Full trailer drops for "The Crown," season 5

Olivia Williams looks great as Camilla. Elisabeth Debicki looks and moves exactly like Diana (except she's taller). Jonathan Pryce and Dominic West look very little like Philip and Charles (Pryce is much too short and has a rounder face, West is too handsome). Imelda Staunton looks more like the queen than I would have thought, despite their very different noses, and does her voice really well.

Lots of images of Diana being sad. There's a quick shot of her, the Queen, Princess Margaret and another older woman (the Queen Mother?) wearing all black at a funeral, but who would it be for? (The show covers the events of 1989-1997, before Dian's death.)

The actors playing Charles and Camilla are WAY too goodlooking while the actress playing Diana is not nearly attractive enough.

by Anonymousreply 1October 20, 2022 6:13 PM

Not attractive enough? Debicki is very pretty.

by Anonymousreply 2October 20, 2022 6:15 PM

You'd be hard pressed to find an actress in the UK who looks more like Diana in her 30s than does Elisabeth Debicki.

Sorry, r1.

by Anonymousreply 3October 20, 2022 6:50 PM

Their advertising tagline is a bad choice: "The Beginning of the End."

I'm sure they mean that to refer to Diana heading towards her death, but it comes across now as referring to the Queen's death.

by Anonymousreply 4October 20, 2022 6:52 PM

Agree OP, Staunton seems surprisingly better than I thought she would be. Hopefully, she’s an improvement on Olivia Colman (who I’ve appreciated in other roles) who disappointed in Foy’s footsteps.

West doesn’t come off in the trailer as a convincing Charles, and the actress portraying Diana seems odd. Not familiar with her, but I also don’t find her attractive as Diana for some reason.

This recent iteration of The Crown has generated controversy, and it’s not even out yet. With the Queen’s death, the debacle that is composed of The Harkles, and the implosion of Liz Truss damaging the UK, I am in two minds about giving Netflix clicks for this season; even though I eagerly watched all the prior series.

by Anonymousreply 5October 20, 2022 7:16 PM

What royal funeral occurred between 1989 and 1995 (after which Diana was not a part of the royal family)? Or would they all be at a funeral for a prime minister?

by Anonymousreply 6October 20, 2022 7:31 PM

Agree, I never found Diana pretty, but she had an IT factor and was attractive. This actress has none of those things. That said, I just saw the trailer and it looks good. I only like the show in the Diana years.

by Anonymousreply 7October 21, 2022 3:48 AM

Well, you cannot exactly replicate a historical figure in casting a movie, though Dataloungers remain convinced somehow you can if you just try hard enough.

by Anonymousreply 8October 21, 2022 4:07 AM

Jonathan Pryce is terrible casting as Philip. Philip had the arrogance of someone who was considered to be extremely handsome back in the day. Pryce is not handsome at all. He would have been perfect as the sinister Tory pervert Peter Mandelson, though.

by Anonymousreply 9October 21, 2022 4:25 AM

West is good looking? News to me.

by Anonymousreply 10October 21, 2022 4:35 AM

Compared to the real King Charles III, Dominic West is Adonis himself.

How many more seasons are they planning? I know they said they weren't going up to the modern day but given the old girl was still living when they said that I wonder if they can resist the temptation of doing the beginning to the bitter end.

by Anonymousreply 12October 21, 2022 4:51 AM

r12, they're only planning to do six seasons, and they have said recently the show will end with the marriage of Charles and Camilla in 2005.

If the show does go beyond six seasons, it will likely not be with the current showrunner and show creator Peter Morgan in charge. He has been adamant it is too hard to do his story about the Queen without about two decades more or less between himself and the events he is describing. Dataloungers have repeatedly said they don't believe that because they think the story of Harry and Meghan is just too enticing (because it would be to them!), but Morgan has also said he is especially not interested in dramatizing the Harry and Meghan circus.

by Anonymousreply 13October 21, 2022 5:22 AM

Who plays Weather-Beaten Old Whore Cunt this time around?

by Anonymousreply 14October 21, 2022 5:28 AM

The late Alan Rickman would have been a good Philip.

by Anonymousreply 15October 21, 2022 5:41 AM

For a second, I thought you were proposing him for Camilla (!!)

by Anonymousreply 16October 21, 2022 5:46 AM

[quote] Who plays Weather-Beaten Old Whore Cunt this time around?

Kate's not in it this season.

by Anonymousreply 17October 21, 2022 5:48 AM

Alan Rickman would have been wrong for Philip. Way too short, for starters.

