Well his BFF David Villa has been openly homophobic but that's standard "locker room talk" in sports so who knows just how homophobic it really would be in 2022. All these European guys operate in European culture which has way tamped down on open expressions of homophobia. And they make fortunes on their public image so they might just publicly tow the liberal party line if there was a tootie fruitie on their team.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | October 9, 2022 4:48 PM |
The background to the tweet was that he was being linked to several different women in the press, so it was supposed to be a sarcastic reference to that.
In the context of homophobia in football, it was thoughtless and tasteless, but I don't think that was necessarily the intention. (It could have been, of course, I don't know. A lot of footballers are homophobic.)
R83, Xavi was a handsome chap in days gone by. He started looking a bit rough when he went to Qatar, which is just punishment. Iniesta, who was never that good-looking, retired to Japan and is making lots of money without having sold his soul. He seems very nice too.

[quote] it was thoughtless and tasteless, but I don't think that was necessarily the intention. (It could have been, of course, I don't know. A lot of footballers are homophobic.)
Football is curious as a culture, in that the mensâ clubs & fans of almost every nation (except North America & Australia, ironically) are to some extent homophobic and misogynistic, yet some of the worldâs most iconic and famous and successful male stars of the game are overtly-femmey looking or sounding men (Cristiano, Becks, Henry, and more recently Silva, AgĂŒero....)
Which is kind of a double slap of misogyny, considering how women, whether female players or WAGs or groupies, have always been viewed and treated as disposable lessers/vessels/accessories by footballers. Apparently itâs fine to be feminine and even homoromantic in football, so long as youâre one of the lads and youâve got some muscles and youâre good on the ball and youâre not actually *gasp* gay (or worse, a woman playing the game).

R126, what do you think was said? I highly doubt it was racial. Henderson is not racist.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | October 10, 2022 3:58 PM |
R132 yes, I agree and really want to believe Hendo wouldn't ever say anything racially offensive, especially not in full view of a dozen HD cameras and all his colleagues & fans, and I find it hard to imagine that he would. Tw!tter is a kangaroo court, and I don't believe much of what the armchair psychs & lawyers who use it have to say, plus this accusation would be so out-of-character for the person we understand Jordan to be. He's someone I've always looked up to in sport (and there's pretty much no other man I can say that about in sport) for the way he uses his platform to champion others and hilight abuses and inequalities as much as he's able.
Not to use the 'I have black friends' defense', but Hendo dotes on his younger POC/foreign teammates at both England & Liverpool, and has even vocally led and organised campaigns to castigate home & away fans for racially abusing those younger players. He's an outspoken man in general about inequality. It's on record that he has the respect and love of many POC players both English and foreign.
Personally, I'm hoping and envisaging that it's either to a case of lost in translation (Hendo's thick Mackem accent and non-RP dialect making a more tame insult or trash-talk sound like something far worse to Brazilian ears that don't understand colloquial English too well), or to Hendo calling out the opposing player who is currently being investigated for rape and the opposing teammates taking umbrage (though it's likely the accused did rape multiple women). The latter seems likely to me, given Hendo has preteen daughters and has spoken before about womens' rights issues (on behalf of the England womens' football squad).
But the F.A. will decide with the footage and accounts they have of the alleged incident, and we have to deal with the facts when they come to us, whatever those may be and however much they may hurt or shock. As my girl Ellie Goulding says, 'you think you know somebody....'

by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 10, 2022 7:30 PM |
R131, I was talking about football culture at large rather than Argentina specifically, sorry for expressing myself badly. Where football culture is strong it tends to be intolerant even in gay-friendly societies, or at least that's my view of it.
Since I mentioned the joking about the strong camaraderie in the squad, TyC Sports in Argentina did some creepy deepfake music videos to promote their World Cup coverage. One is Roderigo de Paul in 'Nothing Compares 2 U', but there's also Cristiano Ronaldo in 'I'm Too Sexy' by Right Said Fred'.

R157 good for him, and still courageous given his level of achievement in the game. He probably got a bit of grief about it in media and on socials.
Still, too bad it wasn't the 25-year old Richarlison (no relation). Having a current top player in their prime come out would be an instant paradigm shift.

