Patti LuPone Has Had Sufficient !!!

She tweeted:

“Quite a week on Broadway, seeing my name bandied about. Gave up my Equity card; no longer part of the circus. Figure it out.”

She's looking ROUGH. She seems like such a B....

by Anonymousreply 1October 17, 2022 6:04 PM

Her content will now be seen exclusively on OnlyFans.

by Anonymousreply 2October 17, 2022 6:11 PM

Big deal, I gave up my V Card at a circus.

by Anonymousreply 3October 17, 2022 6:19 PM

Does she have COVID, again?

by Anonymousreply 4October 17, 2022 6:21 PM

This is what caused Patti to say “enough”.

Once you've played Momma Rose and then Joanne in "Company," there are basically no good roles in musical theater for her to play anymore. She's aged out of them.

by Anonymousreply 6October 17, 2022 6:23 PM

Even for a Broadway legend, this cunt is a DRAMA QUEEN.

Good for Patti.

by Anonymousreply 13October 17, 2022 6:46 PM

I can't decide whether this story is the ghost of Christmas future for Lea or the desired goal.

by Anonymousreply 14October 17, 2022 6:46 PM

I saw 'The Elephant Man' on Broadway and two ladies down front kept talking through the show. Finally, one lead, politely turned to them and in an informal personal way, looked right at them and said everyone could hear what they are saying, but paid to come hear me. People gasped, but he went right on with the show. Marvelous show!

by Anonymousreply 15October 17, 2022 6:47 PM

I don't understand why she would turn in her Equity card over this. How do you connect the issue to the union?

by Anonymousreply 16October 17, 2022 6:55 PM

Ryan Murphy needs to produce “Feud: Patti vs the Hearing Impaired”.

by Anonymousreply 17October 17, 2022 6:58 PM

Since it closed in July, I think EVERYONE is out of "Company."

by Anonymousreply 18October 17, 2022 6:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 21October 17, 2022 7:02 PM

Educate me, please. Doesn’t giving up her equity card also mean giving up benefits such as health insurance and access to senior living supports?

by Anonymousreply 22October 17, 2022 7:09 PM

You'll never be a star now, you cunt.

by Anonymousreply 23October 17, 2022 7:14 PM

Couldn't she have just said she's retiring from Broadway? Was the dramatic announcement of giving up her Equity card really necessary? She could return in the future which makes it rather awkward to issue a statement later saying, "Whoops, changed my mind."

If she returned to Broadway and never gave up her Equity card, then she could just say that a particular role came along that was just too good to pass up. But by giving up the Equity card makes the whole thing uber bitchy and cunty.

by Anonymousreply 51October 17, 2022 8:28 PM

She can continue to do concerts. I've seen her three times, all excellent shows.

by Anonymousreply 52October 17, 2022 8:31 PM

She's going to open a sand candle shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

by Anonymousreply 53October 17, 2022 8:32 PM

Is it necessary to give up one’s equity card? Is it expensive to maintain? Are there yearly dues? Why not just hold onto it for just in case?

by Anonymousreply 54October 17, 2022 8:36 PM

And yet you Marys would still be falling all over yourselves frantically trying to get to your credit cards if she tweeted that she was gonna be appearing in a production of FOLLIES next month.
And yet you Marys would still be falling all over yourselves frantically trying to get to your credit cards if she tweeted that she was gonna be appearing in a production of FOLLIES next month.

by Anonymousreply 60October 17, 2022 8:42 PM

One small mention in BuzzFeed is her "name being bandied about"?

by Anonymousreply 61October 17, 2022 8:42 PM

This is all drama. If a producer wanted Patti to play a role and Patti wanted to do it, she’d get Equity status.

She didn’t quit. She retired her membership. She can very easily take it up again.

by Anonymousreply 62October 17, 2022 8:43 PM

I enjoyed Patti's autobiography, but some of it read like she could very well be a "Karen." Show biz has always been cutthroat, and she really took offense at Andrew Lloyd Webber screwing her over twice (once for Evita and later, again, for Sunset Boulevard). But some of those instances could honestly be cracked up to wanting strong box office returns, especially in Sunset's case. Why *wouldn't* ALW want a major Hollywood star to open that show on Broadway? Is it possible Patti wasn't easy to work with and that also tipped the scales in someone else's favor? She has had issues on sets before, and we tend to hear mostly her version of events, but just maybe she is the problem.

