Men are using condoms less, even as syphilis and other STDs surge
The basket of free ultrathin and studded condoms stayed full to the brim — a recurrent reality that no longer surprised the D.C. health workers offering HIV testing this month at a downtown plaza.
Public health authorities are confronting a rise in sexually transmitted infections in a world where condom use has steadily declined — and, with it, one of the most effective ways of curbing the spread of disease.
“They’ll laugh at it, or sometimes they get it and throw it away,” said Kevins Anglade, a community outreach worker for Whitman-Walker Health, a D.C.-based LGBT health-care organization that opened in the 1970s as the Gay Men’s Venereal Disease Clinic. “It’s a new normal, which is very sad.”
The United States recorded nearly 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in 2021, more than doubling in the past two decades, according to preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About half of new infections last year were in young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Men who have sex with men contract infections at higher rates than heterosexuals because they are more likely to have multiple recent partners and it’s easier for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to circulate in smaller networks of people.
Condoms, once central to campaigns to eradicate STDs at the height of the AIDS crisis, have become a harder sell because of medical advancements such as long-acting contraception and medications that drastically reduce HIV transmission.

Just wait until they get the “drip” for life. Sp many gay men fuck raw and take antibiotics like it’s candy, now gonorrhea and the clap are out of control and close to fully resistant to antibiotics. PrEP has great benefits on a micro level, but has huge downsides on a macro scale.

Testing testing testing. Any sexually active human with more than 1 partner should be tested every few months. Gays have learned that. Straight people haven't yet but are now fucking like gay people do.

R23, you have no idea what you are talking about. If the availability of PrEP is causing a huge decrease in condom usage and the skyrocketing of sexually transmitted diseases, then it is a huge problem. If PrEP didn't exist, these whoring voluntary disease vectors who are choosing to be breeding grounds for new mutations of various STDs would have to face the consequences of their own actions instead of placing those consequences on everyone else by creating antibiotic resistant strains that the entire world will have to deal with.

r37 Any straight woman who sleeps with a guy raw is an idiot, but any straight woman who sleeps with a (known) bi guy raw just hates herself for that statistic alone. STIs and STDs can cause significantly more damage to the female reproductive system; pelvic inflammatory disease, for example, can lead to infertility, and HPV can lead to cervical cancer.
That's one of the main reasons most straight women don't want bi men. They'd be playing Russian Roulette with their health.

I guess I'm just an old-fashioned prisspot, but the amount of random sex that a lot of other gay men I know (in my same age group) engage in is kind of shocking to me. And I don't say that to be judgmental, because I think people should do as they please. But taking 20 random loads one night at a bathhouse? I just don't have it in me. I'm fairly cautious when it comes to my health in general, and want to avoid contracting pretty much anything if I can. Less partners means less variables, and I kind of prefer it that way anyway. I had a lot of serious health problems when I was a child/young adult, ranging from cancer to congenital heart problems (I had to have open-heart surgery in my twenties), which probably plays into this.

Sex = fun, now
STDs = not fun, boner killer, aftermath
I think a lot of us still suffer from some sort of self loathing where we need "to feel something" after spending so much time in the closet or struggling otherwise. Even some out and proud gays still feel like they have something to prove by throwing themselves into a hedonistic lifestyle where sex needs to be raw and without filter.
This isn't about sex negativity, it's about throwing caution to the wind and rather go for quantity and instant gratification instead of quality and taking your time to make an informed decision (like, knowing your sex partner beyond what his online hook-up profile claims).

r75 Promiscuous people usually have one common denominator regardless of gender: low self-esteem. The other common denominator is daddy issues. Fathers do interesting numbers on both their sons and their daughters. I imagine it's even more pronounced when the son is gay because he's seeking sex with other men, and men are, by nature, not as selective and discriminate as women with sex.
The straight daughter with daddy issues and low self-esteem can very easily have a body count similar to, or slightly higher than, the gay man with the same issues for this exact reason. Her consequences will likely just be more shamed, though, especially when that consequence is ending up on an episode of Paternity Court testing potential baby daddy number 17.

R74, do you think straight men would fuck around as much as gay men do, if they could? I think so. Stigma is obviously not an issue for them. Male sexuality is designed by evolution to spread a man's seed around to be sure his genes are passed on. It's built in. There's no changing it, only controlling it. Women perform that function in the straight world, but there's nothing holding gay men back, now that social repression has been lifted.

Way to leave out the end of the article:
[quote] Scientists and health officials are now focused on vaccine development, affordable at-home testing and medication taken after sex as the next generation of weapons in the battle against sexually transmitted infections. The most promising of the options is an oral antibiotic taken as soon as possible after sex to prevent bacterial STDs, a strategy known as post-exposure prophylaxis. Preliminary data from a study funded by the National Institutes of Health showed the method was effective against gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. The CDC is developing clinical guidance to use the antibiotic for STD prevention in gay and bisexual men and transgender women who have HIV or take medication to prevent HIV — groups represented in the NIH study. While more at-home STD testing kits are entering the market, they are not affordable or distributed widely. Experts hope they can eventually be as accessible as rapid coronavirus tests.

Weird complaint for a woman to have, since many or even most women take a good half hour to warm up and become aroused sexually.
Perhaps if the man in question had given her foreplay before he started pumping and pounding away for close to an hour, she wouldn't have dried up and cooled off before he nutted.

