and attention.

So Mr Vitale probably earned that payoff, just from years of giving Val a steady stream of emotional support. Or to put it less nicely, for putting up with a lot of the typical Hollywood actor self-indulgent shit.
