Entertainment industry predictions for the next five years

Here are mine

-Audiences slowly grow tired of super hero movies and studios take note and shelve some projects.

-Kate McKinnon's post SNL career flops. We end up seeing lesser known female comedians and character actresses like Nicole Byer, Betsy Sodaro, Mary Holland, Lauren Lapkus, Alison Rich, and Jessica McKenna have bigger careers than McKinnon because casting directors realize McKinnon is an arrogant and overrated hack.

-Melissa "Muppet Voice" Villasenor who is already a weak actress does several movies and TV shows post SNL and flops once casting directors and others realize that she is only useful for celebrity impersonations. Aidy Bryant also does several projects, but doesn't get attention because she's a weak actress like Villasenor.

-Cecily Strong has decent post SNL career and does well in dramatic roles and becomes a favorite with critics.

-Rachel Zegler and Jenna Ortega's careers stay hot for awhile, but their careers go down the shitter at some point.

-Ariana DeBose has a steady career, but never gets another Oscar.

-Hallmark, GAC Family, and Lifetime eventually gets called out by many people for filming most of their crap movies in Canada which leads to various issues for all the companies and less of their crap movies get made once they are pressured to film in American states that offer tax breaks.

-Kaley Cuoco disappears for awhile and then re-emerges in a successful streaming or cable show.

-Elisabeth Moss's career post Handmaid's Tale stalls for awhile.

by Anonymousreply 7November 22, 2022 3:10 PM

Brad Pitt will have a freak accident that leaves him with facial burns. He ends up marrying a young nurse and they have a baby---that dies.

Johnny Depp will catch up with him once and for all. He'll either die or have a stroke, and end up like Shane MacGowan or Tim Curry. Estranged from his family and with no real friends, he has nobody to take care of him, so he ends up marrying one of his cult-like fans, and she attempts to smother him with a pillow or drown him in a pool. Will he survive? Will she go to jail?

A Kardashian sister dies.

Alec Baldwin will be arrested for hitting Hilaria. He goes nuts after losing his family, so tries to adopt a baby but is rejected because of his age and anger issues.

The Eurovision will be bombed.

The Oscars will have a mass shooting.

Dr Phil will be arrested for Domestic violence.

Al Pacino will die. Robert will live.

Tom Cruise will be outed as a murderer.

[quote] Alec Baldwin will be arrested for hitting Hilaria. He goes nuts after losing his family, so tries to adopt a baby but is rejected because of his age and anger issues.

This doesn’t sound so far fetched.

by Anonymousreply 9November 24, 2022 12:36 AM

Public tired of Superhero movies? That isnt in the future, they already replaced the Disney guy due to not meeting targets because superheros are overexposed now and market is cooling down.

by Anonymousreply 10November 24, 2022 12:38 AM

Nicole Kidman will suddenly transition to a cyborg.

As much as I hate it, social media influencers will be making a lot more money than most working actors.

by Anonymousreply 11November 24, 2022 12:42 AM

Broadcast TV starts to move even more quickly to irrelevance - in a decade or so, it will look more like a combination of reality contests and QVC or the like, with some local news mixed in. Any show that costs anything substantial (for production values, writing, directing or acting) will be on a pay basis only, whether on a streaming brand/network or a PPV type setup.

by Anonymousreply 12November 24, 2022 12:42 AM

I don't hate McKinnon but it annoys me how overrated SNL ladies are and how they are always given first dibs for movie scripts compared to other even more talented comedic actresses ( like the ones OP listed). I agree that villesenor can only do celeb impressions. She is not an actress.

by Anonymousreply 13November 24, 2022 12:49 AM

Physical media has a major comeback because streaming platforms start to pull or censor movies and shows deemed "problematic" and because big streaming services go under and they fight over who will get the rights to all the content on them so you can't watch it anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 14November 24, 2022 12:52 AM

There is a non-binary performance the Academy Awards really likes and they don't know whether to put them in Best Actress or Best Actor, so they do away with those categories altogether and have "Best Performance" and "Best Supporting Performance."

by Anonymousreply 15November 24, 2022 1:00 AM

Disney will make a movie with a trans princess.

A popular horror franchise has a non-binary "final person" instead of a "final girl" and it makes a lot of money with people applauding it for its progressiveness. So we will see other horror films with non-binary and trans protagonists to follow suit.

by Anonymousreply 16November 24, 2022 1:19 AM

R11 they already are!

by Anonymousreply 17November 24, 2022 1:49 AM

[quote] but it annoys me how overrated SNL ladies are

Honestly, almost all SNL performers are vastly overrated and/or given unearned clout in landing films.

Setting the men in the original/early cast aside (who all had success in film) Eddie Murphy and Adam Sandler have been the main successes in film, and to some degree they already had an act/character or something fully formed that they brought to SNL.

Kristen Wiig and Will Farrell had some success but they played variations on the same character a number of times.

