[quote] Madonna (now)

Madonna was *always* pretentious. Well, at least starting from affecting a pseudo British accent. Then, "playing" guitar. I do play guitar, a little. When she professed that she was learning guitar and got up on stage, "playing" guitar, I knew she was a poser. She was basically strumming 3 easy chords on a very expensive guitar.

Barbra Streisand

by Anonymousreply 11October 3, 2022 11:05 PM

R14 Which is especially galling, considering all his method-actor bullshit is being poured into a string of "Dirty Grandpa" parts for yet another paycheck.

He and Morgan Freeman both. It's like seeing the Mona Lisa on a shower curtain.

A hundred years ago I worked at a popular restaurant and eventually most famous people came in for dinner.

The only two who really expected us all to turn our heads in delight and wonderment were Richard Dreyfuss and Sylvester Stallone who seemed baffled we didn't automatically comp his meal.

Every other celebrity, for better or worse, just sat down and ordered dinner like everyone else...oh, except Diahann Carroll, but we all knew she was batshit crazy already.

by Anonymousreply 39October 4, 2022 12:44 AM

Ugh, can't stand when celebrities expect to be comped meals at restaurants.

by Anonymousreply 43October 4, 2022 1:01 AM

R39 I’d only comp a celebrity’s meals if they agree to re-enact a brief scene from one of their films or shows in exchange. If they’re in a band, they can sing for their meal. I’d love to see Dreyfuss re-enact his mesmerizing mashed potatoes scene from Close Encounters. A free meal for you, sir!

by Anonymousreply 44October 4, 2022 1:02 AM

Rupert Everett

by Anonymousreply 45October 4, 2022 1:03 AM

I agree with Angelina Jolie. When she started adopting children from different countries as if she were buying different wines to go with different meals. I'm glad that Zahara is going to Spelman College, though. At least she's paying attention to what might make each child feel comfortable.

by Anonymousreply 46October 4, 2022 1:04 AM

Kate McKinnon

by Anonymousreply 47October 4, 2022 1:05 AM

I'm sorry but, Kate McKinnon? Really? What's pretentious about her?

by Anonymousreply 66October 4, 2022 2:59 AM

Martha Stewart and Ina Garten.

I don't mind people saying that something should be done X way, but I do like to hear a *good* explanation of why. Martha just says: you have to do it like this and there seems to be no reason for it, sometimes.

Ina and her "good olive oil," "good butter," etc. People don't use ingredients thinking they're swill, people buy what they can afford.

And wrote a couple of children's books. One of them was even titled THE ENGLISH ROSES. 🙄

I chalked it up to being another of her reinventions and waited for it to run its course.

by Anonymousreply 77October 4, 2022 7:48 AM

In general, liberals are rather elitist, so a lot of liberal celebrities are pretentious.

Particularly American actors.

She'd be crushed, (86) to read your, "She's no celeb..." but too bad for her!

You are massively right; i.e. Maggie Haberman (of the NYTimes) is a smug a'hole!

Goddess, but she just drips pretentious arrogance and contempt via her on air monologues and her delivery style that is the equivalent to, "I am the voice of Goddess who must not be questioned!"

I've never known or seen a "reporter/wannabe reporter/tRUMP whisperer" quite like her and hope that she is a 1 and done as goes that type of persona!

CNN could do better in their early a.m. programming selection of go-to reporters.

Ethan Hawke is somewhat pretentious, but that seems to born of a genuine love for film and literature, which most actors today do not have at all. I like that he’s proud to be an intellectual. That shows in non-paycheck projects he produces or does - First Reformed, that John Brown show, the Newman/Woodward doc.

I wouldn’t lump him in with Penn or Jolie, who exploit international suffering as a prop for their reputation, or GOOP.

by Anonymousreply 125October 5, 2022 5:40 PM

Ethan Hawke deserved an Emmy nomination for The Good Lord Bird.

by Anonymousreply 126October 5, 2022 5:43 PM

Come to think of it, Sean and Madge were a perfect match for each other. Both pretentious narcissist sociopaths. I do think he slapped her around, but she probably liked that he didn’t take her shit like every other man she was with. Daddy issues and all that.

I don't know what one has to do with the other, R114.

Anyway, R57 Stiers was Julliard-educated and mentored by John Houseman there (which I didn't know until I looked it up, but I find interesting). He was an actor but also a director, and musician who guest conducted smaller regional orchestras. He played pompous very well, but at most, it was a great exaggeration of qualities he already possessed. I can see how that may be perceived as pretentios, but I don't really believe he was.

None of these people aren't coming up with cures for any rare diseases. They are entertainers, PERIOD. If they use their platform for good, fine, but if they are always promoting some useless garbage they want us to buy and make more money from hawking, then, fuck them.

Brett Somers. I had to do “Celebrity Battle of the Sexes” with that drunk. She and Cloris Leachman were paired against Reggie Jackson and myself in the kayak race. Early on, she simply WHACKED Cloris in the face with an oar and Reggie reached over to help. Somers bit him right on the wrist. Outrageous. The crowd howled with laughter, thinking this was all part of the show. I shot to my feet, screaming “DROWN THE DINGBAT!” I said to the producers “You can’t run with this kind of garbage! On my worst day, I never would’ve treated talent like this! You show me a sober Match Game host and I’ll go down on ya!”

by Anonymousreply 143October 16, 2022 8:40 AM

I hate to say this because I really do love her, but...

Jenifer Lewis has a tendency to go on these pseudo-profound, super-serious diatribes/rants in interviews, in which she seems to believe she's imparting her great wisdom unto the world.

And it often comes on very suddenly and out of left field. Like one minute she's being all silly and hilarious, and then it's like some switch gets flipped and she turns into this insufferable blowhard. Weird.

Will always love her, though.

by Anonymousreply 144October 16, 2022 8:55 AM

Meghan Markle and Harry Windsor. Should do something else besides calling themselves humanitarians if they can't even maintain proper rships with their relatives. And Archewell only attracting $US50K in a year when registered in Delaware (where 95% of donations can be written off as expenses) is just piss poor.

Angelina, especially for trying to blame being underweight/eating disordered/on speed, H or coke on seeing starvation and malnutrition in developing countries. Cynical in the extreme.

Oprah - if she's going to carry out interviews, how about asking decent questions instead of gushing and saying WHAT?

Gayle...where to start? Really?

The pretentious attitude is still less offensive than her constant whining.
