Womp womp, you fascist fuck.
It’s completely and utterly bankrupt him, R1. Forever. I assume that’s the point, rather than the families ever getting their payouts (or at least nowhere near what they’ve been rewarded).

I hope he rots in hell.

AP: It is unclear how much of the verdicts Jones can afford to pay. During the trial in Texas, he testified he couldn’t afford any judgment over $2 million. Free Speech Systems has filed for bankruptcy protection. But an economist testified in the Texas proceeding that Jones and his company were worth as much as $270 million.

Harry Litman reacts to jury ordering Alex Jones to pay nearly $1 billion to Sandy Hook families: "We're talking about such outsized numbers that even if he's able to bob and weave some, I just don't see how he winds up anything but basically broke now for the rest of his life."

Jones, along with his company, have now entered into mediation ordered by the bankruptcy court to see if they can work out a deal. The families won’t be motivated to cut him a break, and Jones can’t lie about his assets, since that would blow up any attempt to use the bankruptcy laws to shield himself.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 12, 2022 8:44 PM |

He’ll be under a microscope for the rest of his days. Any attempt to reach any hidden assets will result in them being snatched. Not to mention that it would void any bankruptcy for which he may file.

He could have transferred amounts to his children and also to his friends when this all started. Not millions. Hundred thousand to enough people so even if some turn on him, others do not. They can give him cash every month.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 12, 2022 9:13 PM |
R29, that’s incredibly risky. Once the money is transferred there is no incentive for anyone to give it back to him. And if they did, it would count as income.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 12, 2022 9:16 PM |
Do you not understand cash? Do you lack reading skills? I said some would turn on him and he writes it off. Not all.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 12, 2022 9:21 PM |
R32, I’ll repeat. That’s incredibly risky. Maybe transfer some money to the wife—maybe—but never the kids or friends. Geez, ask any accountant or lawyer if it’s a smart move. If they say A-ok, time to get a new lawyer or accountant.

Now if they take everything from him wouldn't this force him to spend the rest of his days living in welfare housing and receiving welfare checks? Any money he makes and every single asset he has going to the families? Everything single thing he spends money accounted for? If he is able to live beyond that it is a clear sign he has hidden assets and hidden income. Let his family as well rot in hell as they have knowingly or not been the beneficiaries of his evil. But because our justice system is so horribly unfair that is not going to happen.

He cannot get the damage award discharged in Bankruptcy because it is based on willful and malicious misconduct. A big law firm will make a pile of money pursuing every penny he has ever earned, saved, stolen, hidden or fraudulently transferred...for the rest of his life.

R66 - no doubt. I could say they’re lying about dear old granny being dead and go piss on her grave and try digging her up. They’d think it was absurd, but would never think it about their own actions.. It blows my mind that there are people who think Sandy Hook was a hoax. But you know if they dug up a body and found one, they’d just add another layer to the conspiracy by saying the left put in some other kid’s body - probably one that was trafficked and missing. There’s no end for them. Alex Jones in undoubtedly mentally ill, but he also knows these idiots are easy marks. Trump figured that out too.

This is a real blow to all the right wing grifters out there, because nowadays, they have to pull extreme stunts in order to stand out from all the other grifters to get the attention and the audience's money. Grifters may think twice what stunts they pull if they are scared that it could be the end of their grifting career, and they may lose all their money and assets. It's not about them getting the money. It's about Jones having to watch over his shoulder whenever he tries to have access to his secret bank accounts. He will not be able to earn money in any official capacity since all eyes are on him. He can't do any money begs without at least one member of the Sandy Hook families lurking around and sharing it (latest bank or online payment service details) with the other SH families and their lawyers.

Several million(s) in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can be carried on a single USB dongle......in one's pocket.....if you buy it in cash from a private person, there will be virtually no way to trace it......you can take it with you anywhere in the world, no one can access it if the dongle is appropriately encrypted......even if the dongle is lost, your 24-word backup "seed" will reconstruct the funds.....almost anyone can memorize 24 words in a specific order...this is the way people hide money now.........all of you need to get with the program..........