It should have been Charles Dance. I don’t care if he already played Mountbatten in an earlier season.

by Anonymousreply 18October 21, 2022 5:57 PM

The voice may say Her Majesty, but the face says Dolores Umbridge.

by Anonymousreply 19October 21, 2022 6:10 PM

I imagine some Kent or Gloucester might have died in that timeframe.

by Anonymousreply 20October 21, 2022 6:14 PM

The British government itself requested Netflix put a disclaimer on The Crown that it wasn't actual history the other year and got told no. Charles calls in a favour from Judi Dench and it happens the next day. Is she a mafia don?

[quote]Agree, I never found Diana pretty, but she had an IT factor and was attractive. This actress has none of those things.

Debicki can be quite magnetic on screen. I’m interested to see what she does with the role.

by Anonymousreply 22October 22, 2022 1:08 PM

Daddy Dominic🤤

by Anonymousreply 23October 22, 2022 1:12 PM

Mandelson is a LABOUR politician r9. By "sinister pervert", do you mean homosexual?

by Anonymousreply 24October 22, 2022 1:15 PM

R5, I thought the problem was that the actress was so much more conventionally pretty than Diana.

With her weird nose, Diana was never going to be a conventional beauty.

It was impeccable styling that made her a beauty.

by Anonymousreply 25October 22, 2022 1:30 PM

Casting for this is a disaster. They just took the first people to show up at the auditions?

"She'll do."

by Anonymousreply 26October 22, 2022 1:31 PM

"The Crown" Season 8 is a re-eanctment of the Royal Family's highs and lows THE DAY AFTER they occur.

Almost in real time, but the producers need 24 hours to script and shoot the episodes.

by Anonymousreply 27October 22, 2022 1:42 PM

The trailer makes it very clear; Phillip did have Diana assassinated.

by Anonymousreply 28October 22, 2022 1:43 PM

I was shocked when I found out that Olivia Colman was "posh" she doesn't style herself that way.

by Anonymousreply 29October 22, 2022 1:45 PM

"Bittersweet Symphony," nice choice of background music. Debicki looks close enough and can probably act. I'll reserve final judgment until I watch, but she seems a bit chilly, lacking Diana's winsome quality. Also, she's too thin; in this "revenge dress" photo she looks like a chicken wing.

by Anonymousreply 30October 22, 2022 1:47 PM

R13 He probably doesn't know quite how to handle the Harry and Meghan saga, too many landmines, he doesn't want to get canceled.

by Anonymousreply 31October 22, 2022 1:52 PM

Basically remake BAPS but with one girl instead of 2.

by Anonymousreply 32October 22, 2022 1:53 PM

R9 Why do you say Peter Mandelson a pervert?

by Anonymousreply 33October 22, 2022 1:54 PM

I stand corrected about Mandelson being a Labour politician, not a Tory.

I labeled him a “sinister pervert” because I thought there were rumors that he hired under age rent boys.

by Anonymousreply 34October 22, 2022 6:33 PM

Debicki looks more like Tina Brown than Diana.

by Anonymousreply 35October 22, 2022 6:37 PM

Very few women can carry off that Diana hairstyle.

by Anonymousreply 36October 22, 2022 6:43 PM

I've never heard of those rumours, r34.

by Anonymousreply 37October 22, 2022 6:49 PM

Can Helena Bonham-Carter return as the ghost of Princess Margaret?

by Anonymousreply 38October 22, 2022 7:04 PM

If Jonathan Pryce and Dominic West are involved, I will watch

by Anonymousreply 39October 22, 2022 7:11 PM

Debicki is pretty and a great actress, so I’m sure she can pull off the role. However, Diana had an athletic body that looked great in clothes. In all the promotional photos I’ve seen, Debicki looks like a twig.

by Anonymousreply 40October 22, 2022 8:07 PM

Why did Diana sound Australian?

by Anonymousreply 41October 22, 2022 10:04 PM

To me, Staunton is the best-cast of the 3 Queen Elizabeths in the series so far. She's been one of my favorite actresses foryears.

by Anonymousreply 42October 22, 2022 10:39 PM

I just don’t know if I can get past her Vera Drake, I’m going to be looking at the Queen, but thinking she’s an abortionist?

by Anonymousreply 43October 22, 2022 10:43 PM

R41 Elizabeth Debicki is Australian, not that that’s an excuse. I assume that she was going for an aristocratic drawl.

