[quote]I was wondering if she had an opinion about Elon, but she’s actually making up blind items about herself. Busy woman.
She did write an article on her The Audacity page (rofl!) about why she is staying on Twitter and what Twitter means to her, etc. It isn't free, so you can only see the first part, and it rambles on and on about nothing, so I wouldn't say it would be worth buying to read the rest. It did make me laugh though about how she complains in the beginning about how terrible and awful other people have been to her on there, all the unsolicited advice! But then just casually says: "Oh yeah, sometimes I'm not my best self on there too", and completely minimises how awful her behaviour has been on there too.
Actually, here's an excerpt:
[quote]I don’t have many regrets about my time on Twitter. Certainly, I’ve said some stupid things that were, mostly jokes, bad jokes to be clear, but fairly harmless. I’ve shared some unfortunate opinions that I no longer have. I made a few mistakes and Lord knows haters have gleefully reminded me of those mistakes from twelve or ten or seven years ago, every chance they get. It’s fine. I have no problem taking responsibility for both the good and not so good I’ve said. I have dealt with breathtaking cruelty and stupidity from trolls. I have been aggravated to no end by pedantry and unsolicited advice.

Those comments on R15's link are really interesting - a whole lot of people talking about their horrible interactions with her:
[quote]I met her in person and she was just as rude as she comes across online.
[quote]She’s one of the most unpleasant people I’ve ever come across on Twitter. She’s perpetually annoyed with everything and everyone. If she brings a topic up and people have the audacity to comment on it at all she gets pissy and blocks them. I never understand the people who fan all over her. She’ll just snip at most of them for nothing.
[quote]When I was a college student working for our campus newspaper, she took aim at me for a bit. That was…not fun lol
[quote]She comes from a wealthy family. I think her dad is some kind of big-time developer in Haiti? Born on third base and acts like it.

Haha, true! And the tone of her voice is constantly exhausted as well. What a choice. I laughed so much when I was listening to a podcast recently, on the new Queer as Folk, I think, and Roxane was the guest. The host says, excitedly: "Hey Roxane, welcome to the podcast, how are you?" and it is followed by a beat and the Roxane just: "Siiiiiiiiiigh." She's a parody of herself and doesn't even know it!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 18, 2022 9:23 PM |
So many people just take her shit online, but one person who bit back did make me laugh when she told Roxane basically: "You're a 40+ year old woman with a nemesis. Grow up." Haha. I think not long after that Roxane wrote her article on why having a nemesis is, like, so important and healthy!

Roxane Gay can be really mean on Twitter and she is always deleting her tweets to hide the evidence. Having said that, I've read all her books because I have no life and I read everything. First of all, her family wasn't "rich." Her father was a Haitian immigrant who was a successful civil engineer and the family moved several times for him to be a consultant on job sites. I think upper-middle class would be a good descriptor.
When Roxane was 12 years old she had a crush on a boy in her middle school and used to make out with him. You fat-shamers should know she was very thin at the time. The boy took her to a cabin in the woods where he and all his friends gang raped her. I repeat; she was twelve. She did not tell anyone what happened at the time, but her family knew something was off an pooled their resources to send her to a top-tier East Coast prep school where she gained a ton of weight and was bullied. She went on to an Ivy League school and ended up dropping out and if you want to know more read her books.
My point is that sure, she's a twitter troll. And yeah, she didn't grow up poor. And it's easy to make fun of how big she is, but if you read her books you'll see it she started eating compulsively after being gang-raped because she thought it would protect her from further sexual aggression. I mean, I'm not even really a fan, but she has been through some shit.
Also, the one thing I agree with her about is that I do not respect Lena Dunham. She's a fucking clown.

No, a body that big is genetic.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 19, 2022 5:58 AM |
No it's not genetic her entire family is thin. But some of you just can't fathom that sexual assault would be unwelcome and that overeating would be a response in a very young girl. And nothing I can say will make you a whole person with compassion so just keep scrolling and hating.

