Why did drag queens reading to kids become a thing?

Theres a tradition of drag queens in pantomime "Dame Twanky" is the character and kind of an exaggerated Mother Goose type.

RuPaul has a cartoon about drag kids - it's called Drag Tots.

I think it was about ten years ago that this little weird middle aged lesbian in Park Slope who was a Librarian told me she had been put in charge of bringing drag queens into Brooklyn public libraries to read to kids. She was enthused about in the way morons who always support the next thing are. I thought "This is her job?" and "This is a shitty idea. It will not end well." But I said to her "Oh, that's great!"

Drag queens are mainstream and have been for ages. RuPaul and drag queens were popular in the counterculture in the 1990s, and mainstream by 2009 when "Drag Race" started, so you've got a bunch of GenXers and Millennials who are parents now and who see no problem with their kids watching drag queens. And there isn't a problem with it these days; this is not the drag culture of decades past. Drag -- at least in the context of library events -- means someone dressed up in a costume.

What's happening is that the rightwingers have been trying to rejuvenate their attacks on LGBTs. They changed tactics after Obergefell because directly attacking gays and gay marriage wasn't a vote-getter, so they went after trans instead, as a kind of Trojan Horse to get back into a full-on attack on all LGBTs. Part of the way they're doing that is by equating drag with trans.

They've made some gains in mainstreaming the idea that trans are evil rapist predator pedos, mostly via the social media-to-Fox News pipeline. LibsofTikTok posts a video with commentary, and those videos that really take off end up on Tucker Carlson.

Most of that propaganda basically says "gay men in drag are exactly the same as trans, they dress up as women to sexualize children and because of a psychopathic fetish, this is why drag queen story hour is grooming your kids to be raped by evil trans and gays, and why gays shouldn't be allowed to teach, and why we have to protect the children" etc. etc.

The end result is that you get groups of rightwingers who are recruited on social media to go to a library, hospital, school, or what have you and scream "protect the children" while they hold up signs saying "GAY IS PEDO." They often have guns with them, too, because of course they do.

That's interesting, R12, but I'm 99% sure Drag Tots has not been referenced on any of the Drag Race shows.

I'll add another point: in just about every Drag Race season, there is a makeover challenge where the contestants have to put an outsider in drag. Sometimes the outsiders are women but most often they're men. Dads, straight athletes, gay athletes, gay veterans, eldergays, gay refugees, straight husbands-to-be, etc. As of 2022 they have not had kids coming in to be made over, but I'd put money on the idea having been bandied about by a well-meaning but braindead producer, and that bright idea being vetoed.

I'd also have to disagree with R19 on drag becoming mainstream by 2009 with the advent of the show. The show started off on Logo, a niche channel with limited reach, and didn't move to VH1 until five years ago for its ninth season. Not long after that, coincidentally or not, things like Drag Queen Story Hour really started taking off.

I went to a few drag performances in NYC back in the late 70s, one at a particularly good restaurant for Cuban food, best seafood Paella I ever had, but the drag performance just consisted of imitating Cher and others. Well done but nothing off color at all. It was really art.

Really it could be I was misled back then to think it was just an art because now it seems to be a haven for pedophiles.
