Don't forget the insidious George Crile's take on gays on CBS Reports in 1980 -- 1980! -- which basically said gays were sick people who needed either our help, or needed to be eradicated.

And Crile was basically a liberal. This meant that as late as the 1980s the mainstream media still found homosexuality deviant and reported on it as such.