Wow, Maldini has really aged well. He was always one of my favorites--such a great face. Hope he's not an ass.
Zidane has gotten better and better with age.

Coincidence and poor timing from him? Or Crisp-wanker being an arsehole and trolling?

Barcelona isn't going to collapse over âŹ20m lost revenue. As a fan-owned club, they don't have oil states or billionaire investors to bail them out like Manchester City or Chelsea, but they'll probably raise another sponsorship to cover the Champions League losses.

R172 lol yes a 20-something Rory did start his career as a hopeful actor in Brit dramas and independents. Gave it a good go, though he didn't get far.
He also had a short but memorable stint as a recurring minor antagonist in longrunning popular London soap EASTENDERS, playing the would-be rapist boyfriend to tragic Lucy Beale. But don't go and ask him about that in his comments, because he doesn't like to talk about it nowadays...

R177 not at all. I don't work for any sports media (though if @TalkSport want to give me a job hmu). I'm just an English Prem fan and more interested in current younger players. I also don't like creeps who make jokes at the expense of paying season ticket holders & fans who happen to be LGB.

R169 well yeah they can crowdfund the cash. the bigger problem is that they have no financial strategy and keep spending what they have in unsustainable ways
for one example of the dozen or more debts they still oweâ Man City have not seen âŹ55 for the purchase of Ferran Torres. from 10 months ago. Barça do not have that liquid cash to pay back and that debt is rapidly accruing interest but they still are promising a quick payback. like my brothers in Christ with WHAT money??
at this point like where are they finding the cash to keep the lights on at the Spotify Camp Nou

who even asked for his take on the ballon dâor? was one L not enough for a season?
by Anonymous | reply 181 | October 18, 2022 8:26 PM |
R179, Man City and Barcelona agreed to a payment in installments for Torres, so I'm pretty sure there's no promise for a rapid payment though I'm open to correction if you have a reliable source. Transfer debt is extremely common across all the leagues and there's nothing nefarious involved in most cases.
[quote]the bigger problem is that they have no financial strategy and keep spending what they have in unsustainable ways
Barcelona accumulated a potentially ruinous debt through a number of avenues: irresponsible transfer investments for which they overpaid; hugely inflated wages during the reign of the previous (corrupt) club president Bartomeu and finally the effect of Covid which made it impossible to recover the losses.
Agree with it or not, there is a financial strategy. One is getting rid of the worst of the Bartomeu contracts: Messi and Griezemann's wages are gone, Busquets, Piqué and Alba are holding on but may be gone by the end of the season and De Jong refuses to be transferred at this point. The decision was made to finance the bulk of the debt and invest in new players and new infrastructure, the rationale being that the club could not afford to wait for future success. There have been positives and negatives to this strategy. On the one hand, attendances at games have averaged 80,000 this season and the club's merchandise sales are extremely healthy, which are two of the primary objectives. On the other hand, whereas no-one expects immediate success across the board, a trophy or two is mandatory, and Xavi's inexperience is starting to tell. Also, the means used to try to get De Jong and Alba to leave and Lewandowski to break his contract with Bayern were dodgy and the question remains of whether it was really a good idea, on balance, to push Messi out.
It should be noted that many clubs in La Liga suffered as a result of Covid and have also sold media assets, except that these were offered to them by La Liga, whereas Barcelona obtained more favourable terms for theirs. Sevilla are in trouble due to debt and have had to sell their most valuable players, which was taken advantage of in a despicable way by Ajax in the transfer of Ocampos.
by Anonymous | reply 182 | October 18, 2022 10:11 PM |
Sorry, what I meant to say in the last paragraph was that La Liga offered clubs a package of compensation for the sale of their media assets, but Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao opted out.

[quote] Sevilla are in trouble due to debt and have had to sell their most valuable players, which was taken advantage of in a despicable way
fairs but consider: sevilla are the spurs of la liga. ie whatever they do will be ridiculous and end them up in the mud bc cringefail is in their club heritage
