Angry Mob boos US tourist who climbed a protected Mayan pyramid in Mexico: 'lock her up'

Footage of a woman climbing the steps of a protected Mayan pyramid in Mexico as a crowd of people call her out has blown up online, with many viewers accusing her of being disrespectful.

One version of the clip, which was uploaded by TikTok user @angelalopeze on November 21 and has received 3.7 million views, shows an unidentified woman scaling the steps of the Chichén Itzá, also known as El Castillo, a historical Mayan site in Yucatán, Mexico, that's been declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

[quote] @angelalopeze this is so disrespectful… don’t mess with my Mexican people 🇲🇽 #chichenitza #disrespectful #mayanpyramid #vacation #crazy #viral ♬ original sound - ang

The woman can be seen walking up the pyramid and dancing on the steps. She is followed by what appears to be a member of security who gestures for her to come down.

A gathering crowd can be heard shouting at the woman as she makes her way down the steps. At the bottom, she's met by a throng of people who boo her and throw water in her direction as she's escorted away. The chants from the crowd, mostly in Spanish, include, "out," "lock her up," and "jail!"

The caption on the TikTok video reads, "this is so disrespectful… don't mess with my Mexican people." Many of the top comments appeared to agree, while others highlighted the safety risks involved in the climb.

One comment with over 8,000 likes said, "I don't understand why they want to climb it. It's so steep, and it's historical. I mean one mistake and they're tumbling to their death."

Another video of the incident posted on Twitter which has over 7.1 million views shows the woman being led through the crowd of people throwing bottles in her direction, and one person can be seen grabbing her hair.

While tourists used to be able to climb the pyramid, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has prohibited visitors from climbing the monuments since 2008. According to Mexico's federal law on archaeological, artistic, and historic monuments and areas, anyone who violates or desecrates such areas is subject to a sanction and a fine of up to 50,000 pesos ($2,572.97).

A statement provided to Insider by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History confirmed the woman, identified as a tourist, "breached the ban to access the steps of El Castillo, affecting the operation of the site."

"The Ministry of Culture and the INAH call on the general public to respect the provisions established for public visits to archaeological zones and historical sites, which are determined to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience," the statement continued. "As well as to guarantee the conservation of heritage sites."

It added that the incident had been transferred to the Yucatán public safety authorities.

Local law enforcement in Yucatán did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Lock her up!

Lock her up!

Lol.

Can you hear them in the background?

"Idiota!"

"Estupida!"

Rofl.

Damn, that really was a mob.

by Anonymousreply 2November 23, 2022 12:50 AM

Are there any Mexicans here? Is this an organic reaction or is this a crowd of other tourists getting their mob on? Don't come for me, I'm not excusing this dumbass, but there's something tempting about being a part of that kind of juicy collective condemnation that I think some of us love a little too much.

Would also like to know how clear it was that climbing this structure was not OK. Is this just a moron we're dealing with, or a consciously malicious moron?

by Anonymousreply 3November 23, 2022 12:57 AM

Allegedly a Spanish woman, not American.

by Anonymousreply 4November 23, 2022 12:57 AM

Visitors were historically allowed to climb it until not too long ago, so while this is very rude, it's not as though she is the first person to be up there since the time of human sacrifices. Thousands of tourists used to tramp up and down those steps all day long.

by Anonymousreply 5November 23, 2022 12:59 AM

Well I guess she won't be doing THAT again!

by Anonymousreply 6November 23, 2022 1:00 AM

This is pretty ugly and fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 7November 23, 2022 1:01 AM

That mob looks like they were ready to tear her apart..lol.

by Anonymousreply 8November 23, 2022 1:01 AM

I don't like people who climb old ass pyramids especially when it's against the rules, but the water bottle throwing and grabbing her by the hair is over the top.