Roxanne is an absolute master of hedging her stance so that no shit splats back on her with her remarks and diatribes. She stays a media darling and constant in a shifting, fickle industry where others are cancelled overnight and dashed among the changing tides of perception of what is wrong and what is right. If she was in finance she’d be a billionaire.
While I admire her game, the truth is the books and publicity are making her a very wealthy woman, and in the process, is changing and weakening her arguments and diluting her original voice. I call it the “Mary J Blige Syndrome”.
How can you argue how hard you have it if you’re wealthy? Where on Earth do you get new material?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 19, 2022 6:50 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 19, 2022 7:01 AM |
R55 - that story is horrific, and is why I would never make fun of her weight - not that I really would anyway. She has my sympathy there, no buts. Seriously, I don't blame her if she's angry, doesn't trust men etc.
It's also an explanation, but not an excuse for her terrible behaviour to others. She needs therapy or something. She's actually mentioned before that her wife has had serious chats with her over her Twitter addiction and behaviour but she can't stop.
My best friend was raped by priests at his school, beginning age 5. He's a lovely guy who treats everyone so kindly because he knows what it's like to be abused. Another friend of mine grew up under the Khmer Rouge, watched his teachers get shot in front of him, and has shrapnel permanently in his body. Also a really lovely guy. They would both say the same: it doesn't excuse treating other people badly.
[quote]Roxanne is an absolute master of hedging her stance so that no shit splats back on her with her remarks and diatribes.
This is very true. If you read her articles, they often say a whole lot of nothing, because she never really commits to anything fully, while still getting her digs in.

She absolutely has, and I think we all get that, with the exception of the DLers who come here for no reason than to be nasty cunts. The thing is, she's unnecessarily mean, critical, and rude to a lot of people who don't deserve it, and "she's been through some shit" only goes so far in explaining it. She takes annoyances as offenses, and is always saying and doing things on Twitter that basically boil down to loyalty tests, and if you disagree with her, you don't pass, you not only can't be trusted but you're also awful, and she's going to sic her fans on you.
Again, I get why she would be that way after the childhood she had, but she's turned it into a career and it's become weaponized, and she sometimes goes so far that she's dealing out the kind of hurt she is supposedly still trying to heal from.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 19, 2022 9:26 AM |
When are we going to talk about her wife, Debbie Millman? From what I can tell she's built this whole career in which she's supposed to be some sort of big "Design Expert" but the only output I've ever seen from her is stupid sayings scrawled in childish handwriting. I'm not kidding... look it up. She's the human personification of a fucking Gather sign on a low-rent dining room wall. She's a walking, talking, 14K gold-filled, live-love-laugh necklace from the Walmart jewelry clearance table. Prove me wrong.
And fun fact. She noticed Roxane on Twitter and STALKED her. She asked mutual friends to set them up and eventually it all came together. And their combined wealth has made them rich as fuck. They have a massive townhouse in Manhattan and a place in LA and both are big art collectors.

R70, you're probably right. I may be trying too hard to see the good in people who don't really deserve it? I do sometimes think she has her heart in the right place, but maybe she is just one of these people who use social justice as a stick to beat others with/a tool to feel superior over? I dunno. She's definitely behaved like a right cow on more than one occasion, and the people she's done that to do not deserve it.
I will never forget the time she sicced her followers onto a well meaning vet who tried to give her some advice about why her dog wasn't eating properly. That was pretty mean - and also hilarious because WHO DOES THAT? Well, I suppose the answer to that is her pal Tressie McMillan-Cottom who sicced HER followers onto a guy who privately dm'd her once to let her know that in a photo she had put up she had inadvertently put some information that would identify where she lived and he wanted her to be safe.

Glad to read your review of the Brandon Taylor novel, r87. I think it's called "Real Life"? I picked up a copy in paperback and read the first couple pages, it felt so drab and depressing that I put it down and shoved it to the back of my unread book shelf. I should probably just get read of it. I also had to unfollow him on Twitter, just a constant, constant stream of trivialities. Then again most novelists are terrible on Twitter, even ones whose books I've liked.

Ugh, I read Brandon Taylor’s short story collection and despite accolades they left me wanting. There was actually a nice little novella in there that could have been great, but it was broken up and infiltrated with lackluster material. Two other gay authors of color had short story collections released last year that were far superior and didn’t get the press his book did. And one of them even died before the book release, so there was an emotional hook. Anyways, I don’t think I’m picking up the novel.

