Judge Judy hates poor people and shows no empathy towards people in tough situations. How can anybody like her?
I'm home sick and saw a return this morning. A woman was getting sued for unpaid rent by her abusive ex-boyfriend. She left before the lease ended and the ex had to pay the full rent. Judge Judy was like "Well, if he was so abusive, why did he live with him for two years before that?" The woman tried to explain that she'd put up with the abuse for a long time because she had low income and nowhere else to go, and finally couldn't take it anymore so she moved back to her home state with her parents.
Judy replied with something like: "Should have left sooner. Why didn't you go back to your parents when he first hit you?"
The woman responded: "Because I'm almost 40 and don't get along with my parents. That was a last resort"
The Judy said: "You could have left if you wanted to."
The woman responded: "And do what, be homeless?"
The judge is always like this to people with renting issues. If somebody complains about poor living conditions and crappy landlords, it's met with "Move out!" She doesn't seem to understand that poor people have less options. Rent is expensive and people can't just move out in the middle of the night if they lack funds.
She also looks down on people who she considers "Loser" from poor families and little opportunities, and openly brags about her father paid for law school.

People who go on that show knowing they're going to get abused are pretty much asking for TV justice. Which has no bases in law

R3, I'm not entirely sure about that. Comedian Ben Palmer has regularly trolled many of these court shows where he and a friend of his make up a story and pretend to sue each other. I'm aware that the shows producers cover the costs of whatever the ruling ends up being, so the person actually charged never ends up paying anything. But beyond that, they "scripted' the dialogue themselves and pranked the show.

When her show first appeared I didn't like her because she belittled people, and that seemed harsh because arguing your own case in court is intimidating enough! So I stopped watching. The reason people enjoy watching her is because she is masterful at spotting and exposing liars. She embarks on a course of questioning that makes people who are dumb enough to try and make up a story ultimately look like absolute fools. It is extremely satisfying to watch this deserved humiliation as it unfolds. The fact that shes an absolutely over-the-top curmudgeon with no patience or empathy adds a nice comedic touch to the proceedings. The entire package provides a unique form of entertainment that never gets old, which is why repeats of Judge Judy (which is no longer in production) top all current syndicated shows in the ratings.

Her father was my dentist from when I was about 6 until I was 15. The office was in the front of their house in Brooklyn. He was always very kind to me, quiet, professional, and did excellent orthodontic work. When he finally took off my braces, he said, "You're ready for Hollywood."
Her mother always wore a white uniform, including her shoes. Opening the front door, late as usual or having missed an appointment, facing her behind the office desk was like facing Judge Judy in court. She was cold, distant, professional. Seemed a little stern to me as a young kid. Judge Judy's very handsome brother started treating his father's patients. He and his wife were young, just wonderful! Super kind and warm, friendly, happy, and even I could pick up that they were very much in love.
My father was a blue collar worker, but her parents always treated him respectfully and fairly. In all the years I and my siblings went to him, I don't recall any disputes, tension, or ill will, besides us kids just never wanting to go to or be at the dentist. I never saw Judge Judy.

I watched the credits for the original show and there are NO writers listed. Some of the "court" shows do have actors reading scripts, but JJ isn't one of them.
Because JJ was doing a NEW show - she had to agree with the old production company that the new show would have a new cast and format so the old company could continue showing reruns and not mix people up.....senile folks wouldn't know they were watching reruns.
So no Byrd. As someone wrote upthread - he's back in the different court show her company is producing that starts up this year. Judy Justice new episodes start next week.

[quote]She isn't there to be liked. She's there as an independent arbitrator between two warring parties. And sometimes she has to arbitrate over the use of taxpayers' money being given to unscrupulous freeloaders.
Taxpayers money? Most of JJ's cases are between private citizens.
I'm figuring you have no problem with corporate welfare? That's OK, right? The Repub CEOs are some of the biggest freeloaders in the US. Most wealthy Repubs don't pay their fair share of taxes, while depriving their workers suitable compensation.
Multi-billionaire dollar companies such as WalMart purposely hire part-timers so they don't have to give their workers healthcare, pensions or much of anything else. This practice, in turn, causes their workers to apply for Medicaid. Same with that vile Amazon. Bezos is always fighting unions and claims his workers are "lazy". What a POS.
Read and learn about the ongoing corruption of these billion dollar corporations and the vile Koch brothers.

Politically, she is a moderate democrat.