by Anonymousreply 44October 22, 2022 10:49 PM

OP rather than at a funeral it’s possible that they were all at Remembrance Sunday where the dress code is black.

by Anonymousreply 45October 22, 2022 10:54 PM

Ay nay, she sounds Australian?

by Anonymousreply 46October 22, 2022 10:55 PM

Imelda Staunton looks like Mrs. Patmore's long lost sister, too plebeian.

by Anonymousreply 47October 22, 2022 11:04 PM

Agree, Staunton looks like she should be scrubbing dishes in the kitchen, too common to be queen

by Anonymousreply 48October 22, 2022 11:38 PM

Colman played the Queen as if she were clinically depressed, always that forlorn look in her eyes. Her BROWN eyes, The Queen had blue eyes! Aren't there coloured contacts for such things?

by Anonymousreply 49October 22, 2022 11:39 PM

I gather that there were discussions between Morgan and Colman re contacts and Morgan decided it would be OK for Colman not to wear them.

by Anonymousreply 50October 23, 2022 3:34 AM

Could color contacts actually make dark brown eyes look like any kind of blue other than a very dark blue? If that's the case maybe they felt it wasn't worth it.

by Anonymousreply 51October 23, 2022 4:04 AM

Don’t it make my brown eyes blue.

by Anonymousreply 52October 23, 2022 4:17 AM

If the fire is a big element in this then there’s got to be a substantial bit of Edward in it as well, as he helped evacuate artworks during the conflagration. Who is playing him? Perhaps that music chap all the young people are so in love with Harry Styles?

by Anonymousreply 53October 23, 2022 4:20 AM

Haven't watched "The Crown" since season two. This "following Diana into the tunnel" thing doesn't encourage me to go back to it.

by Anonymousreply 54October 23, 2022 4:24 AM

[quote] I gather that there were discussions between Morgan and Colman re contacts and Morgan decided it would be OK for Colman not to wear them.

Morgan said they tried both colored contacts and CGI to change the color of Colman's eyes, and everyone agreed in the end it hampered her expressivity with her eyes too much. So they deicded to keep them the same color as they are in real life.

by Anonymousreply 55October 23, 2022 4:27 AM

That was Andrew, R53.

by Anonymousreply 56October 23, 2022 4:30 AM

West doesn’t play a convincing Charles, he seems too rugged and strong. Charles is more of needy, selfish, very posh, type.

by Anonymousreply 57October 23, 2022 5:12 AM

Good point, r45. It's also outside and royal and royal-related burials are not usually held in a cemetery but in interior spaces.

by Anonymousreply 58October 23, 2022 9:54 AM

R48, that would be hair and costume, not the actor.

by Anonymousreply 59October 23, 2022 3:27 PM

The Diana death scene rumors are 100% BP press office bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 60October 23, 2022 4:08 PM

Quite scandalous!

by Anonymousreply 61October 23, 2022 4:13 PM

^^ aka Weather-Beaten Old Whore Cunt

by Anonymousreply 62October 23, 2022 4:28 PM

[quote]The Diana death scene rumors are 100% BP press office bullshit.

British Petroleum?

by Anonymousreply 63October 23, 2022 5:07 PM

Buckingham Palace

by Anonymousreply 64October 23, 2022 6:18 PM

So West is playing Charles as if he were Stephen Boyd? That's the worst casting possible

by Anonymousreply 65October 23, 2022 7:28 PM

With West King Charles should claim they are home movies.

by Anonymousreply 66October 23, 2022 7:30 PM

R1 Truthfully I think Debicki is much more beautiful than Diana ever was though I guess these things are subjective.

by Anonymousreply 67October 23, 2022 7:36 PM

She can’t pull off the hairstyle. I know Diana was tall, but this was appears to be a giraffe. She is super tall and thin.

by Anonymousreply 68October 23, 2022 7:56 PM

I loved the early season of The Crown but the last series left me cold. Maybe because I remember the events it highlighted and it was obviously slanted even to me. Plus, Olivia Colman was terrible as the Queen. This one is so flagrantly exploitation. Re-enacting Di's funeral? Why?

by Anonymousreply 69October 23, 2022 8:01 PM

R68 that actress is well over six feet tall in flats. I'd be shocked if she wasn't. She has a lovely face which obviously films quite well. I bet she's gorgeous in person. I'm willing to give her a shot.

