Why don't women wear curlers in their hair anymore?

You had to be really down at the heel to wear curlers out in public back in the day.

Where were clips like r4 and r5 screened? High schools?

Damn you r2, I almost peed in my bed. I haven't heard that phrase in a long time. I can almost hear my mom and aunts gossiping. Brought me back to good times.

My late mother considered any woman who went outdoors in curlers (especially out shopping), to be the most appalling TRASH!

I remember my mother thinking that a woman who wore curlers in public was poor white trash. It just wasn’t done. Even when the woman had a scarf over the curlers and nobody could see them, it was still considered bad taste.

Same as smoking on the street.

The spectacle on screen of Divine in curlers could have been the beginning of the end. Thanks John Waters!

Exactly, r10.
And eating on the street.

r6 yes and sometimes younger especially as the times quickly progressed, along with immigration services, employment offices, youth organizations, etc. it also appeared in even some movie theatres, especially in rural towns.

r6 Well, not r4 save for movie theatres. It's possible someone might have recommended it while counseling newlyweds and other temperamental relationships. But it was essentially softcore porn that passed the smut test to be shown wider than more risque films.

I wouldn’t know about such things. I have naturally curly hair.

Our Samantha would NEVER be caught in public with curlers in HER hair.

Hot curlers and curling irons became available. I remember my mother's hair dryer with a hose running to a shower-cap like bonnet. Game shows awarded those big dryers like at salons which were desirable because they dried hair quickly.
