JAKPAC! jackets (and their knock-offs).
Not only were they reversible (inside panel wasn't as busy/colorful), they could be turned inside-out from the collar and converted into a drawstring bag. I don't recall ever doing actually doing that with my Jakpacs (I had two)...but I thought it was cool that you could. Technically, they were unisex, but my recollection is that girls wore them more than guys.

Benetton never really went away. Only in the U.S. And they were apparently set to launch a comeback here Just before the pandemic, they opened their first "pop up" store in the Santa Monica Place. But the adjacent Third Street Promenade and the Place itself really took a big hit during COVID. Lots of business closures. The whole mall is one big depressed mess. Doubt they stuck around.

I graduated high school in 1987. The 80's were an interesting time to grow up. The things I remember...
Shoulder pads
Colored hair mousse (loved that stuff)
The space shuttle exploding on live tv. One of the teachers from my school was a back up for the mission.
The rise of waffle cones and frozen yogurt places.
Waiting in line for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi
Watching the Dodgers play on Fox every time there was a game...for free!
Moonlighting/Miami Vice/Night Rider/The Dukes of Hazard/The Love Boat/Fantasy Island
Saturday morning cartoons that were actually good.
Wearing my collar up and my pants tucked into my mini boots with the fold them over style
My family getting a top loading Betamax because they were better quality than VHS
Buying Star Wars as my first movie on Beta
Star Wars toys galore
Playing "Ditch 'em" with the neighborhood kids until the street lights came on
Halloween was walking with a group of kids that were around your age and going from housing track to housing track...no adults involved.
Riding our bikes everywhere
Calling our teachers' houses to say hi
Going to movies with our teachers and feeling very grown up

The mall. The experience of being in the mall for hours, wandering around with friends, unsupervised by adults, the ambient sound (water fountains, conversation) of the mall, the airiness and the light from all the roof windows, everyone shopping and looking to shop and carrying shopping bags. The uncomfortable, fixed, slippery plastic chairs at the food court and the feeling of sliding around in them. Seeing one of your teachers at the food court smoking alone at a table and feeling briefly sorry for him even though he was an asshole in class. The way your legs ached when you got home, as if you'd just walked a very long distance. Which sometimes we had, because that mall was fucking huge.
I haven't been inside a mall for probably coming up on 20 years.

Croissants. The light, buttery. flakey crescent shaped rolls became a trend in the early 80s - probably with Au Bon Pain and competitors opening bakeries everywhere. Then there were the filled croissants - chocolate, almond, cheese, egg and chesse, ham and cheese...who could resist the sweet and savory scents wafting outside the bakery on a street corner or in the mall ? Along with croissants came the espresso , cappucino, and cafe latte drinks to complete your European fantasy vacation in your own neighborhood.
Before the end of the decade, Dunkin Donuts had their own croissants ('the next best thing since donuts!' they said) as did Burger King and McDonalds, not to mention every supermarket across America. DD introduced cappucino, cafe latte, and espresso drinks, too (as did McD's). Croissants are still around but not nearly as popular as they were 40 years ago. European coffee drinks are still around, too, but totally Americanized thanks to DD and McD's.

Yes! Laura Ashley was everywhere. I worked in a cafe in an upscale mall in the early to mid 80s - LA was the tenant across from us (next door to Bennetton). All the sales girls were dressed in that French country print. Women would walk around with their Laura Ashley shopping bags - filled with clothing, lampshades, wallpaper - you name it. When Laura kicked the bucket they hung a black wreath on the door and dressed their windows in black bunting - they were closed for a week 'in mourning'.

Television banks on walls in Junior's and Young Men's department of department store playing non-stop music videos all day and night. Little boutique stores did the same thing - trying to get the young buyers in (14 -30). Accessories stores (selling shoes, belts, handbags and costume jewelry ) had the same thing - televisions everywhere, in every display playing music videos. Not big screen TVs (yet) but smaller 19 " televisions.

Renting a James Bond or horror VHS and getting excited as the “United Artists” intro started.

R189, I found the United Artists intro to be terrifying as a kid. I'm not sure why, but it creeped me out.
Same with the HBO/Feature Presentation intro of the same period.

This. I'm not sure why but it seems the essence of the 1980s to me.
