I was just thinking about Hogan's Heroes and starting a thread about it and here Robert Clary just died. RIP, I love that show!
He outlived Hogan

He survived Auschwitz and had a long life. RIP

Was he gay?

He survived Hogan’s hogan

That’s a shame, he was the last cast member left, I believe. HH was a favorite when I was a kid, and I’m still fond of it as an adult. I watch it most weeknights on MeTV, it’s still very funny.

He was going to reprise his role of Pierre on Y&R for the 50th anniversary, which ruins the sl of Pierre faking his death and coming back to reveal he was Sharon's long lost father.

He wasn't gay, he was married to one of Eddie Cantor's five daughters. And his granddaughter confirmed his death.

I has shhhhex with him!

Everybody remembers Hogan's Heroes, but he was also in New Faces of 1954 with Eartha Kitt and Alice Ghostley.

Final season cast member Kenneth Washington is still breathing.

I loved the Cockroach on Hogan Heroes and watch it every day.

The movie, called simply "New Faces" (poster shown at R9), was based on the Broadway show "New Faces of 1952," which has a lot of wonderful numbers. Robert Clary did an impersonation of Johnnie Ray called "It's Raining Memories." He also did this song with Eartha.

Clary was a Holocaust survivor who went on to co-star in a sitcom about Nazis.

I hit post too quickly. I meant to add may he rest RIP.

Werner Klemperer was German and his father was Jewish. They immigrated here in 1933.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 16, 2022 11:54 PM |
Forgive me, Robert. I still screwed it up! May you rest in peace.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 16, 2022 11:56 PM |
Rest in war.
That's what I want to see some time.

He was the last of the main cast. Nita Talbot (Marya, the Russian spy) is still alive too.

96 was a good run. He outlived Bob Crane by 44 years.

We can probably assume that Bob Crane would have had a longer life if he hadn't gotten himself inconveniently murdered.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 17, 2022 12:53 AM |
R20. I forgot Nita was still around. She was absolutely brilliant, I think she won an Emmy for her portrayal of Marya.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 17, 2022 1:11 AM |
I've always loved Nita Talbot, in whatever show she shows up in.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 17, 2022 1:15 AM |
Very sad to think my friend, Robert LeClare, is gone.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 17, 2022 1:25 AM |
He did a "Fantasy Island" with Bert Convy, but no "Love Boat" or "Murder She Wrote."
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 17, 2022 1:32 AM |
He was the youngest of 14 children and all his family including himself at age 16 ended up in Auschwitz and he was the only one to survive.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 17, 2022 2:00 AM |
R27. Unimaginable what he survived. May he rest in peace.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 17, 2022 2:26 AM |
Who doesn't adore the fantabulous Miss Nita Talbot?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 17, 2022 2:33 AM |
He outlived Bob Crane by 44 years. But never fucked indiscriminately and video taped most of it. Different strokes for different folks.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 17, 2022 3:20 AM |
Bob Crane, now there is a story worth telling.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 17, 2022 3:32 AM |
Good Lord R27 I had no idea, how horrendous. I hope there’s an afterlife just so he can see his family again, how do you even survive something like that.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 17, 2022 3:44 AM |
R33
Robert Clary wasn't alone in that horrible fate. Scores if not hundreds of persons were only or one of few left surviving members of a r family, after Nazis got through with them.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 17, 2022 3:55 AM |
I know he was married, etc. -But I had always heard he was gay. A friend who used to live in WeHo told me about Clary being arrested for lewd conduct with another man in a public bathroom. But I'll defer to the experts here on DL. If that actually happened, someone here will surely know about it. Either way, he was a talented man who survived one of the worst times in human history.

Will Roddy McDowell's memoirs reveal the truth?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 17, 2022 4:07 AM |
McDowall - sorry, Roddy.

[quote]I know he was married, etc. -But I had always heard he was gay.
I heard the same thing years ago but have nothing specific to back it up.
[quote]Will Roddy McDowall's memoirs reveal the truth?
Maybe, if you don't mind waiting another 120 years for them to be released.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 17, 2022 7:32 AM |
Couldn't the HR have found a better picture?

. . .after the Nazis AND their European assistants/enablers got through with the Jews.

R35 Clary's arrest was a news item in the National Enquirer. Photo of the clip attached. In this case, it was taken from police-court records. Given the description of the location, I can tell it was the same infamous restroom located in Will Rogers Park in Beverly Hills where George would eventually get arrested. This was a pretty well-known place for such activity.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 12, 2023 8:47 AM |
The Wikipedia article for Clary suggests he married his wife - Eddie Cantor's daughter - after many years of them being the "best of friends." Sounds like a bearding situation to me.
In any case, his story is fascinating and heartbreaking. Sad that he lost so many family members.
(Reminded of him since his professional and real life friend Bill Hayes died)

LeBeau's nickname at Stalag 13 was "LeBlow Job."
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 7, 2024 11:02 PM |
I liked him in 'The Hindenburg' (1975).
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 7, 2024 11:23 PM |
I remember my mother would watch her favorite soap opera every day, Day of Our Lives. One day I sat next to her in the living room couch to tell he something and noticed Corporal Louis LeBeau from Hogan's Heroes. Apparently he was a regular on the show for many years. It's good he found continuing work. Dying at age 96 is a hell of a long run, especially for a Holocaust survivor.

That too was my first thought, not Hogan's Heroes

I remember going to Brooks Baths for a massage several times from the same masseur. Since it was across the street from CBS, I asked if any of the performers ever came for a massage. He told me that the only one was Robert Clary and that he was the nicest man on earth. Apparently, he went during a long break in the daily schedule.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 8, 2024 4:04 AM |
I wonder if he ever got to sample Hogan’s Hero?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 8, 2024 7:46 PM |
He lived up to being FRENCH.