There's something sick about abusing someone and then turning to smile at another person. I want no part of a hive mind mob mentality and I actively try to avoid such stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 9November 23, 2022 1:06 AM

I climbed it when they had the rope at least to hold onto going up and down. I was hungover from tequila the night before and my vertigo was wicked. It was freezing inside the moon temple at the top. Freezing! Very cool though to see it up close.

by Anonymousreply 10November 23, 2022 1:09 AM

How did she get up there anyway? Doesn't it have security or something?

by Anonymousreply 11November 23, 2022 1:11 AM

I hope she got diarrhea!

by Anonymousreply 12November 23, 2022 1:12 AM

She's lucky they didn't rip out her beating heart! Oh, wait, that was the Aztecs.

by Anonymousreply 13November 23, 2022 1:13 AM

Suddenly, last summer.

by Anonymousreply 14November 23, 2022 1:15 AM

Who were those people escorting her?

They look like tour guides.

If so, why in hell didn't they tell her not to climb the pyramid?

by Anonymousreply 15November 23, 2022 1:17 AM

R15 This seems like some stunt.

by Anonymousreply 16November 23, 2022 1:18 AM

Deplorable !

by Anonymousreply 17November 23, 2022 1:31 AM

I also have climbed the pyramid, in 90 degree temps. Everyone used to be able to.

by Anonymousreply 18November 23, 2022 1:42 AM

[quote]Would also like to know how clear it was that climbing this structure was not OK.

What the fuck is wrong with you? It's an ancient temple, not a jungle gym. When you're visiting another country it's expected that you act with respect towards property, history and culture. You don't treat ancient artifacts like they're your own playground for acting out and making a spectacle of yourself. When you're in another country you shouldn't be acting like this at all. Show respect and restraint. Watch the locals for cues. Don't stand out. Be quiet and observe.

Normal people don't need this explained to them. Seriously, what is wrong with you?

by Anonymousreply 19November 23, 2022 1:44 AM

She was dumb to provoke the crowd by dancing in that taunting way

by Anonymousreply 20November 23, 2022 1:45 AM

When I went there it was pretty clear you were not to climb El Catillo

by Anonymousreply 21November 23, 2022 1:48 AM

I didn't read the part about her dancing, so I looked up the Tiktok video.

She's ridiculous.

So some stupid b**** climb some old ass stairs big f****** deal. Like I don't think when the gods commanded a temple to be built there was like you know an expiration date or an out of commission date I'm pretty sure they want somebody up there worshiping so really she's just trying to not defy Gods.

by Anonymousreply 25November 23, 2022 1:54 AM

[quote] Would also like to know how clear it was that climbing this structure was not OK.

In the video at R22, you can see (right as she arrives at the bottom of the steps) that there's a black railing surrounding the entire pyramid.

I think that's message enough.

by Anonymousreply 26November 23, 2022 1:55 AM

She must be...sacrificed!

by Anonymousreply 27November 23, 2022 2:00 AM

Not r3, I'm not defending that idiot tourist, but you really need to get a grip.

First, as others have pointed out, the ban on climbing is only from 2008, so it's not as if it's a sacred holy ground that shouldn't be desecrated.

Second, MANY similar World Heritage sites from Angkor Wat to Machu Picchu allow tourists to climb extensively through them, so asking how well it was marked is a legitimate question.

That person's behavior was terrible, but ignoring the restriction a legal violation, not moral one. Now, her behavior while climbing and dancing on the site was disrespectful, but the actual climbing itself wasn't some cultural transgression.

by Anonymousreply 29November 23, 2022 2:19 AM

r19, that troll doesn't work after MULTIPLE people have explained that you used to be able to climb the pyramid.

by Anonymousreply 30November 23, 2022 2:22 AM

My mistake, I didn't see r29's post until I hit post on my reply at r30. Apparently the fake outrage insult troll DOES work on DL, even when it's obvious.

