I have had it with my shitty android with its slow data, accelerated battery life, attack ads. Next month I'm ready to go over to the dark side and go apple. IPhone users what are the pros? Is it difficult to transition from Android? It's my first time be gentle.
Why are iPhones better than Androids?

They are, because phones shouldn't have to give you a second thought.

I don't want to fight R1. I honestly just want a better phone lol.

Prestige
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 29, 2022 12:47 AM |
I've had both. They both have pros and cons. I went with Samsung because it's cheaper and it does everything I need and I don't care about "prestige"
Damn, I forget to pick up my BMW from the shop

So you're saying iPhones do 10 times more work R3? My android takes 5 minutes to even turn on.( I'm slightly exaggerating but 100%frustrated)

Whoops I meant R2. I didn't realize I responded to myself.

The iPhone takes better pictures than Android correct? That's what I've heard some say.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 29, 2022 12:54 AM |
R8, that is not true. It depends what phone you have. Samsung can take great pictures.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 29, 2022 12:59 AM |
Get an iPhone, but hold on to it. Don't try to "upgrade" every time a new one comes out. I have an old iPhone and it's been trouble-free.

Who cares about the nuances of a phone, like maybe a camera if you're so inclined, but beyond that, by an iphone and your covered for everything without a thought...

iPhone batteries do not last as long as Samsung batteries ( Iāve got one of each.)

I have both a Pixel and an iPhone. I like how well-integrated with Google services the Pixel is, but even though it's a newer model than my iPhone, it's nowhere near as snappy and responsive.
I do love the fingerprint sensor built into the screen, although it actually working is very hit or miss.

I have a S6 I bought on eBay for 150 bucks used 3 years ago and it still works great. It does take good pictures and Accubattery says it still has 77% battery capacity. I do have to charge it once a day or so.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 29, 2022 3:23 AM |
R14 I have an Iphone 6s and the only reason I'm upgrading is I've heard the 6s is not going to be supported in a couple years. Seems like most geek types prefer Android but I'm going to stick with what I know.

iPhone users, do you use Google apps or Apple apps mostly?
Google works better with Android, no?

R18, what kind of apps are you talking about?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 29, 2022 4:08 AM |
I have an iPhone because I started purchasing iPods during the 2000s. I eventually switched all my devices to Apple. I like that they sync. And they suit my needs.

I don't like phones without headphone jacks. it's such a scam, just to make us shell out more money for those earpods that are expensive and you will definitely lose over and over again.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 29, 2022 4:40 AM |
I think the 6s ends support next year. Anyway, buy a 2ndhand iPhone phone on Swappa. No need to get the latest and greatest.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 29, 2022 4:41 AM |
What Android phone do you have currently? Frankly it sounds like a complete piece of shit.
I have a mid range Samsung A31, it cost me about $450 about 3 years ago, you can pick them up for around US $250-270 now. Battery lasts 2 days except under extremely heavy use, only ever get slowness when I have marginal coverage, never had attack ads. And only time I ever have to turn it on/off is when I restart it, which I do once every couple of months whether I need to or not, takes 2-3 minutes
Oh and its got a headphone jack too
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 29, 2022 4:42 AM |
The syncing on the Apple devices is not always that great. I know it sounds silly, but my Safari bookmarks are really important and useful to me. I had a hard time with the syncing when I edited my bookmarks. Instead of the syncing with the newest "edit," it would revert to an older edit. Really frustrating.

