I posted this in the Jensen Ackles Supernatural prequel thread, and it turns out that I was right.:
"I just caught the premiere.
As a hard core Supernatural fan, I'm sad to say that I HATED it.
First off, they changed John and Mary's history. Right off the bat.
In the original series, when Dean is sent back in time for the first time, John is an innocent young man back from the war. He has no clue that Mary is a hunter from a hunter family. And this is AFTER they had been dating for a while.
In fact, John is about to propose to Mary, and he STILL doesn't know she's a hunter.
So why are they starting off this series with them just meeting, and Mary telling John that she's a hunter?
Anyone who watches Supernatural, knows that's not the correct timeline!!!
Second, I don't like the actress who plays Mary. AT ALL.
She's not right for the part. They are trying to make her some badass hunter like Sam and Dean, but that's not who she is. In the time two times that we've seen Mary (in the 1970's), the actress who played Mary (Amy Gumenick) is very soft and sweet. Endearingly sweet, in fact.
This young actress they have in the Winchester series is cold and not very charismatic. And she has no chemistry with the guy who plays John Winchester.
I hate that young females nowdays always have to be like men. They always have to be "kickass" and hard, to give the impression of strength.
I feel that there's a strength in softness. You can be passive and sweet, yet still be strong. Many women are like that. Female characters don't always have to be a "badass bitch" to be "strong."
I think that both Amy Gumenick and Samantha Smith (original Mary Winchester) are both soft spoken, yet strong. They both portrayed a softer side of Mary Winchester, yet both had strength when it was called for. But not in the way that this new actress is portraying it. This actress is just too fucking bossy. And that's NOT the Mary Winchester I know from the 15 seasons of Supernatural.
The guy who plays John just seems like a sidekick to Mary, which just adds to the frustration of this first episode.
Sam and Dean were partners. "The Winchesters" Mary and John are not partners. They made her the boss, and that too is not the way they were portrayed in Supernatural. In the original show, they were an old-fashioned husband and wife couple from the 1970's, trying to raise a family.
This new John and Mary are too 2022. Not 1972. And I hate that.
I'm shocked that the people involved in this show have strayed so much from the lore and the original characters.
You have McG as producer, Robbie Thompson as EP and writer, and Jensen and Danneel as EP's.
All of these people are very familiar with all 15 seasons of the original Supernatural, so it just bums me out that this new show doesn't have any of the feel of the old Supernatural.
I'm not loving it so far."
