All the Greek Island Groups Individually and Uniquely Explained

Greece has more than 6,000 islands and islets under its name. Of these islands, 227 are inhabited. All of them are clustered in the Greek island groups.

Each has its own character. Some reflect a unique history or influences from antiquity to the middle ages, to modernity. Others combine Greek tradition with a sophisticated atmosphere. Yet most have beautiful beaches, coastal caves and world class cuisine.

The Greek islands are among the most unique on earth:

1. The Cyclades: the jewel of the Aegean Sea

2. The Sporades islands: the ”scattered” islands of the Aegean

3. The Greek Islands Of The Dodecanese Group

4. Saronic islands: the most sophisticated of all Greek island groups

5. Ionian islands: the tropical islands of the Greek island groups, strong Venetian influence

6. North Aegean islands: rich history, stunning beaches, strong local flavours

7. Crete: a Greek island group on its own

A map of the Greek islands follows on the next post...

^^Gorgeous photo. I have visited a few Greek islands. I want to go back. There are the most spectacular sunsets over the Aegean.

Am re-reading The Iliad (the Rieu) and this is basically Book Two. Just a fucking long boring list of names & places that stalls and breaks up the action of the plot completely. I almost skipped it, and barely took it in while reading it. I think catalogue is the worst thing about epic heroic poetry.

I read in a biography that in the 1920’s chartered a steam powered yacht to cruise around the islands. She invited friends and an historian for daily lectures on Homer and island history,

The Aegean is divine.

I've been visiting the Greek Islands since I was a child (1974 onwards), they were all a bit more unique back then.

But in the past 35 years they've all become a bit generic, if you were blindfolded and dumped on one, it'd be difficult to see much difference between them.