I was rocking a fucking Blackberry until last year (yes, they were actually still making them), believe it or not. I still miss having actual buttons to press. The last few Blackberry phones that were manufactured had Android software and were dual touchscreen/physical keyboard, but I found the Android software to be very dodgy and glitchy. My phone would often freeze, power cycle for no reason, and the battery life was terrible. I briefly had a random Samsung phone at one point (also Android, obviously) and found it had similar problems.
I had owned a couple of iPhones over the years between having different Blackberrys (I had an iPhone 4 and later a 5S at one point). I finally relented and bought an iPhone 12 last year after I broke my Blackberry Key2. I have to admit, I have NEVER had any of the issues with iOS that I've had with Android-based devices. My iPhones have always been reliable, easy to use, and served me well.
I've also owned the same MacBook Pro since 2012, which has been a real workhorse and gotten me through college and grad school (and I am still using it as I type this). The only issue I had was that I noticed it getting painfully sluggish a couple of years ago, and found that the hard drive had started to fail (since it's an older model, it had an HDD, which has a limited lifespan). I went to Best Buy, bought an SSD, cloned it from my original hard drive, swapped them out, and the computer now runs like it's brand new. I've owned it now for a little over a decade.
In terms of user friendliness and reliability, I do believe Apple products are generally superiorāand this is not coming from an Apple fanboy.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 29, 2022 4:58 AM |
R25, I liked those Blackberries with the actual keys on the keyboard. I have pretty slim fingers, but I can't type on my iPhone very well.
Good for you for making those older Macs continue working. There was a guy on YouTube who preferred the older Mac laptops. I forgot why, though.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 29, 2022 5:03 AM |
R26 I have "normal" sized fingers and I have trouble typing on my iPhone at times as well.
As far as the MacBooks go, I've read that the generation of MacBook Pro that I have was one of the last of the "greats", according to some diehard Apple fans. They claim they were superior machines and that the subsequent models that have come since are lackluster, but I'm not exactly sure what the basis for that claim is eitherāI wouldn't know because I've not owned a newer model lol
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 29, 2022 5:07 AM |
Used to have iPhones but then I got tired of their batteries draining so quickly and Appleās planned obsolescence. I have a Samsung now.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 29, 2022 5:09 AM |
OP - Iāve only used apple products personally and professionally since 1990 so I assume that qualifies me as a āfanboyā or a fangeezer - whatever.
For people that are not very tech-inclined Apple stuff is simply easier to use because the design of the interface is more straightforward and intuitive (also usually more aesthetic as well but thatās gravy).
Case in point - my 85 year old mother can deal with her email and web browsing on her iMac - researching various stocks she likes to invest in and follow; read e-books, play Candy Crush and watch the Tennis Channel on her iPad; and text and make calls on her iPhone - all with not having a terribly clear idea of the nitty gritty - she still gets RAM and hard-drive āmemoryā confused and also refuses to look at her email on the phone or the iPad - thatās what the computer is for. She is the one dealing with the online research, booking and the printing out of boarding and luggage passes for her widows-group cruise next month, and she rarely needs my help with any of this.
Apple products and software tend to ājust workā as the old ad slogan went. For most of what I do on a computer - photos, email, web browsing, creating documents and simple spread-sheets I am 100% apple software guy - I use Mail and Pages / Numbers not Google or Microsoft products and Iāve had no major problems ā I will say Safari has become problematic so I now more often use Firefox or Chrome, and I prefer less bloat-heavy programs for other tasks - so I image edit in Acorn, not Photoshop. That Apple-Sphere isnāt perfect but things intergrate well and for most of what you want to accomplish the functionality is pretty intuitive and transparent - not buried in a Microsoft sub-sub-sub-menu.
My laptop and desktop computers last around 8 years before I want something faster, and these days iPhones will easily last 4 or 5 before you start to feel the need to upgrade.

I still miss my Windows 10 phone. It seemed to work better than Android at its most basic feature - as a phone. It felt solid and was pleasant to speak on, unlike Android which I always fear brushing the phone against my cheek will set off some uncontrollable feature.
Samsung contains all kinds of fancy bloatware like DEX - full Android desktop. Who the hell actually uses it though?
My hope is that Surface Phone 3 will be better, and will finally nail a cross between form, function, and price. Not holding my breath.

iOS is a closed proprietary operating system, so Apple can ensure that the hardware and software actually works and does what it claims to do. Android is standards-based, which makes it more susceptible to incompatibilities, security issues, and failure.