You are absolutely fooling yourself if you think the government isn't monitoring cryptocurrency transactions. The money you put into crypto came from somewhere, and the feds know that you put it into crypto.
Bitcoin wasn't exchanged more than a handful of times until 2010, so I doubt someone here bought into it in 2009 anyway. Besides, we know Jones didn't buy into Bitcoin back then. He may have later but, again, the feds would know this, and his money would be discoverable.

✅ Pro insurrectionists killing cops
✅ Pro-Trump, a man accused of at least 25 sexual assaults, including by his ex-wife, who he memorialized as "hole number one" on his golf course
--
To be totally fair, Democrats don't have room to be high and mighty about supporting rapists—Many supported Weinstein, many loved Matt Lauer, many support Bill Clinton, and plenty of other predatory men. Supporting rapists seems to be a thing people do in general as long as the rapist plays for their team.

He obviously can't pay, but I'm hoping to see some (or all) of the plaintiffs showing up at his offices with the Sheriff in tow to attach everything they can get their hands on, including the building if he owns it. Then show up at his house to take his cars, and everything inside, and then delivery a court ordered eviction notice to him because they're getting the house too.
That happened to a bank branch I read about a few months ago. The bank had lost a lawsuit to an account holder but never paid the award, and it wasn't millions of dollars. The account holder's lawyer got a judge to order the attachment of the bank's branch office and he, his client and a sheriff's deputy showed up there one day with a UHaul truck. They handed the arrogant branch manager the court order and the deputy announced they were going to take all the equipment in the building. The branch manager got on the phone to his bosses and needless to say the guy who sued them had a check in his hand within a few minutes. LOL

R162, I love the Cernovitch tweet claming: "Nevertheless in a trial where he wasn’t allowed to defend himself on free speech grounds, he’s now being ordered to pay hundreds-of-millions of dollars."
He had every opportunity to defend himself on free speech grounds, had he actually contested either of the suits in Texas or Connecticut. However, the stupid fuck was a no-show for both, and lost the cases on default judgements. The recent trials were only to establish damages, so of course he couldn't present any free-speech defenses there. He said "Fuck You" to the courts, and the courts replied in kind. Sweet irony.

by Anonymous | reply 177 | October 13, 2022 3:23 PM |
The sad fact is that there will be other Alex Jones-types; but not unlike the lawsuits against the Catholic Church or the cigarette companies, these kind of judgements can help turn tide in that courts will rule against these types of people, enabling plaintiffs not only go after individuals, but also sponsors, media companies that give them a platform, other public figures that echo their lies, etc. Even though they have to be shamed into doing it, social media companies have demonstrated a willingness to ban these people. So while I don't necessarily think this changes anything - just at the people willing to defend Jones - I do think it opens up the floodgates to other people harassed by lies to fight back and win.

r176. We all have the tendency to do some really fucked up things (including murder) when we allow others to push our buttons. Most of us, if not all, grow into needy adults who were raised to look for outside guidance from authority figures, because we can't trust our own instincts and moral code thanks to mom and dad telling us that they know best (obey, or we will punish you / take away our love, money, approval / tell Santa Claus to put you on the Naughty List!). So we run around like headless chickens looking for some purpose and some great guide who will tell us what to think, what to believe, what to do. And based on our backstory, we can go either good or fall for some bad cult leader who is giving his followers a permission slip to express hate and anger towards others.

The past ten or twenty years, it was a steady decline....with the past five years, really amped up. After watching Ken Burns' documentary about the USA and the holocaust...so called "good" people here in the US were pretty mean and unaccepting. Of course, Germany was on steroids with hate, the common folk going right along with it....trying to annihilate (sp) a total population of people. I look at people much differently now. So? You can call Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump a lizard person and they can't sue you.
When the parents became public advocates for gun control they lost the right to sue for defamation.
Here's the law:
[quote] In the context of defamation actions (libel and slander) as well as invasion of privacy, a public figure cannot succeed in a lawsuit on incorrect harmful statements in the United States unless there is proof that the writer or publisher acted with actual malice by knowing the falsity or by reckless disregard for the truth.[2] The legal burden of proof in defamation actions is thus higher in the case of a public figure than in the case of an ordinary person.