The straight daughter with daddy issues and low self-esteem can very easily have a body count similar to, or slightly higher than, the gay man with the same issues.
For women, the daddy issues can go the other way. My Dad's regard for me such as it is vacillates, and while he is a fairly constant physical presence in my life he is emotionally closed off, impossible to talk to without being ranted at or talked over, and passive-aggressive thanks to physical abuse and neglect from his own parents/stepparents/siblings. He's always been a distant bare-minimum protector/provider to me and my siblings more than a demonstrative and attentive parent. While I trust that he'll always be around (no ;run to the store for cigarettes' routine) and probably will not hurt me, I wouldn't ever go to him with any emotional distress or problem I was having, or even a mild question or favour. It's hard to ask him for help or to connect with him on any level beyond superficial polite chat. In my mind, he's the quiet handyman my Mom happened to be fucking all my life. I'm not sure he deeply truly wanted kids of his own, especially not daughters, and that he just agreed to keep my Mom happy and also to have live-in nursemaids for when he gets old (so he thinks).
As for how that connects to promiscuity: I'm an adult virgin and completely celibate, plus closeted bisexual. Though I have a small attraction to men and wouldn't mind theoretically trying sex with one I liked and fancied who was nice enough to me (and clean ofc), I just don't trust or spend time with men willingly and so there's no chance of that happening, and I think the way my Dad has treated and raised me is part of the reason why. Luckily, I prefer women romantically and socially and sexually, so it's not that big of a deal (well, if I weren't terrified of partnered sex in general it wouldn't be a big deal). My parents think it's abnormal and strange that I have no sex/love (at my same age, they had kids and had been married for years), and can't understand that nidifugous imprinting or lack thereof may be part of the reason why, though it's not all down to my folks of course.

I wouldn't buy it because they will soon release a new console I guess. And this one will have backwards compatibility some said. You should buy condoms with the switch to prevent super-syphilis.

R78 I'm not R74, but you are right—men are biologically inclined to blow as many loads as they can, so it's natural that gay men are going to want to fuck more because you have testosterone working on both sides. That being said, we are talking about primordial impulses, and I don't know that giving into those fully is necessarily a good thing, psychologically or physically speaking. Getting your ass pumped with 50 loads in a night from random dudes might be hot to some in the moment (though utterly fucking exhausting), but I truly believe it's reckless, soul-sucking behavior. R76 is right that promiscuity is usually a symptom of low self-esteem. For whatever various psychological reasons, there are a lot of guys who get off on the idea of being "used". As much as I love dick, I don't relate to that at all.

Gay bottoms are unknowingly gain-of-function research test subjects for Pharma. Their rectums are incubators for a slurry of pathogens that during a 'black swan event' could undergo viral recombination and unleash the next global pandemic straight from their prolapsed 'wet market' into your nostrils, throat, eyes, and lungs. Heaven help us.

R103, the breeding/impregnation fetish is rampant in both the gay and straight world right now. I wonder if it's just a fad or if it's the result of something else going on in the world at large.

Some of these posts are really anti-sex and bordering on homophobic. If you don't want to fuck without a condom 🙄 If you don't want to take loads or do gangbangs, then don't do them. Easy peasy. Stop the judging.

R101, when I said that men are biologically inclined to fuck around, I didn’t mean it was an entirely good thing. For a stable society to evolve, that impulse has to be controlled, especially with hetero men. Gay men have more freedom, but centering your life around sex is not a good long-term strategy for happiness or good health.

R109, antibiotic resistance arises when a single antibiotic is heavily used against a specific bacteria. When you have an epidemic of gonorrhea among gay men, and they all have to be treated with ceftriaxone, the chances of resistance arising are increased. Unprotected sex with many partners spreads gonorrhea, among other things.
That's epidemiology, not "homophobia" or anti-sex.

I find it funny (and kind of disconcerting) that not being a sex addict who regularly walks around with the wads of 45 different men in their ass = being "homophobic" and "anti-sex". It's reductionist thinking if I've ever heard it.

R126. No. Untreated, it stays in your system for years until it literally rots your brain. Neurological outcomes. You'd be embarrassed, if you still had the compos mentis to be embarrassed. What's weird to me is why they're still so freaked out about. It is treatable and it is comparatively rare. I was notified I might have been exposed (tested negative) but when I went to my doctor he literally gasped: That's hardcore! That's reportable! MY confidence in him and comfort with him was never the same after that. (And this is a guy who is also a team doctor for a major sports team... I couldn't have been his first potential case.) Anyway, it's still got the powah.

The problem isn't with gays or even straights fucking around you idiots, it's the ANTIBIOTICS in the food chain. When you load meat up it doesn't go away with cooking. What do you self hating gays not understand? Everyone has to eat but everyone doesn't have sex like children etc, yet they still have to eat. ITS THE ANTIBIOTICS IN THE FOOD NOT THE FUCKING.

R128, no. The problem is that widespread and rising incidence of gonorrhea is leading to resistance to ceftriaxone, currently the drug of choice.

R127, docs shouldn’t show shock to their patients, but that he was shocked is not surprising, especially if you are white. Syphilis is pretty rare, especially among whites*, and it is hardcore. And it’s reportable, which is a big deal because most doctors can go years without seeing a case of a reportable disease. Because everyone in medicine is familiar with the history of syphilis and TB, these two diseases tend to detonate with some force in an ordinary medical practice.
*The incidence rate of syphilis per 100,000 for white males is 11 (only Asian men have a lower rate). For Hispanic males, 35. For black males, 58.

R132 I really don't know how else to explain this to you, you seem argumentative and dense, Do a Google search before opening your mouth. Ceftriaxone has cross resistance with other antibiotics, all antibiotics have some cross resistance, they literally mix antibiotics into animal feed, all animal feed including chicken unless it's totally organic which is rare. You eat antibiotics when you eat meat.