Is this season going to have Princess Margaret's bath scene? She was scalded in a hot bath at some point, right? Margaret always intrigued me for some reason. I don't know the chronology of such things and need to read a book on the lady at some point.

by Anonymousreply 70October 23, 2022 8:03 PM

According to this site Debicki is 6’1” 3/4.

by Anonymousreply 71October 23, 2022 11:58 PM

[quote]Jonathan Pryce is terrible casting as Philip.

Agreed; I'll miss Toby Menzies as Phillip. He had his chiseled features and was still handsome as an older man, but had that arrogant & condescending tone.

I liked earlier years of The Crown but the Diana Saga has been *so* covered. I'd actually be more interested to see how the Queen navigated around Mr. Smug himself, Tony Blair. It's hard to remember there was a time when he looked like a reformer and she was about as charming as stale bread. Ironic that the old girl got the last laugh in the end.

by Anonymousreply 72October 24, 2022 12:14 AM

I love Imelda Staunton, but playing a royal? No. And Dominic West has always had sex appeal, whereas Charles....Really bad casting.

by Anonymousreply 73October 24, 2022 1:43 AM

This is a case where we were not yet ready to move on from Emma Corrin and Josh O'Connor.

by Anonymousreply 74October 24, 2022 1:46 AM

If we just bitch enough about the re-casting on this show, they'll of course listen to us and use the people we prefer!

by Anonymousreply 75October 24, 2022 1:51 AM

The actress is actually 6’3.

by Anonymousreply 76October 24, 2022 3:45 AM

GOLIATH

by Anonymousreply 77October 24, 2022 4:05 AM

Could the funeral scene be for Harold Wilson? He was Prime Minister twice and died in 1995.

by Anonymousreply 78October 24, 2022 4:06 AM

Only Prime Minsters funerals the Queen ever went to were Churchill and Thatchers. That scene is probably Remembrance Day, the Queen rarely ever went to funerals so as not to upstage the dead.

by Anonymousreply 79October 24, 2022 4:31 AM

She would go to funerals for family members, but I don't think anyone died in the royal family whose funeral she went to between 1989 and 1995. I agree it is most likely a Remembrance Day observance (something we have yet to see on this show). But Harold Wilson was a good guess.

by Anonymousreply 80October 24, 2022 4:40 AM

scene looks a little like Remembrance Day

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 81October 24, 2022 4:43 AM

I don't think the sadness and unhappiness in that photo was just for the fallen. They all look morose, probably around 1992

by Anonymousreply 82October 24, 2022 4:45 AM

Those outfits at r81 are hilariously bizarre--they are so Nolan Miller!

I cannot believe Diana had a red band around her black hat to match the Remembrance Day poppies!

by Anonymousreply 83October 24, 2022 4:47 AM

I don’t understand, the older they get the easier it should be to match actors to the Royal family, but it seams like there do a worse job of it?

by Anonymousreply 84October 24, 2022 4:57 AM

Who plays the tampon?

by Anonymousreply 85October 24, 2022 6:58 AM

I could see Lindsay Duncan as the Queen and perhaps Patricia Hodge as Princess Margaret . Geoffrey Palmer would have made a good Prince Philip had he been alive. Joanna Lumley as Patsy Stone as Camilla. Imelda Staunton should be a chamber maid

by Anonymousreply 86October 24, 2022 7:45 AM

Patricia Routledge as The Queen Mother

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 87October 24, 2022 7:49 AM

The tampon joke is sooo funneeeeeee!

by Anonymousreply 88October 24, 2022 8:19 AM

Patricia Routledge was offered the Queen Mother in The Queen but turned it down. The role ended up being played by the hideously common Sylvia Syms.

by Anonymousreply 89October 24, 2022 11:15 AM

Patricia Routledge was rooting for a damehood, she couldn't afford to offend the Royal family

by Anonymousreply 90October 24, 2022 11:20 AM

Jonathan Pryce sounds like Jonathan Pryce, not Philip.

by Anonymousreply 91October 24, 2022 11:26 AM

Obviously Jonathan Pryce is a great actor, but Prince Philip was a dashing fairytale prince (looks-wise) well into his 80’s. Pryce looks ridiculous as Philip because his features are so…common.

I guess it doesn’t help there’s a dearth of attractive British actors in their 60’s or 70’s. Unfortunately, Charles Dance would’ve been perfect has he not already played Louis Mountbatten.

by Anonymousreply 92October 24, 2022 11:31 AM

Yes, Charles Dance should have played Philip. And for the Queen Mother, if they couldn’t get Patricia Routledge, they should have tried for Stephanie Cole.