I certainly can forgive Lilias White yelling at an audience member and assuming the device was a phone. People do that kind of thing all of the time now, and it's obnoxious enough just for the audience around them who choose to behave and actually watch the show on stage instead of checking social media or recording it. Anyone doing that should be evicted from the theater immediately. The visually or hearing impaired should have their devices marked somehow so it is clear to everyone that it's an aid and not simply rude behavior.

by Anonymousreply 63October 17, 2022 8:44 PM

It’s all they can talk about at the Olive Garden R61.

I can't.

That's the job of the ushers and the house management, and absolutely [bold]not[/bold] the job of the performers.

By interrupting the show to scold an audience member, the performers only make everything uncomfortable for the rest of the audience and bring them out of it.

The only time it's allowable to me is if the audience member is using flash photography, which can endanger people on stage and so needs to be stopped immediately. Otherwise, the actor is just being a control freak and should be more "in" the moment anyway rather than monitoring the audience.

Patti had a contract to appear in Sunset on Broadway hence successfully getting the funds for her pool out of Lloyd Webber. See r63? Quite simple really.

by Anonymousreply 80October 17, 2022 9:07 PM

Patti LuPone is 73 years old, a little past the time when one loses their voice. She sounded great in Company, but really, how long could that last, a couple of years? I figure she doesn't want to go the way of numerous other old singing divas who go one stage sounding like shit. HEAR THAT MISS STREISAND?
looked right at them and said everyone could hear what they are saying, but paid to come hear me.

Or, as Patti would say, "Shut your hole honey, mine's making money!"

by Anonymousreply 111October 18, 2022 12:14 AM

Here's what I glean:

There was friction between Patti and Katrina Lenk, the lead of Company. Early in the run, they would exist the curtain call arm-in-arm. At some point they stopped doing that. Also, when Patti went on her "Chris Columbus (or whoever it was) pays my salary" rant, you could see that Lenk had a "not this again" look on her face.

I believe Patti was ANNOYED when the mask mandate for Broadway shows was lifted at the end of June. I think that might be why she turned in her Equity card. And, I think she exited the show as soon as she was contractually allowed, which pissed off the other members of the cast, because she was somewhat of a draw, having just won the Tony.

It's all very sad. I adore Patti LuPone, but unfortunately her temper sometimes gets the best of her. I can understand, however, her being upset about the mask mandate lifting. After all, she's 73, and she'd already had Covid once.

I very disappointing ending to her Broadway career, if this is it.

by Anonymousreply 112October 18, 2022 12:17 AM

R112/PF, why is the P in LuPone a capital letter? It doesn't seem to have any basis in the name's (Italian) origins, unlike, say, DeWitt.

by Anonymousreply 113October 18, 2022 12:26 AM

She should play Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street. She'd probably get a fourth Tony.

by Anonymousreply 114October 18, 2022 12:27 AM
why is the P in LuPone a capital letter?

Affectation.

by Anonymousreply 115October 18, 2022 12:27 AM

I believe Patti was fed up with the bias rumblings on social media between her situation with an audience member and Lillias White’s interaction with one.

by Anonymousreply 116October 18, 2022 12:27 AM

She's too old to play Dorothy Brock.

At age 73, all she's fit for is Madame Armfeldt and Jerry Herman's "Mrs. Santa Claus."

by Anonymousreply 117October 18, 2022 12:29 AM

How silly, if true r116.

by Anonymousreply 118October 18, 2022 12:29 AM

Patti was too old to play Rose. Nobody cares if Dorothy Brock is "mature."

by Anonymousreply 119October 18, 2022 12:29 AM

She can always play Dolly Levi. But my god that would be a horror show.

by Anonymousreply 120October 18, 2022 12:29 AM

She could do "Dear World."

by Anonymousreply 121October 18, 2022 12:30 AM
She can always play Dolly Levi. But my god that would be a horror show.

