Any gossip on Andy Garcia? Why didn't he become a major movie star?

The Godfather part 3 was his peak, after that it was all downhill. He was good looking, and when young, resembled JFK Junior.

by Anonymousreply 57November 7, 2022 8:39 AM

I look forward to the comments, OP. He was gorgeous in his prime and should have been a star.

by Anonymousreply 1November 2, 2022 4:19 AM

You don’t hear much about him anymore.

by Anonymousreply 2November 2, 2022 4:25 AM

Name all the big name latino movie stars in the last 30 years?

by Anonymousreply 3November 2, 2022 4:34 AM

He could be sexy and dynamic onscreen, OP. But a great (or even especially good) actor? Never.

A lot of his performances are mediocre. A few are genuinely terrible.

I just rewatched GODFATHER 3 (the recut version). And dreadful as Sofia Coppola is, she has her match in Andy Garcia's performance.

by Anonymousreply 4November 2, 2022 4:34 AM

R3 Benicio del Toro, Javier Bardem, Antonio Banderas?

by Anonymousreply 5November 2, 2022 4:41 AM

He was hilariously terrible in Jennifer 8

Too conservative and always overacting like Benjamin Bratt.

by Anonymousreply 7November 2, 2022 4:43 AM

He was always hot back in the day, limited as an actor but he was hot. I think he just did Mama Mia 2 (or 3?) and was Cher's love interest - is that possible?

Years ago I heard about him going on vacation with the wife and kids while stashing his mistress nearby for sexy time. I think he's still married to the same woman so either he didn't get caught or she puts up with it.

by Anonymousreply 8November 2, 2022 4:47 AM

[quote][R3] Benicio del Toro, Javier Bardem, Antonio Banderas?

Bardem and Banderas are both from Spain, so not Latino (i.e., Latin American).

However, they are Hispanic (i.e., Spanish-speaker).

by Anonymousreply 9November 2, 2022 4:53 AM

Career was over when we found out he had the remnants of a vestigial twin removed from his neck.

by Anonymousreply 10November 2, 2022 4:55 AM

He was a major movie star, but as with a lot of stars it was for a transient amount of time. They have their time in the sun and then fade away. He’s still in things. Very few are Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise or Sandra Bullock.

by Anonymousreply 11November 2, 2022 5:06 AM

His Siamese twin was on the warpath for being separated.

Watch the film Basket Case for reference

I enjoyed him in black rain.

Especially the scene where he's decapitated.

Andy Garcia starred with Gloria Estefan in remake of "Father of the Bride" that came out last June.

He's older and heavier but he kept his hair and he still looks pretty good for a 66 year old guy.

by Anonymousreply 17November 2, 2022 5:54 AM

He's a typical conservative white cuban. I don't csre about him at all.

by Anonymousreply 18November 2, 2022 5:56 AM

In common with many "white/European" Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and South Americans Andy Garcia's looks could get him roles as Italian, Spanish, Hispanic, etc... but that only goes so far. This being said he's racked up a decent C.V. over the years.

Andy Garcia is well known for being very private and guarded. Admirable qualities to be sure, but in Hollywood where often such beliefs often must go by the wayside if one wants work (along with a good many others), not willing to play the game may have cost AG.

At age 33, after working with the likes of Brian De Palma and Hal Ashby and catching people's attention in The Untouchables and getting the attention of NYFCC for his part in 8 Million Ways to Die, Andy Garcia landed his first major role in the $30M Ridley Scott production Black Rain starring Michael Douglas. Scott had delivered several misfires after Alien. Legend and Someone to Watch Over Me were flops. Blade Runner had underperformed, though, over the years, developed a strong cult following which slowly raised its reverence amongst cinephiles and even the greater public. Black Rain was a partial revisit to Blade Runner's aesthetics and tone and failed to ignite the box-office, or develop that film's following. Garcia's Hollywood coronation ended up being somewhat muted, though he'd receive good ink for next year's Internal Affairs. opposite Richard Gere. Though remembered by few today, it was a small hit back in the 1990s. The rising star caught the attention of Francis Ford Coppola's third Godfather film, which was essentially a paycheck for the director whose best days were behind him. The movie delivered Garcia's sole Oscar nod to this day.