How do you make money being a Twitter troll? It’s not a career.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | November 19, 2022 6:26 PM |
R105 Well, it won’t be if Elon continues to have his way.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | November 19, 2022 6:34 PM |
I've never understood, these past couple years, why we are supposed to care when someone proclaims that some incident or post makes them "exhausted".
by Anonymous | reply 107 | November 19, 2022 6:34 PM |
R107 You're supposed to drop what you're doing and attend to their needs like a nursemaid, for fear of being labeled immoral and having your career and social reputation ruined.

Is she being poetic? She's a writer, right?
Maybe it's Barbie. Barbie's an actress, Barbie's had almost every job.
I could see Roxane being preyed on by the post-modern consumerism and white supremacist heteronormative domesticity of her nemesis... Barbie.

Well, ironically, the myth that Rosa Parks was tired and just desperate to get off her feet and needed a seat and that’s why she sat where she did has been perpetuated ad nauseam, despite the fact what she did was very calculated and planned. That narrative has always undermined the importance of her launching the movement. She wasn’t even the first one, but that young lady was an unmarried pregnant teen and they were worried that it would reflect badly on the Black community to put her forward for the lawsuit, so Parks, who had been working with them all along staged the action to get arrested.

Who cares? Roxane Gay is a bitch and not a particularly good thinker or writer.

[quote]Who cares? Roxane Gay is a bitch and not a particularly good thinker or writer.
Very true. I remember that video where she was solemnly reading from her book as though it was a great piece of writing. The quote?
"My body is a cage. My body is a cage of my own making."
That... is not at all impressive.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | November 19, 2022 7:12 PM |
I have read her nonfiction, which is thought-provoking. Tried to read her fiction but couldn’t get into it. Brandon used to be a sweetheart on Twitter, I liked him a lot, but as he’s become better known (to people who follow writers, at least) he’s been...well, exhausting.
When Roxane described her nemesis the other day, Gabrielle Union came to mind, and I didn’t even know they went to the same school. I think it’s her.

I notice she's in the NYTimes less and less often, and seems overall to have a small media presence?
Are we ever going to get rid of her for good? (<--You notice I do not word that as, "Will we ever see the end of her?")
by Anonymous | reply 116 | November 19, 2022 9:28 PM |
Fuck you, Roxane.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | November 19, 2022 9:31 PM |
R116, I was about to say, there was a time she was EVERYWHERE. People were asking her opinions on every little thing. Lately she's gone much quieter. Even this thread is the first Roxane thread on here for awhile. I think she's squandered a lot of her initial goodwill generally.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | November 19, 2022 9:43 PM |
R103 Brandon Taylor (who I will not call anything other than Big Tyler ever again, thank you r81) and Roxane are easily the two most miserable people on Twitter. They’ve perfected the art of weaponizing their shitty personalities, objectively piss poor writing (I challenge you to define any meaning from a single paragraph he’s ever written), and identities so that they can act out their sad personality disorders on display 280 characters at a time.
They’re both jokes in publishing, but are fat, Black, and queer and won’t let anyone who dares point out their ridiculous behavior forget. As a Black person, I’m doubly enraged by their idiotic performances. There are far more talented writers who aren’t shitty people to whom so much attention could be paid if they weren’t sucking it all up.

How do people like Brandon make a living? Whatever he got from publishing a niche book a couple of years ago doesn’t pay the rent now.

I appreciate the fact that she has had difficulties in life. That is all the more reason for her to retire from public life. She writes poorly about nonsense, and being in the public eye seems difficult for her. She’s talentless and vulnerable. She needs to withdraw from the world for her benefit and ours.

Her Work Friend advice is sometimes dangerously bad. Like, I hope people don't follow it if they want to keep their jobs!

