Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Renewed for 2nd Season on Netflix

Despite a round of new Netflix cancellations it looks like Sandman get another season! None of the threads are coming up or I would have posted this great news there.

Well, the first six episodes came out this week, has anyone watched them? They cut out most the short stories, making the show much tauter, but also kinda killing the soul of the source material in the process. Flows better now, but much of the humanity has been lost. Still, I think it's an improvement over the first season where the Rose arc with that terrible actress killed the momentum dead halfway in.

Irish actor Ruairi O'Connor as Orpheus was the clear standout in this first part. He's like the more visually appealing, more talented version of Eddie Redmayne.

It is funny that Sandman has not had an undated thread, not that I could find, considering that Gaiman is a fucking genius and now a criminal perv.

In the second series, first six episodes, I kinda like how Desire redeemed themselves after coordinating Dream's imprisonment in the first series, followed by Dream's death of Ishtar.

Interesting that Delirium lead Dream to his son for guidance and a... boon.

This thread by VOTN was the official thread for the first season, but I decided to bump this one instead since that one is almost full.

I’m really enjoying the second season and sorry to see that this is its last season but well, I get it.

by Anonymousreply 4July 16, 2025 7:59 PM

I want to know what made Delight turn into Delirium. I think I'll just ask Gemini if it isn't explained by the end of the season.

I didn't buy for one second that Desire wasn't behind Delirium's sudden urge to find her brother AND behind Dream's desire for Nada. It just makes perfect sense.

by Anonymousreply 5July 16, 2025 8:05 PM

Thanks r3, VOTIN 's thread did not show up when I searched. Not odd, and the reason I apologized when I posted.

Gaiman is a genius who can rewrite backstories and weave a new tale from old. Just like the Book of Mormon rewrites the backstory of the Biblical characters. Wait, wait, wait, wasn't that Gaiman's TV series Lucifer. Wait, wait, wasn't that Gaiman's series American Gods?

by Anonymousreply 6July 16, 2025 8:06 PM

Poor Orpheus.

by Anonymousreply 7July 17, 2025 3:58 PM

It's a shame no one is paying attention to the show due to the scandal. I really feel sorry for the actors who are missing out on the publicity. At least they were able to get to the end of the story before the whole thing fell apart.

by Anonymousreply 8July 17, 2025 4:49 PM

Everything is got into motion by Death repeatedly guilt-tripping Dream (about Nada, about Delirium), yet everyone wants to blame Desire, who had nothing to do with it this time.

by Anonymousreply 9July 17, 2025 4:55 PM

We have more episodes to go!

by Anonymousreply 10July 17, 2025 5:10 PM

Six more episodes (?) before Gaiman goes to jail?

by Anonymousreply 11July 19, 2025 1:26 PM

Yep, five more episodes on July 24th, and a bonus episode July 31st.

by Anonymousreply 12July 19, 2025 1:32 PM

I like the show and have watched 2 eps of the current season, but it's just so fucking sloooooow.

Can't stay awake for more than one episode at a time.

by Anonymousreply 13July 19, 2025 1:34 PM

Yeah, these "gods" tend to be a bit ponderous. And the show revolves around Dream, who is obviously the "dreamiest" of them all and takes his sweet time to get his flowery sentences out. That's probably the biggest factor in the show being slow.

Anyway, here's the Part 2 teaser. Freddie Fox gets shirtless (of course) and still has the body of a 19-year-old, the bitch.

That's just nepo baby Tom Sturridge, the most ponderous, low-energy actor of his generation. An actor who, in comparison, makes Jeremy Irons seem like a squirrel on speed.

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2025 2:07 PM

Supposedly, Colin Morgan (Merlin) was Sturridge's main rival for the part

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2025 3:21 PM

Second season is so good. OF COURSE, it is..

by Anonymousreply 17July 19, 2025 5:34 PM

His name is so convenient for our kind.

"KNEEL, GAY MAN!"

by Anonymousreply 18July 19, 2025 5:57 PM

This very short opening of the next part brings up something I've been wondering about and hope gets addressed eventually, namely who are the three sisters – are they the Fates, the Furies, and how does their power compare to Destiny's? He makes a weird comment here about how they mustn't be referred to as the Furies.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 19July 19, 2025 7:54 PM

You don't call them the Furies because it would offend them and attract their attention. Hence the names people use instead, like the Kindly Ones. It's the same as calling the fairies named like 'the fair ones'. . Gaiman is identifying all the ' three sister' figures from Greek myth (Fates, Furies) as the same 'powerful 'triple goddess' . How they relate to Destiny won't get really explained.

by Anonymousreply 20July 19, 2025 8:06 PM

Wonder what Gaiman is up to these days. Vetting nannies I suppose

by Anonymousreply 21July 19, 2025 8:13 PM

They are the nasty old cunts.