Oh, we do have fun on the Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 31November 23, 2022 2:23 AM

Fuck around and find out, as they say I guess she did.

by Anonymousreply 32November 23, 2022 2:25 AM

She'll be breaking to Kaaba next to take a dump. Good luck, sis.

by Anonymousreply 33November 23, 2022 2:26 AM

I also climbed it years ago. It has 91 steps and each one is about a foot high, so on a hot and humid day it's grueling.

Coming down was much more difficult. The guide recommended putting your feet diagonally because the depth of each step is shorter than a lot of people's feet. I stayed toward the edge away from people using the rope or going down 1 step at a time on their butts.

It's an amazing structure - the 91 steps per side plus the final shared step at the top = 365 for the days of the year. It makes you wonder how in the hell did they cut the stones so perfectly and build so high without modern tools and cranes.

by Anonymousreply 34November 23, 2022 2:29 AM

r4, it doesn't matter. We'll get blamed regardless.

by Anonymousreply 35November 23, 2022 2:32 AM

"First, as others have pointed out, the ban on climbing is only from 2008,"

You think it takes longer than fourteen years to figure out that a barrier around a building means the general public doesn't have access to it?

by Anonymousreply 36November 23, 2022 2:34 AM

I don't understand the argument that this was okay because it was allowed 14 years ago. Are we to believe that this yahoo was there 14 years ago and did her little dance with approval and permission from the locals, and then came back and just innocently relived the moment in 2022, somehow faultlessly unaware of a black metal barrier and copious signage surrounding the structure?

Seriously? The trolls here are dumber than ever.

by Anonymousreply 37November 23, 2022 2:43 AM

Is that a woman or a “woman”?

by Anonymousreply 38November 23, 2022 2:45 AM

This is fake. I have no idea why, but this was staged.

LOL - no, Rose. I pointed out that the ban is relatively recent to highlight the fact that the accusation of climbing it as being some sort of heretical transgression against an entire culture and civilization is a bit extreme and that the ban was not a ban of "cultural significance" but based on other considerations.

It's simpler than all that. The rules are in place simply to protect an historic structure from the effects of 2.5M tourists who visit it annually.

In the 1840s trees grew out of the Temple of Kukulcán, and until recent years visitors could climb its steps. Both of those things have changed, both in the interests of preserving the structure.

She danced up on the pyramid because she is a dumb cunt who thought the crowd was catcalling her in approval.

by Anonymousreply 64November 23, 2022 10:08 AM

When I saw people taking flash photos in the Sistine Chapel, completely ignoring the signs not to do so (it destroys thr paint pigment), I wanted to do a lot more than throw water and pull hair.

by Anonymousreply 65November 23, 2022 10:14 AM

Since the ban has only been in effect since 2008, I don't see how this is "disrespectful". Seems like it's just a safety precaution - she was only endangering herself, no need for a mob to get worked up about it.

by Anonymousreply 66November 23, 2022 10:23 AM

As if Mexicans are so invested in Mayan ruins. It's a weird reaction from the crowd.

Ironic that some people here on DL are defending her.

Is this not the same board which was handing down the death penalty to protesters who touched DaVinci's artwork or something?

by Anonymousreply 73November 23, 2022 11:29 AM

They weren't DaVinci's sturdy stone steps.

by Anonymousreply 74November 23, 2022 11:37 AM

R73, DL is full of idiot contrarians. They have no consistent logic. Every opinion is a funhouse mirror they throw up against any other opinion or assertion. They live to condescend to people over pointless dissent. They're morons of the highest order.

by Anonymousreply 75November 23, 2022 12:00 PM

I had to laugh when she reached the bottom of the stairs, when she thought she would be welcomed with cheers.

Instead, she was pelted with rocks and doused with water.

That was hilarious!!

by Anonymousreply 76November 23, 2022 7:14 PM

I haven't seen a single person defending her. Some people are curious about the signs and instructions not to climb the pyramid (I was one of the curious people, because I haven't visited this place so wasn't sure). That doesn't mean anyone thinks this was a good or smart idea. If it matters I can state categorically that it was very stupid and careless of her to do this.

by Anonymousreply 77November 23, 2022 7:14 PM

Even old ladies were pulling her hair!