She was supposed to, but she got pipped to the post by Bette and... Zaks, was it?

by Anonymousreply 122October 18, 2022 12:30 AM

If Bette could do Dolly in her 70s Patti could do Mame. And who wouldn't want to see that?

by Anonymousreply 125October 18, 2022 12:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 129October 18, 2022 12:41 AM

R112, no friction between Patti and Katrina. Patti adored her.

by Anonymousreply 130October 18, 2022 12:42 AM

Patti did not adore Sherie Scott.

by Anonymousreply 131October 18, 2022 12:43 AM

Patti did a masterclass with Ernest Borgnine at Julliard.

by Anonymousreply 132October 18, 2022 12:44 AM

After taking a look at OP's photo, I think we all know the best role for Patti: "Ivana Trump: Sad Last Days"

by Anonymousreply 133October 18, 2022 12:46 AM

Maybe they should musicalize The Manchurian Candidate for her.

by Anonymousreply 134October 18, 2022 12:48 AM

R131, which is a shame because Sherie Rene Scott would actually be a terrific Big Edie/Little Edie if they revived Grey Gardens - and second act Big Edie would be on the very short list of parts Patti could still do.

by Anonymousreply 135October 18, 2022 12:49 AM

She looks like a poorly made up drag queen

by Anonymousreply 136October 18, 2022 12:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 137October 18, 2022 12:50 AM

She could play Dorothy in a "Golden Girls" musical.

by Anonymousreply 138October 18, 2022 12:54 AM

Andrew Rannells will now be up for the roles for which Patti was previously considered.

by Anonymousreply 142October 18, 2022 1:06 AM

Is the Veronica Cartwright character in the Witches of Eastwick musical? Patti could play that.

Patti explains in this video why she is retiring. I don't understand why she had a hip replacement since she isn't a dancer. Was she ever in an accident?

Patti could play the Veronic Cartwright character in a musical version of The Birds directed and designed by Julie Taymor.

by Anonymousreply 154October 18, 2022 1:22 AM

The answer is the same as it was when it was questioned *very* recently, r145. Many older people need hip replacements, not just dancers. She might not have been a dancer, but her lifetime on the stage still takes a physical toll.

DLers are consistently inconsistent. Constant wailing about "the woke" all over the board 24/7, day in and day out, but now that "the woke" are after someone DL dislikes, suddenly you're all repeating their Twitter talking points and agreeing with everything they say.

I also don't think the eight or nine actual gays who are left on here realize that a lot of the hate for people like LuPone comes from the rightwing straights who have invaded, and are perpetually angry with any celebrity that is identified as being liberal and/or Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 225October 18, 2022 2:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 227October 18, 2022 2:49 PM

Interesting how few people have bothered to read the information or learn the facts before posting their opinions here. Ms. LuPone resigned from Equity months ago -before this recent incident happened. There is no connection between the two things, other than her comment saying, "Hey -leave me out of it." Her reasons for quitting had to do with changes to rules regarding dues/fees. She said that she didn't see herself having another role on Broadway at her age, so why should she continue to pay, and at a higher rate than before?

I am not her biggest fan, but she deserves the respect she has earned from her 50-year career on Broadway, and the iconic roles she created or played. She has strong opinions and is not afraid to state them. That makes her more of a Datalounger than anything else.

by Anonymousreply 228October 18, 2022 3:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 229October 18, 2022 3:30 PM

Perhaps you need to wag your finger at her.

by Anonymousreply 230October 18, 2022 3:41 PM

R116 But, it later came out that she had turned in her card at the end of her run in Company. I think it was the mask thing.

by Anonymousreply 231October 18, 2022 4:10 PM

R228, when Equity members are not working, they pay the basic dues of $176 a year. The higher rate comes from salary deductions which she would no longer have.

by Anonymousreply 232October 18, 2022 4:14 PM

Peter Allen wrote that song after someone was talking during a Julie Wilson cabaret performance and annoyed him. But then later he said it was really written with Judy Garland in mind.

Joan Allen asked to have it sung at her funeral by Hugh Jackman, whom she had heard sing it in "The Boy from Oz." (He complied.)

by Anonymousreply 240October 18, 2022 4:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 242October 18, 2022 4:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 243October 18, 2022 4:59 PM

I doubt it was inspired by Garland. Even a rowdy gay bar would give Judy their rapt attention.

by Anonymousreply 244October 18, 2022 5:02 PM

Judy didn't just sing at gay venues. Straights came to hear her concerts too.

by Anonymousreply 245October 18, 2022 5:05 PM

No one who came to see Judy at a real venue would have to be told to listen. Garland also did some appearances at gay bars when she was particularly on her ass.

by Anonymousreply 246October 18, 2022 5:14 PM

I once went to a performance of a show with Katharine Hepburn. Someone was taking a picture and she stopped the show and lectured them. She was right, but I thought it was weird, like, to just go out of character like that.

by Anonymousreply 247October 18, 2022 5:17 PM
No one who came to see Judy at a real venue would have to be told to listen.