Toil and bubble...

by Anonymousreply 22July 20, 2025 12:17 AM

Wound up enjoying this season very much and am looking forward to the episodes dropping tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 23July 23, 2025 10:48 AM

Now you know why the hot Uncle stayed close to the hot headed(?) nephew...

by Anonymousreply 24July 23, 2025 11:33 AM

R15 I had to watch season 2 in bites. Couldn't take his constant pouty lips. It was the only expression he maintained.

by Anonymousreply 25July 23, 2025 11:44 AM

r25 The pouty lips were completely out of control this season! They were all I could see, really distracting. I don't know why he thinks this is a good look on a man, it's really not.

by Anonymousreply 26July 23, 2025 11:52 AM

I believe it was a characterization. Tom is an ACTOR.

by Anonymousreply 27July 23, 2025 12:00 PM

Characterisation of what, bitch? He doesn't look like that in the comics, nor did he look like that in the first SEASON.

by Anonymousreply 28July 23, 2025 12:24 PM

You read THE COMICS?

bitch, bitch, bitch

by Anonymousreply 29July 23, 2025 8:20 PM

SO we get the final episodes of the sardonic pouter tomorrow?

by Anonymousreply 30July 23, 2025 10:04 PM

I'm excited to see the homosexual Corinthian again!

I remember when we lusted after him on DL constantly and thought he was gonna be big, but then it just never happened for him.

Love the actors on this show, sad that Neil is a perv.

[quote]Poor Orpheus.

He was absolutely annoying as hell. I just had to keep reminding myself that he is supposed to be very young. Ignored his father. Ignored his mother. Ignored his aunt. Told his dad he wasn't his dad anymore. Turned back when he shouldn't have because he just couldn't wait until he was out of the damn tunnel. Nice of Dream to take care of him, from a distance, although he was mostly a little shit.

[quote]Everything is got into motion by Death repeatedly guilt-tripping Dream (about Nada, about Delirium), yet everyone wants to blame Desire, who had nothing to do with it this time.

In the comics, it was in fact Desire who brought together Dream and Nada although in the series they denied it.

And Nada goes to hell because she kills herself. Dream says she can go to hell or stay with him and he's so incensed when she chooses hell that he takes her there himself.

She's also reincarnated as a Chinese baby. The show went out of its way to make him/Desire seem less horrible.

by Anonymousreply 32July 24, 2025 3:47 AM

This Orpheus made me think on another Orpheus on Kaos, a show we lost much too soon. That actor is also cute.

Greek mythology live action shows just don't seem to last, sadly.

by Anonymousreply 33July 24, 2025 4:48 AM

I don't understand Gaiman. If he rewrites all the classical myths, why couldn't he transport Orpheus to his realm and give him a body? NO FAMILY BLOOD SPILLED.

Because he would be in Dream's world, he could have the most incredible orgasms. Eurydice could visit.

Gaiman missed a real opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 34July 24, 2025 11:26 AM

Finished it yesterday already and it was a decent enough wrap-up to an ill-fated series. The final episode was a bit jarring though, felt like a sendoff to a show that was on air for seven seasons, at least.

For once in maybe ever, we get a gay relationship (Loki and Joffrey) that's more developed than the rushed hetero one between Constantine and The Corintihian. I mean, what the fuck was that about? A victim of the rushed conclusion, I'm sure, but it was still weird how he fell head over heels for her that one day they were tracking Daniel.

Best parts for me were Loki and Puck (obviously) and Matthew. I nearly melted when Dream caressed his head at the very end, and then Matthew looking back as he was heading off.

The way I screamed when my vampire Louis showed up, all Armand-like! Anderson had so much pathos in his face, he kinda saved the whole ending for me.

by Anonymousreply 35July 25, 2025 2:00 PM

Freddie Fox, with the most perfect butt ever.

And another one.

I noticed only now that there are two shadows on the door. Perfect little Easter egg for a trickster god who takes on disguises.

[quote]more developed than the rushed hetero one between Constantine and The Corinthian.

The Sandman was about iterations. Despair paid tribute to her predecessor of 100,000 years ago.

The Corinthian recognized his previous iteration and remarked that he was surprised that he was previously evil, but he continued to eat eyeballs, and he recognized Constantine as the end of a long line of Constantines.

It is nice to see that people change, even Morpheus. I was the entire subtext of the series.

Hated Loki, but he was written that way.

by Anonymousreply 38July 25, 2025 3:46 PM

This shot made me laugh – armless Queen of the Faerie. The perils of costume design and cinematography...

Should have been caught on the set already, but by then they were cancelled and probably didn't care anymore.

It was strange in some respects. They built up Nuala's role for no obvious reason or purpose except maybe 'girl power', yet they already had Lucienne and Johanna Constantine being very prominent. Degaying the second Corinthian and pairing him up with Constantine was a choice I suppose, though perhaps Loki/Puck made up for that. Freddie Fox would have been a perfect Lucifer, if they hadn't decided to gender swap the role.

by Anonymousreply 40July 25, 2025 5:28 PM

They made the best out of a shitty situation, but it really is optimal if you binge both seasons close together. The three-year wait was crazy, all these old characters coming back (Henrietta, especially) left me wondering if I missed something in Part 1 of this season.