Lol

by Anonymousreply 78November 23, 2022 7:18 PM

R73, because this behavior was against those filthy brown people who don't count as human. DL's reaction is no surprise. So many garbage humans who go off about "woke" and use the whole "both sides" argument when comparing left-wing nonsense to right-wing violence and discriminatory legislation.

by Anonymousreply 79November 23, 2022 7:24 PM

She should just go climb the ruins in Tikal.

by Anonymousreply 80November 23, 2022 7:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 83November 23, 2022 7:51 PM

R77/R81 Having had a look through the thread it doesn't look like anyone was outright defending her. But there's definitely a more lenient approach applied. Earlier posts noting that the ban is "only from 2008" as an example.

And the description of her detractors as a "mob" is a bit slanted against them and victimizes her a bit.

No way was DL doing that when people were touching DaVinci's artwork. People here seemed happy to join the mob in condemning them without showing an ounce of sympathy.

R75 and that's why we're here - they're fun to watch.

I climbed it before they put a stop to that, sometime in the 00's, and coming down, as noted above, is 91 steps of slippery hell. Or maybe I had the wrong shoes. Anyway, those stones have been smoothed by the centuries. How she got down them staying upright let alone "danced," especially if she were high or whatever, is a small miracle.

So "Yes," of course she's an asshole, but not one without talent.

by Anonymousreply 86November 23, 2022 8:15 PM

When I was there nobody was allowed to climb.

I think they said it was because it was dangerous and that some people had died falling from the structure.

Those steps do look pretty steep.

You can climb the pyramids of the Sun and The moon in Teotihuacán, I believe. Way bigger, too.

by Anonymousreply 87November 23, 2022 8:20 PM

Except she wasn’t American, r83. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 88November 23, 2022 8:26 PM

This video has made me want to visit the site.

But it's a bummer you can't hike to the top.

I'd love to see the inner chamber, where they sacrificed people.

If you can hike up the Giza Pyramids, why can't you hike up these?

by Anonymousreply 89November 24, 2022 4:04 AM

I commented on the "mob" behaviour and stand by that comment, R84. You can feel the ugly energy in that video, how close that situation is to more serious violence. I'm not sure how that lets this dumbass off the hook at all, though. She can be a complete asshole (which it appears she is, although apparently not an American one), AND that crowd can be a mob. One being awful doesn't somehow make the other not-awful.

The "ban has only been in effect since 2008" comments are in response to the poster losing their shit earlier in the thread about great cultural offense and HOW DARE YOU etc. - they're countering that poster specifically, not trying to excuse what this woman did. She fucked up, no one is saying otherwise. But people were walking all over that pyramid as recently as ~14 years ago so there's obviously not some super-sensitivie cultural taboo about touching/walking on the stones in place. Which to be clear, and again: doesn't make what this woman did OK.

As for the artwork I was actually in those threads, 1 of 2 people commenting on the mob-like mentality of many of the posters there indulging themselves in exactly the kind of delicious/self-righteous outrage we see in the video and continually posting about great art being "destroyed" when those protestors are very obviously only chucking paint at works that are entirely protected from being damaged. Mob behaviour is shit, and I refuse to call it out only in some instances and not in others.

by Anonymousreply 90November 24, 2022 7:11 AM

[quote]But people were walking all over that pyramid as recently as ~14 years ago so there's obviously not some super-sensitivie cultural taboo about touching/walking on the stones in place.

FFS, it's not about deferring to the sensitivities of a lost society of child sacrifice and advanced early writing systems, it's about preserving the physical monuments of our collective history and artistic heritage.

