Why were so many Old Hollywood actresses gay/bi

Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn, Vivien Leigh, Joan Crawford, Louise Brooks, Tallulah Bankhead, Alla Nazimova, Marilyn Monroe, Vivien Leigh, Hedy Lamarr, Ava Gardner, Lana Turner all seemed to be bi or gay. Even Janet Gaynor and Barbara Stanwyck had rumors. And it was not just actresses, Édith Piaf, Billie Holiday, Frida Kahlo...

Compared to today, when society is a lot more liberal, why were there so many more queer women back then, in the entertainment industry?

wow, Vivien Leigh was so bi that she was bi twice !

Vivien Leigh was the biggest, hungriest, most forceful carpet muncher in town.

Even Crawford was taken aback.

Because the sexiest men alive looked like this.

Vivien leigh didn't care who or what she was fucking, as long as she was fucking. it could be a director, a co-star, a set designer, the crew, the wardrobe staff, some of the extras, or even the scenery, or everything and everyone at the same time. Woman was a WHOAR

It’s well known that Lana Turner caused astronomical damage in the hairdressing department each week. Every female star had a labeled styrofoam head with her customized wig mounted on it, used for bad hair days. Turner would place the heads face-up on the floor, squat over them, and ride them to a noisy climax, not caring if studio tours were passing by.

Her favorite was Judy Garland’s, and the young singer found this humiliating.

The styrofoam heads were reduced to smithereens by Turner’s violent assaults, and she could go through 6 or 7 at a time until her passion bated. The wigs of course had to be mended, washed, reset, and restyled, all as Turner sat by, laughing.

This was discussed on a Merv Griffin show once.

R5 What does that has to do with the subject?

Men and women are just not compatible

The "roaring twenties" were wild times - anything goes, as Cole Porter said. Some of that carefree freedom continued in Hollywood in the golden era 1930s-1941 prewar. Then WW2 and people got a lot more conservative after, especially in the 1950s. Things still "went" but now there were tabloids and cameras following them around. Back in the golden era there were just gossip mavens not so much cameras. Also, The studio system had fixers to protect their stars. After it disintegrated stars were left vulnerable and many didn't live out in the open as they once did.

R9 A lot more goes today and times are wilder and more carefree. So why aren't there as many bi/gay women in Hollywood today?

by Anonymousreply 10November 11, 2022 8:27 AM

R10 I really don’t think “anything goes” now in the court of public opinion. Actors are commodities and of course are worried if their public is going to shun them if they come out as lesbian or bi. I think there are probably just as many (the probability is I’m sure, mostly the same) but they’re not out. We are living in a conservative-shifting world. Ask yourself, why aren’t there many, maybe 1-2 , out professional NFL players, soccer players, baseball players? Same reason. They’re there, not out.

by Anonymousreply 11November 11, 2022 1:41 PM

R11 At least there are out sportsmen now. There were none back in the 1940s or 50s. And if you think the times are more conservative now than they have been 70 years ago, you are nuts

am personally a big fan of media that's too homopobic to admit gay people exist yet nonetheless operates with a homoerotic subtext so insanely powerful that none of the motivations make sense unless the same-sex players in question carnally desire each other

by Anonymousreply 13November 13, 2022 5:07 PM

R12 I never said that things are more conservative now than 70 years ago. We are in a conservative shift.
