The ugliest models ever?

Can be from any/all eras and for both men and women...

by Anonymousreply 136November 29, 2022 7:39 AM

Almost every one of 'em!

by Anonymousreply 1November 21, 2022 11:38 PM

Bella Hadid.

by Anonymousreply 2November 21, 2022 11:43 PM

A lot of high fashion models are ugly in every conventional sense. They are simply hired for being tall, striking and skinny. They usually deep set eyes, high cheekbones and clear skin and look unhealthy. They model for high-end brands and the focus in simply on the clothing not the person wearing it. Commercial models for mall and department store clothing and fragrances are usually prettier because they are targeting middle-class consumers who want to look at pretty people and feel hot if they buy the product.

[quote]Bella Hadid.

I agree, she's absolutely horrid. I cannot believe the amount of ad campaign work this horror-show gets!

Her entire ugly boring face is due to a plastic surgeon and not a very good one. There is nothing unique or interesting about this 'model'. Bella tried to look like Carla Bruni and has mostly failed, then again, Carla had an obvious nose job.

Bella looks more like Bela Lugosi than a true beauty!

I think most runway models are not conventionally good looking. You will never find a Miss whatever on the runway.

by Anonymousreply 27November 22, 2022 2:15 AM

What makes a woman conventionally beautiful like a lovely smile, expressive eyes, bountiful breasts and wide hips don't work for high fashion runway modeling where the clothes are the main focus.

[quote]You guys are not getting it. I worked in the fashion industry. Successful runway models are not supposed to be sex kittens. The real professionals are tall gaunt thin no breasts unassuming - even homely - clothes hangers. The point is the fashion, the clothes, not what's underneath.

No, YOU don't get it. No one said fashion models should have curves like Victoria's Secret models, but the models of the 50s, 60 and 70s were much better looking and more charismatic than today's dour walking clothes hangers. Even today's editorial models are not even all that attractive. Karlie Kloss, don't think she's model much anymore, but she looks like a cross between a giant spider and an alien, the Hadid sisters are boring and smug looking.

Most of the others who do editorial layouts aren't very distinctive. There is one tall Chinese model, Liu Wen, who is very unique and pretty, but I cannot name many of today's fashion models because few make any sort of impact. In my field, advertising, I've always thought it was extremely important to use a distinctive model for specific ad campaigns. Today, brands keep using the same dull handful of models, especially those creepy Hadid sisters. You have to wonder if their family has some really awful dirt on fashion executives, because neither is much of a model. Bella's face was created in a plastic surgeon's operating room.

The nepotism models like Kaia Gerber leave me cold, plus she looks ill. A young woman with such dark circles under her eyes? She's obviously starving.

Years ago, models were more attractive, if not super gorgeous, they had a certain' it' factor, they were charismatic and were more unique. Say what you will about Penelope Tree, but she was a very famous in-demand model, as was Jean Shrimpton. Penelope was a British/American who found fame in the UK and Europe. Her mother was the American socialite and activist, Marietta Peabody Tree. Her parents were against her modeling but Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon and David Bailey loved her look and made her a supermodel of that era.

Back then, not only did the same models do fashion magazine editorial layouts and ad campaigns, the same models also did runway. Their look was desirable across the board. Not at all today. For example, Jean Shrimpton was one of the faces of Yardley makeup, she was also frequently featured in VOGUE, in both editorial layouts and on their covers.

by Anonymousreply 60November 23, 2022 1:21 AM

Tyra Banks shouldn't even be on the fashion model list, because she was never an actual high fashion model. To begin with, her tits are fake and she eventually got a nose job. I don't recall Tyra ever doing editorial layouts.

Neither were Cheryl Tiegs and Kathy Ireland ever considered high fashion models. They were both known for their swimsuit modeling.

IIRC, Cheryl started as a catalog model.

Kirsten Owen looks trans, what an ugly woman.

by Anonymousreply 62November 23, 2022 2:30 AM

Yeah, Tyra is definitely not high fashion. I think she only walked runways for a brief time as a teen (which she exaggerates her fame). She did gain weight and had plastic surgery as well. She was smart though to go into commercial modeling and pursue Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated very early on. And straight men definitely found her hot in the 90s and 2000s. But she was never close to Naomi or Cindy or Linda level on stardom, no matter how much she lies to herself.

[quote]Sandra Bernard. Not attractive at all!

Again, NOT a model. Sandra is known as a comedian and an actress. She's never been known as a fashion model.

A comedian and an actress posing for a few fashion spreads doesn't make them a model.

by Anonymousreply 102November 24, 2022 2:17 AM

[quote]Models are blank canvases upon which to present clothes and makeup.