In England in the past a person in decent clothes could present himself at the door of any great country house and give the housekeeper a few coins for a tour when the owners were not in residence. There photos of people having meals in Egyptian tombs in the 1920s. People used to smoke on the London Tube, in airplanes, in some museums. The White House used to be open for one and all to wander in, have a look around, admire the artifacts of the Lewis & Clarke expedition, or to try to pigeonhole the president or his staff.

Rules change. The pyramid is recognized as an historic and artistic monument visited not by a few thousands of people each year but by 2.8M people. Safety of the visitors and protection of the very resource they have come to visit sometimes mean that rules change.

"Well they let people climb to the top 14 years ago" doesn't give license to do it today.

FFS it's a 1000 - 1500 year old world heritage site of the highest significance crawling with 2.8M tourists a year. The protections are in place to preserve the monument.

Newsflash for R89, another DL cryptkeeper for who whom time stands still. Climbing the pyramids of Giza is illegal and Egyptian justice doesn't look kindly on bleached blonde Frau tourists and gap-year pranksters who do so.

Let's review.

You may no longer sit on the Spanish Steps.

You may not visit Komodo Island.

NYU, Columbia and NYC Subway tearooms went the way of the Dodo bird.

The Pioneer Cabin Tree and The Azure window have collapsed.

You may:

Kiss the Blarney Stone.

Kiss my old fat whore ass, which doesn't live in a time warp.

Dear R92 and R95: Once again, NO ONE is saying that the pyramid being unprotected in 2008 means that a)it should be unprotected now or that b)it excuses what this woman did. Again: NO ONE is saying that. You do not need to argue against positions that aren't being taken. Stand down.

by Anonymousreply 101November 24, 2022 7:25 PM

It’s funny how everyone just assumed she was American.

by Anonymousreply 102November 24, 2022 7:33 PM

I guess it would be the equivalent of someone took a dump in Abe Lincoln's lap in the Lincoln memorial

by Anonymousreply 103November 24, 2022 7:42 PM

I took a dump in Abe Lincoln's lap 14 years ago. Everyone was doing it in 2008.

by Anonymousreply 104November 24, 2022 11:19 PM

I think her dancing pushed the crowd over the edge.

It was horrible!

by Anonymousreply 105November 25, 2022 2:46 AM

Stop defending the people who are taking a dump on Abe Lincoln's lap!

by Anonymousreply 106November 25, 2022 4:17 AM

[quote] Are there any Mexicans here? Is this an organic reaction or is this a crowd of other tourists getting their mob on? Don't come for me, I'm not excusing this dumbass, but there's something tempting about being a part of that kind of juicy collective condemnation that I think some of us love a little too much. Would also like to know how clear it was that climbing this structure was not OK. Is this just a moron we're dealing with, or a consciously malicious moron?

Every time some stupid person blonde woman pulls these stunts a DLer comes out to white knight for her, tutting at people condemning her, wanting to “hear the whole story” and assuming there is a lack of signage.

For fuck’s sake r3.

by Anonymousreply 107November 25, 2022 10:32 AM

Did she spit on a God? Jesus fucking Christ. Was it blasphemy? Sacrilege? Some ugly looks and ppinting/whispering would suffice. She didn't deserve mass condemnation for dancing on a thing that was hidden by forest for centuries before it was discovered in the 19th or 20th century. How important could it be if y'all FORGOT IT WAS THERE for centuries?

by Anonymousreply 108November 25, 2022 11:17 AM

I hope her next move is to a climb on the roof of a former slave plantation and film a tik tok video there.

Or maybe to the driveway in front of Kate Middleton’s house at Windsor Park and film a sex tape there.

by Anonymousreply 109November 25, 2022 11:30 AM

[quote] How important could it be if y'all FORGOT IT WAS THERE for centuries?

Y’all, R108 wants to use the bust of Nefertiti as a garden gnome.

by Anonymousreply 110November 25, 2022 11:36 AM

This whole thing is so bizarre it looks staged. Who becomes so enraged over something like this that they mob and pull the woman’s hair? She climbed some steps. Calm down. Fine her, publish her image, but physically attacking her?

