Company

I love this musical, but seems all but forgotten.

It is such a witty musical about married and single life.

The original 1970 cast recording had all stars- Dean Jones, Barbara Barrie, Charles Kimborough, Beth Howland, George Coe, Madeline Kahn, John Cunningham, Donna McKechnie, Stan Jones, Steve Elmore, and the great Elaine Stritch.

"All but forgotten?" It just had a major revival in London AND on Broadway.

????

It had a major Broadway revival just last year, and before that in 1995 (with Boyd Gaines) and 2006 (with Raul Esparza)

When did Madeline play Amy before this performance?

by Anonymousreply 12October 8, 2022 1:34 AM

Not a troll. I did not realize Company was as big as it was. A lot of people I know are not familiar with it.

by Anonymousreply 13October 8, 2022 1:34 AM

R12 Madeline was the original Amy I thought

by Anonymousreply 14October 8, 2022 1:36 AM

Fair enough, OP.

If you're never seen it, check out D.A. Pennebaker's cinema verite documentary on the recording of its cast album. I believe it's currently on the Criterion Channel and/or HBO Max.

You thought wrong. Beth Howland originated the role.

I don’t think Madeline has ever played the part.

by Anonymousreply 18October 8, 2022 1:44 AM

It's shockingly wrong that Beth Howland play Amy and Linda Lavin has not!

by Anonymousreply 19October 8, 2022 1:48 AM

Beth Howland’s replacement was someone named Marian Hailey.

What a librarian name.

Did no one comment on the checked jacked and turtleneck in the original post? Didn't Bobby have friends to help him or give feedback on his fashion choices? Though the original male Bobbies did have nice chests in the "Barcelona" scene.

by Anonymousreply 23October 8, 2022 1:53 AM

I posted in the Bway thread that when Stritchy is braying the ending it kind of sounds like, “Writhe! Writhe! Writhe! Writhe! Writhe! Writhe! Writhe!”

The recent London revival was probably the best version.

It's strange that Patti LuPone says that she had a hip replacement. She was never a dancer like Liza, so why would she need a hip replacement?
why would she need a hip replacement?

The original was worn down by the weight of the chip on her shoulder.

by Anonymousreply 30October 8, 2022 2:11 AM

R29 Have you seen what she's lugging around?

R23 A houndstooth check jacket with a turtleneck was very much of the era.

No, it's not even slightly strange. You must not know many people over age fifty.

Plenty of people need hip replacements, especially after that age.

I'd love to get OP and r29 together so they can exchange sweeping generalizations based on their mutual ignorance.

"I'VE never heard of a city called 'Kuala Lumpur' before, so it must not exist!"

"Obviously, since I'VE never heard of it either!"

by Anonymousreply 40October 8, 2022 3:39 AM
r36 DD Ryan the costume designer was a well connected NY socialite with a rather fascinating career.

What an odd career trajectory for hubs:

[italic] In 1954, she helped out with costumes for the Harold Arlen Broadway musical “House of Flowers,” for which Mr. Capote had written the book. She married the stage manager, John Barry Ryan III, the scion of a family of financiers and civic benefactors, who went on to be a general partner at Kuhn, Loeb & Company, the investment bank. They divorced in the 1980s. [/italic]

Here's Jonathan Bailey accepting the award for best supporting actor for Company in 2019.

The cameraman thinks Bailey's boyfriend is actually Bailey when the nominees are grouped together on the screen. A modest amount of hilarity ensues.

This starts at 1:25 in the linked video.

by Anonymousreply 45October 8, 2022 9:19 PM

Bailey's boyfriend in the video at r44 is James Ellis. Most sources on the Internet indicate that Johnathan is private about his personal life and hasn't confirmed that he is dating anyone. (Private, except when he was kissing Ellis on camera when he won that award.)