Iphones just work. They are a closed-loop ecosystem. Apple does not have to make a phone OS that run on multiple versions of hardware and memory. Apple also makes its own silicone. They are so good at it that they took the phone chip and put it in the MacBooks. The m1 and m2 were born out of Iphone. If you can use an Ipad you can use an Iphone. There is learning curve coming from android. I could not overcome it and went back to android.. No app drawer just drove my OCD crazy. I now use a pixel 7 pro and love it. The camera is light years beyond.

[quote]iOS is a closed proprietary operating system, so Apple can ensure that the hardware and software actually works and does what it claims to do.
You say that like it's a good thing. It's a closed proprietary system. It's a mono-culture, and mono-cultures are bad in both nature and tech. It's "one size fits all". Innovation is stifled because there's just ONE company involved. There are few options.
I much prefer OPEN systems, that use STANDARDS instead of proprietary bullshit like the "lightning cable", which is HORRIBLE (and super-slow compared to the current USB-C standard). I like the competition between companies to make good and better phones, to fill niche requirements and desires, etc.
Don't like the UI on Android? You can change it. You can choose from dozens, MANY dozens of different app launchers, different keyboards, different skins and themes. I always hated how the iPhone forced your icons to jam up to the top, moving them for you, not allowing any gaps. HATED IT. With Android I can put my icons wherever I want.
And Android has more and better features, and gets them YEARS before they ever come to iPhone.
And as for "intuitiveness", that's all bullshit. There is nothing more inherently intuitive about iPhones (or Macs) than any other phone or computer. I used an iPhone 3gs and 4 for years. Then went to Windows Phone for a while (still my favorite OS, but nobody wrote apps for it so it died), and then to Android. So I've used all of them. ALL involve a learning curve. And when a friend recently handed me their iPhone in order to look up something, I ended up just handing it back because I couldn't figure out what the fuck to do in the short time I had. When you're used to Android and Windows Phone, there's literally nothing "intuitive" about the iPhone.
If there's ANY drawback to Android, it's that unlike iPhone, one Android User handing their phone to another Android User might still be confusing to use, because they could be using an entirely different launcher, keyboard, etc. iPhones are all the same. Boring. Androids can be VERY diverse. And while conformists would consider that a drawback, I consider it a sign of just how much better Androids are. They can be tailored to your specific wants and needs. And I don't really want anyone else futzing with my phone.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 29, 2022 4:50 PM |
It amazes me that people are constantly upgrading their $1k IPhones - when the only significant improvements are photo quality. Why is everyone a professional photographer now? Why do I need super tech quality pictures? Every time a new one comes out I read the reviews to see if it could be worth it. And every time the main change is āit takes better picturesā - which very few people need to do. A bizarre waste of money for the average person - who is also living paycheck to paycheck.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 29, 2022 5:17 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 29, 2022 5:47 PM |
I don't get you, R58. You quoted me, said I was wrong, and then spent 5 paragraphs explaining why I'm right when I simply said that iOS is proprietary, avoiding all of the issues you griped about. I like competition, too, and that's why I'm happy that there are dozens of phones to choose from and you don't have to buy an iPhone (unless you want your phone to work, that is). I'm also happy that Apple doesn't just roll over and give the government (ours or any) access to my data without a warrant. In fact, I'd like Apple to build in an emergency-brick-my-phone feature such that if I'm ever apprehended (by the police or anyone) and they demand I unlock my phone, I just input the brick code and that's it, there's nothing for them to retrieve and the phone is worthless. I know, I have a bugaboo about privacy.
What I don't like about Apple is the way that they change the cables and connectors making my old peripherals obsolete. Not that everyone else doesn't do the same thing, but if I'm a dedicated iPhone user, it would be nice to use the same cables, docks and connectors from generation to generation. But at the end of the day, if tossing $100 worth of cables in the trash every 3 to 4 years is the price to keep my data away from prying eyes, it's a fair trade.

