Whatever Happened To…
1. Refrigerators on wheels. In the early 1990s, manufacturers were putting wheels on refrigerators to make them easier to move to clean behind.
2. Funeral fares. In the 1980s, airlines started offering discounted fares if you were traveling to a funeral of a close relative . You had to provide a death certificate after the travel was completed to get the discount credited to your card.
3. Airline price wars. The last one I remember was in the late 1980s. A major airline would announce that for a limited time, there would be a huge discount and suddenly the other airlines would follow to grab the business.

R5 A woman in my office got time off with pay to attend her grandmother's funeral in Virginia. Several months later, a co-worker who she thought was her friend, revealed the Obit she showed management was cut out of a newspaper for someone she didn't know. Refrigerator manufacturers realized it did indeed make it easier for people to roll the fridge away and clean behind it - including the coils and filters. So no more were breaking down, and no one was buying replacements. They realized they needed to make it harder once again - so the wheels came off.
As for airlines, the internet happened - and the price wars started on the internet. No more funeral fees or competitive fees - Find a great deal on one of the zillions of sites and book it.

Yeah the airfare thing was mostly caused by the internet, as well as the erstwhile McKinseyfying of the industry. Thanks to the internet, the airlines have such huge amounts of real-time data about demand that they are able to fluctuate pricing automatically to help maximize profits. No more need for sales or promotions or collusion.

For some time now most refrigerators sold in USA have moved to fan condenser systems with those devices either at bottom or on top of appliance. This as opposed to natural condenser systems with those familiar grilles on back of fridges. You only find latter today largely on budget, BOL or units offered for builders, landlords, etc.
Besides being more energy efficient fridges with bottom or top condenser systems don't need to be moved to clean condenser coils, hence no need for wheels.
Manufacturers of fridges like GE have come up with "never clean" condenser meaning one need not bother cleaning coils.

If you look around many old homes or buildings you'll still find where coal chutes once were located.
Here in NYC at least in Manhattan those steel doors in pavement in front of row houses or apartment buildings often lead to cellar and were used for coal deliveries as well.
In fact if you look around basements of older buildings and homes you can still find traces of apparatus used for when coal was used in boiler or furnace. In small number of places you still have coal left in bins or storage rooms long since closed off or whatever. When building switched over to oil or gas the coal wasn't needed, but there wasn't an easy (or particularly clean) way to get it out of basements so it was just left alone.

Torrid, hot-and-heavy public makeout sessions.
When I was a kid (70's), I used to see couples making out all over the place, and I would get so turned on. I couldn't wait to grow up and start making out myself.
The last time I saw couples making out in public was in Sao Paulo in the mid-00's, and it stood out to me because it'd been so long since I'd seen such a thing in the U.S., I'd forgotten it used to be a common thing.

Shake n Bake is still around. Walmart, Amazon and many other places sell it.
Stuff isn't so much used my many today because it's just mostly bread crumbs and seasonings, something many housewives and others knew already then and still do today.
There are many ways to make a breaded coating for use in any sort of baking; microwave, regular or convection oven. Best of all using one's own recipe allows leaving out certain things one rather not have.

Powdered coffee? You girls need to get out more, as the stuff still has a pretty decent following.
Don't normally consume "instant coffee" as a beverage, but use it for making all sorts of baked goods. Stuff does come in handy when traveling and want a decent quick hot cup of coffee. With right product and done properly some instant coffee is streets better than that K-Cup dreck hotels and motels offer as in room beverage.

The gay lisp?
It used to be the go-to gay speech pattern for femmes, but at some point it gave way to "gay voice" or "the gay accent".
The first openly gay man I ever met was a co-worker of mine at a restaurant (he was a waiter, I was a busboy), he couldn't have been swishier, and he had a full-on lisp. I remember one time he invited all the waitresses to his house for lunch, and behind his back those bitches were making so much fun of him, saying things like "he thinks he's one of the girls!" And nobody showed up to his girls lunch, and he was crushed!
It was tho thad!!!!

Gleem had one where the woman was supposed to read the product name on the box and she said, “Meegle? Oh, Gleem!” I always wondered if the woman was undiagnosed dyslexic or on drugs and why the Gleem people even continued to broadcast that ad.

Speaking of anti-bacterial and deodorant soap we must also mention as a "WEHT" Lifebuoy carbolic soap.
Nasty stuff....
For record same phenol compounds once were found in Lysol, but long since have been removed. If you look carefully at those brown bottles of Lysol sold today they don't have an EPA registration number, that's because phenol was either removed or is in such low concentration product no longer meets standards for registered disinfectant.

Wash Your Hands!
Mother was right, and it was the invention and widespread adoption of carbolic soap that helped push frequent handwashing. This in turn helped reduce spread of infections and diseases.

Other use of carbolic soap was one of first deodorant bars for personal hygiene.
It was advertisers for Lifebouy who came up with "B.O" (short for body odor) that began to appear in adverts by 1930's.
After carbolic was banned products moved onto hexachlorophene (Dial soap was one), and when that substance was banned in came triclosan. The last one is now banned in consumer products as well, so it remains to be seen what if anything will emerge next in the antibacterial craze.

"Airline price wars. The last one I remember was in the late 1980s. A major airline would announce that for a limited time, there would be a huge discount and suddenly the other airlines would follow to grab the business."
Airline price wars ended because carriers left standing realized how badly it hurt overall business.
There are only a handful of major carriers left in USA, and even less when it comes to legacy airlines. You've got American, Delta, United , Alaska and maybe few more. Southwest, Jet Blue and Spirit were all born as lower cost carriers to shake up the industry.
Carriers like People's Express and Tower Air who pioneered cheap flights (especially to Europe) didn't last.
Price wars made perhaps some sense after airline industry was deregulated. Previously carriers had to compete in other areas such as service, attractiveness of flight crew, etc... because rates were set by federal government. Once that cat was let out of bag it was race to bottom, and we've all seen the results.
Airlines largely no longer compete based upon service. Rather fitting as many passengers as possible onto a plane paying much as an airline can get seems norm. Hence flying coach for years is like taking a bus. You have to go business or first class to get any sort of decent flying experience where you're not treated like cattle.

Tagging onto R267 consider also in many markets there isn't same sort of competition there was years ago.
For many routes (especially international) out of certain airports you may have only a choice of one or two airlines. Even if there are a few or several not all may offer non-stop direct flights.

Robin Byrd made small fortune from those telephone sex chat or hook-up lines. Many were advertised during her show on public access television. They were also heavily advertised in gay media like HX, Next and other print. .
Sadly for Ms. Byrd and others arrival of personal computers, the internet and online chat rooms began to cut into telephone sex chat/hook-up line business. Soon the latter were all pretty much made redundant.
