Little Things That Mean A Lot 🕯️

As the days are getting darker, and with all that is going on in the world, it may be a good time to appreciate the little things in life. I'll start:

A good winter coat keeping you warm.

Freshly baked breath.

Reconnecting with an old friend.

by Anonymousreply 105December 15, 2022 9:49 PM

BREAD!

by Anonymousreply 1November 13, 2022 5:31 PM

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Smell of the ocean

Cottontail rabbits

and freshly baked breath.

by Anonymousreply 2November 13, 2022 5:32 PM

Smoking a big fat blunt gives you freshly baked breath, OP.

by Anonymousreply 3November 13, 2022 5:34 PM

Preaching to the converted there, dear R3!

by Anonymousreply 4November 13, 2022 5:39 PM

Donald's micropenis, which still managed to fuck up the entire planet.

by Anonymousreply 5November 13, 2022 5:39 PM

I got a friend back. Now I have one again.

And my state just legalized recreational weed, so OP, there is indeed such a thing as freshly baked breath.

by Anonymousreply 6November 13, 2022 5:43 PM

Stretching out on the couch with your dog.

by Anonymousreply 7November 13, 2022 5:43 PM

Your health and the health of your loved ones.

by Anonymousreply 8November 13, 2022 5:44 PM

The look in my dog's face every morning when I wake up

by Anonymousreply 9November 13, 2022 5:44 PM

Freshly baked dog breath.

by Anonymousreply 10November 13, 2022 5:52 PM

Sudden guffaws like the one you gave me, OP, with the typo. I read the weed thread earlier, and it made complete sense.

Holding up the top blanket of two fuzzy blankets so my cat can burrow underneath and knead to her heart's content.

A holiday on a Friday, like the one we just had. Monday always feels like Monday to me, even when I'm off. And then Tuesday becomes a second Monday. But Friday. It's just like a long, slow, delicious slide into the weekend.

The reliably petty bitchiness of the DL.

by Anonymousreply 11November 13, 2022 6:02 PM

this is a dumb one- I live in Vermont so out of season vegetables can be iffy and having things in stock since covid even iffier. I went to the grocery last night and they had just stocked, that evening, their produce section with super fresh, not too distantly grown produce- they had EVERYTHING except radishes. it felt like heaven.

by Anonymousreply 12November 13, 2022 6:30 PM

Someone to come home to, or not.

by Anonymousreply 13November 13, 2022 6:31 PM

Double Yoke Eggs.

by Anonymousreply 14November 13, 2022 6:56 PM

It's yolk, not Yoke.

by Anonymousreply 15November 13, 2022 6:59 PM

The smell of roasting green chiles outside supermarkets during fall in New Mexico

The smell of rain in the desert

by Anonymousreply 16November 13, 2022 7:02 PM

Right you are, R15. I knew that, of course. Please don't hold it against me.

by Anonymousreply 17November 13, 2022 7:02 PM

rain on the roof lulling you to sleep

a goodnight kiss with your sweetie

a hot cup of Peet's dark roast

lemon butter salmon

a small DQ cone dipped in chocolate

by Anonymousreply 19November 13, 2022 7:08 PM

"Freshly baked breath" is one of the best mistakes that make absolute sense. Right up there with "Goodbye to my fiends here at Datalounge" penned by the beloved Joe.

by Anonymousreply 20November 13, 2022 7:29 PM

A rainy Sunday afternoon puttering, doing laundry, making a pot of soup with a Law and Order SVU Marathon on in the background - the Stephanie March years.

by Anonymousreply 21November 13, 2022 8:15 PM

Well-cooked Possum stew.

The smell of wet long johns drying in the bedroom.

The Golden Orb almost disappearing behind the interlacing fingers of the hawthorn.

Breath roasting in a pot belly stove.

by Anonymousreply 22November 13, 2022 8:22 PM

The absolute quiet in the very early morning, with only the birds singing their songs.

A bite of chocolate after a savoury dish.

Going to sleep in a freshly made bed.

That feeling when you finally understand something.

by Anonymousreply 23November 13, 2022 8:29 PM

Whiskers on kittens and warm woolen mittens.

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2022 8:32 PM

My Russian Blue kitty cat.

by Anonymousreply 25November 13, 2022 9:30 PM

The fiery glow of orange and red maple leaves with the sun setting them afire. Also, the crisp smell of Autumn all around.

15 bean soup with rainbow carrots, celery, chard and fresh rosemary from our property simmering away on the stovetop.

The smell of fresh baked cornbreath w/parmesan sprinkled on top.

My elderly pug snoozing, all tuckered out from his time at the park (he's got severe hip issues now at 13 and can only walk for a short amount of time before his hind legs start dragging).

The excitement of planting pansies outside my door for winter color.