Dataloungers always think because THEY revere someone and some of their friends do, that everyone else does (or did).

When her health was failing and she was giving bad shows at the end of her life at nightclubs, audiences would become restless (and Allen saw some of that).

She was still adored by many, but she had to play smaller venues as she got older, and some people went to see her who did not keep shrines to her in their apartments.

Read the biographies of her.

by Anonymousreply 248October 18, 2022 5:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 249October 18, 2022 5:27 PM

William Goldman reported that two straight guys who had brought their wives to see Judy at her 1967 concert at the Palace were talking in the lobby and he overheard:

Guy 1: I don't know - is it theatre? Guy 2: It has to be. Guy 1: Why? Guy 2; It sure as hell ain't singing.

You don't know her to like her.

Oh, R290 likes Lupone, Ripa, Cooper, Mayer, Lucci and SJP? Rarified air, gurl.

Ha! You got me, R295. I guess Patti has sometimes acted out more frequently than that :-)

by Anonymousreply 296October 19, 2022 10:18 PM

I think she's bitter because it took her so long to win a Second Tony. She's said as much when she received it. For a legend it took her a while to really get a second "big" role on Broadway after Evita.

by Anonymousreply 297October 19, 2022 10:59 PM

Nancy is a big role.

by Anonymousreply 298October 19, 2022 11:01 PM

So is Reno Sweeney.

“Broadway has also changed considerably,” LuPone said. “I think we’ve spent — not we, but whoever’s in charge of, whatever — has actively dumbed down the audience. And so the attention span of the majority of the audience, I think, is much less than it was in the past, and I don’t think plays are going to have long lives on Broadway — I feel as though it’s turning into Disneyland, a circus and Las Vegas.”

“There’s still very intelligent audiences that support the theater, but the ticket price is outrageous,” LuPone continued. “There’s so many obstacles that prevent theater from being the tool it should be in society, which is an education.”

by Anonymousreply 300October 19, 2022 11:05 PM

I love her. Ever since I saw her in “Evita”. Broadway legend who always delivers. Three time Tony winner. Any serious actor dreams just to be nominated. I hope she finds peace.

R294 is right…. She’ll be back. Lol

by Anonymousreply 301October 19, 2022 11:58 PM

She was known for racing through EVITA. I guess the Les Mouches audience mattered more to her.

Patti is a love or hate kind of singer and artist and personality. I LOVE her.

Leave her alone because she doesn't give a rusty fuck about any of our opinions. When you are THAT gifted - you carry the knowledge and burden of it with you - every day of your life. Patti has nurtured and used her gifts exceedingly well.

She will never be forgotten. Her voice is SPECTACULAR.

by Anonymousreply 316October 20, 2022 3:45 AM

She was absent from Broadway from 1987 through 1995, I believe because she was raising her son. She won her first Tony for EVITA in 1980 and her second for GYPSY in 2008. For what shows could she have expected to win Tonys for in the interim? I would say the only serious possibility was SWEENEY TODD.

Patti, Bernadette and Betty are all pretty much retired from the Broadway stage now. It seems just like yesterday that all 3 were the toast of the town, but time waits for no one. All the stars of stage and screen that we grew up with are dropping like flies.

by Anonymousreply 322October 20, 2022 3:58 AM

I also agree with every word she said above. She has often made very intelligent comments like these. BUT she also has an extremely unfortunate and frequent tendency to believe like a nasty, angry, self-centered horror show whenever she's not completely happy and is feeling somewhat insecure.

by Anonymousreply 326October 20, 2022 4:05 AM

Patti to me is a real piece of work, and she makes me roll my eyes, but even so I love her because she knows exactly who and what she is. She knows she's a pain in the ass and a diva, and she's okay with that. She's enormously talented on stage (although she's like Ethel Merman or Carol Channing and usually too much for the screen), and she's funny, and she genuinely laughs at herself like Merman and Channing did. I'm glad I've never had to work with her, but I find her quite lovable at a distance.

As someone said above, she's a take-her-or-leave-her kind of star. Dataloungers who love difficult divas for some reason always think they can [bold]harangue[/bold] others into liking their divas (as they are doing above), but it's no good: if her personality turns you off, it turns you off.

by Anonymousreply 327October 20, 2022 4:05 AM

Nonsense. Patti is a narcissist. She only pretends to stand for things.

