Denmark’s Prince Nikolai ‘shocked, confused’ to be stripped of royal title by Queen Margrethe

If she was my grandmother I'd tear her a new asshole. If he's ever asked to do anything official, I hope he tells her to fuck off.

Seems rather mean to STRIP them of their titles. Better to make a new rule going forward.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 1, 2022 4:46 PM |
Guess he'll have to make it on looks alone. Good luck hun!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 1, 2022 4:47 PM |
I don't think that Prince Charlotte or Prince Louis should have been given those titles either. It just sets them up for a lifetime of disappointment.
They are just being given those titles now because they are little, it makes for cute photo ops and it helps to make the family more marketable in the short-term.
But it leads these kids to grow up thinking they are important members of the royal family. Their identity is then shaken when they ultimately get pushed aside as adults and downgraded to background figures at the most. Their own kids then don't matter at all.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 1, 2022 4:49 PM |
Great decision.
Every member of all the royal families used to have very onerous obligations to the state on their personal and professional lives--in the sense that they had no personal or professional lives of their own.
We don't live in that world anymore. In the Harry generation, they don't do anything for the state; they use their titles to make a buck, even though they are already incredibly wealthy. It's embarrassing to the country.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 1, 2022 4:53 PM |
I'm being downgraded to a Count!!
Ffs. These kids will never have to work a day in their lives. KC3 is taking notes.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 1, 2022 4:54 PM |
R5 I think you're ignoring the larger issue in that it's not ethical to have a royal family, at all. People being forced to live a public life and do a particular job, whether they like kit or not. People sugar coat it by saying they'll live a life of luxury, but it's not good enough.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 1, 2022 4:55 PM |
Finally onto the other nation's royals.
The Danish set get way too much of a pass because the social 'progressivism' associated with the nation but the family itself has been very conservative minded and image conscious. And this leading to a stereotypical and antiquated classism where it's less progressivism than being dismissive of the plebs that rut around in the mud like hogs in heat.
Hence, more than a few fictious lgbt royal series and films loosely based on said family and their suggested disapproval.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 1, 2022 4:59 PM |
Nobody is "forced" to work (Harry!) if they believe it is 'unethical to work for the government.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 1, 2022 4:59 PM |
I think it was a bad move for those kids. If she wanted to change the rules, she should have done it going forward, with Frederick's kids. To remove their titles after they were basically all adults was really unkind and improper. Yes, I think royalty is ridiculous, but so is mind-fucking. She should admit she made an error, and reverse her decision
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 1, 2022 5:12 PM |
The queen doesn't make errors.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 1, 2022 5:14 PM |
R8, you completely discount the idea that a) there's a family culture they grow up in and b) there is true meaning and satisfaction to be drawn from the opportunity to do what they do. There's two parts to royal and family.
Further, it's all getting flexible... Anne and her husband didn't take a title for their children, Edward and Sophie took aristocratic titles but are plainly destining them for conventional work. Officially HRH the Duchess of Kent, she taught music at a state school for thirteen years, known only as Mrs. Kent. The Earl of St. Andrews, heir to the Duke of Kent, is 41st in line and was in the diplomatic corps and is now chancellor of a university. His son, Lord Downpartrick, great-great-grandson of a king, worked at JP Morgan and now fronts a clothing line. Lady Sarah Chatto is an artist. The Earl of Ulster, heir to the Duke of Gloucester, served in the army for years and now works in a non-profit. The further down the line you are the less visible you need to be. The mistake is raising them like old school royalty which was what happened in the 60s and 70s due the Queen's natural conservatism and her mother's Edwardian influence. Their youths had been shaped when royalty was divine business and the whole lot was entitled to something.
This is just the Sussexes pulling and Andrew and clinging to a model that hasn't worked since Queen Mary's day. It does make sense to create space between working members of the royal family and members of the royal family... it provides privacy, choice and freedom for those who are not being called to serve and reflects the place of monarchy in the modern world. And if serving is too much, there's always abdication.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 1, 2022 5:14 PM |
Apparently, she felt that they should not be saddled with them and limited to performing only royal duties. These are the grandchildren BTW, not her children. The parents of these children have really flipped out over it.

Queen Margrethe is 82 years old and is now the longest-reigning monarch. I don't think she'll change her mind. I give her credit for having the balls to do that. Yes, I think the modeling (Nikolai) had something to do with it.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 1, 2022 5:52 PM |
Agree, R5. The more I see how the system works, the more I realize how fucked up it is. The kids of monarchs get titles, publicity, perks etc... but only one really matters. When that one comes to power, the cycle with the offspring repeats to only one mattering in adulthood. The others discarded are then regulated to mockery, back rows, forgotten about essentially. Also the heir gets to wield all this power and get$ everything all because they are first born!? It really sets these people up to what we’ve seen. As far as this story, the Queen is absolutely right, but I think she should’ve done it moving forward with the next generation.

The king of Sweden slimmed down the monarchy a few years back and removed the titles of his grandchildren though Princess Madeline and Prince Carl Philip and no one complained to the press. Which way did he do it that the Queen of Denmark did not do it? She seems to have messed up as to how she did it--she should have let them know and given them time to get used to it before she announced it to the press.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 1, 2022 7:16 PM |
My guess is that the grandchildren of the King of Sweden are much younger, so they wouldn’t know the difference. It’s strange the Prince in Denmark is complaining directly to the press about it.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 4, 2022 12:06 PM |
The thing is stripping titles is like a demotion. Or that the titles were given in mistake. She could have made the change about future generations receiving titles without causing all the hurt feelings. Of course, she might actually want to hurt their feelings.