[quote]Her Work Friend advice is sometimes dangerously bad
I remember she got a lot of negative comments on her first column and it has continued since then.
Someone from the NYT should write to her, 'Dear Roxane, I work with an exhausting lesbian who is terrible at her job...'
by Anonymous | reply 125 | November 20, 2022 9:53 AM |
There is a movement where people are exhausted from hearing about everything she’s exhausted about.
Her tone is always of a haughty school marm. My own mother had this irritating way of narrating just like Roxane, as though you need to be taught from zero and she’s narrating a National Geographic special.
It’s debasing, unmotivated and makes people feel powerless.

[quote] St. Narcissus, pray for our omniscient, ever-suffering guardian of culture, Roxane on what looks and feels like her 97th birthday.
St. Edema, pray for Roxane’s ankles, knees and her thighs, that they may continue to support the literal weight of all her suffering that she so bravely wears in public for all to see and yet no one dare to judge.
St. Lane Bryant, pray for Roxane’s self-induced, voluminous rolls of fat which are the armor she bravely wears to fight the world’s never ending battles. Battles that are partially real, partially invented, but mostly none of her fucking business but she inserts herself into them anyway. Also, pray for the inner thighs of all her jeans that they don’t spontaneous combust as she waddles across the stage to the craft table after her another lecture on what we are all doing wrong.
St. Acanthosis Nigricans, pray for Roxane’s face, that she may eternally frown and roll her eyes in exasperation at the world’s sins.
St. Vagisil and St. Massengil, I don’t have to remind you of your duties. Just keep on keeping on.
In the name of Roxane Gay, amen, and pass the ice cream.

R125, not too long ago, someone actually called her out on Twitter, something like: "Have you ever actually worked in an office?" or something like that. She was like: "Yes, all my life!" in this very defensive way. It was pretty amusing.
R126, you put that perfectly. God, can you imagine being one of her students?

R113 they didn’t go to school together. Gabrielle Union moved away from Nebraska when she was 8 and is 2 years older than Roxane.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | November 21, 2022 6:57 PM |
R68 I’ll go ahead and say if I grew up with her as very young children, yes, I would be attracted to hanging out with her because of her sharp wit and acerbic attitude, clever mind, and yeah, that she fights the fight of the marginalized. I can relate to her world view if not completely appreciate it.I grew up in a predominately white Boston suburb almost my entire school age with only two black students that moved into town in 10th grade.
But often I feel like all that intellect is roaring inside a stalled car sitting in a driveway sometimes. She needs to put Twitter away and work on a very sharp witted movie script. Somebody needs to lock her, Tyler Perry, and Jordan Peele in a room with a cheesecake (or two).
by Anonymous | reply 144 | November 21, 2022 9:28 PM |
R144 That's what I say. Many of these brilliant personalities have become addicted to Twitter and social media in general. Like all addictions, shit goes downhill and they turn negative.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | November 21, 2022 9:30 PM |
R146 that is precisely what is so amusing (and also irritating) about her. She somehow can turn the most pedestrian daily activity into a Twitter MOMENT. I don’t know who these moments are for, or who cares, but she keeps on trucking.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | November 23, 2022 12:18 PM |

He doesn't have his own thread, and probably doesn't deserve it, but fat, miserable misanthrope Brandon "Big Tyler" Taylor just went on an unhinged rant about The White Lotus, which he seems to hate because it's...popular (a recurring theme in his bipolar screeds). My absolute favorite part is where he, of the purplest and most hack-filled prose telling the absolute most cloying, vaporous stories, dares to suggest that TV wunderkind Mike White has a "fatally mediocre mind."
Brandon @blgtylr The show itself does not bother me because it is so evidently the work of a fatally mediocre mind, which is fine, but it’s the totally fabricated reception from the media class that I find enraging lol 12:00 PM · Dec 14, 2022
No one in publishing with any actual taste takes this clown seriously and honestly, get that bag, Big Tyler, but he has conflated his con job on the most insecure intellectual lightweights in the publishing industry with actual relevance. I'd feel sorry for him if he didn't have such a shitty personality.

I'm so glad you said this, because my experience of reading his tweets is thinking that this guy has the worst prose I've read in a long time.
I wonder what it's like to wake up every morning and think: "what am I going to be outraged by today?" I guess that's how he makes his money?