She doesn’t want to pay the dues, doesn’t want to reapply, is built for 8 performances a week but doesn’t want to do it anymore, and is over it. If she goes back to Broadway, she’ll do it as a guest. Equity “doesn’t know her.” Damn, Patti - calm down.

The form has also changed, r322. No Jerry Herman, Steve Sondheim or Andrew Lloyd Webber to write them shows. The Broadway highlights of those three women were thanks to those three men. Plus Patti also got the benefit of Porter.

I was taken to see War Paint for my birthday and she and Ebersole (who I already loved)were great and I think Lupone gave a wonderful performance. Was surprised at how good she was. Did go to the original production of Evita but it was a matinee so I saw a Teri something.

by Anonymousreply 343October 20, 2022 7:04 AM

One generally doesn't "resign" from Equity (or SAG/AFTRA). Members planning not to be working under any union contracts for a while would generally ask to take "voluntary withdrawal," which can last indefinitely. During this time, a member would not have to pay dues. If, at some point, a member decided to become active again, he or she would just have to pay their current dues to work under an Equity contract again.

Of course, because our Patti loves to create drama offstage as well as on, she may have very well made some grand gesture and quit outright.

I ran into Patti once, in the Radio City Music Hall elevator during the Grammies. It was 1981 and Evita won for best Grammy of a Musical. In the elevator, she had changed into a white dress to sing 'Argentina'. She was the only person in the the elevator and I gasped when I walked in. She looked at me and I looked at her and said simply, 'You look lovely tonight'. She relaxed a bit and said 'Thank you' and smiled. That was all, but it was a moment.
Patti Lupone is not insecure. A moron using CAPS to take a swipe at her, probably is.

People who have tremendously outsize egos and who frequently indulge in diva behavior are often said to be insecure at heart. Just read Patti's bio, specifically the part about Evita, for example, and tell me she's not insecure.

by Anonymousreply 356October 20, 2022 3:04 PM

Sorry, I meant Patti's autobio, or memoir if you prefer.

by Anonymousreply 357October 20, 2022 3:04 PM

R356 I think Andrew Webber did a number on her ego by choosing Glenn over her for the US 'Sunset Boulevard' cast. She still seems bitter about that, although she did say she got a swimming pool from the settlement.

by Anonymousreply 358October 20, 2022 3:07 PM

I agree with some of that, but not the part about Patti being able to laugh at herself. In fact, it seems to me that she has shown zero sense of humor about herself. Remember how she squashed the project when Leslie Kritzer did a club act as "Patti LuPone at Les Mouches" and then wanted to record it? Also, I believe Patti was one of the very few stars who were openly not amused when they were parodied in "Forbidden Broadway."

I think you've got something there. I would imagine that tremendous public humiliation had a very negative affect on her personality. Offhand, I can't think of any examples of her being publicly bitchy before that -- though there were some non-public incidents, like when both she and Madonna were around at Lincoln Center in 1988 (Patti was doing ANYTHING GOES, Madonna was rehearsing SPEED-THE-PLOW), and Patti reportedly posted a note on the call board saying that there was only room for one Italian-American diva backstage at Lincoln Center. MAYBE she was trying to be funny, or not....

by Anonymousreply 362October 20, 2022 3:23 PM

In her book, she mentions how Harold Prince bullied her in 'Evita' and made her cry, a lot. Did Harold direct her in anything else? Did he make Patti grumpy, as well?

by Anonymousreply 363October 20, 2022 3:26 PM

R363, that may be an example of her insecurity and paranoia. Hal Prince did not have a reputation for bullying.

Diva^^ before someone wishes me dead.

by Anonymousreply 366October 20, 2022 3:57 PM

The aging process sure is interesting! She was a knockout beauty when young, could have been a movie star. Loved the part in her memoir when she said she didn't see her beauty until she visited Italy for the first time. Frumpy during Life Goes On, and then really glamorous and svelte throughout most of the 90s. She filled out a bit in the 00s and that shoulder-length bale of hay hair didn't do her any favors, but she still looked good in some of her character roles (thought the curly bob she wore during Gypsy favored her) but around War Paint she really got beautiful again, love the short hair, bangs out of her face, her skin looks great, she glows. And she still looks like herself.