I've only owned an Iphone since 2009, switching every 3-5 years, currently 11ProMax. They're just so much more intuitive.
Batteries do decline after a year or so, nothing significant and even an aged 11's battery life is vast improved over my old 6 when it was new. $99 to get them replaced and add another 1-2 years.
No need to update every year and most who do never pay for them outright, they are basically installment payments that never end (Apple makes it easy to upgrade with incentives). Only people who seem to care are those who judge you depending on if you can make a $60/mo payment for a new phone for the rest of your life, so not worth it.
Was curious about Android once, but our know it all smart ass IT guy who's an Android fan can't shut up about them. Nothing he says impresses me about them.

As noted above, there are many flavors of android and if you get a cheap one, its gonna be slow. In tems of performance, if you spend the same amount of money on a samsung flagshipt as you would have to on an iphone then you get roughly equivelent hardware.
Apple doesnt really put out budget phones with one exception, the SE series. They usually deck out with all the chutzpa of a recent model flagship sans the phablet monster screen. You would think the "it just works" crowd would appreciate a small form factor. But them bitches just gotta blow it up. So you will never see an SE with a huge screen. Apple would be eating itself.

It doesn't matter whether you have an iPhone or an Android phone. Most good apps are available for both. I guess Apple takes privacy more seriously, though, so if that is important get an iPhone.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | October 30, 2022 5:27 AM |
iPhones are better. They are designed to be more secure and user friendly. You get what you pay for, and if you pay attention youāll quickly realize that most of the people who say that āApple is crapā are just cheapskates who are too cheap to buy an iPhone.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | October 30, 2022 5:30 AM |
I donāt get the whole āIphone users just like the prestigeā crap.
Everyone in NYC has an iPhone. It offers no prestige to the user here

I prefer samsung because they are not made in china.
I prefer not to buy anything made in china, if possible. I know it's superhard but I hate China.

R93 Please see my post.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | October 30, 2022 6:00 AM |
R94 thats part of the reason I bought a Samsung phone, mine is made in Vietnam.
Beware if you are buying a tablet though, Samsung tablets are all still made in China bar the top end ones. Partner bought a Samsung Tab A8, was disappointed to find it was made in China when I collected it. Possibly it was old stock though, and they will be made elsewhere going forward

With Androids I just, like, canāt.

Apple operating systems are unwieldy.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | October 30, 2022 1:22 PM |
R92 Except there's a whole bunch of Android phones that are more expensive than iPhones. Nice try though
by Anonymous | reply 99 | October 30, 2022 1:27 PM |
R99 Youāre right, but the people complaining about Apple arenāt buying those, and you know it.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | October 30, 2022 6:51 PM |
R13, if you get an iPhone, it tells you to replace the battery once it drops below 80% capacity. It is then officially "dead".
R14, Apple has already dropped support for the 6s and 7. No more updates.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | October 31, 2022 9:52 AM |
The problem with Androids is you have to rely on the manufacturer to update. Google only updates pixels and guarantees for three years of updates. When you buy an apple, it is updated by apple so most modern iPhones get updated.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | November 1, 2022 12:51 AM |
I have the Samsung Flip 3. It's so fetch.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | November 1, 2022 12:55 AM |
R102 - my Samsung gets regular updates.
Another thing I like about my Samsung is I can stream from my phone directly to other devices like my TV. I donāt require an Apple TV for that.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | November 1, 2022 1:02 AM |
iPhones aren't better... They're only better at marketing the same shit with a different number
by Anonymous | reply 105 | November 1, 2022 1:10 AM |

iPhones are less popular outside US
by Anonymous | reply 107 | November 5, 2022 6:16 AM |
Bottom line: iPhones are better if you don't want to think about the device, customize the device, etc. In my experience, they last longer (you will need to replace the battery at some point), and they have better tech advice (there are millions of "Apple fanboys" online ready to help with any problem).
by Anonymous | reply 108 | November 5, 2022 6:38 AM |
Because Androids are poor people phones. While it is true that there are some high end Androids, the majority of Android users are cheap asses who wouldnāt buy those.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | November 6, 2022 5:47 AM |
R109 Or smartasses who wouldn't spend $1000+ on a piece of plastic made in China, just because it has a logo of an apple on it and all the other people have it. When they can buy way better phone, cheaper.