People are out of fucking OUT OF CONTROL right now. Human society needs to pull its shit together.

by Anonymousreply 111November 25, 2022 11:50 AM

You were literally shown R19 in MULTIPLE posts before your ridiculous self righteous anger embarrassingly manifested, that people used to climb it ALL THE TIME, that there were ropes in place to assist people in climbing until just a few years ago.

CALM DOWN.

by Anonymousreply 112November 25, 2022 11:53 AM

You people excusing the crowds behavior have serious antisocial psychotic tendencies. Get help. No surprise for DL. Get help.

by Anonymousreply 113November 25, 2022 12:01 PM

The people defending her are definitely weird.

by Anonymousreply 114November 25, 2022 12:12 PM

I was there in the 90s. I wanted to climb the stairs; inspired by the beginning of Gin Miller’s Reebok Step workout (remember her?) I got a quarter way up and turned around so my Mom could take a picture. That was a mistake as it made me a little dizzy so I crawled back down. I do remember being able to see some graffiti in the temple at the top.

The climbing ban probably arose from wanting to protect the site as well as a safety to the visitors. If she was there as part of a tour, I’m sure the guide expressly told them NOT to climb the stairs and mentioned the barriers. She was stupid enough to do it anyway.

by Anonymousreply 115November 25, 2022 12:39 PM

Why are modern day Mexicans so wound about it? Aren’t they descended from the Spaniard colonists who wiped out the very civilisation that built the pyramid?

by Anonymousreply 118November 25, 2022 1:16 PM

Because she’s a cunt, r118.

And no one likes a cunt.

No, you trolling fool. All cultures are violent.

The difference is that if a similar mob had formed in America, this woman would have been shot to death.

What that woman did was ugly. Watching that mob grow nasty was ugly. There was ugly all around.

by Anonymousreply 120November 25, 2022 1:32 PM

You’re supposed to dance like there’s *no-one* watching!

My pyramids are unguarded!

by Anonymousreply 123November 25, 2022 3:39 PM

I went to Chichen Itza about 10 years ago and a lot of people were climbing it. What I most remember about Chichen Itza were all the Mexicans begging, asking for "just one dollar".

by Anonymousreply 124November 25, 2022 3:50 PM

R45: yeah, unlike the black dude at Walmart who murdered four of his coworkers. But “Karens” are THE WORST!

by Anonymousreply 125November 25, 2022 3:59 PM

[quote]Quote any racism you have read in this thread.

Oh, please. Anyone who has been on DL for years like myself, sees the difference in reaction to behavior by white people vs. others. It's like a fucking dinnerbell going off for hyenas if it's a crime or something said by a non-white person. Had the killer in Colorado been black or Hispanic or Muslim, the racist gay white hyenas on here would've gone off on the millions of blacks, Hispanic and Muslims who had nothing to do with that *individual* had done. Do you see people blaming all white people in those threads?

I've been on platforms where it was predominantly white heteros. Many gay white men are far more hateful and prejudice than them. I mean the idiotic obsession with whether someone is "white" enough alone, is pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 126November 25, 2022 4:48 PM

So a Mexican woman with a sad blonde wig is publicly shamed trying for climbing and dancing on a ruin, and r125 puts the blame on a black Walmart killer.

I’m shocked, shocked.

by Anonymousreply 134November 25, 2022 7:15 PM

R125 is a shithead, popping in to validate all the "anyone who mentions the mob is a RACIST" trolls in one racist post. Well done, R125.