I don't think you understand how unrelenting the other party--the lawyers of the parents can be.
You don't just say, "I'm bankrupt," and then they leave you alone. The lawyers will be filing motions every month, dragging him to court constantly, and he will be forced under oath to talk about any money he has coming in. If he lies, he goes to jail.

I want to know how many properties he owns. I read he owns a ranch outside Austin and probably a bunch of real estate on the East coast. Is it possible to sign over all your properties to family before the verdict? I remember OJ was allowed to keep a huge Florida mansion and he somehow never was broke or had any money issues. These vile people obviously know how to hide their money and assets.
I'm also confused why all these media lawyers are convinced the families won't get any money from Jones. A lawyer on CNN was convinced the families wouldn't get any money and their lawyers already prepared them for that outcome. I read he's hiding most of his money in a complex network of LLCs and shell companies and had years to hide the money and cover his tracks. Transferred most of his assets to other companies people and entities years ago and it's almost impossible for the lawyers to get their hands on it. According to them it's also a problem that it's a civil suit and the victims lawyers don't really have a leverage. They can't just put him in jail till he gives up all his assets for example. They have to go to court for every decision and subpoena and he can delay and appeal every decision for years.

Has anyone had the unpleasant experience of watching Alex Jones gain popularity over the last decade? And he started out on little conspiracy theory TV programs. He then branched out into talk radio, which became a serious dog whistle for fascist bullies conservative extremist rhetoric and talking points.
I clearly remember around 2003, when that idiot would get on talk radio and say all kinds of idiocy that at the time I thought was science-fiction in the style of war of the worlds.
Little did I know people were taking this guy literally and they’ve been listening to him since before the year 2000, where he “predicted” the so-called Y2K hoax.
He was such an extreme bullshitter I was astounded and at the time I didn’t realize that the reason that he had his pressured speech was either due to mental illness or some type of stimulant abuse.
Alex Jones is in many dictionary‘s and encyclopedias because his picture is under the word hunt in every dictionary.
Being from the south, and seeing the abuse of human beings sanctioned and celebrated while I was cringing and ready to puke and horrified, when I heard Alex Jones talking points for the first time I literally had to pull off the side of the road and cry because I was so sad that people would not understand the level of Nazism that man was promoting.
At first, I naïvely thought that it was because people from the north never had slavery in our country, and his didn’t recognize the racist talking points. When I found out that I was wrong I was disgusted.

I think since this is a civil trial, they can’t demand Jones’ passport, but the truly only way he can avoid paying this is if he left the country and went to live in one that didn’t have any reciprocity agreements with the US. That way he could spend whatever money he had in offshore accounts.

No. Given how much he owes (pending appeals, of course) the attorneys for the plaintiffs will be relentless. He’ll be under a microscope for the rest of his life, any attempt to access any hidden assets will likely result in their confiscation. If he can’t touch his assets without having them seized, hiding them won’t do him much good.

The Sandy Hook lawyers can find it. In the judgment collection process, they can depose Jones under oath, so each time he lies or misleads he's just adding to his liability. Any house he bought for anyone can be seized. They can even take his retirement savings.

Alex Jones is the ultimate example that I point to when people try to make the point that words don’t really matter. Even more than Trump. Short of the most vicious kind of premeditated, violent crimes, I honestly can’t think of a worse thing to do then deliberately spreading lies about murdered children and the grieving parents left behind. For power and profit. And I don’t buy for one second that he actually believed any of his own lies.
When you really stop to think about it, what he did almost defies belief. The sheer cruelty of it all. What happens to a human being along the way that they can justify doing what he did/does? What a stinging indictment of the current Republican Party that this …creature actually rose to a position of power and prestige-even reverence-within those circles.