People need to remember how the iPhone was birthed. The Ipad became the defacto tablet. Everyone wanted an Ipad and Apple thought "what if we made an Ipad that could make phone calls? They already had the iPod which was moved from a click-wheel device to a mini iPad version. From there they worked to incorporate the phone module and chips and boom the iPhone was born. Apple fans went nuts and had to have them and thus the Iphone craze was born. Google took a different apporach and developed a phone OS called android, similar to what Microsoft did. Rather than create the whole close loop hardware system ala Mac, they created the OS based on open source so it could work on a host of different hardware platforms. There is prestige in having the latest Iphone. "Oh you still have the 12?" is akin to "you must be poor,"

Neat development cycle, given that the original iPad came out in 2010, a full three years after the first iPhone.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | November 6, 2022 2:47 PM |
Apple is a closed system so everything just runs better. If you hate your android being slow, then yes: switch to Apple. I grew up in a PC household too with gaming boxes and stuff as far back as the late 80s.
More recent context:
I bought us a 12gb RAM HP laptop (around $950) in April 2020 because we needed a home machine. Seemed like a great deal because it was a good amount of ram for a notebook for minor work from home shit and basics like vacation planning. By this year it was consistently running like fucking GARBAGE: constant surprise updates, literal hour to boot, new bloat ware every timeā¦
I was swearing like a senior citizen at it all āback in MY day it would only update when I WANTED it to, Iām not doing anything on it I donāt even watch PORN on it why does it run like shit?!ā
I was so pissed I said fuck it and treated us to a new MacBook Air at 24GB ram and 1TB storage. Monster for a damn Air (not pro) but it runs like a dream and is SILENT with the SSD drive. Even my husband sat down to do something on it and said āI love this computerā even though weāve had no real experience with MacOS.

Samsung has fingerprint access - I didn't have to configure anything, it was just part of setting up the phone with an easy step by step tutorial (and I am a luddite!) I don't really care if a corporation has my fingerprints because they are already in a federal database due to former job requirements.

R110 No one ever seems to be able to explain how Androids are better past the point that they are cheaper. Or people love to say that they are ācustomizableā without explaining how.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | November 6, 2022 3:54 PM |
As well, you can replace your Samsung or other Android accessories with a variety of other off-brands and they usually work. Not the case with Apple.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | November 6, 2022 4:00 PM |
R116, I am the person who owns one of each. The android batteries last quite a bit longer. I don't find the Samsung operating system to be more challenging than the iphone. If budget is a concern you can get a pretty decent Android for little over $100. Off-brand accessories work with Androids. My iphone is great but I end up using the Android more - it's easier to use the keyboard.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | November 6, 2022 4:06 PM |
Iāve been using Apple products since 1989. Before the Mac OS came along, intuitive and user-friendly personal computing for non-nerds was practically non-existent. Sure, you could go to Radio Shack and buy a cheap PC, but if you compared the UIs for both, the PCs (w/Windows) were laughably crude compared to Appleās OS, and thatās not to mention trying to trouble-shoot them.
I find the iOS/Mac OS user experience to be significantly superior to anything PC/Android.
I remember when Steve Ballmer cackled so contemptuously over the original iPhoneās lack of a physical keyboard, and its limited sophistication compared to other cellphones of the time. However, over a relatively short period of time EVERY BUSINESS entering the newly exploding smartphone market began designing cellphones around the iPhone concept, because people were switching over to them in droves. The iPhone was directly responsible for the demise of the Blackberry.
I havenāt used an Android OS phone anytime recently, but I feel confident in saying theyāre conceived and designed for perpetual tinkerers, nerds, and people who are looking for cheaper alternatives.
iPhones are for people who want an unrivaled user experience, seamless interaction between Apple devices, and intuitiveness built in from the ground up in the OS.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | November 6, 2022 4:07 PM |
There are plenty of 3rd party/unofficial iPhone accessories/charges/cases/etc. You donāt HAVE to buy the official version, though time has taught me to do so, and plenty of others do the same.
Android phones do have some fun features I want and those Samsung phones take gorgeous photos.
But the bloat performance of anything PC/Android has, in my old age, rushed me into Appleās arms.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | November 6, 2022 4:07 PM |
Androids are more forgiving if you drop them.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | November 6, 2022 4:12 PM |
R114 Of course a 24 gb ram computer is going to be faster than a 12 gb computer.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | November 6, 2022 4:42 PM |
R116 And can you explain how iPhones are better? They don't have the best cameras, don't have the best batteries...