Feeling at peace for the first time in a very long time.

by Anonymousreply 26November 14, 2022 1:42 AM

^^Realizing my first sentence was somewhat redundant.

Oh well, I REALLY love the colors of maple leaves changing for the fall and miss the East Coast so much!

by Anonymousreply 27November 14, 2022 1:44 AM

OP does freshly baked breath come from the local Koffieshop?

Because I'd like some alstublieft.

by Anonymousreply 28November 14, 2022 1:48 AM

Bed blankets on the deck railings in the cold breezy air while put fresh sheets and pillowcases on my bed and pillows.

by Anonymousreply 29November 14, 2022 2:03 AM

Being rimmed by my latest Mandingo-for-hire!

by Anonymousreply 30November 14, 2022 2:30 AM

Orange olive oil cat-hair cake and the little plastic baggies I use for its dispersal.

Small-town life.

by Anonymousreply 31November 14, 2022 2:42 AM

A fireplace, comfortable hearth rug, plenty of firewood, and a partner who enjoys cuddling and enjoying the fire with you.

by Anonymousreply 32November 14, 2022 3:33 AM

Potato chips.

by Anonymousreply 33November 14, 2022 4:21 AM

A hot shower on a cold winter's morning.

When you think about how so many people in the world don't even have running water, it puts things into perspective.

by Anonymousreply 34November 14, 2022 5:24 AM

Sneaking a few spoonfuls of melted ice cream from the top of the carton when you get home from the grocery store.

by Anonymousreply 35November 14, 2022 6:17 AM

Saying I look nice when I'm not.

by Anonymousreply 36November 14, 2022 3:17 PM

the hot, straight guy throwing u a bone, & let u suck him

by Anonymousreply 37November 14, 2022 3:22 PM

Silly daydreams you never tell to anyone else, and secret jokes only you get.

Waking up actually rested after a good nights sleep and not having to get up immediately.

Trying out a new recipe and it coming out great.

Smelling nice after a shower

The city at dusk...people leaving work, rushing home, or to get the groceries for the night, etc, as the sun sets against the skyscrapers.

by Anonymousreply 38November 14, 2022 3:35 PM

On a cold morning such as today:

My stash of indoor/lounge hoodies from the Gap

A cup of Bigelow Constant Comment tea w/ a tsp of honey

My living room throw - I bought at Lands’s End and another at The Company Store

Bright sunshine ☀️ even though it’s cold

Seeing my dachshund soak up the sun inside with only my front glass storm door

by Anonymousreply 39November 14, 2022 3:36 PM

A good dick.

by Anonymousreply 40November 14, 2022 4:38 PM

A good, sound...7 to 8 hours sleep.

by Anonymousreply 41November 14, 2022 4:47 PM

Mornings....when you don't have to work or go anywhere. You have a leisurely breakfast with coffee...watch the news, morning shows, or a good movie. Curled up on the couch. Going online to watch updated YouTube videos that you subscribe....and reading DL. I love the mornings.

by Anonymousreply 42November 14, 2022 4:51 PM

R42 Agree. And sweet memories of lock down, working from home period.

by Anonymousreply 43November 14, 2022 4:54 PM

A big dump after a meal

by Anonymousreply 44November 14, 2022 4:57 PM

I like waking up early in the morning....around 5 to 5:30 am. I do that now that I'm retired. The mornings last longer and you can get stuff done around the house...and be done by 7 to enjoy the rest of the AM.

by Anonymousreply 45November 14, 2022 5:01 PM

When do you go to bed then R45?

by Anonymousreply 46November 14, 2022 5:02 PM

I can fall asleep by by 9. Sometimes I stay up later...but then, I get up later...lol.

by Anonymousreply 47November 14, 2022 5:04 PM

Bright copper kettles, warm woolen mittens.

by Anonymousreply 48November 14, 2022 5:06 PM

When I’m not in pain I get up at 6 am

by Anonymousreply 49November 14, 2022 5:06 PM

It's easier to get up that early in the summer....when the sun rises much earlier. In the winter, it's dark.

by Anonymousreply 50November 14, 2022 5:10 PM

Going to bed after Wheel

by Anonymousreply 51November 14, 2022 5:21 PM

Feeling Cosmo jump up on the bed in the wee hours and get comfortable leaning against my foot or leg.

When Cos, for no apparent reason, decides to sit on my lap. He hates being picked up or held so this means a lot.

Watching him sleeping in the sun on his back with his paws spread in all 4 directions.

Yes, I love my cat.

by Anonymousreply 52November 14, 2022 5:33 PM

Getting beautifully wrapped, expensive gifts.

by Anonymousreply 53November 14, 2022 8:03 PM

My parrot's warm, dusty, feathery smell and softness when she falls asleep pressed up against my neck or cheek

Agree with the leisurely morning posts: perusing the web, checking email, drinking Peet's dark roast, watching You Tubes... not having to go anywhere but knowing you could...