I can understand them being sought after in shows with a smaller scope. That Hulu thing with Aidy Bryant was perfect for her. Investing multimillions in a concept as dumb as MacGruber for Will Forte is just....what the fuck were they thinking?

by Anonymousreply 18November 24, 2022 3:35 AM

Robert Downey Jr. will finally come out.

by Anonymousreply 19November 24, 2022 3:52 AM

Ezra Miller will win the Oscar for Best Performance for their role as a trans Princess in a Disney film.

by Anonymousreply 20November 24, 2022 3:55 AM

[quote] I don't hate McKinnon but it annoys me how overrated SNL ladies are and how they are always given first dibs for movie scripts compared to other even more talented comedic actresses ( like the ones OP listed). I agree that villesenor can only do celeb impressions. She is not an actress.

Lorne Michaels has probably gone to bat for McKinnon and some former/ current SNL cast members when it comes to film projects. It's clear he has his favorites and I don't think Villasenor is one of his favorites. Villasenor constantly flubbed her lines in sketches where she wasn't impersonating celebs. She was a weak link in that aspect and people caught on and that's probably why she didn't get a lot of air time at SNL.

Leslie Jones was another constant line flubber, but TPTB at SNL didn't have enough sense to reduce her air time like they did with Villasenor. Leslie Jones irritates me more than Villasenor and other SNL alums. She often shouted her lines in sketches and some of her Weekend Update stuff was cringeworthy and somehow she managed to get Emmy nominations. She is also quite arrogant and I could see her being stupid enough to play Stacey Abrams in a dramatic TV series or movie and her failing miserably.

[quote]Audiences slowly grow tired of super hero movies and studios take note and shelve some projects.

Damn, I hope. I've been waiting for this epoch of superhero movies to end for the past 10 years now. I like superhero movies and all, but that genre has been played the fuck out. Time for the industry to move on and stop catering to man-children.

After Barbara Walters dies Joy Behar writes a scorch the earth tell all about her View co-hosts and also their guests over the years. Truly scathing. Joy figures she's in her 80s now and so what who cares about burning bridges at this point.

Her book will make past books about the show look like fawning tributes.

by Anonymousreply 27November 24, 2022 6:11 AM

R27 I imagine her entire chapter on Megan " My Father" McCain would be quite fun.

by Anonymousreply 28November 24, 2022 6:36 AM

G. will remain Oscarless.

by Anonymousreply 30November 24, 2022 7:39 AM

R27, Joy admitted to Andy Cohen that she keeps a diary.

by Anonymousreply 31November 24, 2022 9:56 AM

The superhero glut and cancels has already started. More so in TV/Streaming series than in movies so far though. They have their place for sure, but they've really done them to death in more recent years.

I wish they'd cut back on the TV and movie reboots/remakes already too. They rarely been an improvement over the originals. There is little creativity left in Hollywood these days, so I don't see it stopping.

by Anonymousreply 32November 24, 2022 10:26 AM

A minor re-emergence of art house cinemas and small, independent films.

by Anonymousreply 33November 24, 2022 10:42 AM

A prominent actress (Charlize Theron?) becomes a vessel for alien forces who warn us that we have to change our energy practices or die. Streaming platforms overreach and fail, and we all go back to reading books or doing sudoku as our primary entertainment. Many closeted homosexuals continue to have gay sex without our knowledge.

by Anonymousreply 34November 24, 2022 10:49 AM

I would swap Charlize for Keanu.

I'm R8. I meant Johnny Depp's drinking will finally catch up with them. My error made it sound like he would try to kill Brad Pitt.

by Anonymousreply 37November 24, 2022 3:47 PM

Singers will only make albums to appear pretentious. Soon, in da age of streaming, only singles will be released.

by Anonymousreply 38November 24, 2022 3:51 PM

Cher will have another massively popular hit song and then start her final Farewell tour. Janet Jackson will be her opening act.

Adele will be crushed by falling stage scenery in Las Vegas. Ironically if she’d had a little more meat on her bones it would’ve cushioned the blow and she’d have survived.

The opening weekend take of Bros 3 is $116,000.

by Anonymousreply 43November 24, 2022 4:14 PM

Avatar 2 will be an embarrassing and costly flop.

Casts for very expensive and high profile movies will become less diverse and “woke” narratives won’t be pushed so heavily.

Olivia Wilde will peddle her directing services to Marvel or DC or one of the big ones and she’ll get turned down.

The Oscars will hand Best Picture to Wakanda Forever in a desperate Hail Mary for relevancy and have their lowest rated telecast yet.

by Anonymousreply 44November 24, 2022 4:26 PM

Pete Davidson will fulfill all cynical and corporate plans and predictions and become major box office, much like Adam Sandler before him. It will be confirmed many times over by all the women who he banged out on his way up, that his member is real and spectacular. He will have so many hundreds of millions that he will move into producing and also merchandise. He'll be the next Kanye including the irreparable mental breakdown in his mid to late 40s.

by Anonymousreply 45November 24, 2022 4:30 PM

Leslie Jones is funny, but only has a note or two in her repertoire.