R123 see R119.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | November 6, 2022 4:49 PM |
This isnāt really related to the thread but I do find it odd when iPhone users buy off-brand accessories, especially third-party chargers that could damage the phone over a period of time. Why is it that they are willing to spend $1200 or more on a phone but arenāt willing to spend the extra $20 on a genuine charger? It reminds me of the days when people would buy an inkjet printer but buy the off-brand replacement cartridges and then blame the printer manufacturer when the cheap cartridges ruined the printer.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | November 6, 2022 4:54 PM |
R124 Being simpler doesn't mean being better. When there are phones that have better batteries, take better photos...how can iphones be seen as the best phones?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | November 6, 2022 5:40 PM |
R126 āBetter batteries.ā When the average person gets a new phone every two years or so, who cares? And better camera? Thatās debatable.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | November 6, 2022 5:51 PM |
R127 It's not debatable. iPhones maybe make the best videos, but there a couple of phones that make way better photos
by Anonymous | reply 128 | November 6, 2022 7:35 PM |
[quote]No one ever seems to be able to explain how Androids are better past the point that they are cheaper.
(rolling eyes)
Never mind this thread is full of examples... better cameras, features come to Android YEARS before they come to iPhone, longer battery life, and yes, customizations. You can choose from dozens of launchers, keyboards, and various look-and-feels. You can make your phone work the way you want, the way YOU find intuitive. You can turn off crap you don't like or that annoys you, and add new things that don't come with or aren't enabled by default.
And over-all, you'll spend less money, and won't be locked into a single company's ecosystem and mono-culture.
Monocultures are always bad... in nature, and in tech.

by Anonymous | reply 130 | November 6, 2022 11:19 PM |
It's not about cheaper. It's about value.
Much of the cost of apple products is the "smug tax".
Your response is part of that smugly arrogant attitude. You'd rather pay more for something that is years behind the curb because the logo means more to you than paying an actual fair price.

I have a $150 Motorola G Android phone. It works exactly as it should for internet, phone, and text, and my photos are widely celebrated. I find iPhones to be inscrutable, and both to be largely way too expensive for what you get.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | December 3, 2024 4:17 PM |
I had iPhones and was very happy with both of them, no complaints at all. I then switched to Google Pixel and have had three, I love them because they are completely trouble-free work horses that function elegantly, and require no fuss at all. They only reason I have upgraded three times is because I get a lot of use from the brillian cameras which I upgrade everytime there is a fundamental improvement and other generational issues like vast improvements to battery life, etc. Each of teh three I had for close to three years befroe upgrading - never for any better reason than I wanted the new stuff, not that anything had become sluggish, faulty, etc. Android system on a Google Pixel is even somewhat more invisible than Apple presence on an iPhone, you nbever half to do anything with it, it just works.
Attack ads IĀ“ve never had with iPhone nor with Google Pixel. It sounds like OP is moving from a mediocre old Android to a new top of the line phone. There shouldnĀ“t be anything but pros.