Of course she's insecure, there's no underestimating what a number the Sunset Boulevard fiasco did to her ego. That was a public humiliation, coupled with her dissatisfaction during Life Goes On and several other professional problems until a "comeback" in Gypsy, that was over a decade without a major success. It changes a person. Contrasted with the major successes of her early career and innate confidence in her gift, you're left with someone who feels they're liable to be taken advantage of, someone who feels they constantly have to prove themselves worthy. It's fun to build up our most talented stars as divas, society needs its idols, but we can't forget that at the end of the day these are human beings. It should make us understand her point of view, feel sympathy, not dismiss her as a raging cunt. Her bedside manner may be brash, but she is rarely wrong. And let's not forget the recent loss of her brother which I'm sure she's still reeling from.

by Anonymousreply 367October 20, 2022 4:28 PM

I thought she was the only one to really disparage Prince. But there is a youtube video interview with George Chakiris who unlike Patti does not have a reputation for complaining and is pretty pleasant about everyone. Except in this interview. He did Bobby in the national tour of Company and said something to the effect of working with Prince was not a happy experience.

R367, I think, at this age and this level of stardom, she can actually tell the truth without any repercussions to her career.
So many people in the biz agree with her wholeheartedly but are afraid to say anything. Show biz chews up actors and she's just pointing it out.

Judging from social media, the response of the general population to what LuPone has said and done is very divided. That's no surprise, as nowadays you can find twisted people who will agree with even the most outrageous behavior. But among entertainment industry professionals, the reaction to her antics seems to be mostly very negative.

Also, to repeat: While anyone with functioning brain cells would agree that there are huge problems with Equity, those problems don't seem to have much or anything to do with Patti LuPone, and her grievances certainly have absolutely nothing to do with recent events regarding Lillias White and that Porkalob person, despite her unfortunately successful attempt to hitch her publicity wagon to at least one of those events.

by Anonymousreply 381October 20, 2022 6:07 PM

I saw her singing two songs “Fever” and “I’m Calling You” on AHS NYC (inside a gay bathhouse) last night. Good vocal versions. She looked stoic.

by Anonymousreply 382October 20, 2022 6:18 PM

She has a distinctive look. While not a beauty, she can look great. I adore her, so I'm biased. I've had a little interaction and she's always been friendly enough. I'm not married to her, or working with her so if she's a cunt it doesn't matter to me.

by Anonymousreply 387October 20, 2022 7:33 PM

Bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 388October 20, 2022 7:38 PM

It's true the Andrew Lloyd Webber rather screwed her over and embarrassed her by taking away the opportunity for her contracted and agreed upon NY premiere of "Sunset Blvd", and she was compensated about $1 million, which she has said she put into her swimming pool. BUT, Andrew Lloyd Webber also wrote the show "Evita" which NY production made her a star. Had she not gotten that role and ultimately succeeded in it (with a very capable understudy/matinee person ready to assume the role at any time back in the day), all of her career afterwards might not have been. Everyone is replaceable -- she's been aware of that from the get-go.

I always wondered what would have happened to Streisand's career and the film of Funny Girl if Streisand hadn't caved into Stark's demand that if she didn't sign the multi film contract with him there was a chance she wouldn't have gotten that film. Who else would he have cast? Audiences wanted to hear who singing People? Edie Gorme? And if Babs didn't have that amazing intro to a worldwide audience what would her career have been like?

by Anonymousreply 405October 20, 2022 8:56 PM

Babs already made waves as a recording star. At worst, she would have got stuck in Disney fare and sitcomes, like Sandy Duncan.

by Anonymousreply 406October 20, 2022 9:00 PM

*sitcoms

by Anonymousreply 407October 20, 2022 9:00 PM

Well, if Barbara Cook could play Fanny Brice, why not a real Jewish soprano?

by Anonymousreply 408October 20, 2022 9:01 PM

I went to a dress rehearsal for 'Whistle Down the Wind' in London. It was suppose to be the first preview, but they cancelled that. However, anyone having tix could sit in the run thru. The big production table was in the center of the auditorium and Andrew Lloyd Webber was sitting there holding court with all the production people.

It was pretty calm during intermission and said went up to him and said, "Sir Andrew, I'm sure many people ask you, but may I have your autograph?" He seemed a bit flustered and said, "Oh, no, people rarely ask me for my autograph, unless it's a bill." We just spoke a moment till someone else came by, but he seemed like he appreciated someone just saying 'Hi'.

by Anonymousreply 409October 20, 2022 9:07 PM

Not likely, but what if Mama Cass had gotten I Can Get If For You Wholesale?

She was on the Tonight Show with her group before the Mamas and Papas.

