Full size Baby Ruths, tootsie pops and taffy were my favorite. Sweet Tarts and Skittles I can do without.
Tootsie Fruit Chews and the vanilla ones (not the original)
Tootsie Pops (the orange is my favorite)
Candy corn & Pumpkins (yes, I'm one of those that actually likes these)
Lemon Heads, Sweet Tarts & other sour candy
Red Vines minis
Kit Kat minis

When you realize tootsie rolls were invented to replace chocolate in military mess kits, their popularity in the south makes sense

What about the very Halloweeny stuff?
YES: popcorn balls - preferably caramel, candy apples, candy corn, wax bottle soda, wax lips, Mary Janes (have to be fresh though), blow pops, candy necklaces, Cracker Jack
NO: Sweettarts, Goobers, lollipops with no pizazz,

Sweet Tarts are so good
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 11, 2022 5:20 PM |
junior mints 👍. peppermint patties 👎. I think the mints are better because of the small piece size

I really don't get trick or treaters...if I get one or two, maybe. I buy candy and end up eating it. I'm debating if I should even bother anymore. There are kids around, but they don't seem to show up.

Are you from the past R19?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 11, 2022 5:30 PM |
We were told, when I was a kid, to never eat apples given on Halloween...it could contain a razor blade.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 11, 2022 5:32 PM |
R24 yes I am from the past but aren't we all. It is a pity the age of home prepared halloween treats is a distant memory. As kids we liked all the prewrapped crap but we also had people in the neighborhood who prepared things we did enjoy - such aa really good candy apples - CRUNCHY - or M&M peanut butter cookies, or brownies, A really good Halloween haul needed to have weird stuff in the pillow case mixed in with all the conventional crap.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 11, 2022 5:35 PM |
If it was someone we knew we could take and eat anything. We knew at least a hundred neighbors in the neighborhood.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 11, 2022 5:36 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 11, 2022 5:37 PM |
Wow I've never heard that before, R25. Why have you been keeping that a secret all these years? Seems like information other people should know.
Do "drug dealers give out drugs to kids on Halloween" next.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 11, 2022 5:40 PM |
Kids either do trunk-or-treat (don't hit me; I didn't invent the name) at a public place, or they drive over to the richer neighborhoods and mob the manse for some full-bar action.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 11, 2022 5:41 PM |
Saltwater taffy
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 11, 2022 5:45 PM |
Fentanyl is being disguised as colorful candies. It's been on the news. The razor blade in the apple has actually happened...years ago. Now everyone go out and enjoy trick or treating!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 11, 2022 5:49 PM |
The razor blades in apples was debunked bullshit. Although, back in the day our local hospital would xray candy the few days after Halloween for free.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 11, 2022 5:57 PM |
Fentanyl is disguised as candy to get across the border.

You can return CANDY? Who knew.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 11, 2022 6:12 PM |
Good idea. Have the candy on hand, just in case. Then return unopened. Keep the receipt.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 11, 2022 6:15 PM |
Costco does allow you to return food items, though they can’t resell it & have to throw it away. I learned this when my coworker tried to return yogurt because she wasn’t crazy about the taste.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 11, 2022 6:43 PM |
R40 Which contributes greatly to food waste.
Would make more sense to just keep the uneaten candy, and polish it off yourself.

Those new 'Sweet Tarts' I got at school...Zzzzzz

by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 11, 2022 7:15 PM |
Twix (caramel) and Reese's peanut butter cups.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 11, 2022 7:25 PM |
I'll second fruity sour things: Lemonheads, Warheads, Smarties, Nerds, Sweetarts, Skittles, Starbursts, Charms lollipops.
Chocolatey things: Junior Mints, Peppermint Patties & Tootsie Rolls (chocolate & fruit flavors...no vanilla). I love Kraft Caramels too. Way too much.
Hot cinnamon: Atomic Fireballs & Hot Tamales
And I loved getting homemade popcorn balls as a kid (only from people we knew personally), but they didn't taste as good if they weren't wrapped in black or orange wax paper! I don't even think they make that wax paper anymore.
[quote] "Good N Plenty, never!"
R11 I love licorice (actual black licorice, the red stuff isn't licorice), but I DETEST Good 'n Plenty. The flavoring is almost as disgusting as the chalky coating.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 11, 2022 7:26 PM |
Tootsie Pops
Mini Snicker Bars
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (can consume an entire bag of the miniature version).
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 11, 2022 7:26 PM |
I buy alot of candy for halloween, then i turn off all my lights and enjoy every bite.

Malted Milk Balls, Chicklets, Life Savers, Dots, Jaw Breakers, Rasinettes and money.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 11, 2022 8:51 PM |
Stapler, paper clips, gardening tools, cans of pumpkin meat.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 11, 2022 9:44 PM |
Circus peanuts, Mary Janes, Black Jack chewing gum, Necco wafers.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 11, 2022 10:06 PM |
I’ve discovered a late-in-life taste for malted milk balls, which made me gag as a child.

