R35, I'm bewildered by your comment. I said I agree. Do you realize billed is wo is considered the film's star and is usually promoted as the lead; it is independent from the characters in which they place. Usually the actor who receives top billing is the main character.

I point all this to say Anthony Hopkins is widely regarded as the main star of Silence of the Lambs.

Al Pacino was not supporting in the Godfather...wtf?

by Anonymousreply 98October 23, 2022 6:59 AM

R98 here Yes, I am aware he was nominated as supporting but sometimes the Academy has a weird way of diferentiating the 2. Yes Brando was the big name but essentially he was more suporting than Pacino.

by Anonymousreply 104October 23, 2022 7:41 AM

Definitely Tom Wilkinson in Michael Clayton. Someone needs to hand that man an Oscar soon; he's a brilliant actor.

From way back when I was a kid: Sean Penn completely stole the movie Taps out from under Timothy Hutton, who was supposed to be the star. Oddly, even Tom Cruise, who had an even smaller role in that film, was more memorable than the titular star.

Rita Moreno and George Chakiris in "West Side Story".

Cheetah in the Weismuller "Tarzan" films (but who cared looking at Jim?)

Jessie Royce Landis in To Catch a Thief

by Anonymousreply 123October 23, 2022 2:40 PM

R105 That’s the letdown that killed my career. After my Oscar win, I was only as good as my next part. And those two assholes stole my spotlight and my career!

Some of yall are just mentioning strong supporting performances in an overall good film with good acting. But they did not steal the film. Sally Fields did not steal Mrs. Doubtfire, Robin Williams was brilliant in the role. Or Forrest Gump for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 174October 24, 2022 8:18 AM

Rupert Everett was definitely the scene-stealer of MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING.

That "Say a Little Prayer" brunch scene was talked about/imitated endlessly that summer of 1997.

He even received Oscar buzz, because the movie was such a big hit.

Among the year's Top 10 grossers.

by Anonymousreply 175October 24, 2022 8:33 AM

As others have already said here, mostly people names supporting performances they like. I guess op was aiming at what R175 says - supporting turns that seem to be looming over the films they're in. As for "stealing" - sometimes the films are meant to be gravitated toward a smaller in scale performance, the way TSotL raison d'être is Hopkins (supporting) turn as Hannibal Lecter, so no crime or misdemeanor was committed there. Marisa Tomei in MCV, otoh, is the definition of a movie stealing.

R119 - Easy as rolling off a log: the three leads were dreadful. CZJ never made it as a dancer because she was one step beyond Ruby Keeler in actual dancing talent; Gere can neither sing nor dance, he was just there as the marquee name; Zellwegger managed to fake it enough, she's a trouper, but you could see it was all smoke and mirrors the moment the chorus began to move and you could see that every girl in the line really could outdance CZJ, let alone RZ. QL, all right. But the three leads?

Reilly's heartfelt performance outshone theirs so brightly you could see it from Outer Space.

I agree with others that this isn't about who had a very good supporting role in a film with multiple good performances. This is about having a "Jesus, God, what was THAT?!" moment in a movie that just obliterated everyone else in the cast.

Madeline Kahn, Thelma Ritter, and Mary Wickes were masters of the craft, but my choice is for what, on paper, is probably the most obscure role: James Badge Dale as (literally) "Gaunt Young Man" in Flight. That's the movie with drunk pilot Denzel Washington flying the plane upside down. JBD is a patient he meets smoking the stairwell of the hospital and that one scene is definitely the high point of the entire movie.

[Quote]Most of the time, Hollywood is careful not to let a supporting performance overwhelm the star, and the movie.

and how does Hollywood do that when a role such as Patty Duke in The Miracle Worker, Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate, Whoopi in Ghost, Joe Pesci in Goodfellas . . .is absolutely essential to the film?

by Anonymousreply 304October 26, 2022 7:36 PM

R304 I guess it depends on whether you think those performances overwhelmed the stars or the movie.

I never saw Goodfellas, but in the other three I don't think they did overwhelm anything. Anne Bancroft won the Oscar so who thought she was overwhelmed? The movie seemed balanced. Anyway, Patty was more like a lead. .

Angela Lansbury was good in TMC but it's not like she wiped Sinatra, Lawrence Harvey and Janet Leigh off the screen, exactly. I'm not as impressed with her in that film as most people are, but I know that's just me.

Whoopi - did she erase the love story of Patrick and Demi?

[Quote]Whoopi - did she erase the love story of Patrick and Demi?

Janet Leigh's character was unnecessary, Harvey was intentionally robotic, and Sinatra was fine, but Lansbury was a memorable villain.

And Whoopi was more interesting than the bland leads.

by Anonymousreply 308October 26, 2022 9:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 309October 26, 2022 9:45 PM

[quote]And Whoopi was more interesting than the bland leads.

To you perhaps, but GHOST was the #1 movie of 1990 *because* of the love story. The pottery scene alone was more memorable to many than Whoopi who indeed was excellent but she did not steal the movie from the leads.

by Anonymousreply 310October 26, 2022 10:03 PM

Disagree. Whoopi stole scenes, that's why we're always saying "____, you in danger, girl!"

Jack Lemmon defintitely didn't steal Bell, Book And Candle. His part was forgettable. I don't even get why he was cast in such a nothing part. One of the stinky things about being under contract to a studio (Columbia). He was already an Oscar winner for Mister Roberts and had played leads. Kim Novak had played a supporting role to him, previously.