No, r404, doesn't irk me at all. Just pointing out that speculation is only that. How does that make me a "fangurl"? Also, I do just fine around here, thank you very much.

by Anonymousreply 414October 21, 2022 7:54 AM

R414 ..you are so jealous.

by Anonymousreply 415October 21, 2022 8:01 AM

Patti looks as though she's had sufficient servings of extra cheese pizzas, apple pie, cheesecake, and bags of Hershey's Kisses.

by Anonymousreply 416October 21, 2022 8:06 AM

To quote the great Elaine Stritch, "Supposition is a waste of time."

by Anonymousreply 417October 21, 2022 2:27 PM

If Patti hadn't gotten Evita, her career might have been even bigger.

by Anonymousreply 418October 21, 2022 2:40 PM

There's no logic to that statement.

by Anonymousreply 419October 21, 2022 2:41 PM

R418, would you care to explain that comment?

by Anonymousreply 420October 21, 2022 2:41 PM

Uh, R418, she won the Tony for Evita, and two more during her career. She’s done quite well. You make no sense.

by Anonymousreply 421October 21, 2022 4:15 PM

I remember the period of her career where she embarrassed herself chasing hockey player Ron Duguay all over town, grabbing his ass as often as she could get away with.

by Anonymousreply 422October 21, 2022 5:30 PM

Ron and the husband of Patti have similar faces.

by Anonymousreply 423October 21, 2022 5:33 PM

But their asses were quite different.

by Anonymousreply 424October 21, 2022 6:14 PM

I had Ron first.

by Anonymousreply 425October 21, 2022 6:15 PM

I have Ron now.

by Anonymousreply 426October 22, 2022 12:24 AM
[R418], would you care to explain that comment?

It is very possible that if she didn’t get Evita, LuPone might have taken a hit TV show or even a hit movie and her career gone to even greater heights.

All the discussion in here about her career having been diminished if she didn’t get Evita. It could have gone the other way too

by Anonymousreply 427October 22, 2022 2:00 AM

That makes little sense. She didn't do EVITA for a crazy amount of time. The roles didn't come rolling in WITH a launchpad like EVITA. And with her looks, the movies always saw her as a supporting player.

by Anonymousreply 428October 22, 2022 2:05 AM
Linda Lavin has had a better theatre career than Patti LuPone.

The general public has no idea who Linda Latin is. Case closed.

by Anonymousreply 429October 22, 2022 2:11 AM

Linda Lavin had her own TV show for a decade. And she has continued to get regular roles on TV throughout the years. Patti, in her own words, has always been a hard sell to TV executives.

by Anonymousreply 430October 22, 2022 2:13 AM

Lavin also had a really good arc on "Barney Miller" playing opposite DL dreamboat Max Gail years ago. That helped her getting "Alice" tv show as well.

by Anonymousreply 431October 22, 2022 2:20 AM

R410 I thought about that. I can absolutely hear her sing the Miss Marmelstein song.

by Anonymousreply 432October 22, 2022 2:26 AM

I cried when I didn't get the role of Tony's sister on The Sopranos.

by Anonymousreply 433October 22, 2022 2:28 AM

Without having Evita to drag her down, Patti could have been a bigger singer than Madonna in the 80s

by Anonymousreply 434October 22, 2022 4:38 AM
It is very possible that if she didn’t get Evita, LuPone might have taken a hit TV show or even a hit movie and her career gone to even greater heights.

That would never have happened in a billion years. Although I will agree when she was younger she was never attractive at a distance, but never close up. She never would have made it on TV or in the movies any better than she did. She is abrasive and loud in manner--it worked well for her playing a momma-bear type on "Life Goes On," but it would have been too jarring in roles for young women.

by Anonymousreply 435October 22, 2022 4:46 AM

Linda Lavin has also been a regular cast member of at least three TV series during the past 10-15 years: Sean Saves the World, Apt. 9JKL, and B Positive.

Casting directors are known for bringing in Broadway stars for auditions for movie/TV roles. Patti must have had hundreds of chances and blew most of them given her distinctive abrasive looks and personality.

It wasn't an issue at a distance on stage, but clearly, audiences didn't want to see and hear her on a big screen or in their living rooms on TV

by Anonymousreply 438October 22, 2022 4:55 AM

Helen Mirren's husband tore Patti a new one on a recent movie. Patti fucked up continuity by removing/switching some item between takes.

by Anonymousreply 439October 22, 2022 4:57 AM

Patti LuPone is a bigger LEGEND than any television star. What the fuck? She's the most famous voice and most gifted performer on the musical STAGE, ever. She knows it. We all know it.

