Has anyone read this? It’s a good quick read and though the family didn’t cooperate a lot of his friends from his working years did and there’s some things I hadn’t read before.
When he was 15 his parents bought him a MG midget convertible and within 45 minutes of getting it he struck a bicyclist and fled the scene and never knew if he killed the guys or not and his family left Ibiza late that night.
The ex wife and mother of his child has put the narrative out that she was a sweet innocent victim that was torn away from Andy by drugs, his family and fame. According to old bandmasters and friends from Australia that wasn’t completely the case. Both families hated each other and Andy usually brought a friend with him when he picked up Kim (the ex) because her dad was so mean to him he was afraid of getting beat up.
She also had an identical twin and they would regularly play pranks on him to make him look stupid. A few friends came to see him and he gave them the key to his hotel to wait for him. Kim called them threatening to have them arrested and when Andy called a few hours later wondering where they were, they told him about what Kim had threatened and when he asked her why she did that, she got physical with him and he showed up side bite marks and bruises on his body.
According to Andy’s friends Kim didn’t tell him she was pregnant until over a month after she left the marriage.

R3 she wasn’t interviewed, but doesn’t come off too bad. He bought her a Porsche for Valentine’s Day and he found out she didn’t like that particular color so he pleaded with the car salesman to trade for a different color in the middle of the night which he did. They broke up a month later right after the 1982 peoples choice awards. I don’t think it would’ve lasted even if he didn’t have a drug problem. She wasn’t invested in the relationship the way he was. He was 24 going on 15.
Here’s the December 1983 interview he gave to Joan rivers on the tonight show. He’s pretty affable and light hearted and handled the questions well. Afterwards it went downhill. Unbeknownst to Gibb, Rivers was on the same flight to Montreal later that evening and Joan apparently lit into him through most of the flight and Andy almost refused to go onstage at a charity event he was so upset but was talked into it.
His last real manager was Jeff Witjas who was Betty Whites long time manager.

The payola in the industry at the time was crazy. Casey Kasem recorded his AT40 show before billboard released the chart rankings publicly. Kasem had finished recording AT40 and Gerry Raffertys “Baker Street” has just knocked Gibbs “Shadow Dancing” out of the number one spot and Kasem recorded the show reflecting that Rafferty had the new number one. Not long afterwards AT40 got a frantic call from Billboard telling them that Shadow Dancing was still number one despite Kasem having the official charts in his hand. Kasem had to go back into the studio to redo that part of the countdown.
Gibbs label had been tipped off that Baker Street would be the new number one and contacted billboard and threatened to pull Gibb out as the featured performer for Billboards Disco convention which was one of their biggest events that year.
Shadow Dancing stayed at number one for seven weeks wile Baker Street was number 2 for six weeks on the billboard charts despite the fact that it had gone number one in the other 2 big trade publications (cash box and record world)
