The time when Thomas stole the Broadway role from Valerie Harper.....

Back in the winter of 1974, Valerie Harper was replaced by Marlo Thomas in the play "Thieves" by Herb Gardner while the show was wrapping up out-of-town tryouts in Boston. Director Michael Bennett had also left the show.

Thomas was in a long-term relationship with Gardner, and she replaced Harper when the play went to Broadway in April, 1974. Thomas told the press that Harper quit the show 'without any notice', because she was offered her own spin-off series on CBS and had to start filming. Thomas said newly-hired director Charles Grodin told Gardner he wouldn't do the show unless Thomas was hired as the star. Thomas explained that's how she ended up with the Broadway role. (Again, this is what Marlo was telling the press as to why she replaced Harper).

Harper was furious, as this was not the truth and she was looking forward to opening on Broadway. Yet Harper kept quiet at the time, as she wanted to focus on 'Rhoda' and generate good press for her new series - which didn't start filming until July, 1974.

Harper later told the truth of what really happened - Thomas really wanted to be a Broadway star after years on television, and threatened to end her relationship with Gardner if he didn't fire Harper and replace her with Thomas. Harper was very up front: she was fired from the show for no reason other than Thomas was the long-time girlfriend of Gardner. (Apparently, when Bennett found out what was going on - he quit the production, as he knew this was not fair to Harper). Harper made it clear in interviews that "Rhoda" had nothing to do with her leaving the show - she was going to open in April, 1974 and stay for at least three months on Broadway, then begin her new series. It was all well-planned, and agreed upon with Gardner.

The show opened in early April, 1974 with Thomas in the role, and received mixed reviews (Harper got better reviews in Boston). It ran for 300+ performances, closing in January, 1975. A feature film was made in 1977, and Thomas starred once again. The film got mixed reviews and didn't do too well at the box office.
