During Twitter's 15+ years of history, it has posted a net loss every year except 2018 and 2019. Elon Musk is a shrewd businessman, he will not waste money on a business venture which doesn't make money for him, he has little to no patience for another 10 years to see thing turning around, so if the business doesn't get any better soon, he will kill it, or most likely sell it to recoup some loss.
How long do you think Elon Musk will shut down Twitter or sell it?

Twitter suspended The Babylon Bee’s account March 22, after labeling a post about transgender Biden administration official Rachel Levine as hateful content. Not long afterward, billionaire Elon Musk, a fan of the site, got a text from his former wife, Talulah Jane Riley.
“The Babylon Bee got suspension is crazy!” read the text, which was made public earlier this year. “Why has everyone become so puritanical?” Then Riley suggested Musk buy Twitter and either delete it or “make it radically free-speech.”

So he can turn it into a money maker. He's starting now by laying off all these people. It just doesn't need this manpower to function. He wants to sell accounts with added functions like videos.
Twitter was losing $120 million per month. That's $4 million per day. Everyone somehow thinks those people knew how to run a business when they clearly didn't.
Like when they freaked out that the payroll division was gone. Well Musk has multiple large companies which provide redundancies. One of them can handle payroll. Too many people - almost everyone trashing this - has no idea how to run a company and make it profitable.
I'm willing to wait to see what happens. But carry on with the screeching.

He allows hateful Trump and Kanye right back on but me and a few others I know have not been given any chance by the (fake) Twitter appeals board to speak out truth about why we deserve another chance. I never used racist or hateful comments yet I did point out numerous blinders during the Trump tenure and got kicked off then my new account I spoke out about Kid Rock being a hypocrite (his own lyrics came back to bite him in the ass) and immediately got permanently suspended! I used the usual #MAGAMoron tending hashtag but I was on their radar and EWlon Musky immediately sic the right wing hounds on me! So much for “free speech”. So now I’ve appealed 10x and no one’s responded. It’s a joke!

R10 True, but read the report from August, Elon made the deal based on the calculation that he can turn things around and make money from Twitter, which by the way could be a very profitable platform for advertisers for business like Tesla or Space X. But Twitter accidentally became a town square, if you ask me, Elon Musk detested that and he wants to rid the public discourse, and focus on business side. However he was misled by the fake numbers and financial prospects, his initial assessment was way off, and it has become clear it would take a lot more years and investment for him to make any money from Twitter, he wanted out!

by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 21, 2022 12:39 AM |
oh please, no one is going to waste 44 billion or even 1 billion just to fuck with something they don't like. Elon might be a dickhead, but what he has done in the last two weeks is not "destroy it", he is cutting the expense, the 50% workforce layoff is extreme, but in his mind, Twitter is online/digital platform, it doesn't need that much workforce for it to run or maintain.
But there is one thing Elon might want to destroy, the elitist tech job! To him, IT job/software engineers are no different from assembly workers in Tesla factory, forget the remote work, put on your work uniform and work 10 hours a day, that's his message! If his plan works out at Twitter, we might see a change in silicon valley too, the aura/elitism around tech job will be gone, you are just a worker in a virtual factory.

Unlike blue collar workers forced to work at the local plant, these people can & do get a job almost anywhere. If they leave Twitter, there any number of companies willing to hire SW engineers. A pay cut may be involved, but these people don't have to dance to Musk's tune.
I guess the real barometer is what advertisers do. Musk no doubt thinks he's the Man of People, re-instituting Trump, but if Twitter (now without a safety net) becomes a home (even more than it already is) becomes a home for racists, pervs & loons, advertisers will have no choice but to take their advertising $$ elsewhere.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 21, 2022 11:45 AM |
R38 Elon is the first one and currently the only one in the tech world that issued the harsh mandate, like you said, twitter employees don't have to stay, they have no trouble finding a new job in another tech company FOR NOW, but things can change, Elon initiated a different work culture unheard of in the tech world, you think other companies are not watching closely? If Elon's plan works out, you bet others will soon follow, tech job will be fundamentally changed, and Elon will be the one that changed it!
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 21, 2022 12:04 PM |
I'm not sure who'd want to buy it.
He is a shrewd businessman normally, but his decisions so far have confused me. I get he's trying to decrease expenditure on staff by getting rid of the deadwood, but how is he going to attract advertisers back when he's unbanning people like Trump, Kanye, Andrew Tate etc?
I also don't see Twitter Blue as being a long term success. Lots of people signed up initially as it's a new thing to have a blue checkmark by your name, but how long before the excitement wanes? Most people are trying to reduce expenditure and Twitter Blue would surely be one of the first things to cut (before other non-essentials like Netflix and other subscriptions).
Added to that, the internet is constantly innovating and changing. Nothing lasts forever and Twitter is clearly in decline, while Tik Tok takes over. I suppose he must have some big plans to transform Twitter beyond what it is now to turn it into a profit making business, but I can't see it yet.