Also this woman being a Mexican herself now makes it awkward for the racists *and* the virtue signalers in this thread. Yay.

by Anonymousreply 135November 25, 2022 7:18 PM

The mob didn’t attack her for what she literally did as much as for what it symbolized.

by Anonymousreply 136November 25, 2022 7:40 PM

Talk about a butterface!

by Anonymousreply 137November 25, 2022 7:41 PM

I’m surprised she didn’t melt like that Nazi at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

by Anonymousreply 138November 25, 2022 7:42 PM

What that mob did to her is nothing compared to the endless curses coming her way. The gods are angered!

by Anonymousreply 139November 25, 2022 7:44 PM

Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end!

by Anonymousreply 140November 25, 2022 7:45 PM

Sorry bad wig bitch, but I did the "shame" walk a thousand times better.

I did fucking naked.

by Anonymousreply 141November 25, 2022 7:50 PM

Wonder how many in the crowd have friends or family that just climbed their way over the US border.

No, im not white either. But Mexicans of all should be beyond grateful for these tourists even stepping foot in that country.

by Anonymousreply 142November 25, 2022 7:55 PM

Get back to me when they start devouring her.

by Anonymousreply 143November 25, 2022 7:58 PM

When I was a kid we climbed all over Mayan pyramids. It was legal up until just recently so the faux outrage is a bit much. But yeah, she must have known this was no longer permitted.

by Anonymousreply 144November 25, 2022 8:16 PM

R101

Hypervigiliant much?

Eat some more turkey and unclench!

by Anonymousreply 145November 27, 2022 4:57 AM

Agreed that the mob's rage was creepy and out there. It was anti-American/anti-white animosity. One suspects that like some posters on this thread, the mob mistook her for a blonde whitey American or other tourist of Northern European ethnicity. Had she been dark-haired and dark-skinned of apparent Latin ethnicity the disapproval would have been present but notched down.

[Quote]Officials said that Abigail Villalobos had attempted to pass herself off as a Spaniard after she was arrested for her viral stunt, but it has since been determined that she is actually from Mexico.

She sounds (and looks) off. She received a fine of only about $250 so, boys, if you want to climb Mayan pyramids that's the meager entry fee.

[quote] Polish Tourist enrages crowd by climbing stairway to gods at Mayan temple, officials say

A Polish tourist was hit in the head with a stick and yelled at after walking up the steps of the Mayan pyramid in Chichén Itzá, according to the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia of Mexico.

The pyramid, an archaeological and historical site, has been closed to climbing since 2008, but that didn’t stop the man from crossing into the restricted area and walking up the stairs of the pyramid on Jan. 28.

In a video circulating on social media, the man can be seen being led down the steps of the Temple of Kukulcán, the Mayan pyramid, by site officials. When he reaches the ground, he is met by an angry crowd.

Other local and international tourists can be heard yelling obscenities and voicing their anger toward the tourist in the video.

The tourist is then approached from behind by a shirtless man holding a large stick while being led away from the temple.

The shirtless man swings the stick, hitting the back of the man’s head. The site officials then attempt to lead the tourist through the crowd where he continued to be berated.

The Mexico Daily Post reported that the man had accessed the area “to take pictures and share them on social networks.”

The man was arrested by the Municipal Police of Tinum and held for 12 hours before being released with a fine, José Arturo Chab Cárdenas, head of the INAH Yucatan Center, said in a statement according to Aristegui Noticias.

Chab Cárdenas said the man was a visitor from Poland and that he had been fined 5,000 pesos, the equivalent of around $266.

His arrest comes just two months after another tourist went viral for walking up the steps despite yells from onlookers. The woman climbed the temple on Nov. 20 and when she came back down, people threw food and water at her and pulled her hair.

The Temple of Kukulcán was built by the Mayans for the feathered serpent god Kukulcán between 800 and 900 A.D., according to Atlas Obscura. The temple helped the Mayans to track the summer and winter equinoxes, when the Mayans said Kukulcán would return to commune with his worshippers and bring good health and healthy crops.

“Tourists must respect the security measures of the INAH in the archaeological zone to preserve the cultural heritage of Mexico, take care of other visitors and enjoy that Mayan legacy,” Chab Cárdenas said to the Mexico Daily Post.