She was nowhere near as abrasive or ugly as Striezand or Linda Lavin or Merman. Fuck right off. Patti was a sexy smart and supernaturally gifted woman. Progressive as fuck. She doesn't suck the public's dick. She gives them all she's got and allows them to make up their own mind. She worked her ass off to be great. And she gets fucking PISSED when respect is not paid. She's not charging by the note - she's respectful or her job and her GREAT gift.

I'm not insane. There are more beautiful voices - but none more impressive than Patti LuPone's.

Think of how many Broadway musical stars actually did make it even bigger than Patti did on TV:

Dick van Dyke

Florence Henderson

Jean Stapleton

Beatrice Arthur

Linda Lavin

Bonnie Franklin

Jason Alexander

Megan Mullally

Jerry Orbach

Jesse L. Martin

Sarah Jessica Parker

Mandy Patinkin

For all of them to have made it and for Patti LuPone not to have made it at there levels must have been embarrassing for her.

To be thought of not as talented and less watchable than even Bonnie Franklin... wow...

She gives them all she's got? She sat in her dressing room for most of Les Miserables, even though she was supposed to fill out the cast in scenes where Fantine did not appear/had died. I guess she didn't truly learn the meaning of ensemble at Juilliard.

by Anonymousreply 445October 22, 2022 5:20 AM

How was she respectful of her job when she shortchanged audiences by racing through EVITA, especially on nights where she was more interested in her after hours cabaret gig.

It's weird to me that Broadways stars still exist. They aren't really very famous to the rest of the country or the world, unlike some Broadway stars of the past, who used to perform (act & sing) in movies or TV variety shows. Or when there were national magazines like Life, that promoted Broadway shows. This forum is about the only place I still see them discussed regularly.

by Anonymousreply 472October 22, 2022 10:32 PM

But on the other hand, R472, we're told that a huge percentage of the Broadway audience nowadays is made up of tourists from around the country and around the world, which was not true back in the day. So, back then, Broadway stars became well known to people outside of New York primarily through TV variety shows, etc., and now it happens mostly through people coming to NYC to see them perform. Plus, of course, now we have YouTube and podcasts and music downloads etc. etc. etc., and of course, Broadway actors still do appear on TV on late-night talk shows, etc.

by Anonymousreply 473October 22, 2022 11:13 PM

Merman(variety shows and Mad World) and Martin(touring and Peter Pan) were nationally famous. Is Patti?

by Anonymousreply 474October 23, 2022 6:07 AM

Patti LuPone is famous nationally. What a dumb question. Patti and Bernadette both did many talk shows, concert appearances, film and TV shows. Bernadette can no longer sing and has not been a popular guest because she lacks everything else to be a good guest. But she was once a big thing.

Bernadette was the lovely young (looking) Broadway singer of choice for many TV appearances and she was quite special in most of them. Vulnerable etc.

Patti comes, leaves and sings as herself. She's a powerhouse talent and a great personality. All over from Merv Griffin to Joan Rivers to Carson, Fallon and Colbert. Just a few weeks ago. And a few months before that. She brought the house down.

As an actress, Patti is truly underrated. That's part of what makes her the greatest Broadway performer of all time. Patti is a very good actress AND not only when singing. Though she is magnificent then. Have a Little Priest is not angelica lansburies weak number at all. It belongs to Patti LuPone. She is precise, deadly and hilarious. She is the most powerful and heartbreaking Fantine. And Patti now owns ALL the GYPSY songs. NO one has performed them better. Whoever Ethyl Merman was - she couldn't really sing. And she for sure couldn't convey emotion. She's forgotten - except on DL and wikipedia. She's not a living experience and all existing footage of her singing makes a musician ask why? Yeah, she was LOUD. Patti is much more than loud.

Patti is on AHS this season. She's been in a number of Ryan Murphy productions. Since when does the public not know her? She's a star. A much bigger star than Audra McDonald or Bernadette or Liza or Barbra Cook. WTF.

Patti did a concert of torch songs at the Vivian Beaumont about twelve years ago, and although in fine voice was terribly boring.

She has an far from interesting presence on stage without a script, and she literally sang about thirty songs! People were staring at their watches and the applause became quite muted as the endless evening dragged on. She seemingly sang every song she knew the words to short of "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" and "Happy Birthday"!

by Anonymousreply 486October 26, 2022 2:21 AM