Well, you're right R39, he is trying to change the tech work culture and I suppose there are a lot of companies that would like to instill some discipline with their highly (over) paid, hothouse flower tech workforce, but I don't know how you put that genie back in the bottle. Time will tell, but as others noted on this & other threads, it's hard to see how insulting your workforce/treating them with contempt inspires them to do anything but go elsewhere.
I work as a government contractor & I get that kind of contempt occasionally in our ranks: people who came up from blue collar jobs to management have disdain for those uppity college types who go everything handed to them - forgetting that without uppity college types & educated professionals, there wouldn't be a contract with the government because that's what they require these days. That kind of attitude does nothing but breed ill-will, not change a culture

It's not Twitter's users that are melting, I'm sure everyone you follow is fine -- it's the software that's breaking down. And maybe the hardware as well if they don't find some people to keep an eye on their data centers pretty soon. They went from a staff of 8000 to roughly 285 in the last couple weeks. The entire engineering team has quit. The website is probably not going to be functional much longer.

I honestly don’t think he will. To make $1 billion in revenue all he needs is approximately 10.5 million Twitter blue users. That’s not that high a bar. Sadly, I am seeing even people I used to follow who fancied themselves “resisters” with a twitter blue check. He's cut costs--it was a very bloated operation--and at least as importantly has some smartypants from his other companies in as managers as well as some hax0r contractors doing some bits and bobs on the software side. All that plus the fact that people's threats to leave Twitter are 99% of the time empty promises, meaning that he'll maintain a strong userbase = a good shot of success.

If they didn't come back, they would be paid till January, now it ended in November!

by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 28, 2022 6:51 AM |
R77 unfortunately I don't think you can win that if you sue, since the company hired you back, you would have to give up the severance pay...unless you can prove the entire "rehire" is a sham to avoid the 3 month severance pay for everyone, but there are two issues here, one is the rehiring was voluntary, you didn't have to come back, the second is, not everyone was fired again, but IRCC close to 1/3 or 1/2 was let go.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | November 29, 2022 9:01 AM |
“Free Speech” in the First Amendment applies to the government not arresting you for saying something offensive. It has nothing to do with private companies having TOS.
Elon’s claim that allowing racists to say “I hate n******” on his website must be allowed is ridiculous. Sure Elon, allow it. And then watch every advertiser in America exercise their Free Speech rights to get the hell out of there and take their money with them. “Free Speech” is not “Free from Consequences” and it never has been.
Elon’s not even American, he doesn’t even know what Free Speech means in America. And he’s from South Africa, hardly a bastion of civility. And he’s rich and white from South Africa, what makes you think he is capable of respecting anyone or anything? He has no standards, he’s just posturing. Allowing this racist stuff is probably fine with him because he comes from a racist country where nobody (white) cares about people making horrifically racist statements. It’s probably normal there. And that’s what’s wrong with allowing foreigners to own American social media. Or media in general, look at Rupert Murdoch. Another person who came to America to burn it down.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | November 30, 2022 6:51 AM |
This is amazingly petty. Platformer says that when Twitter Blue paid subscriptions are re-released, Elon may not make it available on Apple's iOS app because he doesn't want Apple specifically to get their 30% cut. Even though 30% is standard for pretty much all app stores - it's the same for Google Play (Android) for example.
The new subscription price will also be $8 and not $7.99, and will require phone verification.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | November 30, 2022 7:08 AM |
Should add that the 30% applies if the app gets more than $1m sales a year, otherwise it's 15%.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | November 30, 2022 7:09 AM |
^ I don't get why that 30% is such a big deal. Walk into any retail store and mark-ups usually start at a 100% for full retail then work their way back in the form of sales and discount. I would think that any developer would jump at the chance for the kind of exposure the Apple store gives an app. Elmo sells the Full Self-Driving option on his cars for $15,000 and then shuts it off when the owner re-sells the car forcing the new owner to pay another $15,000 if he wants the option. Talk about a screw job 😠

8 million sign ups at Mastodon. Liberal voices are leaving Twitter. So how long before Twitter becomes just an upgraded Parler?
I wish all the liberals would just leave Twitter and let Musk and his Right Wing fanboys play with themselves.

Musk did not change the tech field. WFH is still prevelant. If he wants the best people he has to let them work where they want to.