You simply KNOW that Margarethe looked on in horror at the Sussex nightmare and the VERY minute she realised her grandchildren were famewhores looking to cash in on their titles while being raised outside of Denmark, said "Ingen Måde" to the whole thing.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 4, 2022 12:43 PM |
She's taking the titles away from the kids who have any chance of being king or queen. Look at Princess Anne's kids and how successful they have become without having a title.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 4, 2022 12:49 PM |
As I understand it, they do fuck all for the Royal Family, so why should they have titles?
Even the British RF seem to be doing away with titles for distant heirs - e.g. Princess Anne's children never had titles, nor have her grandchildren. There's no real need for titles unless you're a child of a direct descendant - ie I'd expect William's children to keep their titles, plus any grandchildren, etc. However, I don't see why the York girls need to be Princesses.
Removing the titles allows them to progress their lives as private citizens, free from the expectations associated with said titles.

[quote]I don't think that Prince Charlotte or Prince Louis should have been given those titles either. It just sets them up for a lifetime of disappointment.
There is a big difference between Nikolai and Charlotte and Louis. Nikolai is the son of the second son while Charlotte and Louis are children of the heir to the throne.
If, and that's a huge IF, you want to have working royals, giving HRH (or HH) and/or prince should be limited to the direct heirs. So, all of the children - for the British, Ann, Charles, Andrew, Edward - get the HRH title, but only Charles's children get the title after that. Nikolai (and Eugenie and Beatrice) shouldn't have gotten titles, but now that they have them, it seems silly to strip them of a title they've had for over 20 years.

The royal writer Hugo Vickers is promoting his new biography of the Duke of Kent (written with him) and raises the point the point the monarchy better not get too slim. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had 2,000 patronages between them. So that's 2,000 organizations now looking for a royal connection again.
One of the monarchy's strengths is the stuff you don't see... the smaller meetings and engagements as opposed to the big walk about occasions. That takes arms and legs. It seems to me pretty evident the core we now know now: King and Queen, Wales, Anne, Edward and Sophie are it. In future, William would need his three children working.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 4, 2022 2:08 PM |
The timing is interesting; it's like she came home from QEII's funeral & decided she'd better get her house in order and not expect the next generation to handle it. For everyone to have reacted they way they did, you get the sense she's been displeased with them for a while & she finally decided to cut them loose
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 4, 2022 2:21 PM |
Seems to me the best way to simplify a monarchy and titles is to let them expire with the death of the holder and retain them (if desired) for the principle heirs. And only direct heirs to the titles of Queen or king be created at birth.
That’s how I’d handle it in the UK. Am I hired?

I didn’t pick up on it initially, but this move is even nastier than I initially thought:
The 3 former princes will have to share a title with their father! Furthermore, the title has no historical significance in Denmark and it was only created in 2008.
It’s almost like, “Here, the 4 of you can share this meaningless title.”
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 4, 2022 2:59 PM |

They don’t perform any official royal duties on behalf of The Queen, and they don’t even live in Denmark. Why should the Danish government facilitate their ability to be work shy Eurotrash?

R51, the title was created for Frederick and Joachim's father, the late, lamented Henrik, and is based on his family name. Frederick and Joachim were already both Counts of Monpezat. So, it's directly relevant to Joachim and his sons.
[quote]On 30 April 2008, shortly before the wedding of his younger son, Prince Joachim, to Marie Cavallier, the Queen conferred the new Danish title "Count of Monpezat" (Danish: Greve af Monpezat) on both of her sons and made it hereditary for their male-line descendants, both male and female.[17] The Queen's private secretary Henning Fode commented, "The Queen and the Prince Consort have considered this for quite some time, and it has led to the belief that it was the right thing to do."[17] In fact, Henrik had mentioned this possibility as far back as 1996 in his published memoir: "During our generation, the future sovereign will perhaps receive approval to see 'Monpezat' added to the dynastic name of 'Oldenburg-Glücksburg'".[18] While being interviewed by the French weekly Point de Vue in October 2005, Henrik raised the issue shortly after the birth of Crown Prince Frederik's first son, Prince Christian, who is expected to inherit the Danish crown one day: "It also makes him very proud and happy that Monpezat will be added to this small grandson's future name as Prince of Denmark. 'It is a great joy for me that his French roots will also be remembered.'"[19]

R43 makes the most sense to me. I don't know how close she was to the British RF, but if she keeps her own counsel, she could have learned other things during her visit that made her think she shouldn't wait. I agree generally with those who thought the title should just not go to the next generation except the heir's children rather than be removed, but we don't know everything that she knew in making her decision.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 6, 2022 1:45 AM |
R32 did this Queen use her grandchildren to prop up her own image when they were young and cute like the BRF did with Harry? This is a form of "work" for the royal family that these kids do.
Royal families can't have it both ways. They can't plaster the images of these people as cute little kids all over the place but then cast them aside when they are older and no longer useful as props to bolster the family's image.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 6, 2022 1:50 AM |
Wrong, r30. OP's title is correct, as the change doesn't go into effect until next year.
"Nikolai, along with his brothers Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and younger sister Athena, 10 will be referred to as either “His Excellency Count of Monpezat” or “Her Excellency Countess of Monpezat” starting on January 1, 2023."

By the logic your using, why shouldn’t the Yorks have titles. They were grandchildren of the Queen, their father was 2nd in line for a time. If the don’t get titles, then neither should William’s grandchildren. If they were really streamlining, the only one of his kids who should have a title is George. Let the other ones grow up knowing that they will be required to have proper careers. The BRF seem to never learn from past history.