She'd be fine as a comedienne in the Sommore vein, but indeed, trying to play Stacey Abrams or doing something dramatic would be well beyond her reach.

by Anonymousreply 46November 24, 2022 6:40 PM

Producers or casting directors worth their salt wouldn't cast Jones as Stacey Abrams. Uzo Aduba or Aisha Hinds would be decent choices to play Abrams.

There will probably be a bunch of movies or TV shows about the 2020 election, insurrection, and the pandemic. Jones could probably weasel her way to into a project to play Abrams.

Other actors will sign onto those projects because it's possible awards bait Some blond actress likely Sarah Paulson would be willing to wear prosthetics to play Marjorie Taylor Greene in a project. Paulson would also be the type to don brunette wigs and prosthetics to play Gretchen Whitmer if given the chance.

by Anonymousreply 47November 24, 2022 10:01 PM

Greta Gerwig has a string flop films and takes a break from directing.

by Anonymousreply 48November 24, 2022 11:23 PM

I predict Streisand will release her autobiography in the next five years (if we're lucky) and more 'remastered, vaulted' recordings - but no new studio album. The dreadful "Walls" is the last of her recordings from 2018.

I also believe over the next five years, she will continue to say in interviews that 'her passion is directing movies' above all else, even though she has only directed three films in forty years. Her 'inner circle' and her aging fan base will believe her when she says she has a few directorial projects lined up, as they've believed her since her last directorial effort in 1996. They'll believe she has some movies to direct and that those movies will see the light of day, as she enters her mid-80s.

Tommy Cruise will finally be exposed for being a virgin alien 👽

Mackenzie Phillips will announce she had a consensual sexual affair with her mother for years. When the public shrugs, she makes a corrected announcement and says it was her step-mother Michelle Phillips. When the public shrugs, she says she was abducted by aliens when she was 12 and they got her addicted to heroin and morphine, as well as cough medicine. Everyone yawns. Trying once more to shock everyone and resurrect her career in her 60s, she announces she's the biological mother of Brittney Spears whom she gave up for adoption when she was starring on 'One Day At A Time'. Brittney Spears sees her career resurrected by this announcement.

I'm hoping the age of Superhero movies is over and we see some campy parodies of them.

I think we have reached peak drag. I can't see anyone taking over for Rupaul when he retires and there is a backlash brewing over Drag Queen Story Hour and from people who see it as 'Woman Face.' I think it will go back to being very niche and not lucrative.

Neither Will nor Jada or any member of the now known to be trashy Smith family will have any financially successful entertainment endeavors and will become of family act of stand up comics who spend their time thinking up the worst ways to insult audience members who refuse to attend their "shows".

Finally ending up brok, the family will be reduced to panhandling outside all subsequent Oscar broadcasts until they are banned from coming withing 20 miles of the Oscar venue.

Trey probably could if he wanted to.

Amber heard will bag a Netflix show ( I'm thinking a dark comedy). She will marry some L.A. power lesbian ( probably an artist).

Depp will receive critical acclaim in an indie film comeback. He will play a man who returns tp his hillbilly small town after years of living in the big city and has to wrestle with his past. Depp will get an Oscar but wind up ODing months later.

by Anonymousreply 62November 26, 2022 2:59 AM

Anti-cancel culture homophobia will bleed into entertainment. Gay characters and romance will become rare in the western movie/TV scene. Britney Spears will retire and be canceled for her Instagram rants and raves. Miley Cyrus will release another flop album and decide to stick to acting in indie nonsense. Stranger Things final season will fail to live up to expectations, Duffer bros will get the same reputation as the nunces from Game of Thrones, no one will care anymore 2 months later. Netflix's death gurgle will commence. Depp will do well for a year, then have a Winehouse moment and end up with an obit on the front cover of a digital ad. Sam Smith will drop the they/them act and return to crooning form. It won't be received well.

by Anonymousreply 63November 26, 2022 3:11 AM

[R58] With the brain damage she already has, if she ODs again, I doubt there will be a recovery this time around.

by Anonymousreply 64November 26, 2022 3:12 AM

Misses Mendez will either come out or have a full scale mental breakdown and get himself canceled beyond repair. Live free queen

Lea Michele will be given another plum Barbra Streisand musical role to play on Broadway when she appears in the first stage version of "Yentl." It will be another monster hit. On opening night, people will commit suicide in raptures when she finishes singing "Papa, Can You Hear me?" because nothing ever could possibly equal it--they would despair because their lives would be so empty after that. Tickets will be scalped for millions of dollars each.

Meanwhile, that same night, Beanie Feldstein would open at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater in suburban Minneapolis in the title role of a revival of Jerome Kern's "Leave It to Jane." Her performance would be termed by a local suburban reviewer as "perfectly adequate."

by Anonymousreply 67November 26, 2022 4:10 AM

I'm curious about the poster who said that the duffer brothers reputation will go downhill. Why?

by Anonymousreply 68November 26, 2022 4:26 AM
