I should say not!
Has there ever been a more beautiful woman than Vivian Vance in her prime?

yes, many

Of all the opportunities to include a poll with Vivian Vance as an option...
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 18, 2022 9:54 AM |
More like USDA prime.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 18, 2022 10:00 AM |
OP = Mary Wickes
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 18, 2022 10:35 PM |
Only Ethel Kennedy came close.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 21, 2022 10:20 AM |
She really was very beautiful
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 21, 2022 10:25 AM |
Let me think.

A young Deborah Kerr
The young Vanessa Regrave of the 1960s
And, fuck me, the greatest of them all: the young Julie Christie.

Viv's eyes were interesting, and her mouth and smile were beautiful.
But there's something about the length/shape of her face (a bit... horsey?) and her nose in particular that always kept her from being truly pretty.
I wonder if she'd ever looked into rhinoplasty, which was around in Hollywood since the talkies, at least.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 21, 2022 2:23 PM |
She had a lovely bustline and a winning smile.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 21, 2022 2:51 PM |
Viv had Bette Davis eyes.
(insert Kim Carnes sound here)

YES.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 21, 2022 4:11 PM |
r17 she actually had a facelift and rhinoplasty to fix the hump in her nose after her divorce from Phil Ober.
I think she knew she was no classic beauty and was also self-conscious about her appearance. That's probably why she resented the Ethel role. Also, she probably felt like shit about herself and was not inclined to do much with her appearance. She seemed to put more effort into it as she got older.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 21, 2022 5:43 PM |
Ethel Mae Potter - we never forgot 'er!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 21, 2022 5:47 PM |
"Beautiful" and "Vivian Vance" don't belong in the same sentence. Hell, in the same paragraph. I suppose she could have been passable if she hadn't been so clumsy and kept injuring her face by walking into doors and falling down the stairs.

Blondell wasn't too dissimilar from the type embodied by Joan and Constance Bennett, who were considered beauties in the 1930s: they had the packed but smooth tiny figures perfect for those slinky dresses, good bones, petite features, and beautiful skin.
Cagney, in his autobiography, mentioned taking note of Bennett's beautiful figure.
Blondell, however, got hard-looking and floozie-like quickly and ended up in those parts rather than the classier comedienne roles that the Bennett sisters got (although both landed some serious roles in films noir, as well).

I recently watched the 1939 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Charles Laughton in one of his most memorable performances, and a young Maureen O'Hara as Esmeralda. I was blown away by how gorgeous she was, and how clearly authentic her beauty was even in black and white. She was 18, it was her first Hollywood role, and it was Laughton who brought her over.

In the mid-1940s, around the time she had her breakdown
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 21, 2022 6:08 PM |
Viv looked better with longer hair. The short styles of the 1950s did her no favors.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 21, 2022 6:34 PM |
I don't know what it is, but there's something very off about her looks. I can't quite put my fist on it.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 21, 2022 6:51 PM |
You certainly had no problem spending my money, r30
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 21, 2022 6:53 PM |
Viv, now you know that's not true. I've always been very frugal with money. You, more than anyone else, should know how tight-fisted I am.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 21, 2022 7:14 PM |
Okay, I'll admit r32 made me laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 21, 2022 7:15 PM |
She aged better than Lucille, I'll give her that
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 21, 2022 9:57 PM |
^Lucille who?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 21, 2022 10:01 PM |
Lucille Méthé, Rose
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 21, 2022 10:05 PM |
Lucille 2.