[quote]Why does a shrewd businessperson purchase a failing business
Possible answers:
1. He never intended to buy it and tried to get out of the deal, but couldn't.
2. He believed he could turn it around and make money.
3. You are conflating what Twitter's "business" is with what it's assets are or where "value" is generated. The LBOs of the 80s proved that many companies pieces are worth more than the sum of them combined.
4. You are assuming that generating money from Twitter is his endgame, rather than something else. Even if he loses his entire investment in Twitter, he's still the richest person in the world by about $50-ish billion - and amount that would rank a person the 25th riches person in the world.

Not Bezos - he's slipped to number four behind Musk, Arnault (LVMH) and Adani.
Putin probably is richer, but no one will ever know for certain unless the next government seizes all of his assets after he dies and reveals it. Whle they might seize it all, they'd never reveal how much he's stolen.

Twitter is just Elon Musk unfiltered, acting on impulse. I remember reading that at Tesla and his other companies there are layers of management who basically "manage" Elon Musk -- keep him from making a fool of himself and letting him take the credit for everybody else's work. Elon bought Twitter on impulse, then tried to get out of it, then fired everybody there and thought he could run it all himself, with disastrous results. I don't think Twitter will suddenly die, just dwindle away. What IS dying is Elon's reputation as a businessman. Nobody in their right mind would want to partner with him in a business deal after seeing his antics with Twitter.

Liberal Voices are being silenced at Twitter. Musk taking advice from Far Right accounts like Andy Ngo and CatTurd. Ngo gave Musk a list of accounts he wanted suspended and without even investigating it, Musk had their accounts immediately suspended.
It's becoming an upgraded Parler and echo chamber for the Right and for Fascists.

At a recent Harvard Business School summit of CEOs, 99% of them said that Elon overpaid for Twitter. Think about that for a moment: you can't get 99% of any group to agree on what day of the week it is, and yet that's what they said. I guess the question is did Elon attend and be the sole vote to say he didn't overpay (despite saying himself that he overpaid)? That's the only scenario in which I can see 1% thinking this wasn't the biggest business blunder of the century.
59% of this group of CEOs also said that advertisers should pull all advertising despite many of those CEOs hypocritically still advertising on Twitter. Had I been invited to this rarified-air summit, I would have told them don't worry, Elon will alienate 99% of his remaining advertisers soon enough, and MyPillow can't single-handedly keel both FOX and Twitter afloat.

The reporters and journalists are the backbone of Twitter. There isn't a place you can get updated news in a second. But if he continues on this spiral, journalists and any news organizations worth their integrity should just leave. Let the Far Right have Twitter. It becomes obsolete and useless to advertisers who do not want their ads posted next to a Q-Anon post.
Entertainment and celebrities also use Twitter. Do they want their PR be in a site that has now become an upgraded Parler?
Mastodon has its quirks and I'm still confused how to navigate it but I am hoping some ex-Twitter engineers fired by Musk can make the site more user-friendly. In the meantime, Congress needs to push a law about Social Media sites. SM Apps should not be in control by one person, it's too dangerous.

Twitter did not accidentally become a town square, it grew. When I first began visiting the platform, people would post they had no idea what they were doing with Twitter.
Twitter grew into its purpose and usefulness.
The operator didn't make money from the platform, so it was considered a failure despite it's usefulness.
When offered a purchase price significantly higher than its value, the operator jumped at the offer and you would do the same.

I've just found out a sadly hilarious aspect to Musk's attempt to destroy Twitter. His 2 times ex wife Tallulah Riley (the one ex who he still seems to be on good terms with and they still meet up with regularly when he's in the UK and she's a right wing nutjob) encouraged him to buy Twitter because BabylonBee got suspended to "fight wokeism" and "maybe delete it" just got engaged to Thomas Brodie-Sangster that baby faced guy from Love Actually and the Maze Runner, and Musk responded to their engagement announcement on twitter within 5 minutes. Meaning likely this entire thing is Musk trying to please his ex who just announced she's getting married to a baby faced twink 4 years younger than her. Also she signs of her messages with x's...
by Anonymous | reply 132 | July 29, 2023 7:19 AM |
r132 I heard that story before. I think he mentioned on Rogan's podcast he might buy Twitter even before that Riley thing, but I'm sure it played a part as well. The most shocking thing here is Thomas Brodie-Sangster nabbing Elon's two-times right-winger ex, eugh.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | July 29, 2023 7:35 AM |
r133 Yeah I'm pretty surprised he's a right winger. I'd normally cut him some slack and say she's not terrible looking, and is worth $44 million. But the more I've read about her it seems more on the actual you'd have to buy into her lunacy to put up with her side of things.