I just came back from Costco. I asked an employee if they could resell candy if I over bought it and returned it. He said yes, they don't resell refrigerated and frozen items but otherwise they can resell. I bought two more boxes.

That's good to know. I bought a really large double pack of wet wipes for my runny ass when I was sick last year, and only needed one pack. I kept them attached. I used 1 whole pack which lasted several times a day for a number of days. So I'll return the unused pack.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 12, 2022 4:18 AM |
I was a kid in the 70s, and you would sometimes get really awful Depression-era candy like Necco wafer rolls, Pearson's Salted Nut Rolls, Boston Baked Beans, and the most dreaded of all, Mary Janes.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 12, 2022 4:24 AM |
Twix, Snickers, Milky Way, Reeces Cups. So, chocolate.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 12, 2022 4:28 AM |
Salted Nut Rolls aren’t as bad as circus peanuts.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 12, 2022 4:41 AM |
I liked squirrel nut zippers, which I never saw at any other time. I also used to love Ice Cube chocolates.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 12, 2022 4:46 AM |
Baby Ruth, Heath Bars, Rollos, Hersheys With Almonds, Butterfingers, Zagnut, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers, Mars/Mars Almond…these are all pretty cheap, nasty chocolate, but I ate them all as a kid.
Now, Ho-hum, I stay away from sugars and corn syrup. But as a kid and in school, these were big treats.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 12, 2022 9:20 AM |
I get the candy I know I won't eat. Stuff I would have gotten as a kid, Nerds, BlowPops, Skittles, that taffy in black and orange wax paper. I wait to buy the chocolate candies I know I would woof down like paydays, almond joys, York peppermint patties, and snickers.

by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 12, 2022 4:45 PM |
Pleasure, r69. It's the only holiday I am enthused about. My friends, neighbors and the trick or treaters seem to enjoy it.

r70 Do you have rides, haunted houses, etc. Two tents for props! I bet you are beloved by your friends and neighbors.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 12, 2022 8:33 PM |
r72, no rides or haunted houses, just 2 tents for props. Some friends and neighbors stay for hours drinking and having fun, some stop by to chat and the trick or treaters and their parents usually grab candy and a drink. Some of the kids go through the tents multiple times.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 13, 2022 5:14 AM |
I remember we got boxed candies, Good n Plenty, Junior Mints, and also (dating myself here) good sized bags of plain M&M’s. We also got little concave sugar discs in a cellophane sleeve, Smarties. And a lot of Tootsie Rolls and Bit-o-Honey, but these were larger than they are today. We carried our candy in pillow cases and traded with each other after we got home.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 13, 2022 11:44 AM |

Necco Wafers

M&Ms, Milky Way, Sour Patch Kids, Nerds🎃
by Anonymous | reply 86 | October 13, 2022 5:48 PM |
That's pretty cool, R35. We get about 500 kids so not feasible for everyone.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | October 13, 2022 5:58 PM |
I'm a total fun size fan, not as big a Nestlé fan as I am Hersheys. I had a house on our trick or treating route 1000 years ago who gave out handmade candy and caramel apples. Hell would freeze over before that'd happen today.
Kids get to 'trunk or treat ' (because walking around a neighborhood is apparently too much stress for most parents). I can remember neighborhood dads who would jump out of hiding places and chase you with the cheesy full head masks, scared the piss out of me, my friends, other neighborhood kids, but it was so much more fun.

The mini sweet tarts are sooo good. I also love dots. I’m very particular about chocolate…I like Kit Kats but only the European version that I buy at world market. The little bitch assed neighborhood kids aren’t getting $6 European chocolate. I actually pulled off a crown while eating a dot once. I also cracked a tooth chewing on a valentine heart.

R75 I meant that I predate the “fun sized” options. In the 1970’s we were given the M&M’s in a bag that was the size of one that would come from a vending machine. I remember, even earlier, that the candy wrappers for Baby Ruth bars were made of crinkly wax paper, not the fiberless plastic sleeves they came in later. I think they were 35 cents.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | October 14, 2022 10:26 AM |
If you eat a bunch of fun size candy bars you won’t have a fun size ass.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | October 14, 2022 10:59 PM |
The razor blades in apples thing was debunked but there was a father who killed his son with poisoned pixie stix years ago (1980s?) after taking out a large life insurance policy on him. The effed up thing was, he put poison in other pixie stix to kill more kids in the neighborhood to make it look like a deranged killer was on the loose. Fortunately no other kids died.
I liked all the fun-size candy bars. I don't like nuts so I would trade with my sister, my Snickers for her 3 Musketeers or Milky Way, my peanut m&m's for her plain, etc. I also liked the little round hard candies wrapped individually in clear plastic. Cherry, lime, lemon, orange.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | October 15, 2022 12:43 AM |
R82 have you tried M&Ms pretzel? They are pretty good. Also, a while back M&M test marketed? some M&M jalapeño....I got my hands on some of those and they were fantastic, but the powers that be went with M&M brownie fudge which were meh. Mary Janes can do a number on your dental work.