Garcia worked with a lot of hot properties at the time: Kenneth Branagh, Stephen Frears, Dustin Hoffman, Meg Ryan. But, most of Garcia's movies fizzled. He played supporting roles in his only minor hits at the time (Dead Again, When a Man Loves a Woman). When he was handed his first lead role in Jennifer 8, audiences and critics weren't impressed. His Steal Big Steal Little (where he played twins) and Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, flopped even harder. Sidney Lumet's Night Falls on Manhattan (1996) did okay, but wasn't enough to resurrect Garcia's leading man status, which had been spent at that point. By the early 2000s, he was doing straight-to-DVD. He was no longer attracting the level of talent he drew just a decade before.

Stephen Soderbergh hired him for the Ocean's franchise giving him some of the very few big hits of his career. He used the money to fuel passion products like For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, The Lost City, and City Island.

"Internal Affairs" was/is a good movie.

He was a major movie star, but Garcia never got to the level where he opened his own movie to great success, R11. Every film he opened flopped. His only hits were supporting roles in other people's films. Pitt, Cruise, and Bullock all had films early on where they were the main draw (Legends of the Fall, Top Gun, While You Were Sleeping, etc), and audiences showed up in a sizeable way, resulting in a stardom that spanned over decades.

by Anonymousreply 27November 2, 2022 6:06 AM

Yeah but when Richard Gere is blowing you off the screen, you have problems.

by Anonymousreply 28November 2, 2022 6:28 AM

Richard Gere could blow me off screen or on.

by Anonymousreply 29November 2, 2022 6:31 AM

"[R3] Benicio del Toro, Javier Bardem, Antonio Banderas?"

So one per decade as long as two thirds are from Spain?

by Anonymousreply 30November 2, 2022 6:36 AM

Yeah um...he wishes he looked like JFK jr lmao. OP is delusional with that comment. He looks more like Pacino if anything.

by Anonymousreply 31November 2, 2022 6:41 AM

oh yeah, Internal affairs was great. a few hot men in it.

by Anonymousreply 32November 2, 2022 6:48 AM

I thought he was great (and sexy) in WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN, as the long-suffering yet supportive husband of alcoholic Meg Ryan. The film was a hit and Ryan received Oscar buzz.

I've seen him in the gym locker room. Pretty much what one might expect from a Cuban male.

by Anonymousreply 34November 2, 2022 2:34 PM

One of Garcia's under the radar films. The Man from Elysian Fields. Hot Garcia as an escort. Worth a look.

by Anonymousreply 37November 2, 2022 3:27 PM

R34 how do you mean?

by Anonymousreply 38November 2, 2022 3:56 PM

JFK Jr was wayyyy better looking. I've seen both up close. JFK Jr was taller too! so fucking hot! I will never forget it. He was wearing a suit and he was getting off his bike and locking it away on a pole. Then he walked past me into a building. He looked like a million bucks and even much better hotter in person.

by Anonymousreply 39November 2, 2022 4:50 PM

I saw some pictures of him poolside and his back was as hairy as a gorilla's.

by Anonymousreply 40November 2, 2022 5:11 PM

r34, I’m also intrigued by your comment. How so?

by Anonymousreply 41November 2, 2022 5:44 PM

On what planet did young Garcia resemble JFK Jr, Helen Keller OP?

by Anonymousreply 42November 2, 2022 5:45 PM

Sooooo handsome when he was young

by Anonymousreply 43November 2, 2022 5:49 PM

I remember reading somewhere that he was very particular about not being cast as some love object. So, for those roles, he’d insist on appearing with a full beard, which, considering his hairiness, he could probably grow out in a week.

by Anonymousreply 44November 2, 2022 6:21 PM

Before I knew his name but started recognizing his face I truly thought he was Italian-American.

by Anonymousreply 45November 2, 2022 7:34 PM

R45

White/European Cubans are often mistaken for Italian-American. They have that in common with Puerto Ricans.

Cubans and Puerto Ricans have been marrying Italian Americans for generations. Common enough in Florida (especially south Florida), parts of NYC metro area, etc....

Far as men are concerned Cuban-Italian mix are often hot as fuck.

Bobby Cannavale is but an instance in point.

It happens with white latinos from any country tbh. I know a few Mexicans, Colombians, Venezuelans that can pass for Italian.

by Anonymousreply 47November 2, 2022 8:09 PM

He refused to do romantic, sexy roles because of his religious beliefs and his wife. So never really capitalised on his best assets

by Anonymousreply 48November 2, 2022 8:09 PM

Meh! For my money in his prime Armand Assante was far more hotter than Andy Garcia.