Finally being able to use candles again because it's not 90 something here in LA

Enjoying the cool evenings and mornings and having to use a warm robe or hoodie

The sound of the rain (rare) when I'm in bed (rarer) and don't have to get up and work (extremely rare). = COZE DOWN TIME!

by Anonymousreply 54November 14, 2022 8:12 PM

Not hearing automatic weapons being discharged in the distance.

by Anonymousreply 55November 14, 2022 8:21 PM

Listening to the smooth sounds of Kitty Kallen on the stereo.

Enjoying a warm glass of good brandy.

Lounging in my boudoir while draped in a black satin teddy, the softest full length chinchilla & 5 inch Frederick's Of Hollywood mules.

Cleaning up all the "evidence" before that bitch Kris and her brats come home!!!

I love rainy and snowy days....very cozy, with the protection of your home.

by Anonymousreply 57November 14, 2022 9:08 PM

Grey, moody days in summer when the trees are green.

Bright, sunny days in winter when all the leaves are gone.

Feeling seen and/or appreciated, for whatever reason or no reason.

Discovering an old band or artist new to you, with a huge catalogue to dive into.

A good espresso.

by Anonymousreply 61November 14, 2022 10:46 PM

When I work occasionally in Atlanta or Wilmington, NC, I used to go on runs and explore the area (I do that in all cities I visit). The little kids in the neighborhoods would high-five me as I run by. It's super charming, and really an energy booster. Kids don't do that anywhere else I run

And like others, a purring cat in your lap.

by Anonymousreply 62November 14, 2022 10:52 PM

[QUOTE] Freshly baked breath

I want one. My breath is quite stale especially in the morning.

by Anonymousreply 63November 15, 2022 12:48 AM

The type of sleep that's dreamless, where you don't move, have to get up to go to the bathroom, and don't wake up sore

Being reminded of a funny childhood memory you hadn't thought about in a long time

CSleeling in fresh sheets

Coffee made just right, that you don't have to drink in a rush

The sound of heavy rain, lightning and thunder

The smell right before it snows and right after it stops

Clean teeth

by Anonymousreply 64November 15, 2022 1:06 AM

A crisp autumn day with fallen leaves.

A snowy winter night, while feeling safe and warm at home.

Dogs.

Coffee.

Cozy rooms.

All of these responses are making me smile.

Mine is, successfully making a fire in the woodstove. Getting it up to temp without smoking up the house. Then enjoying the radiating warmth. It's always a small victory when me make fire! Thumb nose at gas bill! (plus an old coffee percolater, set on the stove top and filled with water and nicely-smelling things, makes the house pretty cozy)

by Anonymousreply 69November 15, 2022 3:23 AM

Out of bed, grab my board and I’m in the lineup for sunrise (0544 today).

Everybody stops and watches.

The local pod of dolphins dropping in if I’m lucky.

Mangoes and avocados back in season.

BBQs on the balcony at sunset.

by Anonymousreply 70November 15, 2022 4:32 AM

When you feel down...things are looking low (such as midterms 2022)....then get an unexpected surprise and a turnaround. It gives you hope that things aren't all that bad...gives you faith again.

by Anonymousreply 71November 15, 2022 6:47 AM

A rainy Sunday with absolutely nothing planned.

Receiving your ticket to the ballet or opera in the mail.

Seeing the Christmas markets reappearing in town.

The sweet scent of roasting chestnuts in the oven.

The moment you manage to stop worrying about something.

by Anonymousreply 72November 15, 2022 8:52 AM

Beautiful posts like this, Dutchie. They mean a lot.

by Anonymousreply 73November 15, 2022 9:53 AM

When the morning meeting you dread is canceled.

A pot of fresh brewed Harney & Sons Paris tea

Napping in a sunbeam on a winter Sunday

A warm sleepy pug in your lap in front of the fireplace

An excellent pot roast ragu over tagliatelle

Sharing a primo baked edible with your partner before a lazy Sunday of puttering

Binging Ina Garten, Pati Jinich or Lidia cooking shows

by Anonymousreply 74November 15, 2022 10:18 AM

R73 thank you that is very kind of you ❤️

by Anonymousreply 75November 15, 2022 10:49 AM

We need more threads like this. :)

by Anonymousreply 76November 15, 2022 11:01 AM

r70, a dear friend and I will try to hold hands on the same wave, and we start cackling like insane idiots, because we know we look like insane idiots. We've only been successful twice. He's been my surfing buddy for at least a decade.

by Anonymousreply 77November 15, 2022 12:56 PM

Why is OPs post crossed out for me? I just WW the post to keep it visable

by Anonymousreply 78November 15, 2022 3:09 PM

That's strange, R78.