Judy is a former judge but an "arbitrator" on the show. She has no jurisdiction. I like her but she needs to move on now. Her "Um is not an answer" is silly, since she interrupts the person who is only starting to answer. However, she's great at asking questions to learn more about the person, and then goes for the kill.

Her new show is not as good as her old one. Something is off. Maybe her age. The energy level is lower. She also seems less mean.
I distinctly remember an old show where she showed a human side. A man who it became clear was mildly mentally deficient had been scammed. As it became clear she became visibly upset, stopped his testimony and ripped the defendant a new one.

You want to talk conservative Republicans...Wapner was the epitome of one. I loathed him. He looked the part of a kindly, wise Judge but he was definitely NOT one. On his show he came across as snide and blase and very comfortable in his perceived superiority. And his decisions usually were the wrong ones. He seemed to prefer some people more than others, the evidence be damned. He was a lousy Judge.

Former family court judge, huh? I wonder how Judy would have handled the POS trash bag Long Guyland cop who tortured his young son, the cop forced the boy sleep in a freezing cold garage and, didn't feed the kid regularly. The boy eventually died.
The cop was recently arrested. Of course, the cop had a new slut wife and his first wife, due to the cop's lies, wasn't given custody of the son and another child, thank that child was a boy too. For whatever reason, the family court judge believed the cop over the sons biological mother. CPS obviously also weren't doing their jobs.

From what I recall, the show paid the judgment to the winner.
So if you were in a monetary dispute with someone who had no means to pay you back-going on here was an easy way to get your money and a free trip to LA.
Did you ever notice with some of the more frivolous cases , she would ask the plaintiff and defendant in a mocking tone -“did you have a good flight? How’s the hotel? How’s the food?” She knew they were full of shit.
I had a coworker who went on the show 10 years ago. She was a single mom and lent her ex boyfriend $4,000, which he never paid back. Judy lectured het on being an idiot and not prioritizing her child-but she got her money.

Judy's expertise is family court. She's superb at it because she knows the system, she knows the participants and she obviously knows the law. She's also very evenhanded when it comes to her judgements, i.e. men vs. women. One memorable case had the wife suing her husband for abuse. She had been to court over a dozen times. Judy came in having read the history and really let the wife have it for trying to use the system for her own vendetta. After dismissing her case, the husband said almost tearfully that it took JJ only fifteen minutes to resolve what he's been going through for numerous years with a variety of judges. Judy also told him that there is now a recording of her abuse of the system, although whether any other Judge would give it any credence is debatable.
Also Judge Milian of Peoples Court comes from a Construction family and any type of case that involves that will almost certainly merit an excellent and understandable ruling. For her faults (she's a Trumper), Milian recognizes that court is not the lottery (one of her sayings) and won't simply give the maximum because she can. She says the courts are to make you whole, not to put you in a better position than when you started.

I tell this story often because it shows how things have evolved and how there is a ton of unflattering JJ moments locked away in a vault, never to be seen.
I went to a very early taping of JJ. It was before the professional audiences they now use. The case was of an old woman who was suing a guy for injuries after he alleged knocked her down in the street. The defendant said she tried to hit him with her cane but fell over. JJ used all her insults on the guy, calling him a liar and also saying "look at that woman? does she look like she'd cause the injuries to herself? Well, this guy had a secret weapon. He had a recording of the incident. when he produced the video in his hand, I saw the panicked look on the staff. This was obviously way before home surveillance was commonplace and was recorded from a store nearby. JJ allowed the tape to be brought into evidence, a surprise because he didn't reveal it before but everyone in the audience was aware that it had to back up his story or he wouldn't have brought it. They took a short recess and brought in a TV monitor and VCR. They confiscated the tape before so I'm certain JJ saw it. They played the tape in court and sure enough, the kindly old lady was nothing but a racist old bitch who told the defendant not to walk on her street. He had a few choice words for her and then turned to leave. The woman tried to hit him from behind with her cane and missed. She fell down and immediately started screaming that he pushed her. The audience OHHHHHH and groaned. A total gotcha moment. JJ had dug a hole for herself and said something like "you need professional help" to the woman before dismissing the case. We in the audience boo'd because it was so unsatisfying and JJ based her entire performance on her own prejudices. The case never aired.

What she probably smells is bullshit. The woman is so abused but yet won’t move back with parents because she doesn’t get along with them. They doesn’t make fkin sense. A real battered woman will learn to get along with her parents for safety. It doesn’t make sense cause the shit ain’t true. There are mitigating circumstances.