Not true at all, especially the gorgeous easily recognizable models who are used for major brand ad campaigns. You know little about modeling. Runway models can be clones, but not the types of fashion models used for major ad campaigns and editorial fashion layouts.

Models are used to sell something the public thinks is fabulous, things they desire, such as an expensive perfume or a makeup line. The fantasy is about the women looking at the ads thinking they too can be as desirable and sophisticated as the models they are looking at in those ads as well as fashion magazine editorials.

Models for important ad campaigns are especially chosen for their 'it' factor and their desirability, not to be any sort of blank canvas.

by Anonymousreply 103November 24, 2022 2:29 AM

What women and gay men think is the desirable female form is not the same as what straight men or lesbians think. I noticed female and gay artists prefer tall, elongated women with sharp cheekbones, wide set almond eyes and thin features like a long nose and wide lips. Straight male artists prefer shorter women with big eyes, small noses and full lips and big breasts, wide hips and small feet.

by Anonymousreply 104November 24, 2022 2:42 AM

Since fashion targets straight women most of all it panders to what women find appealing. So the elongated powerful looking diva with an icy stare is what they'll push. It isn't the ideal to straight men but straight men are not buying these fashion brands, so their opinion is moot.

by Anonymousreply 105November 24, 2022 2:47 AM

Straight men probably prefer the bodies of Victoria's Secret and the SI Swimsuit models, on the other hand, most of those models don't pose for high fashion ads and fashion magazines. A completely different body type is required for high fashion.

I've noticed straight men sometimes don't even care about a woman's face, as long as she has a 'hot' body.

Super models such as Linda E and Naomi C changed things in high fashion, while still tall and slim, they also had curves. However, their main selling point, their faces.

by Anonymousreply 106November 24, 2022 3:37 AM

Naomi had straight male admirers. She was the perfect balance and appealed to both demographics.

by Anonymousreply 107November 24, 2022 3:43 AM

Kate Upton, Tyra Banks, Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley and Kathy Ireland were for straight men to jack off over. All of them are conventionally pretty and attractive. Just not in a high fashion way. Men don't care for high fashion models usually, only women and gays. And only really Tom Brady and Leonardo DiCaprio thought Gisele Bundchen with her hatchet face was hot.

by Anonymousreply 108November 24, 2022 3:50 AM

[quote] Not true at all, especially the gorgeous easily recognizable models who are used for major brand ad campaigns. You know little about modeling. Runway models can be clones, but not the types of fashion models used for major ad campaigns and editorial fashion layouts.

r103 Apples & Oranges. You're referring to actors who appear in commercial ads for everything from soda pop to fast food joints.

This thread is about fashion models. New designs are introduced at runway shows. This is what moves the fashion industry, not some hot blonde eating a Big Mac.

Yes, fashion models are blank canvases, cold and austere. Haute class! We're not talking about selling junk food to 10-year-olds.

by Anonymousreply 109November 24, 2022 3:53 AM

A select few models who walked the runway and had magazine covers - also landed multi million dollar BIG beauty contracts. That's a supermodel and none of them were ugly. And few of them were generic either.

So many of the models posted here ARE ugly or unattractive. None of us are so stupid not to understand that the fashion industry likes freaks. But it celebrates beauty more. Always.

Most famous models fall in between. Gia Garagemi looked like a Sears Catalogue model. Meh.

WTF are you going on about?

You must be referring to today's bland faceless runway models. I'm talking about the eras when the general public could easily recognize fashion models. That certainly did happen in the 1960s, 70s, 80 and 90s. Models such as Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Marisa Berenson, right on to the Supermodels of the 1980s to 1990s. Even earlier, people knew who the gorgeous Suzi Parker was!

Do you who Dovima was? Dovima's iconic 1955 photo, posing with elephants dressed in a Dior gown, was taken by Avedon, this photo is in the MOMA.

How sad you are this clueless. Dear, you are not teaching me anything, I work in advertising, in fashion and music. I know the history of the fields I work in.

Why the fuck are you going on about actors modeling for fashion brands?! Who mentioned celebrities?! Yes, that happens TODAY, celebrities are used in print ads and in fashion magazines, but this thread isn't about them. It's about most fashion models being recognizable, if not these days, but in the past. Today we have nepotism models, such as the Hadid sisters, Kai Gerber and Kendal Jenner.

In the past, celebs rarely were the face of fashion brands. Again, you don't know WTF you are talking about.

Do you even know what a 'fit' model is? They are as faceless as most of today's runway models. They are un-known models fashion designers use to size their clothing.

You need to do some deep research before lecturing anyone about the world of fashion models.

Because he had a body that garments draped perfectly on. The same reason all models are models. I've always thought that unless someone is hideously ugly most anyone can be a model if they've got the body for it and can learn how to pose.