R432 She was a big star, but there was no such a thing as a Janet Leigh film. She usually played the wife or girlfriend of the hero or leading man in such things as Houdini, The Vikings, Pete Kelly's Blues, Living It Up (Martin & Lewis film) etc. She didn't usually carry a movie herself.

by Anonymousreply 435November 11, 2022 3:49 PM

It was brilliant for Hitchcock to kill off Janet Leigh in the first half hour of Psycho. People were absolutely shocked and that shower scene is iconic.

Rules of Attraction is full of hilarious out-of-nowhere supporting/cameo performances, but the guy who plays Richard/Dick was the most memorable of a solid bunch - and he was playing against DL icon Faye Dunaway to boot.

by Anonymousreply 454November 13, 2022 11:23 AM

R452, Spike! Yes!

by Anonymousreply 455November 13, 2022 11:57 AM

R451 Okay, calm down. I don't think he stole the movie, though. I think Anthony Michael Hall stole the movie. Wasn't Michael Shoeffling kind of the lead, anyway?

by Anonymousreply 456November 13, 2022 5:03 PM

Speaking of John Hughes movies, Pretty In Pink - not directed by John Hughes but maybe written by him - had that awful supporting performance by John Cryer that every critic seemed to think stole the movie and would lead to major stardom.

by Anonymousreply 457November 13, 2022 5:13 PM

John Hughes evidently had it in for RDJ after Molly told him she wanted RDJ for the Duckie role. He gave it to Cryer and rewrite the ending so Molly hooked up with Andrew's character. He then cast RDJ as a villain in Weird Science and evidently filmed or planned to film a scene where the character is degraded that was so unfunny an d cruel that the producers made him cut it.

No idea if RDJ copped to the latent hostility or, if he did, gave a shit either way.

Jealousy is a strange, strange thing.

by Anonymousreply 458November 13, 2022 5:29 PM

R458 I understand all that except Hughes re-writing the ending so JC wouldn't end up with Molly. That had nothing to do with RDJ, did it? Anyway I thought the studio demanded that ending.

by Anonymousreply 459November 13, 2022 5:32 PM

Molly seemed to think it was up to Hughes and that he favored her pairing off with Duckie - until she told him that she would like RDJ cast as it made the pairing more believable to her.

The red mist evidently descended.

Duckie was a stand-in for Hughes and Cryer was nerdy enough that Hughes felt comfortable with him. RDJ, not so much.

by Anonymousreply 460November 13, 2022 5:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 461November 15, 2022 3:56 PM

Janet Leigh was a leading actress in one major film after another, maybe for a decade, but totally bland and forgettable in each. It was only in Psycho that her inner natural identity was brought out and everyone knew her after that.

by Anonymousreply 462November 15, 2022 4:07 PM

Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle. Yes I know you bitches hate her but I’m right.

by Anonymousreply 463November 15, 2022 4:11 PM

Janet Leigh was a star with her first film (1947), she was a good actress, beautiful, and had a great body, as well. She was married to Tony Curtis and they were the Hollywood couple of the 50s. She wasn't forgettable, she was a big fan favorite. She was on hundreds of magazine covers.

by Anonymousreply 464November 15, 2022 6:03 PM

Gedde Watanabe was the one who stole "Sixteen Candles."

by Anonymousreply 465November 15, 2022 6:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 466November 15, 2022 9:51 PM

Almost half the names here were not really supporting but at the center of the films they were named in.

by Anonymousreply 502December 6, 2022 12:29 PM

Also one example of what I would consider a supporting actor that stole the movie would be Alan Cumming in Eyes Wide Shut. Played the hotel desk clerk and it was the first time I saw him. Too bad he didn't have a bigger later career.

by Anonymousreply 503December 6, 2022 12:35 PM

I loved Alan Cumming as the third-tier mutant in X-Men United. He was my favorite part of the movie.

[quote]Drew Barrymore in SCREAM

Oh, god yes. You can MARY! me for this all you want, but her performance is a master class on how to act in a horror movie. She spends her entire scene acting against NOTHING, and just knocks it out of the fucking park.

by Anonymousreply 510December 7, 2022 1:33 AM

I don't think Drew stole the movie because once her scene was over I forgot about her.

by Anonymousreply 511December 7, 2022 1:46 AM

I was NOT supporting!

I WAS STARRING AND EPONYMOUS!

by Anonymousreply 512December 7, 2022 1:54 AM

Albert Finne, as the boob-loving Ed Masry in Erin Brockovich.

by Anonymousreply 520December 7, 2022 6:11 AM

OP Herr Waltz's performance was a lead to be honest. He chewed the scenery in every scene and hammed it up beyond belief. Waltz didn't steal any film,Tarantino and Whalestein gave him the film!

by Anonymousreply 521December 7, 2022 6:15 AM

R513, What?

by Anonymousreply 522December 7, 2022 12:34 PM

Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross

R523 - Baldwin entered that scene, stole it beautifully, then left.

He should have received a supporting nomination.

by Anonymousreply 525December 7, 2022 4:48 PM

Brittany Murphy in Clueless

by Anonymousreply 526December 7, 2022 4:56 PM

I preferred Alec Baldwin's SNL replay of the same scene on The North Pole ("Always be cobbling").

by Anonymousreply 527December 7, 2022 5:32 PM

Jack Palance in City Slickers. Jack Palance in The Silver Chalice (not worth stealing, but he stole it). Angela Lansbury in All Fall Down. James Stephenson in The Letter.

Annette Bening in American Beauty. The film has aged horribly, but Bening's performance is like DL brought to life.

by Anonymousreply 531December 27, 2022 8:10 AM

R530 she's not a supporting performance though.

by Anonymousreply 532December 27, 2022 2:38 PM

Bening's OTT performance is what has aged the worst in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 533December 28, 2022 5:05 PM

(^.^) aged worse than the gay neighbors?

by Anonymousreply 534December 29, 2022 1:36 AM