That cunt Lucille LeSueur and her rotten peas.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 21, 2022 11:19 PM |
Never heard of this woman and she looks average to me so I would say no.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 21, 2022 11:21 PM |
R40 You've never heard of Vivian Vance?!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 21, 2022 11:22 PM |
r40 needs to turn in her gay card IMMEDIATELY
by Anonymous | reply 42 | November 21, 2022 11:32 PM |
Okay I just looked her up and saw she was in I Love Lucy with Lucille Ball who I do know. I'm 30 years old just for reference.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 21, 2022 11:50 PM |
She's no Mary Wickes.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 22, 2022 7:40 AM |
Who do so many people look middle aged in old high school pictures?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 22, 2022 10:28 AM |
Here she is in her 40s, easily looking like a woman in her 50s.
She looked better a decade later, when she actually was in her 50s.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 22, 2022 9:12 PM |
I'll say this about Vivian. She was a survivor. She learned to roll with the punches.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 23, 2022 2:44 AM |
r48 don't you have an ash heap of history to attend to?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 23, 2022 9:05 AM |
She could have a certain prettiness with the right camera angle and lighting but she was not a true beauty like Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Tierney, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 23, 2022 9:19 AM |
I knew Frawley was older than Viv. But TWENTY-TWO YEARS is a bit of a surprise. He was 64, she 42 when the show began. Lucy was also 42, and Desi 34. I also knew Desi was younger than Lucy.
It's no wonder Viv felt awful about the age difference. But they did work very well onscreen. I guess stardom and big salaries eventually helped.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 23, 2022 10:30 AM |
She looked matronly even at 42
by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 23, 2022 11:11 AM |
How did Vivian Vance become a DL idol in the first place?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 23, 2022 11:39 AM |
She was an insatiable bottom.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 23, 2022 11:47 AM |
r53 because she had a lovely bustline and a winning smile.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 23, 2022 2:43 PM |
r53, have you been to an oculist lately?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 23, 2022 2:47 PM |
Why did I read r55 as "because she had a busted smile"? Oh, the tricks the eyes sometimes play.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 23, 2022 2:55 PM |
Maybe if you'd spent more time on your acting career rather than making tasteless quips on DL, then you'd be remembered as something more than a two-bit supporting actor and wife beater, r57
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 23, 2022 4:27 PM |
r53 Vivian's last husband was the proto-DLer
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 23, 2022 11:54 PM |
While people remember Lucille and Desi fondly, Vivian has become a punchline.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 24, 2022 12:47 AM |
Don't you have a hooker-- bought and paid for with MY MONEY -- to rough up r60?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 24, 2022 12:53 AM |
I read Vivian's comment at r61 as "You have a great left hook." There go my eyes deceiving me again.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 24, 2022 12:58 AM |
^Yeah, she was a real knockout!!!
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 25, 2022 1:02 AM |
Only DL would have a Phil Ober troll.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 25, 2022 10:05 AM |
She was a fat whore, who didn't appreciate the sexual prowess of an older man.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 25, 2022 10:13 AM |
I'm 60 and look 30 and I've never heard f this women either.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | November 25, 2022 10:16 AM |
How can anyone post on DL for longer than 30 seconds and NOT know who Vivian Vance is?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 25, 2022 10:40 AM |
Why weren't you arrested more r64?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 25, 2022 2:34 PM |
gay men can't evaluate feminine beauty. she looks like one of your most hated enemies - a "T"
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 25, 2022 2:38 PM |
Because I wasn't cut out for the slammer, r69.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | November 25, 2022 2:44 PM |
... or theater, film, and television, r71
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 25, 2022 2:49 PM |
I assume r70 doesn't know who Vivian Vance is either
by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 25, 2022 3:55 PM |
Weren't we a lovely pairing? As a couple, we were unbeatable, until she found herself on a smash hit television series and decided she could blow me off.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 25, 2022 7:12 PM |
She looks good here. Her nose doesn't seem as objectionable.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 25, 2022 7:16 PM |
Can we give this woman a REST???????
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 25, 2022 7:49 PM |
r77, are you saying you've had sufficient?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | November 25, 2022 8:18 PM |
R77 But she really did have a certain something, don't you agree?
by Anonymous | reply 79 | November 25, 2022 10:35 PM |
r79 gets it
by Anonymous | reply 80 | November 25, 2022 11:39 PM |
R81 Renowned for her loveliness, yet so few know of her bravery and resilience.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | November 26, 2022 10:44 AM |
