I point all this to say Anthony Hopkins is widely regarded as the main star of Silence of the Lambs.

From way back when I was a kid: Sean Penn completely stole the movie Taps out from under Timothy Hutton, who was supposed to be the star. Oddly, even Tom Cruise, who had an even smaller role in that film, was more memorable than the titular star.

Rupert Everett was definitely the scene-stealer of MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING.
That "Say a Little Prayer" brunch scene was talked about/imitated endlessly that summer of 1997.
He even received Oscar buzz, because the movie was such a big hit.
Among the year's Top 10 grossers.

As others have already said here, mostly people names supporting performances they like. I guess op was aiming at what R175 says - supporting turns that seem to be looming over the films they're in. As for "stealing" - sometimes the films are meant to be gravitated toward a smaller in scale performance, the way TSotL raison d'être is Hopkins (supporting) turn as Hannibal Lecter, so no crime or misdemeanor was committed there. Marisa Tomei in MCV, otoh, is the definition of a movie stealing.

R119 - Easy as rolling off a log: the three leads were dreadful. CZJ never made it as a dancer because she was one step beyond Ruby Keeler in actual dancing talent; Gere can neither sing nor dance, he was just there as the marquee name; Zellwegger managed to fake it enough, she's a trouper, but you could see it was all smoke and mirrors the moment the chorus began to move and you could see that every girl in the line really could outdance CZJ, let alone RZ. QL, all right. But the three leads?
Reilly's heartfelt performance outshone theirs so brightly you could see it from Outer Space.

I agree with others that this isn't about who had a very good supporting role in a film with multiple good performances. This is about having a "Jesus, God, what was THAT?!" moment in a movie that just obliterated everyone else in the cast.
Madeline Kahn, Thelma Ritter, and Mary Wickes were masters of the craft, but my choice is for what, on paper, is probably the most obscure role: James Badge Dale as (literally) "Gaunt Young Man" in Flight. That's the movie with drunk pilot Denzel Washington flying the plane upside down. JBD is a patient he meets smoking the stairwell of the hospital and that one scene is definitely the high point of the entire movie.

by Anonymous | reply 304 | October 26, 2022 7:36 PM |
R304 I guess it depends on whether you think those performances overwhelmed the stars or the movie.
I never saw Goodfellas, but in the other three I don't think they did overwhelm anything. Anne Bancroft won the Oscar so who thought she was overwhelmed? The movie seemed balanced. Anyway, Patty was more like a lead. .
Angela Lansbury was good in TMC but it's not like she wiped Sinatra, Lawrence Harvey and Janet Leigh off the screen, exactly. I'm not as impressed with her in that film as most people are, but I know that's just me.

Janet Leigh's character was unnecessary, Harvey was intentionally robotic, and Sinatra was fine, but Lansbury was a memorable villain.

Jack Lemmon defintitely didn't steal Bell, Book And Candle. His part was forgettable. I don't even get why he was cast in such a nothing part. One of the stinky things about being under contract to a studio (Columbia). He was already an Oscar winner for Mister Roberts and had played leads. Kim Novak had played a supporting role to him, previously.

R432 She was a big star, but there was no such a thing as a Janet Leigh film. She usually played the wife or girlfriend of the hero or leading man in such things as Houdini, The Vikings, Pete Kelly's Blues, Living It Up (Martin & Lewis film) etc. She didn't usually carry a movie herself.

Speaking of John Hughes movies, Pretty In Pink - not directed by John Hughes but maybe written by him - had that awful supporting performance by John Cryer that every critic seemed to think stole the movie and would lead to major stardom.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | November 13, 2022 5:13 PM |
John Hughes evidently had it in for RDJ after Molly told him she wanted RDJ for the Duckie role. He gave it to Cryer and rewrite the ending so Molly hooked up with Andrew's character. He then cast RDJ as a villain in Weird Science and evidently filmed or planned to film a scene where the character is degraded that was so unfunny an d cruel that the producers made him cut it.
No idea if RDJ copped to the latent hostility or, if he did, gave a shit either way.
Jealousy is a strange, strange thing.
by Anonymous | reply 458 | November 13, 2022 5:29 PM |
R458 I understand all that except Hughes re-writing the ending so JC wouldn't end up with Molly. That had nothing to do with RDJ, did it? Anyway I thought the studio demanded that ending.
by Anonymous | reply 459 | November 13, 2022 5:32 PM |
Molly seemed to think it was up to Hughes and that he favored her pairing off with Duckie - until she told him that she would like RDJ cast as it made the pairing more believable to her.
The red mist evidently descended.
Duckie was a stand-in for Hughes and Cryer was nerdy enough that Hughes felt comfortable with him. RDJ, not so much.

Almost half the names here were not really supporting but at the center of the films they were named in.

Also one example of what I would consider a supporting actor that stole the movie would be Alan Cumming in Eyes Wide Shut. Played the hotel desk clerk and it was the first time I saw him. Too bad he didn't have a bigger later career.

I loved Alan Cumming as the third-tier mutant in X-Men United. He was my favorite part of the movie.

R3 They were terrific, but I wouldn't say they stole the movie.

Oh, god yes. You can MARY! me for this all you want, but her performance is a master class on how to act in a horror movie. She spends her entire scene acting against NOTHING, and just knocks it out of the fucking park.

I don't think Drew stole the movie because once her scene was over I forgot about her.

I WAS STARRING AND EPONYMOUS!

OP Herr Waltz's performance was a lead to be honest. He chewed the scenery in every scene and hammed it up beyond belief. Waltz didn't steal any film,Tarantino and Whalestein gave him the film!

Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross
by Anonymous | reply 523 | December 7, 2022 2:31 PM |
R523 - Baldwin entered that scene, stole it beautifully, then left.
He should have received a supporting nomination.