Then again, Muriel doesn't like happy moments. Or happy people.

by Anonymousreply 79November 15, 2022 3:14 PM

We call those party waves, R77! Usually at the end of the session.

by Anonymousreply 80November 15, 2022 3:17 PM

R72 I love the Christkindlmarkets too, even though I'm a Jew! I love the Glühwein, and buying ornaments for my Christian friends who collect them, and other small gifts. I like to get stoned before arriving, and I always treat myself to the Ginger bread.

by Anonymousreply 81November 22, 2022 1:53 AM

Oh yes, there's nothing like visiting the markets while on a little high, R81. Have fun at this year's..!

by Anonymousreply 82November 22, 2022 9:38 AM

Early morning walks on a fog shrouded beach.

The warmth of a tile stove.

Fondue.

Felted slippers

My partner playing the piano.

Warm plates.

I have never understood putting hot food on an ice cold plate, particularly in winter.

by Anonymousreply 86November 22, 2022 1:47 PM

Why is this thread greyed out?

I love smelling “country” smells while in the middle of Manhattan. The smell of a fireplace when it’s cold out. Sometimes on rainy days, there’s a whiff of salt water on the breeze, coming from the river. And the smell of freshly-mowed grass coming from Central Park in the summer.

by Anonymousreply 87November 22, 2022 1:53 PM

Catching a smile

by Anonymousreply 88November 22, 2022 7:53 PM

The thread is grayed out because it's so saccharine.

Each entry feels like it's supposed to be spoken with your eyes closed and a smarmy grin.

by Anonymousreply 89November 22, 2022 8:37 PM

You need little things that mean a lot, or anything at all, R89. The DataLounge will pray for you.

by Anonymousreply 90November 23, 2022 6:18 AM

I love the smoky smells of wood burning fireplaces. Especially on a really cold day...even better if it's snowy. I wish I had a fireplace. I made a fake one with a beautiful, antique mantle surround...then bought an electric wood burning stove, putting it inside the surround. The fire flames look pretty realistic, but no warmth or wood burning smells.

by Anonymousreply 91November 23, 2022 1:25 PM

R9, that’s disappointment mixed with mild shock.

Is your dog a nurse, by any chance?

by Anonymousreply 92November 23, 2022 1:34 PM

A special Thanksgiving dinner!

by Anonymousreply 93November 23, 2022 1:35 PM

Tacky pillar candles at your rival’s cocktail party.

by Anonymousreply 94November 23, 2022 1:37 PM

r92, no he's an asshole so, close enough!

by Anonymousreply 95November 23, 2022 3:48 PM

There's a renovation going on in the apartment next to me. I'm surprised how much I like the smell of cut lumber. It's really nice.

by Anonymousreply 96November 23, 2022 4:06 PM

R95 Rescue-Chick you do always make me laugh.

Something to add from my walk through town tonight: The Christmas tree has arrived! And the shops are putting their lights and decorations up.

by Anonymousreply 97November 23, 2022 4:38 PM

R96 you and me both! It's so calming.

R91: A friend of mine has that too, and whenever he "lights up" his faux fireplace, he lights a stick of incense that smells just like a burning log!

(R93, R94 .. for some reason blocked but I want to see what they're saying)

by Anonymousreply 98November 23, 2022 4:40 PM

Pulling out your boxes of Christmas ornaments to start decorating tomorrow.

Making Thanksgiving dishes a day ahead of time to bring to a dinner you're not hosting!

A place for everything, and everything in its place. Folding clothes right out of the dryer and putting them away.

Making my own healthy dog food for my aged pug.

by Anonymousreply 99November 23, 2022 6:38 PM

I just bought one of those little log cabin incense burners....with balsam fir cone incense for the wood scent of my faux fireplace. I remember those when I was a kid. Good suggestion Dutchie, R98. :)

by Anonymousreply 100November 24, 2022 1:39 PM

I enjoy my cinnamon broomstick. Publix sells them this time of year.

by Anonymousreply 101November 24, 2022 2:03 PM

^^You put a cinnamon stick in your pubic hair??

by Anonymousreply 102November 24, 2022 8:06 PM

I’m making a huge batch of home made chai tea latte mix and shortbread for my super old aunts. I make them 2 batches one for Xmas, and then another in Feb so they have enough to get them through the winter.

by Anonymousreply 103November 29, 2022 11:46 AM

That is very sweet of you, R103

by Anonymousreply 104November 29, 2022 8:49 PM

Jarred tomatoes with garlic and basil from the summer garden. This year I made 30 quarts and used one tonight. Past efforts from another season in the present are very satisfying.
